It is the early morning hours of February 25th, 1601, in London. Queen Elizabeth I has been unable to sleep in her palace of Richmond. The only man she has ever loved, Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, has been sentenced to death for treason and rebellion against her. Devereux is imprisoned in the Tower. His execution in the morning can only be prevented if he returns a special ring that she gave him for her to pardon him. But no such ring has been returned all night and Devereux has only a couple of hours to live before the execution. During her melancholia, the Queen remembers her life and how difficult it had been for her to be a normal woman who could find love and marry. She remembered her love for her master of the horse Robert Dudley the Earl of Leicester, whose wife Amy Robsart died after a fall from the stairs in her home.
