1779 Versailles Romance

April, 1779, at the palace of Versailles, France. Marie Antoinette, tired of the pressures of court life, retreats into her private world in her own domains beyond the Gardens of Versailles. She takes her entourage of best female and male friends among the nobility and they have a month long stay at her Chateau, the Petit Trianon. The handsome and adventurous Count Axel von Fersen arrives and stays as a guest. The women are all attracted to him and openly flirt with him but he is in love with Marie Antoinette. The Comtesse Paulette Delancourt, jealous of Marie Antoinette's beauty and power, wants Fersen for herself and attempts to seduce him. He rejects her and reveals to her that it is Marie Antoinette that he wants. The Comtesse vows revenge against Marie Antoinette. She discovers that Marie Antoinette and Fersen are lovers. The Comtesse goes into the city of Paris and tells a publisher of salacious fictional reports of yellow journalism that the Queen is betraying the king and her country with the Swedish Count and that at her private domain she has orgies where she has sex with both men and women. These false stories will be the first step into bringing down the Queen and making her appear as not only a spendthrift who is costing the economy to be hit hard but also as a promiscuous and bad queen. The people in the town read the stories and begin to hate the Queen and prepare themselves for the French Revolution. Meanwhile back at the Trianon, the Count Axel Von Fersen bids farewell to Marie Antoinette telling her that he must never return to avoid gossip and to protect her reputation. Marie Antoinette does not know the end is near.
