1967 Hippie Romance

Karen Anderson is a beautiful upper-class blonde beauty who drops out of Columbia University in New York City in order to travel to San Francisco California to start a bohemian, non-conformist independent life as a singer. Originally she believes she will make decent money as a folk singer. She is a very good singer and plays guitar and hopes to become a celebrity singer in the style of Joan Baez. She pays cheap rent and lives in a small flop house she shares with two other roommates who are a hippie couple, named Rainbow and Raindrop. They introduce her to LSD and magic mushrooms and marijuana. She does not want to get too deep into drugs in order to be sober enough to enjoy a career as a recording artist. When she tires of the irresponsible and lazy no direction in life way of living that Rainbow and Raindrop adopt as a lifestyle, she moves away from their home near the Golden Gate Bridge and the park and moves into the Haight Ashbury district just in time for the Summer of Love. A huge number of hippies, artists, street performers, poets, dancers and freethinkers invade the town. They are doing more drugs and there is always a police presence to keep things under control. During the months of July and August, while living by herself in an an upper floor apartment and making a living by singing in cafes and restaurants, she falls in love with a police officer on a motorcycle, Officer Emery Stratten. They could not be any more different. She is 21 and he is older at 40. He is conservative, pro-establishment, vanilla square and wants to find a simple housewife to have children with, and Karen is an independent adventuresome free spirit. They make love in such places as his apartment, her apartment, and on a hill outside San Francisco overlooking the bay and the city near the bridge. Karen has had many lovers and sexual experiences and she teaches new ways of making love to the 'square' police officer. Eventually, Karen becomes pregnant and considers having an abortion. Emery does not want her to do it and threatens to leave her. She decides to change her life and have a baby with him and be his wife. All she asks is that he let her sing and be her own woman sometimes when she feels like making art, sitting in for a life art class modeling in the nude and harmless little things that will make her feel like herself. Emery agrees. They get married in the San Francisco Courthouse and move out of San Francisco and down to Los Angeles when Emery takes a new position as detective in Los Angeles.
