There's some severe discipline and bodily functions so if you find those to be problems, read no further. All characters are 18 or over.]

Laura Harding and Barbara Boyd, the two 18-year-old sophomores assigned to be class monitors for Anne Smithers's senior English class, had won the confidence and respect of both Anne and their sophomore class teacher, Judy Keane. This had been an experiment at St Kendra's Finishing School to improve overall behavior among the seniors, who acted entitled only because they were the oldest students in the school. To be admitted to the school, students, who were either pre-college or there instead of going to college, had to be at least 18.

Laura and Barbara had been stationed at desks in the rear corners of Anne's classroom so they could keep their eyes on the seniors. They were recording any observed misbehavior and sometimes Anne put them in charge when she had to leave the classroom. If a senior were ill-advised enough to misbehave then, the two monitors could record failing behavior grades in Anne's gradebook, and in serious cases, were empowered to discipline the offenders, even using the cane.

This had occurred when Nancy Hartley, a senior, had defied Laura. "Laura, the seniors know that you are a mature person and not to be trifled with by them," Anne continued, "and Barbara, you have won my confidence by coming up with imaginative disciplinary methods such as the trip to Miss Keane's class today. While I'm away, you are being designated by Miss Crawford as the substitute teacher for this English class, and my other classes if that proves feasible, but this will be your primary responsibility. Barbara will serve as your assistant; you will not require any sophomore monitors but can assign girls in the senior class."

Laura and Barbara were wildly surprised by this announcement. Laura managed to respond, "Thank you, Miss Smithers, for the confidence you are showing in us. I believe we can justify your confidence by our capable serving in your place to complete the term."

Anne smiled and thanked her. "As befits someone who is being given all the authority and prerogatives of a full-time teacher here, Laura, you will receive your own gradebook--the one provided to all the teachers--and your own cane for disciplinary use. I was unable to secure those tools for you, Barbara, but I was able to get a small, soft whip like the one Miss Keane uses, for you to employ at Laura's discretion and direction. "I hope we can prove worthy of your trust, Miss," Laura managed to say as Anne had outlined the authority Laura especially would be given, and that Barbara would also have as needed.

"I will spend some time with you both after school today going over the material to be covered in class, some of which will be new to you, so you will have to invest time in mastering it so you can teach it to the senior girls," Miss Smithers went on. "This will include my summaries of the readings that you will assign, and the plan I have completed for scheduling and preparing quizzes and examinations. I also will advise you on calling on girls to recite in class. I will include Barbara in all of this instruction since she may be stepping in for you at times."

Miss Smithers then said that she needed to go see Miss Crawford, and that Laura should accompany her. "Don't get scared, please," Anne chuckled, as she noted Laura's bewildered look. "She's just going to formalize what I just told you. It's good for you to get used to seeing her in person. She's not as fearsome as many students would have you believe."

Laura stood and walked out of the classroom with Miss Smithers. When they reached the office of the Head of School, the secretary, Amy Henderson, welcomed Anne and said she was pleased to see Laura, whom she hadn't seen for a while. Soon, Miss Crawford emerged from her office and invited Anne and Laura to come in.

"Well, Laura," she began, "I'm assuming Miss Smithers has informed you of what we have in mind. She's given you a strong vote of confidence; I know you have a good record here. I hope this works out well and even now, I'm prepared to keep you on as a teacher when Miss Smithers returns, if that's what you want. Some of the teachers here are only a very few years older than you are, so I feel you are mature enough to move smoothly into this role. Miss Smithers told me, for example, that you handled a behavior problem well when she had to leave the classroom, including your administering a caning, which many teachers are a bit reluctant to carry out. I've approved your appointment so please ask me any questions you might have. You should be aware that you are welcome to use the teachers' lounge and also the women teachers' room."

Miss Crawford then told Laura she would be paid at the standard rate for a new teacher without teaching experience. "Thank you so much, Evelyn," Laura smiled. "I was wondering about how my own academic situation can be handled since now I'll be teaching instead of studying."

"A good question," Miss Crawford replied. "Since you will be absorbing a large amount of material in preparing lessons now, I see no difficulty in awarding you full credit for the courses in which you have been enrolled. I shall advise your teachers, asking them for a report on your work this term, and then enter credit and an appropriate grade depending on the reports I receive. I'm sure they will be good ones or I would know about it."

"You may inform Miss Boyd about these matters," Miss Crawford continued. "I've approved her as your assistant and at some point, you may decide you don't need any monitors so long as she is there to held you keep control of things. I think she has good potential to teach as well, but we shall see how things go and what our needs are for next year, or sooner if openings occur."

With that, Evelyn Crawford stood up and smiled at both Laura and Anne. "You're filling in for one of my best teachers, Laura, and I hope you not only succeed but that you enjoy yourself. I won't tell you not to work too hard, because you will see that even experienced instructors need to put in a lot of preparation. Good luck and please come and see me if there ever is anything you need or that I can help with."

Anne thanked her, as did Laura, and they left her office and said thanks to Amy on their way out.

When they returned to Anne's study, she resumed her orientation. "You also were learning from me all the procedures for discipline," Anne said. "This includes what punishments you may award and also the processes of grading and making entries in the gradebook and on the computer system, including those for instances of bad behavior. For example, you will need to complete a report form--you can do this online--to Miss Crawford every time you administer a significant punishment, such as caning or whipping. You can also restrict toilet use and require anyone being so punished to be accompanied to the girls' room by Barbara, who will inspect their panties before and after their toilet use. Laura and Barbara returned to their monitor's desks and Miss Smithers explained to the surprised class who would be filling in for her.

"You will now refer to Laura as Miss Harding," Anne began, "as she will be my replacement or substitute for the rest of this term. You will give her the respect that you owe me and also give Barbara, Miss Boyd to you, who will be her assistant."

There was some murmuring as the absence of Miss Smithers, but even more that designation of Laura and Barbara as her substitutes, came as a nasty surprise to some of the girls in the class, who were two years older than Laura and Barbara, even though both had been promoted to be were seniors, Miss Smithers and Miss Keane having convinced Miss Crawford earlier to accord them that status.

"To make myself clear," Miss Smithers now told them, "Miss Harding, and under her direction, Miss Boyd, will have full authority to discipline class members, which includes all punishments, including caning and whipping, as well as awarding grades for your academic performance; basically, she will be able to do everything I now am responsible for. The girls who had been disciplined by Laura or Barbara were mute with surprise and fear. They already regarded Laura as cruel; now she had power to grade them as well as punish them in her untrammeled discretion. They were not as afraid of Barbara but knew she had been responsible for the humiliation of Carol and Jenny by Miss Keane.

Nancy Hartley decided to try to start things off positively. She raised her hand and when called on by Miss Smithers, said, "Miss, for our part, and I think I can speak for all of us, we in this class will cooperate with Miss Harding and Miss Boyd just as we do for you. We expect them to maintain your standards, and know that while it may prove embarrassing, we will benefit from their correcting us if we are naughty."

Anne, as well as Laura and Barbara, was delighted with Nancy's broad acceptance of the transfer of authority over the class. Miss Smithers asked Laura to respond for her.

"Thank you, Nancy," Laura said clearly, "I appreciate, as does Miss Boyd, the confidence you are showing us. I know we have had some unpleasant encounters in the past when I needed to discipline you here, but it's a clean slate as far as I'm concerned. I know you are going to do your best to avoid any kind of naughtiness."

Laura and Barbara carefully observed Miss Smithers's conduct of the class and overall behavior as an experienced teacher for the remainder of the day. Then they joined her in her study where she discussed all of the aspects of her role as English teacher: readings, grammatical instruction, how she graded--since she was giving English classes, she deducted points for misspelling and poor grammar, and her general views on how to teach effectively. She then spoke briefly with Laura alone, after Barbara left the room for this.

"Laura, I hope you will make the most of this opportunity," Anne told her. "You are being given an unusual chance that could result in your appointment as a full-time teacher here beyond this term. I for one would like to see that happen. Even though you are younger than many of the students, you appear to have a natural air of command that bodes well for your ability to control a class."

Laura smiled and thanked her again. "Now, I'm going to do something that may bother you but which I feel necessary," Anne added. "I'm going to demonstrate to you how I use both the cane and the small whip. This will hurt but I feel you do need to experience these punishments, so you will know how the students to whom you award them will respond. Laura and Barbara thanked Miss Smithers for taking the time to orient them to serve as teachers. They walked out of school together, with no one else around as it was well past dismissal time. They held hands for a time as they enjoyed the prospect of now being truly in charge of the classroom, although they understood the prep they would need to do so that they would be fully ready to teach as well as discipline.

"It's going to be different from when we were monitors," Laura remarked. "Now, we're responsible for teaching lessons as well as setting quizzes and exams. But I'm also thinking of how it will be pleasant to be able to call on girls, including this class, who are all seniors, which we were in name only since Miss Smithers had arranged for our transfer from being sophomores."

"The first time you call on one of them to recite will be more exciting, at least for me, than when either of us gets to cane someone," Barbara responded.

"Yes, and that's good," Laura said. "We do want to focus on teaching--remember how Miss Keane always urged us to watch how our teachers conducted their classes so we might be well prepared to fill that role when needed. "That will be a little wild," Barbara agreed. "I think it might even be wise for us to aske Miss Keane if it would be ok for us to call her by her first name."

"Yes," Laura replied, "we are definitely teachers, but we're only put there in that role for as long as Miss Smithers is away, and she might well be back next term if her medical procedure goes well. She didn't tell us what it would be, and I definitely wasn't going to pry."

"I'm assuming she's not pregnant," Barbara suggested, "but I do figure it's some kind of woman's thing, which might be serious. I remember when my mom had something and seemed to be going to the bathroom to pee constantly. I haven't seen Miss Smithers doing that, you know, running out of the classroom. Although... she has gone out now and then and left us in charge. Oh, it's silly to speculate but I do hope she's all right."

Laura and Barbara then left for the day and again found the school empty by the time they walked out into the open air. They agreed to get together over the weekend and review some of the materials Miss Smithers had given them that went into much detail about teaching English classes at the high school-college level.

By Monday, the two were well-versed in quite a bit of the senior-year English curriculum and had review Miss Smithers's lesson plans, notes, and texts.

When they arrived at school, both were dressed stylishly but conservatively in nice separates, pantyhose, and smart pumps. Laura had donned a gold stickpin she wore in an ascot. Barbara thought it best to sit in the back, not at a desk but in a chair apart from the class. The monitors' desks they had occupied were empty.

Laura had cleared another idea with Miss Smithers that the new teacher now put into effect. Then she announced that the two girls who had been disciplined recently by Miss Keane--Jenny Clayton and Carol Strickland--would be the first ones to serve as monitors.

"I'd like to think that your behavior as a class doesn't need to be supervised by sophomores at this stage," Laura said definitively. "So, I'm naming Jenny and Carol to be my monitors, and we may have some of the rest of you serve in that role as we proceed through the rest of the term, and I'm not suggesting that Jenny or Carol will not do a fine job at their positions. In fact, I hope that Miss Boyd and I can handle any problems that arise, so that we may not need monitors any more at all."

There was a bit of a stir and undercurrent of surprise among the seniors, and Laura called the class to order.

"I didn't intend for my announcement to initiate discussion among you about it," Laura declared. "So, let's get down to today's assignments. You were given some readings from Edith Wharton's novel, "The Age of Innocence," to read and be prepared to discuss in class today."

She looked around the room. "So, let's hear your response to being asked whether you found what you read from the novel to be relevant to our life today... Marjorie Benning?"

Marjorie was a bright girl of medium height and frame, who wore stylish glasses and filled out her school uniform nicely. As was the rule in classes at the school, she rose to respond to Laura's question.

"Miss Harding," she began, and Laura smiled at being so addressed as a teacher, "I think the author wanted to emphasize that the women in this story were several steps ahead of the men in terms of perceiving how things were going and how they might shape them. This applies especially to May, who quietly took what steps she needed to take to come out on top in contrast to Newland, who was quite clueless much of the time."

"Very good, Marjorie," Laura responded. "Now, what about Countess Olenska... Jamie Kenton?"

Jamie was a statuesque blonde who thought well of herself. She stood and was clearly uncomfortable being called on by Laura, but in truth, she would have resented being called on by any teacher, including Miss Smithers.

"Well, Miss," Jamie began, "she really was a slut in the eyes of all of the society people. She had married a titled foreigner but now was back home and regarded as being in disgrace by many of them because she had clearly abandoned her marriage."

"My question was intended to discover what you thought of her ability to deal with being entranced with Newland but having to outflank May," Laura continued.

"I think she was not too bright, Miss," Jamie replied, "and the way she manipulated the men, Newland especially, but also Beaufort, you might say that she was lowering her status in the eyes of the women in the society especially, who regarded her as a common whore, who might as well have been having it off in the middle of the street."

"Do you think Edith Wharton intended to present her like that?" Laura followed up.

"I can't tell if she did," Jamie shot back, "but I fully expected her to be fucking someone in one of those carriages they all rode in."

"It would be better if you watched your own language, Jamie," Laura said curtly.

"Sorry, Miss," Jamie chuckled, "but I figured we're all grown-ups here, at least we seniors, anyway."

"That's totally out of line--this is school, Jamie," Laura snapped. "Come up to the front here now."

Jamie was only slightly surprised at Laura's reaction. In a sense she was testing the new teacher, knowing that she might be insecure being two years younger than the girls in the class. She stood and walked confidently to the front where Laura awaited her. Laura was actually an inch or so taller than Jamie.

"Lift your skirt and tuck it in your belt so it stays up," Laura now ordered.

"You're really going to spank me?" Jamie asked incredulously.

"I don't need to inform you of what is going to happen," Laura crisply replied. "Now pull your panties down to your knees."

Jamie quickly realized that Laura would be just as firm a disciplinarian as she was as a monitor, only now she had the authority of being a teacher. She decided she'd better try to get her to backtrack by cooperating with her.

Barbara walked up to the front after the seniors had left the classroom.

"Thanks, Babs," Laura replied, showing with her grin how pleased she was. "Let's go get some lunch in the teachers' dining room since we have some more of Miss Smithers's classes this afternoon."

When they reached the teachers' dining room, Judy Keane saw them come in and invited them to sit at a table with her. She introduced them to teachers they knew from being in their classes as students. One was Muriel Blass, a middle-aged math teacher, and the other was Kate Hanson, a twentyish history teacher. Both greeted Laura and Barbara heartily with welcomes to the faculty.

They did ask them about their classes so far, and Barbara responded by saying how well she felt Laura had done in her first class that morning with the seniors. "She also had to deal with a disciplinary situation," Barbara added.

"Oh," said Judy Keane, who hearing what Barbara had reported, was now interested in the conversation. "And how did that proceed?"

"I had to deal with a girl who used bad language," Laura now stated. "She seemed to be testing me, I think, so I called her to the front--she had been reciting--and had her lift her skirt and lower her panties. She failed the inspection--in the rear, I might note--and I think I surprised her by not awarding physical discipline. Instead, I gave her a zero in Conduct for today. Second, make sure you send in a report to Miss Crawford today; she gets that for any classroom discipline. And last but not least, please call me Judy," she grinned. "You're one of us now."

Laura beamed at Judy Keane's generous welcome. "Thanks, Judy, that means a lot," she smiled.
