By morning the news continued on with its coverage of the recent attacks and the noon deadline made by the terrorists. Lloyd Bennett's people were on standby, ready to make their Plan B come to fruition. He watched the news, not impressed with the recent interviews. His next goal was sending a bigger message for all the world to see.
Carlos was awakened by the rays of the sun, not looking forward with what would transpire in the next several hours. Wide awake he discovered Helena was still in bed instead of back at her own place. Right away he got up from the bed, closing the curtains to prevent the sun's rays from touching her skin.
Helena remained asleep and Carlos just stood there, watching her and figuring out whether it was a blessing or a curse to fall in love with a vampire. Thinking about their future disturbed him the most over the fact he would grow old while she remained young and beautiful. Would she still love him when he's old and gray or find a new young man to take his place? Quietly, he planted a kiss on her shoulder and proceeded to the kitchen.
Carlos turned on the news before making himself some warm coffee, and closing all the remaining curtains in his apartment. Besides the weather and sports, the countdown clock had flashed on TV. Everyone waited and wondered all day if the terrorists would continue to do some damage upon the town.
The young lieutenant took a sip of his coffee, nearly choking on it after discovering a certain someone who still can sneak up on him just about anytime and anyplace.
"Good morning," said Helena, sitting on the kitchen counter, cross legged and wearing a white long sleeved shirt. "I don't scare you anymore my ass."
"You're always full of surprises, Blanquita," said Carlos, lifting her chin and planting a warm, good morning kiss upon the lips.
"Last night was wonderful."
"Yes, it was, but why did you stay? You usually rush right over to your place before the sun comes up."
"Your place is more cozier than mine, and I stayed because I'm worried about you."
Helena placed a comforting hand over his, putting his mind at ease. He then picked up her hand and kissed it.
"I appreciate your concern," he said. "You found my old shirt."
"Yeah, I found it in the closet all the way in the back by its lonesome self. It's a bit wrinkled but it still fits like a glove."
"I still remember the first time you wore it. You and I, sharing each other's secrets on a moonlit evening."
"I remember. I also remember you saying your shirt looks better on me."
"It still does. I'll have it ironed for next time."
"With starch?"
"If you like."
Helena giggled over the idea. Carlos' mood changed after turning his back on her, knowing she wouldn't approve of what he had in mind.
"What's wrong?" She asked. "What are you thinking?"
"I think I have an idea," he said, "but you're gonna hate it."
At the motel, Lloyd and his crew looked on at the news all morning long, waiting for word over the town's evacuation. They were disappointed when that bit of news did not come their way. Lloyd was frustrated but not surprised that the demands would not be met.
"I told you," said Sid. "They had no intention in leaving. It was a fucking waste of time."
"They all want to die," said Lenny. "That's fine by me, right Lloyd?"
"Gentleman, and ladies," said Lloyd, "it would appear no one is taking us seriously. There are still several hours left, but I think it's time they see how serious we are."
Lloyd and his people turned on their disguises to blend in with the citizens. They took their leave from the motel, leaving behind the bodies of guests and the manager piled up in the back.
Carlos was dressed and ready to leave, but not before hearing it from Helena about her concerns for his safety.
"This is insane," she said.
"You said we need to fight back," said Carlos, "and we could use someone like No Face on our side."
"No Face is crazy."
"Maybe, but we don't have a lot of time left."
"I should be going with you."
"I know, Hel."
Carlos saw how frustrated Helena was on being unable to join him in the daylight. He wished he could see her beauty shine on a warm sunny day.
"Stay here and wait for me," he said. "Hopefully No Face will agree to help out a fellow veteran."
"I don't like this one bit," she said.
"I'll be all right; I promise you."
Helena grabbed hold of his wrist, stopping him from going any further. Her grip was strong enough to break every bone in his arm.
"You better be," she said, "or I'll come find you."
"I know, mi amor, " said Carlos, taking her hand and kissing it. "I'll see you soon."
Carlos began his journey in reaching out for Sgt. No Face who lived on the other side of town. He had plenty of time to reach his place before the noon deadline. During the trip, all he could think of was Helena's concern over his well being. She had a good heart but there were times Carlos would worry about her own well being like dying for him. He hoped that day would never come. Suddenly, a disturbance caught his undivided attention, forcing him to pull over. The disturbance belonged to the sounds of heavy gun firing and ear splitting explosions.
"The hell?" Said Carlos. "It's not even noon yet."
Lloyd Bennett had a change in plan and proceeded with the attack ahead of time. It was six blocks ahead and Carlos stepped on the gas, changing his own plan in visiting No Face. The young lieutenant got a clearer view of the smoke rising and gun firing growing louder as he drew closer.
Upon the scene several vans and a few motorcycles drove by, leaving behind death and destruction as promised. It was an all out massacre. Bodies laid on the ground riddled with bullets and burning to a crisp. The places of business were left burning and the whole block was blanketed by black smoke.
"Dios mio," said Carlos, looking at the carnage all around.
He called for backup, completely forgetting he had none whatsoever. Instead he contacted the fire department and the local hospital while in pursuit of the terrorists. Carlos caught up to one of the bikers who wasted no time in pulling out a nine millimeter uzi to greet him. The young lieutenant ducked his head before having it blown off.
The second biker caught wind of the action and turned around, riding towards the two men with a Molotov cocktail in hand. Carlos slammed into the biker, forcing him off the road. He fired upon the second biker striking the cocktail and covering his body in hot searing flames. The guy fell off his bike, desperately trying to put himself out.
"Surprise, puto," said Carlos, focusing on the next biker.
He fired his weapon, missing Carlos' head by an inch. The young lieutenant responded, forcing the biker off the road. Carlos fired upon one of the vans, striking the rear tires. After emptying one clip, he reloaded and played catch up with the van.
"Woah," said the driver, feeling the impact, "what the fuck was that?"
Carlos made it to the passenger side of the cab, again turning on his siren and strobe light.
"You gotta be kidding," said the passenger.
"What?" The driver asked.
"It's a cop."
"A cop? One of those humanoid fucks?"
"No, he looks human."
The driver took a peek only to see a human hand on the steering wheel. He couldn't make out the face from his position.
"What kind of freak looks human?" The driver asked.
"Vampires."
"No, they sleep in the day."
"A half breed vampire?"
"Alert the men."
The side door slid open where one man began throwing Molotov cocktails, forcing Carlos to steer out of the way. Hot flames rained upon every block, giving the fire department plenty to do later on.
"Give me that," said one other, who wanted a turn.
He lit it up and ready to toss. Carlo fired his weapon, shattering the cocktail and turning the guy into a living, screaming torch. The driver's view was blocked by the smoke inside, getting an earful of the ear piercing screams of his comrade while the others tried their best to put him out. For a brief moment the smoke cleared, giving a view of himself ramming into the van in front of him.
The driver in the other van nearly lost control, while the one behind him was not so lucky. He steered out of control, spinning the van in circles until it smashed into the gas pumps of the nearest gas station. Soon all the men were covered in flames as the gas pumps exploded, taking the entire van with them.
