Next day, the Sunday, Harold presented himself at the McPhersons. It was to be their farewell. They were scheduled to leave for Singapore on the Tuesday.

Lydia opened the door. She was as beautiful and fresh as always, but suddenly Harold saw her in another light, and he felt slightly embarrassed.

He had slept with other women than she, his idol, in the meantime! The realisation reverberated in his mind.

Lydia with her infallible female intuition at once noticed his remorse from the way he lowered his eyes.

"Hi Harold, I am proud of you!" she said and kissed him on the cheek.

"Come in, I'll explain why."

Glen was in the kitchen and Lydia and Harold sat down at the table with him.

Harold realised that it was inappropriate to bring flowers, so he had bought Lydia a little silver pendant in the form of a heart.

Lydia was visibly moved when she took it from its package and hung it around her neck.

She stood up and gave Harold a warm kiss on the lips.

After some introductory chat about Harold's preparations for his university studies and about the arrangements for their move of the McPhersons, they inevitably came upon their relationship.

Lydia said that she and Glen had greatly enjoyed their relationship with Harold and that, had they not have to move, they would have loved to continue it.

Glen nodded in agreement.

She continued, "Moreover we are proud of you. You know why?"

Harold shook his head.

"Yesterday I had a call from Annie. She thanked me profusely for introducing you to her and she said that your first dates went extremely well. In fact, her partner seems to be over the moon.

We, Glen and I, have obviously had a good influence on you."

Harold started to blush.

Both Glen and Lydia noticed his embarrassment and Glen said, "you need to explain yourself to Harold, my dear."

Lydia stroked Harold's cheek affectionately.

"OK, I will try," she said, "bear with me Harold, you know that I am a teacher, don't you?"

First, you need to understand the difference between 'love' and 'lust'.

'Love' is sentiments, a state of mind, a strong affection for someone.

It can exist without lust, such as the love between parents and children.

But it can be combined with lust and then people typically cohabit or marry in our societies.

In our societies it is often seen as exclusive, only for one partner. Me and Glen for example, or Annie and her partner.

'Love' between adults is a lot more likely to find between partners of similar age, because of the necessary exchange of feelings, experiences and opinions. And being in similar stages in life definitely helps.

'Lust' is a more primeval feeling. It is the motivation for females and males to mate and procreate. A mating instinct. Absolutely essential for evolution! I am sure you are aware of that from your biology lessons.

Now nature has made males and females of many races, including humans, capable of feeling lust for more than one partner for sex, you know, mating and everything around that, arousal etcetera. For obvious reasons.

That is what compels many people to continue looking for sex partners other than their steady loved ones; that is why so many women have lovers and so many men have mistresses.

Females also tend to look for healthy males to impregnate them and the younger the better, as long as they can protect them.

Now, that is what we have been doing in our relationship with you. Responding to this primeval urge to mate, to have sex with multiple partners.

Voila! That is what I meant, when I said that we are proud of you.

I know, it is also indirectly a complement to us, but so what?

Lydia looked at him affectionally.

"We will not forget you either. We can stay in contact if you like."

The 'we' in her reaction struck him again and made him aware of the real nature of their relationship. Lydia belonged to Glen and were in a different league and age bracket. Their relationship with Harold had been a nice diversion for them and a way of satisfying their sexual needs. Apart from temporarily overcoming Glen's particular erectile handicap.

They were well established in their life and careers whilst he still had most of his life before him.

Still, they had developed a special bond bridging the age gap, thanks to their high degree of intimacy.

For the last time Lydia allowed him to help her preparing to nurse her twins.

Glen joined them and served Harold and himself a drink.

Together they watched Lydia breastfeeding.

"You are lucky with that too with Annie and her partner, I understand," Lydia said, pointing at her breasts and smiling conspiratorially.

Harold laughed and nodded.

They did not feel like having sex that last night.

At the end of a pleasant evening, Harold left after a warm embrace by both Lydia and Glen and mutual promises to stay in contact.

When he came home, he did feel a sudden loneliness.

But the feeling was soon dispelled by his realising that now there were Anny and Emmy eagerly waiting for him.
