The tornado loomed in the distance. I'd heard it'd crossed over into Frankland County near noon. Now it looked more like midnight. The sky was black. The wind was mean. Yet, out there, on the streets, people were wondering around like zombies.
In fact, they were zombies... I sighed...
They'd all tried this new drink. It was called, Zombie. What no one knew was that the Zombie drink actually turned people into zombie-like characters for a few hours. The more you drank of it the longer you stayed under until finally you didn't come back at all. The officials had been trying to remove it from the market for years. But, every time they were able to shut down one business several more opened up. People loved the drink. Some even liked the side effects.
The key ingredient came from tornado's dust as it swirled around and around. Once it landed on the ground all you had to do was look for the little shiny pieces of crystallized glass which you pressed into your skin. It melted, you got high. Businesses had spend time acquiring the crystallized glass and sold it as a drink. The drink was more lethal. So when the bad part arrived it arrived much faster from drinking the drink over pressing the crystallized glass into your body. After a few months of getting high the parts of your body where the crystallized glass had been pressed just fell off. People didn't seem to notice or care.
The drink, on the other hand, softens your insides. So, you literary die from the inside out. It was like a suicide drink. the government had disapproved of when there was a government to disapprove of it.
Once you started, drinking you couldn't stop. Businesses created tornadoes just to collect the glass. The created tornadoes couldn't be controlled. Major parts of the world had been destroyed along time ago.
Because of this, most of the world and the people living within, us that is, had been destroyed by the tornadoes. We had, in fact, sealed our own fate! There was no government anymore. Everyone just wanted to get high.
I was beginning to think I needed to join up and become a zombie too. I didn't know anyone else who'd refused to drink the stuff. It was lonely being the only non-zombie around.
The world was gonna end in just a few hours. I'd decided this by observation. Both the girls knew this from the apartment below me. They got high too. Both the boys knew it from the apartment above me. Also, druggies. We all knew this, but those of us who cared, couldn't do anything about it. We just watched the world as it slowly fell away.
I glanced out the window again. The tornado was approaching. Already the zombie folks, walking the streets, were being sucked up into the wind screaming their lungs out!
Me? I just stood by watching. There was nothing I could do, except scream too.
I had no friends left. Death seemed like a lost friend. I held my breath when I heard the sound of bricks being torn off the side of the building. It seemed like my lost friend had returned home to claim me. I took a sip of my water and held my breath.
Then it stopped. I waited, listened and heard nothing. With caution, I walked over to the window to glance outside. Zip! I was sucked out the window into the center of the tornado!
My head was spinning faster then I was! But a few seconds later I was tossed out onto the dirty zombie filled streets along with others who'd already been sucked into the tornado.
I didn't seem to be hurt by the transformation, which surprised me. Those who had been tossed out with me seemed to be pretty messed up.
They had body parts sticking out at odd angles, bashed in head wounds, and missing body parts. But none of them seemed to care. They all just looked at the ground around them, pressed their fingers into the dust and then pressed the dusty glass crystals into their bodies. After that they just laid there moaning as if they were having sex.
Was this the death of mankind, or was this the next stage in mankind's evolution?
I had no way of knowing the answer. The scientists who could predict such things had long since died. No one who had any brains still lived or was awake enough to think and process.
