Zara was surprised to see a boy with an augmentation, she could count on one hand how many boys she knew with functioning ones. But it must be an augmentation.

She saw a boy near the fountain. He had a bunch of purple-colored paper planes flying around his head, and it looked like he controlled them because they followed the movement of his finger.

"Thanks," he chuckled, "That's indeed an augmentation, but it's not telekinesis," He rolled up the sleeve of his bomber jacket. Slowly, a thin sheet of paper was ejected from his skin like he was a living printer. The sheet then began to fold itself as if it was grabbed by an invisible origami master and turned into a plane. Without any help, it jumped into the air and joined the other planes above.

"That's my Paper Pixie power," he revealed.

"Cool!" Zara glanced at the planes. She then introduced herself.

"Niko Aganin," he shook Zara's hand with a firm grip, "Nice to finally meet you, Zara. I heard stories from the other girls about you."

"Good morning, pupils," they heard Aritimi appear near. Except, this time she didn't come alone.

Koshka, the Bug Queen was on her side, wearing one of those metal collars.

"We will use her help for today. The collar will prevent her from doing anything bad, so don't worry about it," Aritimi replied.

Today's location was a beautiful grassy field. Zara thought they were in the wrong place until she noticed the building behind them.

"Yes!" Niko exclaimed with joy, "That's the place of the Aerial Combat Unit."

"I knew you would like this," Aritimi said. Indeed, judging by Niko's bomber jacket and paper plane fleet, that even followed him through the portal, it was easy to guess that he was into flying.

"Oh, I remember once seeing this unit destroying a flock of Wereravens in the news," Zara said, "I rarely hear about them though."

"Yes, they usually stop their targets before they could get closer to the city so it's hard to see them in action," Aritimi nodded as they approached the place that looked like a private airport.

"Oh, I got it. We're going to simulate a fight and Koshka will be the flying monster we have to beat," Zara speculated.

"In your dreams," Koshka gruffed.

"You almost got it right, though," Aritimi nodded.

They got closer and noticed someone leaning against the wall of a hangar, sipping on a cup of coffee.

"I'm surprised you can drink that every morning," Aritimi greeted the woman.

"Everybody got their own poison, Timi," she chuckled, drinking the rest with a big gulp, while Aritimi rolled her eyes.

"Pupils, and Koshka, she is Piper Aldridge, the commander of the Aerial Combat Unit," Aritimi introduced her friend to them.

Piper was a lean, wiry, yet visibly strong woman. Her skin was lightly weathered, likely from exposure to the elements. She had short, wavy auburn hair with a few grey strands in the front, slicked back but slightly tousled because of her cap.

It was like someone from the wrong era of time because Piper looked like a classic pilot: brown leather bomber jacket, beige jodhpurs tucked into knee-high pilot boots, leather flight cap with built-in comms, and of course the goggles on her forehead.

"Everything's ready?" Aritimi asked.

"Yes. Isela arrived soon with the targets. I'll call for her, just a minute," Piper replied and disappeared behind an old metal door, but a few minutes later came back with a young black woman on her side.

"Pupils, she is Isela Carmichael, Inez's daughter," Aritimi introduced her, although there was no need for introduction. Zara only had to look at her face to recognize Inez's features in her. She was somewhere in her early 30s, and her hair was separated into two afro buns.

Koshka shot her a quick glare and Isela smirked.

"It's an honor to finally meet the girl who saved my mother," Isela shook Zara's hand. She was wearing the same uniform as her mother, so she was also in the Pest Control Unit, Zara thought.

Zara's heart began beating faster as she heard this. Her reason to join the HSA years ago was to prevent others from losing their mother. She felt a sudden kinship with Isela and her eyes sparkled with joy.

"Don't forget about the monster who almost killed her," Aritimi pointed at Koshka.

"Hey, being the victim of someone like me is a badge of honor to any hunter," Koshka said proudly.

"Let's move on to today's task. Shall we?" Piper stepped in.

"I'm so excited," Niko could barely handle his happiness, "I hope we can fly."

"Yes we will, but let me explain first what we will do," Piper chuckled, "Since a real fight with a hostile monster would be problematic, especially in the sky, we have to rely on the help of Isela and Koshka."

"Me and my mum gathered some bug monsters during the years. We mostly use them as pets and to keep other bugs away from our home," Isela continued, "I brought some bugs and this albino abomination will control them for safety reasons. We can control her through the collar so you will be safe up there," she glared at Koshka.

"Just to be clear, my fellow bugs won't be killed, just defeated. Right?" Koshka glared back.

"Of course," Isela nodded, "I don't want my pets to die. Because that's what you and your kinfolk are to me, pets," she leaned closer to the bug girl.

"Damn, just kiss already," Niko teased.

"Khm... so here's the plan. Isela will choose some monsters for you to fight and then unleash them. Koshka will take control over them with her power and sends them against you two. Your job is going to be defeating them in the sky," Piper continued.

"That sounds better than what I expected. What plane will we use?" Zara asked.

"I got a special type of "homemade" plane," Piper chuckled as she opened the door of the hangar.

The plane, that rolled out by itself, looked like a pink vintage airplane. It didn't take long for Zara to notice that it was pulsing and twitching like a living being.

"This is the power of my Flyer Fleshling augmentation," Piper revealed and a small piece of flesh detached itself from her face. It took the shape of a ball with wings and began circling around the plane.

"Ew! So this whole plane is made of your excess flesh?" Zara cringed.

"Yes. In the beginning, I could only create small drones like this one, but later I learned how to unite them into one body that I can reshape. Now I have my own plane," Piper patted her flesh plane proudly, "Although, I need to connect it to my body on a daily level by sitting inside the cockpit otherwise it would start to decompose, but sience I'm flying every single day, it's not an issue."

"Gross, but cool at the same time," Zara wondered if she would have such ability with her flesh in the future.

"Let's get on board," Niko stepped forward to the flesh plane, but Piper stopped him.

"Sorry, but only me and Timi will fly with this," she shook her head.

"What? Then how will we fight the bugs in the sky with Zara?"

"Zara got the power of flying. She will help with that," Aritimi answered.

"Oh, it would have been cooler to use that plane, but it's fine. At least I can fly," Niko sighed.

"We can start soon, but first, get ready for the fight and take off your clothes. Go into the fight like the ancient warriors, naked," Aritimi said. In the next moment, her jumpsuit was on the ground, revealing her nude form to everyone.

"And? What happens if we fail? That's not the exam," Zara said.

"If you will fail, I will allow Koshka to "punish" both of you with her stinger."

"It's just for motivation. In a real situation, the stakes are even higher," Aritimi replied.

Koshka just giggled.

"And before I forget. You can punish the loser team with your stinger, Zara," Aritimi shot a smug grin at Koshka.

"What?" Koshka glared back angrily, "You never mentioned this!"

"It's just to motivate you as well," Aritimi giggled this time.

"Okay, I'm definitely motivated now," Zara grinned.

"Um... you said loser team. But there's nobody else beside Koshka, only me," Isela raised an eyebrow.

"Exactly," Aritimi nodded, "To motivate you as well to choose the best monsters for the job."

Isela and Koshka took their positions on the hill on the furthest side of the field. Zara had no idea what kind of or how many bugs Isela brought with herself, but she went there with a big van.

Piper just took off with her flesh plane with Aritimi on board, so they can view the fight better.

Zara and Niko were still on the ground, readying themselves.

"By the way. The punishment Aritimi was talking about. What kind of stinger does Koshka have? Just want to know what we're risking," Niko stammered.

"A Dire Ladybug? Seriously?" Koshka rolled her eyes.

"I don't want to send out the big gun early. I want to test what they can do first," Isela hushed her.

"What should we do?" Niko asked, "That bug girl looked super furious about bugs, so we better don't kill any of them."

"Fine," Zara sighed, "How much control do you have over your paper planes?"

"I can change their shapes if needed," she replied.

"Okay, I got an idea," Zara said.

"What's happening?" Isela tried to look but the events were too far for her eyes.

"Oh, shit!" Koshka gasped, "They sent a bunch of paper planes into my face," she said as she was still connected to the bug monster's senses.

"Just shake them off, stupid bug," Isela gruffed.

"Shut up! Yes, I got rid of them. Wait. Why did I begin to fall?" Koshka gasped again.

"It worked!" Niko exclaimed as her paper planes conjoined into a paper chain, binding the bug's wings to its back. The oversized bug fell to the ground, but survived without issues.

"The flying monster is on the ground! It means it counted as dead so you can't use it now!" Aritimi yelled from the plane. Her long braids flapping in the air like a flag.

"I hope your next one is better," Koshka hissed, her antenna's quivering.

The next monster had been sent out. It appeared to be a normal wasp.

"Is that really just a wasp?" Zara glanced at the creature. She could sense it thanks to her Bug Queen powers, but she also felt something monstrous about it, clearly not a normal bug.

"Cover that wasp with your planes. Envelope it completely until it's surrounded by your paper from every direction," Zara ordered.

Niko sent out five planes in a straight line against the bug.

Suddenly, a loud gunshot was heard and all five of the planes were cut in half.

"What? The wasp did this?" they looked at the falling remains of the five planes.

"That's what a Whiplash Wasp can do," Isela snickered.

"That was my doing," Koshka added.

"Where is it?" Zara looked around.

"I can't see it either," Niko said.

"Failure!" Aritimi shouted, "The bug just entered the building, according to the sensors. One point to the bug team."

"Shit!" Zara shouted, "We can only miss one more before losing."

The next one was a huge praying mantis, the size of a human. It flew toward the duo at high speed.

Fortunately, Zara managed to defeat the attacker with a well-aimed kick.

"Damn it!" Koshka hissed, "The Dire Mantis was too slow."

"I know, but it was good at tiring her," Isela said. Indeed, Zara got tired. Carrying Niko while flying at the same time was wearisome.

The next bug was a big blue mosquito.

"Za za za! A Sleepsquito! I'll aim this one at Zara's eye where the chitin is the thinnest. Even if I can only scratch her, the sleep-inducing chemical inside the bug will work," Koshka laughed.

The Sleepsquito soared through the air, aimed at Zara's right eye.

Zara of course tried to "cheat" a little bit by trying to control the bug monsters with her own Bug Queen powers. The problem is that Koshka's control over them was too strong each time. After all, she is the one who has experience with this power, Zara thought.

Niko's planes tried to catch the bug but it evaded them too quickly each time they got close enough.

"Oh fuck!" Zara shouted angrily as the Sleepsquito was barely an inch away from her eye.

Suddenly, it stopped. One of its wings got sliced off by something and it started to fall.

"What was that?" Zara wondered.

"My plane," Niko said proudly, "Look," she pointed at a paper plane. The plane began to riple and with a quick move, it ejected its front half, like shooting a projectile.

"Nice!"

"I tried to copy what the Whiplash Wasp did, but I couldn't make my planes this fast, so I chose to reduce their size then," Niko explained.

The next monsters were a giant bee, a fire-breathing butterfly, and a very shiny firefly that almost blinded the duo, but they kept winning against the monsters.

"Can we take a break?" Zara asked as Aritimi and Piper flew around them.

"The monsters don't take breaks during an attack," Aritimi shook her head.

"At least can I put Niko on the ground or the roof or something? It's hard to fly with others in my arms."

"This is a test for your power. You will have to get used to breaching your limits if needed," Aritimi shouted back. Zara was angry but she had to admit that Aritimi was right about that.

"Okay, I'll send out one that will go past them," Isela unleashed the next monster from a small container.

The next was a cat-sized cockroach that could teleport in short range. Just in time, but managed to dogde Niko's planes. Only a few managed to hit it but still reached to target.

"And we got a second point!" Isela exclaimed.

The next was a tarantula with bat wings that was easy to beat.

They continued the challenge for long minutes until Aritimi shouted to both teams.

"Sudden turn of events! The mission changed for both teams. Since all the minions had been defeated, at least one of you has to reach the target," she spoke to the bug team, "Zara, Niko, you will have to defeat both of them. Just to be clear, if an opponent gives up, it's also counted as a defeat! Let's start the final fight!" Aritimi's voice echoed across the field.

"Yes! We got this win in the bag," Isela exclaimed.

"Yeah!" Koshka raised her hand for a high five but Isela refused to touch her.

"Now go win this for us. There's no way Zara could fight somebody like you while still holding Niko, and you are too big for her paper planes. Just reach that building as fast as you can," Isela ordered.

Koshka took off and was on her way to the target. At the same time, Isela noticed something high above.

No, it wasn't Zara and Niko. They were still close to the building, surrounded by Niko's planes like an origami halo.

Then she could see it. It was a much bigger version of Niko's planes, and she was there too. She was speeding toward Isela, holding on to the giant paper plane as a makeshift hang glider.

"Oh shit!" Isela gasped. Koshka was too far to call back in time.

Koshka didn't pay attention to her partner's defeat or the simulated mission, she only cared about Zara.

Quickly, Koshka tried to punch Zara into the face but thanks to her swift reflexes and strength, she managed to stop the strike with her arm. The wind of their clash pushed some of the paper planes away.

"Not bad, but you are still an amateur. You will need more strength to beat me," Koshka hissed, "The last time you had a freshly awakened power, fueled by pure hysterical strength."

"Oh, I know how to deal with you, stupid bug," Zara grinned, "Niko! Now!"

The planes gathered below Zara and formed a thick platform. She then switched from her Bug Queen form to her Merewolf form and kicked herself away from the platform. Her furry fist landed in Koshka's stomach, sending her flying towards the sky.

The makeshift platform followed Zara to save her from falling.

A few seconds later, Koshka came back, descending at high speed, like a living asteroid, her fist ready for a punch. There were a few cracks on the chitin of her stomach, but otherwise she was fine.

Zara dodged the punch by switching back to her bug form and flew away from the spot. Koshka went through the paper platform, reducing it to shreds during the process. She barely managed to stop before reaching the ground. Not even a whole inch was between her feet and the ground.
