Who is Charlie Green? Ch. 07

Springfield was hosting Friday night's regional playoff against Peoria, and the game was sold out! Even an hour before the start you could feel the electricity in the air! The visitors kicked off and Springfield's Tim Foley returned it fifty-two yards to Peoria's forty-one yard line; the home crowd went berserk! And THAT is where it all fell apart. Phil Mobley fumbled on the first play from scrimmage; Peoria's linebacker scooped it up and returned it sixty yards for a touchdown... and it was all downhill from there!

The visiting team scored two more times before Springfield got on the board with a field goal. At the half it was 21-3, and in the second half both teams scored two touchdowns to make the final score 35-17. In the locker room after the game, the dejection was so thick you could almost touch it! Charlie and his three manager partners stood in a corner without saying a word.

Finally Coach Ashby came in to console and inspire, but it didn't help much; it took a long time for the players to find the energy to shower, dress, and leave. As the four managers started to clean up, one of the assistant coaches said, "Hey you guys, here's an option, would you like to come in tomorrow and do that?" They took that option.

When Charlie emerged from the locker room, Mark and Julie were waiting. Mark said, "Hey man, that REALLY sucks!"

With a wry smile, Charlie replied, "Yeah, the painful part is for us seniors, there is no 'next year!' And I was actually starting to like football!"

His two friends smiled a sad looking smile. Julie said, "Do we want to get something to eat?"

Charlie was like, "Nah, I'm just gonna go home and regroup; we have a party to look forward to tomorrow."

As he pulled his car into the driveway, his phone pinged with a text message. Krista had written, "I'm sitting here with Donna right now; we're so sorry, Charlie!"

He replied, "Yeah, life certainly has its ups and downs, right?"

She returned a "winky" little emoticon; then a second later she added, "See you tomorrow night!"

The next morning there was a message from Carrie, "All the cheerleaders were assigned several team members to contact and maybe help console you guys; you were on my list, Charlie!"

"I'm good," he replied, "I can only imagine how the players feel. How is your cheer squad feeling?"

"Shitty. But Coach Lancaster took all the seniors aside and spoke to us. It was pretty emotional; she gave us all a big hug and told us how much she loved us. Very special!"

Charlie took a minute to consider his next reply; he simply said, "You girls ROCK!"

Carrie returned a collection of three red hearts!

At 9:00am the four managers met to put the facilities in order. They took their time and left it perfect! Coach Ashby had been in his office the whole time; and just before they left, he came out and saw the place. "Hey guys, great job! Come into my office for a minute." He praised them for their exceptional work that year! Charlie and Kenny were the only seniors, and Coach Ashby dismissed the other two managers and said to them, "I'll miss you two; no one could have done a better job!" He handed both of them a fifty dollar bill!"

"Coach! I..." Charlie teared up, but Coach Ashby waved them off!

"Go enjoy your day, you guys deserve it!"

By 5:30 that night Charlie was showered, shaved, and decked out in his "costume" for the party! White slacks and button-down shirt, blue captain's blazer with hat, and deck shoes.

His mother saw him and said, "Wow! You look a whole lot better than a zombie!"

Charlie chuckled, "Yeah, remember two years ago? It took three days to get all that make-up off!"

She smiled, "Do me a favor? I'd love to see a picture of everyone!"

"You got it!" and out the door he went.

When he got to Mark's house, Logan's brother Lawrence was already carrying his equipment downstairs, and as Charlie was saying hello, Julie came out of the kitchen. He took one look at her and whistled like, "Holy Shit!" She was dressed in a floor-length, black satin evening gown, the top of which was off-the-shoulder. The decolletage was somewhat modest; but her hair and make-up looked like she was about to sit for a glamour shoot at some fashion magazine; she was, in short, unbelievable!

Julie laughed at his reaction, "I clean up pretty well, right?"

"You are fucking gorgeous! Excuse my French!"

Then Mark came out; HE was in a black tuxedo as if he was standing up in a wedding! "Hey Charlie!"

"You guys! I am definitely under-dressed!"

"No you're not," said Julie, "this is a Halloween party, not a Cinderella ball. You look great! Come help us in the kitchen we have a few things to bring downstairs. All the food was set up on folding tables, and they spent the next ten minutes putting out the plates, utensils, and drinks to complete it all.

Three of their guy guests arrived next. Short and scrawny Peter was in a Springfield basketball uniform; which was perfect because no one would ever guess HE would play basketball! Logan was dressed like a cowboy complete with chaps and a hat! Darrell was also in a tuxedo; this one was royal blue with a white jacket. They were perfect!

Mark was standing by the door greeting everyone, collecting their $5.00, and pointing the way to the stairs. He also had a basket to collect everyone's cell phone or I-Pad. Downstairs Lawrence was busy cranking up some techno music thing and going around adjusting the lighting in the room. They were off to a good start!

Two more guys and girls came in and it was clear they hadn't spent as much time getting ready...

Then Krista and Donna came down the stairs! Keeping in mind that virtually no one in their group had ever seen these two girls wearing ANYTHING but jeans and a sweatshirt at school, this was beyond shocking! Their hair had been professionally done for this occasion; their make-up had glamour written all over their faces (just like Julie.) They looked so gorgeously different that if they'd been walking down the street, a lot of people would not have recognized them!

But their clothes! They were both wearing slinky-short-mini, cocktail dresses with spaghetti straps (that accentuated their cleavage and asses) and matching stiletto-heeled shoes! Krista's was red and Donna's was purple; everything and everyone in the room stopped to gawk at them. The music was still playing, but even Lawrence was staring! Charlie went over and kissed them both on the cheek, "Absolutely gorgeous, you two! I'm betting you locked up the $50.00 prize already! The other nerds in the room were so not used to this look that they hadn't the foggiest idea of what to do. Charlie deflected it all by saying, "Hey everyone, since we're all here now, let's take a group picture!" It was great; that picture eventually ended up in the school yearbook!

After that Lawrence got the party started by saying, "Okay People... I do have a song that never fails to wake a crowd up; let's see if it works tonight," and he started "Y. M. C. A." by The Village People. He was right, by the time the first verse was over, everyone was singing along and doing the shimmy-shake lettering thing! For Charlie, it was fascinating to watch Krista and Donna shaking their stuff along with the rest of them!

The next two and a half hours, were a blast; it was NOTHING AT ALL like their other parties. There was personal interaction, dancing, food, and laughter like they had never heard before! Mark had put the basket of cell phones on the fireplace mantle and NOBODY touched them! Very few of their clique were good dancers; Logan, Mark, Julie and Melanie were okay. Everyone else was trying hard! But the thing was, no one gave a shit; they were enjoying this "breaking out of their box" thing!

Along about 9:00pm everyone was sitting around sipping drinks and resting. Lawrence put on some slow stuff and went to get something else to eat. That was when Julie spoke up! "Okay, you people, I contacted all of you to bring twenty $1.00 bills. Did everyone do that?" There was a unanimous response so she continued, "Great! We're going to spend the rest of our time playing this little game we heard about called 'Never Have I Ever.' Someone is going to walk away with a nice stack of cash when it's over."

An interested buzz rolled through the room and Mark spoke up, "Okay then, everybody pull a chair into a tight circle here; let's get started." While they were doing that, he went over to the mantle and picked up a wicker basket that had been sitting on one end. He stepped into the circle and placed it on the floor in the center. "Now, here's how it goes; Julie is going to start by saying, 'Never-Have-I-Ever done X-Y-Z.' If you HAVE done that specific thing, you have to put a dollar in the basket. This game requires TOTAL HONESTY! No liars allowed. If you can't be honest playing this game, speak up now... or forever hold your peace!" When everyone snickered at him, he realized something, "Uh, what I meant was... if you can't be honest, pull your chair out, sit behind the circle, and just watch. But if you're gonna chicken-out like that, put ten dollars in the basket first."

Everyone looked around but no one opted out, so Julie said, "Okay then, let's play! I get to ask the first question, ready?" All the heads assented by nodding. "Here we go! 'Never have I ever been drunk!'" At first there was a startled look on some of the faces as if they didn't expect a question like that. But the surprise quickly faded and six people got up and put a dollar in the basket.

Charlie was semi-surprised that Krista and Donna were two of them, but he grinned and thought, "This game is gonna get good!"

Melanie Saperstein was on Julie's left and she was next. She thought for a second and said, "Never have I ever eaten calves liver!" The other kids burst out laughing and seven of them put in a dollar including Charlie!

Logan was next and he said, "Never have I ever jumped off the highest platform at the Springfield Municipal Pool!" Three people fed the basket.

The next four questions were about as innocuous as the last two. Like, one of them was "Never have I ever been in a car accident." But when it got to Charlie, Krista, and Donna, they had their questions ready. Charlie said, "Never have I ever mooned someone out the window of a car!" He cracked up a bit when all the heads in the room snapped around looking at each other. No one put in a dollar, but Charlie had made his point!

Krista was next. She touched Charlie's arm as if to say, "Watch this!" She smiled and said, "Following up Charlie's question, Never have I ever flashed anyone - anywhere!" Everyone was shocked when Melanie (blushing bright red) and Logan put a dollar in the basket!

Mark made everyone laugh when he said, "We're gonna get the backstory on that one later!"

Donna was next, and she was prepared, "Never have I ever done something a peeping tom would do!"

They heard three or four people in the room breath out an "Oh my God!" Five people (including Julie) put a dollar in the basket!

Logan said "We're gonna get the back story on THAT one too!" They all burst out laughing. Connor McMahon was supposed to be next, but he looked a bit flustered so they passed him.

Mark was next. "Never have I ever been caught ogling someone of the opposite sex!"

A few people in the room said, "What exactly does that mean?"

"It means, I have looked at girls' bodies... like stared at them, but they never caught me looking!" Four people had been caught looking!

So now they were back to Julie, and she followed up Mark's 'Never,' "Never have I ever caught someone ogling me!"

No one moved. They sat there for fifteen seconds, and finally, Charlie had the nerve to say, "We're the nerd clique, No one 'ogles' us!" They all burst out laughing!

But here it came; Melanie was catching on to the spirit of this thing! She was blushing, but she boldly said, "Never have I ever made out with someone in a car!"

The others were astonished; this was Melanie talking!

Only Charlie, Julie, and Mark paid up.

Tommie said, "Well for THAT matter, Never have I ever kissed someone romantically, meaning my mother and aunts don't count!" The laughter tittered around the room again and everyone stood and dropped a dollar... all except Tommie and Gretchen Williams.

Gretchen was a shy, quiet, unassuming girl. Charlie thought she was very nice, but the first time around, her question had been "Never have I ever driven a car!" Everyone else had put a dollar in!

She was smiling when Tommie asked the kissing question. It didn't seem to bother her that she'd never been kissed.

Because of that, Charlie was inspired... and he spoke up! He looked right at Gretchen, "Never been kissed Gretchen?"

She smiled bigger and shook her head, "No, never have!"

Charlie looked around the room. "Hold on a second you guys!" He leaned over to Krista and whispered in her ear. When she nodded, he said to the group, "You know what you guys? The last party we had, Krista and I were talking about this a little bit. And just for fun, I kissed her!" Every eyebrow in the room went up. "Gretchen, Tommie, there is absolutely no pressure here. But I'm just saying, if you've never been kissed, I'll put $5.00 in the basket right now if you kiss each other for five seconds!"

There were a few gasps in the room. Tommie said, "Right in front of everyone?"

Charlie grinned, "Yeah, five seconds... I'm not saying make out with her." He looked around, "Who else will put in five dollars?" Every hand went up! He looked at Gretchen, "Do you want to?"

She blushed profusely but said, "Sure, okay!"

"Tommie?"

He sat there. There was a slight smile on his face. Charlie said to the whole group, "You know, everyone else in the whole world has probably played 'Spin-the-Bottle' at least once in their life; but our group never has!" The buzz got louder. "What do you say, Tommie?"

He made everyone laugh again when he stood and said, "Far be it from me to be a party-pooper!" He stepped over to Gretchen and leaned in; it was only a little awkward, but they kissed and it looked very nice! Everyone gave them a standing ovation... and then they roared with laughter!

Logan was really getting into it! He ramped it up a whole level higher by asking, "Never have I ever watched porn with another person!"

Charlie looked at Krista and Donna; he mouthed the words, "Oh my God!" It took a few extra seconds for each person to find some resolve, but finally Connor and Darrell threw in a dollar.

Gretchen sat there like frozen. "Do you have one, Gretchen?" asked Jules.

"I do, but I'm trying to think of a different one."

Four or five voices rang out, "Why?"

"Because the one I'm thinking of is too embarrassing." Indeed, she was blushing redder than before!

Krista said, "Aw, don't be embarrassed Gretch, we're all on a roll now; go ahead!"

They counted out the money and there was $168 in the basket. Julie passed out eleven two inch square cards with these instructions, "Write down your name, and underneath that write down the name of the person you think is wearing the best costume!" Everyone filled out the cards and put them back in the basket. Mark mixed them up, held the basket high in the air, and Julie picked out two. "Okay kids, these two people get $84 apiece! Congrats to.... Donald and Krista!" Then she and Mark counted the votes for 'Best Costume.' She held up her hand, "We have a winner for best costume; Congrats to Donna Bridges who beat out Krista by one vote!"

The room was mixed with high fives and disappointed groans, but generally speaking there was still a good vibe all around! It was 12:30 am and nobody really wanted to leave. Mark kicked them out because his parents texted that they were on their way home!

Before he left, Charlie took Krista and Donna by the hand and led them away from the group for a moment. "I just want to thank you girls!"

If you don't want to stay, we'll drive you home. There's absolutely no pressure here!" Again, Lena didn't reply. "Are you there?"

"Yes, I'm thinking."

"Great, I'll pick you up at 9:45 then!"

Lena quickly replied, "Wait, I didn't agree to this!"

Charlie laughed again, "You might as well have. You said you were thinking; that means you're curious. In the back of your mind you know that everything I've said to you in all our conversations has proven true, and you are REALLY curious to find out if this is true too!"

"Are you being smug?"

"Am I wrong?"
