Waiting for the Light
Chapter One
~ For a brief instance, I thought I had gone deaf. Alone, sitting on the steps of the back deck, the silence felt deafening, and I shook my head. As rapidly as my world went silent, the sounds returned. The sound of an owl, off in the distance; the croaking of frogs and crickets chirping; all came back in the nightly chorus I was used to.
Taking a deep breath, I reached for a cigarette and lit it. Illuminated by the house interior lighting, I watched the grey smoke curl up and drift away, as I returned my gaze to the sky. Before the abrupt silence, I had caught sight of a bluish looking dot, moving through the sky. I searched for it, as curiosity got to me on that hot June night, in 2019 ~
"Hey, I'm feeling like an orphan... you gonna be out there all night?"
The words barely registered in my mind.
"Huh, what?"
"Jesus, Rick, do you like tuning me out?" came a reply and without waiting for an invite, Rachael, my stepsister, came out the back door and sat down on the steps next to me. "What are you doing, anyway?"
"Stargazing, mostly."
She kept quiet and looked up, leaning heavily against me. "Huh, there are a lot. So, you see anything interesting?"
Turning my head, I kissed her cheek.
"Yes, but it was weird. I saw this blue light, and suddenly everything went completely silent."
"What!?"
"I am serious. Not a frog, not a cricket... nothing. It was dead silent, and then when the sounds came back the light had disappeared."
Straightening up, Rachael turned to look at me and started whistling the theme song to 'The X- Files'.
Grinning, I pushed my shoulder against hers. "Okay, okay, I am not crazy. I know what I saw... or think I saw."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I've never seen that light, or star, or orb, whatever it was, before," I replied, and let out a heavy sigh.
Rach remained silent, rejoining me in my star gazing. "Hey, interested in a nightcap?" she questioned, as she stood up.
"Sounds good."
Rachael returned wearing only a short, spaghetti-strapped, slip handing me a drink.
"You look comfortable."
"Yeah? I was hot. I hope you don't mind." She eased down next to me.
Smiling, I held up my glass for a toast, all the while, staring at her breasts on display.
"Enjoying the view?" she quipped, offering a sexy, little, smile.
"Always."
Rach nudged me with her shoulder, making her tits jiggle. "I know, they are nice, huh?"
I smiled and turned my attention back to the stars. A long silence fell between us, with Rachael nestled against my shoulder.
"So, what do you think it was?"
"No idea," I responded, wrapping my arm over her shoulder. "It was pretty odd, is all I can say."
"Huh, I wonder if it will be back tomorrow? If you'd like, I'll come out and watch with you."
"I'd like that very much."
Following a more than suggestive kiss, she got up and started for the house.
"I'm headed for bed."
~
I was up early the next day, but not as early as Rachael. I found her in the kitchen, hunkered over her laptop.
"Hey, morning. I made coffee."
"I know, I could smell it. You're up early, what are you doing?" I replied, heading to pour a cup.
"Well, decided to do a little research. Come here and sit down."
She got up, as I approached, motioning for me to take her chair. "Check it out. You might find this interesting."
Easing down in her seat, I focused my attention on the laptop screen. Rach moved up behind me and placed her hands on my shoulders. Still in the sheer slip from the night before, her breasts pressed against my bare back.
This is the most interesting," she commented, leaning over to tap the screen with her finger.
"Ah, Rachael?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm not sure how much more I can take having you rubbing your boobs on my back."
"What, are you horny?" she blurted out and giggled.
I felt her straighten up, removing the contact of her tits. Half turning, I found her right breast at eye level.
"It's okay, just a bit distracting... not that I don't appreciate the feeling."
She forcibly turned my head back towards the laptop.
"We can talk about my boobs later... read," she commented, moving to sit in the chair next to me.
Sipping my coffee, I soon became engrossed in the article she had on the screen. Without my noticing, Rachael got up to grab the coffee pot to refill our cups. I only noticed her actions when I caught a bare breast out of the corner of my eye. Her slip's shoulder string had slid down, along with that part of the slip bodice, fully exposing her left breast.
"So, what do you think?"
"I think it's beautiful," I replied, without hesitating.
"What? What are you...?" her question ended when she realized I was talking about her bare tit and quickly reached to pull up the strap and slip bodice. "Jesus, that wasn't on purpose, and I was talking about the article."
"I know but, damn, nice nipple. Are you horny?" My reply earned a kiss on my forehead.
"Thanks, I'm glad you think so. Now, what about the article?"
Rachael had several tabs open, all having something to do with what was termed, Blue Star. The most interesting one centered around the Hopi tribe and their beliefs.
"Huh, do you really think that's what I saw?" I questioned, looking towards her.
Rach shrugged. "Not sure. Maybe. Hopefully we'll get a better look tonight."
I went through the remaining tabs and commended her for her thoroughness. Overall, the Hopi article caught my attention the most, and I found myself thinking about it throughout the day. Honestly, it gave me chills, as I mentally questioned what it was that they had experienced to have such a belief. End of the old world, start of a new world? Old world... our world? What did end mean... destruction... Armageddon? Was this star really an asteroid? An asteroid that the Hopis believed would return to hit the Earth. Mentally going into overload, I shook my head and cursed.
"Jesus, enough already!" I shouted aloud, making Rachael question what was wrong.
"Nothing... just thinking too much."
"About?"
"Aw this Blue Star thing, it's got me bugged."
Laughing, she asked, "Why? I mean... maybe it's like the Mayan 2012 thing."
This time I laughed. "Fine, but I do have a question."
"Ask away, babe."
"Well... where would you like to be if it were, you know, really the end of things?"
"Huh, not a trick question, right?"
I shook my head no.
Rachael walked out on the deck, and stopped at a deck post, hugging it, looking out over the field. "Right here I guess."
"Seriously, there's no exotic place you'd want to be?"
Turning slowly, she gazed at me for a long time.
"Nope, not really. Right here is fine... having sex with you."
Laughing, I tried to make light of her comment.
"Go out with a bang, is that it?"
Turning to look my way, Rach grinned.
"Something like that, yeah. Figure the last thing on my mind, and... in me, should be you."
Her answer stunned me, not to mention feel guilty for what I'd said. "Sorry, I wasn't making fun of you."
"I know," she replied, turning back to looking over the field.
I joined her and kissed the nape of her neck. "We still on for tonight?"
"Wouldn't miss it."
