I got in my car and drove past them, I pulled in front of them and got out of my car, I flagged them down and I had to talk to them both. She had to know how I felt for her Son, this was no passing thing, I was truly in love with him. Theo got out and we stood close to his Mother, I told her I had to talk to them both, she had to know how I felt for her Son.
I told her I wished I could join them and be a part of their world, be a part of their family, love them and love their Son. He and I live out our lives together, be a part of their community. She told her Son if he decided to leave them for me, then he would be shunned from them and would never see his family ever again.
"Mom I need to ask you if you were in my shoes and you were in love with another woman, told you would be kicked out, tossed out to fend for yourself just to be with the one that you love what would you do?"
"Theo I cannot answer this, your father and I have been together for many years, did I meet a person before him? Yes I did, but I made my choice to be with him and we are for the most part happy together."
"Mom do you ever wonder what would have happened had you made the other choice?"
"Yes I have Son each and every day of my life, but I made the decision I made and I will live with it."
Theo's hand on my lower back, pulling me in closer to him.
"Mom you have to understand, holding Billy like this feels right, being with Mary does not feel like this, it feels like I am with the wrong person."
"Son I cannot make this decision for you, you need to decide what matters more to you, your family or Billy, you can't have both."
"Why can't he have both, why can't we live with all of you, as a couple in love?"
"Billy it's not allowed, it's against all of the teachings, it's against everything in the Bible."
"Theo I love you, if you choose your family I understand completely, I am not trying to pressure you into a decision, make your mind up and I will stay away from you."
"Billy I have to choose my family."
"I understand Theo, thank you both for listening to me, Theo have a very happy life, all the best to you and your family."
I walked to my car in tears, I got in and sat there, Theo rode past me his eyes looking into my car, I stayed there for half an hour. I could not stop crying, I really did love this man, but his decision had been made. I knew at this point I had to leave this town and all the memories attached to it, I asked for a transfer and got it immediately. I packed up and was gone, I was only about a hundred miles away, but at least I did not have to see Theo each and every day.
Theo married and settled in with his new wife, they tried to have children but she could not concieve, she wanted him to find a better wife one who could have his children. He would stay with her, but the sex was non existant, I have to say I thought about him each and every day. I met a man but he and I had nothing in common, he was completely opposite to Theo, and I would judge each and every one of them to him from now on.
Life went on for both of us, I never met anyone, he and his wife went about each day like robots, in autopilot. I went to visit my parents my Dad in the hospital not serious but he had to be hospitalized, I went to the store to grab him a card and some candy that he liked. I was reading cards when he came up behind me and his hand on my lower back.
I did not have to turn around I knew who it was, I turned and started to cry, I was sure after a year of not seeing him I might be the least bit over him, but he was the man I wanted to marry, to live my life out with.
"How are you Billy?"
I wiped the tears away and said I was okay.
"How are you Theo?"
"Happy to see you Billy, how come I have not seen you?"
"I moved away, I could not run into you each and every day, it hurts to much. I still love you Theo."
"Still love you too Billy."
"I heard you got married Theo?"
"Yes but it is not working out, we tried to have kids but we can't, and besides I am in love with another."
Right in the middle of the store he pulls me in and kisses me, his arms around my torso his lips pressed to mine. I can tell you we got some deep gasps from the other shoppers in the store.
He held me close and looked me in the eyes.
"Billy I cannot deny my feelings anymore, I am in love with you, not my wife, I have to be in your life Billy no matter what the outcome."
"Theo you know I love you very much, and I want you at my side for the rest of my life."
You have to realize this is a small town, a small backwater town, no one in this town is open to gays, and for an Amish man and an English to declare their love in the middle of a store is unheard of. We stood there for quite some time before we realized we had gathered a small group of towns people whispering to each other, I was surprised at how understanding some of them actually were. I guess I expected torches and garden tools as weapons.
We walked out of the store and he asked if he could move in with me, I said he could and I wanted him right now. He told me he would have to go back home and tell his wife, his parents, and the church that he had to leave to be with the man he loves. He told me where he lived and asked if I would pick him up in an hour or so?
I told him I had to go visit my parents and then I would come by to get him, I went back in the store and got some looks let me tell you, some more whispering was also done. I got the card and candy and went to see my Father and Mother, I told them about Theo and I, and that he was moving in with me. They were quiet at first then they both said as long as your happy Son that is all that matters.
I got back in my car and drove over to Theo's, I did not know that area but he had given very specific instructions. I pulled in beside the house he said he lived in, it was a beautiful place, all the same style of houses, a church in the middle of it all. I shut off my car and got out and stood beside my car door, Theo came out of the church, he had a look about him.
He came up to me and stood in front of me.
"Well Billy seems I am going to come live with you."
I smiled and cried of course, he and I embraced as the all watched us, his parents came out and told him he would not be able to come back. I looked at them both and said.
"This is your Son, your flesh and blood, how can you let them tell you you can never see your Son ever again?"
His Mom stepped forward pulled her Son in close and told him to visit as often as he wanted too, his Dad stood there then pulled his Son in.
"Your Mother is right, you come see us as much as you like Son, we both love you very much."
To stand here and witness an Amish couple defy their church was incredible, they would of course hear about it but they both stood their ground and were allowed to see their son as much as they wanted too. It also opened doors for other families to see their children who had left the community, Theo and I got in the car and drove off.
