I like the loving wives category but it can be difficult to come up with something different and the comments are often ruthless. I try to explore alternate realities or situations with angst.
I do spell and grammar checks and proofread but bound to miss some. If that bothers you too much maybe think about reading something else.
Please check the tags, don't read it if it's not your thing. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy it, they are free and they are just stories.
Best Wishes, Satin
This is one of three stories set in England during WWII. These are intended as erotic stories without comment to the morals or otherwise of the actual people alive at that time. They are an exaggeration of what could happen and not intended to be realistic.
Britain was at war with Germany and the axis powers. It was a time of major upheaval; men, women and children endured extreme hardship and distress in one form or another; few people escaped the rigors of life in wartime. The country had to endure bombing raids, including the threat of gas attacks. Starvation was a real possibility and rationing of food began in 1940. Meat, sugar, butter, cheese, and eggs and even clothing were rationed. Over a million children were evacuated from towns and cities and had to adjust to separation from family and friends. London was attacked on 57 successive nights and there were heavy raids on other major cities and ports.
Women and children between the ages of 14 and 17 were in full-time employment, many covering work vacated by men who fought across the globe. Children reaching 18 were conscripted, the boys into the armed services and girls to women's auxiliary services, the land army or taking on other essential war work, including working as mechanics, engineers and on munitions.
All three stories are set in an imaginary English village of Little Woodhill. Each story can be read separately.
This story considers a scenario where the Nazi's win 'the Battle of Britain' and invade the British Isles, under the planned operation 'Sea Lion'. It is the opposite result of this first story 'The Bakers Wife'; this possibility is covered in a range of books including Robert Harris's Fatherland.
By the time America joins the war, it is too late! They have nowhere to gain a foothold in Europe. All of Europe's resources are now turned against the US; while the Americans are fighting on two fronts, the Pacific and Atlantic. The decision not to support Britain earlier now seemed catastrophic!
Neutral countries, including Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Ireland are also under axis control. Japanese forces sweep through Asia and Australia. Russia is barely holing on, with Germany able to deploy the majority of its forces on its Eastern front. There is talk of a treaty and Russia withdrawing from the conflict.

Katherine or 'Kate' Prendergast wasn't lady of the manor, but she was as close as anyone got to such a thing in their small quiet village. She lived in the old rectory with her husband Peter until the disaster of the invasion.
At 37 years old and with a slim figure, she was an attractive and elegant woman, very much an 'English Rose'. She had a temperament to match: kind, caring and interested in others. She rode horses which kept her fit as well as providing a healthy complexion that complimented her long blonde hair. That might have come from long distant Saxon or Viking heritage.
They were financially well off before the war but that meant little these days! Kate was the unofficial lead for many of the village activities and committees.
She knew she could attract men but had fallen completely for her husband; who was a very handsome young captain when they had first met. He'd taken his men to defend the coast, but superior German airpower had won the day. To Kate's horror there were reports that Major Peter Prendergast has been killed in action during the German landings.
The vast majority of army units were evacuated from the Western ports to British colonies and Canada, but smaller volunteer units fled into the mountains and forests of Northern England, Scotland and Wales to continue a guerrilla war against the Nazis.
***
The pristine armoured cars and trucks that headed toward their village sent shock waves through the small population. Kate was by no means an expert but she recognised the dreaded SS insignia.
They arrived and immediately rounded up everyone. The few older men remaining and teenage boys were told they would be confined in a prison camp and work the fields every day. They were forced into the trucks amidst screams and crying from family members, unsure if they'd ever see them again.
The women were shepherded into the village square. A cruel looking officer announced that the German soldiers would be billeted within the village, in addition the women were to be 'allocated' by lots to the soldiers. They dragged the first woman onto the market cross steps; Kate recognised her friend's 16 year old daughter, she looked absolutely terrified! They started drawing lots eagerly to see who who 'win' the pretty young girl.
Kate stepped forward and begged them to stop, asking what kind of men they were?
The officer laughed at her, "We are the winners Fraulein, it cost us a lot and we're far from home, so now we are taking our rewards. As you want to help the girl, you can go first instead, but a lady such as yourself is a special prize. Maybe we will draw three winning lots for you and you can entertain all of them, we'll see how much fight you have in you after that!"
"Screw you, you coward!"
"You and the other ladies will all be getting fucked tonight; it's up to you how it goes. Go along with it and have a nice time or you will all be forced; and we wouldn't want any harm coming to the children would we. I'll take the girl, Lieutenant why not show the men the star prize."
A soldier stood up and lifted the hem of Kate's dress showing her stockings and suspenders. She slapped him hard and pushed her dress back down. The soldier was furious and backhanded her across the face before ripping open her dress revealing her bra. The men started braying to draw lots and win the stunning prize that was now on show.
The lot drawing was interrupted by the sight of another military column. It was German as well, the SS officer looked concerned. The half-tracks and trucks looked old and dirty with obvious signs of damage. The lead vehicle pulled into the square whilst others circled the village, masses of soldiers spilled out efficiently, taking positions without the need for orders.
A tall blonde man in a dusty uniform strode up to the SS officer. He seemed to take in the scene before him with Kate's ripped dress and the hysterical young girl being held.
"You are relieved Hauptmann (Captain), we have been allocated this sector for forward operations."
"Nonsense, a regular army unit does not take precedence over the SS."
"Maybe not these days, but we are tasked with eliminating the insurgents, a task I doubt you would be willing to undertake. Perhaps you should leave it to those who know what they are doing and run along."
The blatant insult infuriated the SS Captain, "You can conduct your orders from elsewhere, we are the same rank and the SS carries seniority."
"That's not actually true, my years of service carry the seniority, I was an officer well before the war, and before you and your like turned up. That point is mute however, as I have recently been given a field promotion, so it's Major Schmit to you! Now unless you are refusing to follow a direct order, I'd suggest you and your troops move on and let my more experienced men handle the region. Go back to London and leave the fighting to us Captain!"
"We will see about this!"
The new Officer looked totally at ease, "There is another reason you should leave of course, you have managed to get you and your men surrounded... gross incompetence at best which I could report!"
Despite the bluster, the SS officer ordered his men to prepare to leave, adding, "Bring the two women for interrogation."
"I don't think so Captain, they stay here... she is a child for Christ's sake. Go now or face the consequences!"
The regular soldiers shifted slightly, giving every indication they were ready to act. The SS left in a hurry led by the totally disgruntled officer.
The Major brought Kate a blanket allowing her to regain some modesty. She wasn't relieved; the new soldiers looked altogether tougher and were probably more ruthless. She wondered if they had just jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire.
"I am sorry Miss, that should not have happened and it won't happen again!"
Kate felt a sense of relief but wouldn't bring herself to thank him.
"My name is Major Schmit, I am sorry for the disruption but we do need to billet the men in the village and some proper beds would make a welcome change. We can use spare rooms, there is no need to throw families out of their homes. I personally guarantee that none of you will be coerced by my men; the penalty for doing so is hanging!"
There were looks on unease between the women but no sound of protest as the Major continued, "Who owns the house there by the green? I need to use it as headquarters?"
Kate lifted her head, "That's mine... mine and my husbands."
"Ah, then it looks like I will be your guest."
The Major turned and told his adjutant to radio their Colonel to recite what the SS captain was up to. They didn't need this happening in another village stoking up even greater resistance. It felt like they were ambushed from every hedgerow as it were.
Just then a shot rang out, everyone dove for cover.
"The Major is hit."
"Sniper... church tower."
Men moved rapidly, there was tense wait and some gun fire was heard. A few minutes later two soldiers marched a boy out of the church by the scruff of the neck.
"Here is our would be assassin!"
Kate panicked, the blood draining from her, it was her nephew Billy! The major stood up from cover, trying to stem the flow of blood from his upper arm.
Kate pleaded, "Please don't hurt him... he's only a boy!"
The Major turned toward him, "How old are you?"
Billy stood taller shrugging off the soldiers grip, "13, nearly 14."
"Were you aiming for me?"
"I was aiming for an officer, just like how the French got Admiral Nelson!"
"Smart man and that was pretty good shot at that distance with that gun. Do you know the penalty?"
Kate pleaded again, "Please don't, I'll do anything you want."
The Major hesitated looking at her, she certainly was a fine looking woman, before returning his attention to the young boy, "Well I can't let you go, I doubt you'd miss a second time! You know that other officer would have killed you and all of your family... maybe the whole village!"
Billy's eyes widened, "I, I don't want anyone else to get in to trouble, it was my idea, no one else knew! You should just blame me... if you're a real soldier."
The Major laughed out loud, "It's been a long time since anyone questioned my honour! Is there any way you can convince me you won't try it again?"
Billy looked down speaking quietly, "I promise not to, I don't have any other bullets or the rifle now, but I wouldn't want to put my mum at risk, dad said I had to look after her."
For the first time tears filled Billy's eyes.
Take him away Lieutenant, just guard him... nothing else. It's getting late and we need to get organised, I will decide what to do with him in the morning."
***
Kate was allowed to return home and change her dress. She was worried... was the delay to test if she really would do anything the Major wanted in order to save Billy? Looking at herself in the mirror hesitating, could she really do that? She lifted her chin... if that is what it took she would be willing, other people were making far bigger sacrifices in the war.
The troops moving into houses ran remarkably smoothly, most people stayed in their homes and the soldiers used spare rooms. A mess tent on the village green and served food, the villagers were invited to eat and with little other food available took up the offer.
It was after nightfall by the time Kate answered the door with dread, opening it to find the Major standing there. She was surprised by the fact that he had bothered to knock. She invited him in as he thanked her and sat at her kitchen table.
"Sorry I don't know your name and it seems we will be housemates for a while at least."
"It's Katherine, Katherine Prendergast."
"It's an honour to meet you Katherine; I am Maj... no I am Thomas, Thomas Schmit."
An awkward silence followed until Kate broke it, "Did you save Billy because I offered to do anything you wanted. If that's what you want... I will do it, we can't lose Billy as well, he is the only son my sister has left!"
Thomas looked sad, "There is no need, I wouldn't ask that of you."
That left Kate feeling relieved but uncertain and maybe... even a little rejected... then she wondered about what he did want.
He seemed to read her mind, "A clean bed and sleep would be a precious gift."
Being in the same house as another man was disconcerting, Kate struggled to sleep, thinking about what fate awaited Billy in the morning. She thought about walking into the bedroom next door and offering herself to the Major. He'd said he wouldn't ask it of her, but if she offered willingly that might save Billy!
She got as far as the door, he looked totally exhausted and was in the sleep of the dead, only a slight rise in this chest gave an indication he was still breathing. Kate retreated, now even more uncertain of herself and what tomorrow would bring.
***
Billy was brought in the following day, his guards, Thomas and Kate faced each other across the kitchen.
"Well, we have to figure out what to do with you!"
Thomas caught Billy's glance toward the knife rack, "You aren't going to stab me, are you?"
It looked like Billy was thinking about it for a second, "No I promised."
"I understand what you did, I would do the same... but you are so young."
"I am old enough!"
"You are right; there are others your age fighting. Still I wouldn't needlessly sacrifice young men for no reason, whatever side they are on. Wanting to fight is fine, but part of being a soldier is assessing what is possible and choosing the right time. What you did was suicidal not tactical, you should fight smart... like your men in the hills."
Billy smiled, "Risking my life for a Major... it's seemed like a smart move to me!"
Thomas was taken aback, it was a cold clinical assessment. Billy was right, he would have made the same decision, in fact he had made similar assessments in just about every fight he'd been in. It was all so thoroughly disheartening, children willing to sacrifice their futures.
He shook his head, " Where do you live?"
"On our farm a couple of miles outside of town with my mum."
Thomas seemed deep in thought and was quiet for a while, "It was a brave act, and such bravery doesn't deserve death! Are you willing to go back to your farm and not cause us any more trouble?"
Billy nodded, "Yeah, you have my word."
"So I have your word as a soldier, no repeat of this. Promises are easy to break in war Billy; your word is much harder to keep. I am going to trust you so don't make me regret it. I am not asking you to never fight, just wait until you can join a regular unit. Let him go Corporal!"
"Sir, are you sure?"
"Certain I have his word, there is nothing to be gained from yet another death and I am not about to start killing children. Billy, I hope one day this will all be over and you will have another life!"
Kate broke down crying, hugging Billy with all of her might. His escape from what seemed like certain death was palpable. She ushered him outside, tears of relief flowing from her eyes.
"Stay on the farm Billy, we all just escaped a catastrophe!"
He nodded and left looking far too grown up in Kate's eyes.
Kate returned to her kitchen, "Thank you... but why did you do that for Billy?"
Thomas shrugged, "Lots of reasons, he gave me his word and it was a brave act. I actually liked him, you should be very proud of him. He stood up to all of us, a boy that age... well it was really quite remarkable! I have seen so much and yet still he surprised me."
Thomas thought of all the promises he'd broken and what had happened to the young man he once was, a man who once had same ideals as young Billy. Hopefully there was still some of him left. Had he saved Billy or was he trying to redeem his own soul... the latter felt like a losing battle.
"He is too much like his Father and Uncle, but I can't thank you enough for saving him. Does your arm hurt, I could redress it?"
"Thank you but its fine, it just grazed me."
"Your English is flawless, where did you learn."
"I learned from a young age and studied for three years at Cambridge before the war."
Kate found another dressing and insisted on changing his bandages. The Major conceded and removed his jacket and vest. He towered over Kate before retaking his seat. She began to change the dressings, noticing numerous other scars over his strongly muscled torso.
He saw her staring, "Not my first graze Katherine, I am not sure if I am lucky or unlucky."
He sat quietly as she dressed his wound, "And to answer your question further... maybe I am tired, tired of it all, all the death! You know this village is just like mine back home, but I haven't seen it for 3 years. That girl yesterday reminded me of my own niece, it's all so..."
He seemed to shake himself, "Sorry that is not something I have shared before, I would appreciate your confidence, my men shouldn't ever hear such reflections, they need certainty!"
"I won't say anything, but you shouldn't worry about feeling like that... Thomas, it shows you're human."
"I hope and pray you're right Katherine, I really do!"
***
Katherine lay in bed thinking about the events of the last two days and the German officer currently billeted in the next room. He had been remarkably forgiving, yet she thought he was one of the most dangerous men she'd ever met. He reminded her of Peter her husband, that mixture of humanity and toughness. Her thoughts moved to memories of Peter, from all accounts he was lost to her, killed in action months earlier.
On a daily basis the soldiers treated her and the other villagers with respect; she became on unofficial spokesmen and raised issues with the Major. He always responded with courtesy and kindness. Despite trying her best not to, she had to admit liking him and dreaded to think what the alternative might have been. It was clear that not all the occupying forces acted in such a manner, there were horrific stories of punishments, torture and even massacres.
The Germans were frustrated; Kate heard enough to understand they had been tasked with clearing Northumberland of all insurgency. It was a far from easy task; it was beautiful but could be a harsh landscape. The hills and forest were extensive and sparsely inhabited. The remaining British soldiers although few in number were very effective, well organised they could live off the land, using hit and run tactics. It was similar story in Wales and Scotland. In those areas, the Germans had burned down farms and remote villages, putting the population in camps, but to no avail. The Brits raided German supply lines and there was an abundance of wild deer and hill livestock to live on.
Kate offered Thomas a cup of tea as they sat in the parlour late at night, "Will the fighting be over soon?"
Thomas's reply was remarkably open, "Not for a while, it's attrition now, they have the advantage of knowing the land. We haven't fought like that, out in the open we'd win easily, but they have snipers picking us off then disappearing. They organise lightning raids; hitting depots and supply lines. We know some of them are SEO 'Special Operations Executive' and commando units.
"Won't they send some other soldiers to relieve you?"
"Trust me Katherine, you don't want that; they would 'remove' the local population."
Kate was quiet for a long time, "Thank you Thomas... for how you have treated us and me. I realise it could have been very different!"
***
They spend most evenings together, Thomas took great interest in Kate's life before the war and asked about her marriage and husband. He commiserated Kate on her loss; it was something they shared, Thomas having lost his wife in one of the few allied bombing raids before the invasion. Kate was equally interested in Thomas and village life in Germany. Despite being from two different countries they had a lot in common.
Kate thought talking about their past helped Thomas unwind from the daily grind of guerrilla warfare. It was clearly taking a toll, although she was the only one who could see it. Outside of the house, Thomas was a calm professional soldier, idolised by his men.
She knew she was attracted to Thomas; she'd been trying to deny it for months. Other women in the village were now with some of the soldiers. Most were single; a couple were widows like Kate but not all! Many like her thought all hope was lost and they needed to survive. She was certain the war was all but over, there was no way back for the allies. German occupation was now a permanent reality; over time the occupiers would be integrated with the population.
Thomas, give him his due never pushed any boundaries. Despite admitting that she might like something to happen, it still felt wrong and she resisted.
***
Thomas entered the house visibly shaking; Kate made him some sweet tea, sacrificing the precious sugar she had left. It took a while for her to prise the story from him, he'd set himself up as bait, trying to lure a British attack. He knew there were snipers in the area and had men working back through the forest hunting them. A Major's presence would keep them interested. In an incredibly risky move, he made himself a target for hours despite the protests of his men. That wasn't what had him in shock, the attack never came! Instead the Brits had withdrawn and attacked a German forward base. Thomas had lost 12 of his men, he was muttering that they were just boys... all burned... screaming... and that it was all his fault!
Kate was conflicted, she had feelings for Thomas, ignoring the uniform he was a good man, a lot like her husband. He could have taken her twelve months ago, but had never pressed for anything. Now she could feel his vulnerability, war took its toll on everyone regardless of sides and he was hurting. She wanted to care for him and held him until he stopped shaking and then... they kissed!
He all but lifted her up as he kissed her, he felt so strong and powerful but looked so lost; the kiss intensified.
He led them to her bedroom and stood her in front of her long dressing mirror, standing behind and wrapping his arms around her, breathing in the smell of her hair.
His large hands covered her breasts squeezing firmly, Kate let out a gasp. With that he started undoing the buttons of her dress, revealing the swell of her breasts held firmly by the long line over-bust girdle. He pushed the dress from her shoulders, letting it fall to the floor. Then he began to slip her French knickers down, she had to wiggle to get them over her hips before they finally fell to her ankles.
She saw Thomas' intense stare in the mirror as she stood there in just her remaining underwear, "You look absolutely divine Katherine!"
Kate looked again at the mirror, noting the shaping effect of her girdle. The satin tummy panel helped flatten her stomach and accentuated her hips and breasts, while the open bottom was finished with six suspender straps holding her stockings firmly in place.
Thomas slipped off her shoulders straps, peeling the material below her breasts, which pushed them up emphasising her size. Then he tugged the girdle up exposing the lower part of her vagina.
"Absolutely divine!" he repeated.
As she turned toward him, Thomas swept her off her feet, holding her effortlessly in his arms before walking over to the bed and placing her on it. Then he started to undress himself, Katherine looked away feeling slightly embarrassed.
"Don't do that... look at me, like I look at you."
Katherine stared as more and more skin came into view, he was an impressive physical specimen, tall and athletic. He made sure she was still looking as his finally removed his shorts. He was erect and well... big, he paused to let her look at his cock; there was no denying it, he was very aroused, aroused for her!
He leant over and kissed her again as his body lay down next to her. As he rose above her, Kate spread her legs, Thomas lifted a leg over hers, his thigh resting against her fanny, she could feel the power as he tensed his muscles against her and let herself grind against him. He moved his other leg over as Kate spread herself further.
Thomas pushed his cock against her, its length pressed against her mound. Pausing he kissed her before easing back and placing his cock head against her entrance. She felt the firm push for several seconds before her lips parted and he entered her with a loud groan. He waited before easing out slightly and then forward relentlessly. Kate dug her fingers into his shoulders.
A muffled "Oooo" was the only sound she could manage.
Then he eased back again, before ploughing forwards, filling her. That was just the beginning; he began thrusting into her, steadily increasing the pressure before finally bottoming out. Kate was now holding on for dear life and panting heavily.
The rhythm and thrusting continued to increase, just when she thought he was flat out, he managed to thrust harder. Kate felt the stirring of an orgasm and pleaded with Thomas to take her. The sensations were just mind blowing, Thomas kissed her hard as he thrust away, grunting with the effort. The orgasm sent her dizzy; Thomas fucked her through it before finally exploding inside of her.
"Oh my God!"
"Indeed, that was an amazing experience Katherine, you're so beautiful and that was such a gift, I am honoured to have received it.
Kate was still dizzy, if anyone needed to be thanked for giving it was Thomas, he'd certainly given her a lot and she delighted in every moment.
That was the first of many times they were intimate together, they began sharing a bed and made love most nights. When they were together if felt right, just the two of them and Thomas was a good man. But the reality of life brought guilt flooding back into her mind? She was conflicted, her friends and family would never understand and what would Peter think about her if he was still alive!
Thomas wanted to take her out, but Kate was worried about how people would react, she wouldn't go locally but agreed to go to meet him in London on occasion. Thomas brought her presents including some modern dresses from Paris which showed off more of a woman's figure, higher hem lines and and lower neck lines and the fit was tighter. She needed the sliming effect of her structured underwear to look good in them, for his part Thomas loved showing her off.
Several months later, Kate realised she was pregnant, she wanted to tell Thomas but things weren't going well with the fighting, so she delayed. If anything the resistance was growing; they seem better supplied and more heavily armed.
They had talked about marriage but Kate remained conflicted, recollecting the plans she had with Peter to start a family. She made a meal and was preparing to share the news with Thomas, but before that could happen all hell broke loose.
The Russian's were back in the war!!!
The fragile treaty with Germany broke after they edged further into Russian territory. Russia had used the time wisely to re-arm and fought back with a vengeance. Hitler ever consistent ordered a full scale invasion, breaking one of the commandments of warfare about never invading the Russian interior and failing to heed Napoleon's lesson. The vast majority of forces were being redirected to the eastern front, including Thomas's unit. He had to report to London within 24hours and arrange for his unit to ship out. Everything was in turmoil; he was busy making all of the arrangements and barely had time to talk to Kate.
Their parting was hurried, kissing urgently as Kate cried, his final words were, "Stay here and stay alive, I will come back for you!"
Kate continued to weep as he drove away clutching onto her stomach. Should she have told him? She didn't want to give him something else to worry about, he needed to focus on staying alive without any distraction.

Amazingly, the tide in the war was turning. The American's had mobilised their full industrial might, supported by Canada and Mexico. British Units long in exile, landed in the western islands of Scotland. They pushed through Scotland linking up with what remainder of the insurgency units who had fought on alone for two long years. Commonwealth and American troops followed, sweeping across the country as Germany retreated to the continent.
Resistance was growing and supported across Europe, further stretching the German forces. The war in Russia cost millions of men from both sides, many freezing or starving to death. Rumours of allied invasions in Spain, Sicily or the Dardanelles circulated, but it was Britain that became the staging post for further invasion. That was rendered mute by the Americans winning the race to the atomic bomb; Germany, Japan and their allies capitulated in light of the the devastating new weapon.
After the German retreat, their little village was liberated; it was almost surreal... the impossible happened. Kate and the other villagers cheered a column of British troops. Kate self-consciously held onto her swollen belly fearing for her child's future. No doubt some people would be keen to take revenge on 'collaborators', despite the fact they all did what they needed to survive. Would the women who stayed loyal turn on her and the others? She'd heard the stories of women being tarred and feathered in other countries, sometimes they were stripped publicly or had all of their hair shorn.
It was weeks later when a jeep stopped on the village green and a tall lean British officer stepped out! It couldn't be... he was long dead! He looked older, tired and he was a Colonel... but there was no doubt, she was sure it was him. He turned and caught her eye, there was no doubt now, it was Peter... her Peter; that recognition was her last thought before she fainted.
Kate woke up in bed and immediately started panicking. She was so happy Peter was alive, it was a miracle... then it dawned on her: she had betrayed him. It can't be true, what had she done! Dread overcame her, she was absolutely distraught. He must have seen her stomach, he was sure to abandon her and who knew where Thomas was or even if he was alive. She hadn't heard anything from him in months.
Her sister came in and held her, "Is it really him, my Peter."
"Yes Kate it's Peter."
"Did he, did he see... my condition."
"Shhh try and get some more sleep, think of the baby. Peter brought you here and said he'd be back later."
"What have I done, I need to find him and explain!"
Kate went to stand, it was then her waters broke, sixteen hours later she gave birth to a healthy blonde baby boy.

"I can't believe you are here and this is real. I am so sorry Peter, they had been so sure you had been killed at Dover fighting the invasion; witnesses saw it, they just couldn't find a body. I was devastated but tried my best to carry on; I couldn't stop thinking about you... I begged and prayed for your return and now that miracle has happened but I have destroyed it all."
"The story of my death suited us, it avoided me being targeted if I led the resistance and it was safer for my men. I am sorry we couldn't get word to you, it was just too risky and none of us expected to survive for long, certainly not for over two years. What happened to you when the Germans arrived?"
"They didn't turn up in the village until a couple of months after you were reported as killed in action. A regular army unit saved us from the SS; they were going to... rape all the women. The new army unit made the village their base, I think it saved it and us from reprisals, some of the stories from other places sounded horrific."
Peter blew out a long breath, "Those stories are true, every success we had came at a cost."
Kate continued, "Their commander was a Major, Thomas Schmit. He billeted here in the spare room; nothing happened for twelve months, he was a gentleman and never touched me in all that time. I guess we grew close, the fact he was German meant less over time.
"Did you want something to happen?"
"I... I, yes, I am sorry but it happened naturally over time and I thought you were gone."
"So you have been together for a year, living as man and wife?"
Kate nodded miserably, "He saved me from being auctioned and used by the others."
"What do you want me to do... thank him?"
"No I just want to explain, he is a decent man Peter; he reminded me a lot of you!"
"Yeah well, he seemed to step right into my place and my bed."
"I am sorry; I would have never... not if I thought you were alive. I never stopped loving you, I thought you were dead. I don't think he would have either, he believed I was a widow."
"I heard rumours... that when the Germans were here women were more... free spirited and dressed differently."
"It wasn't like that, they had dresses and nylons from Paris; the styles were more revealing. Some women tried to maintain their position to increase their chances of survival. It wasn't like that for me; I lov... cared for Thomas."
"So it was full relationship, not something you felt obligated to do."
"No Peter, it was my choice, he never coerced me, he even talked about marriage."
"Maybe he should have done that before you got pregnant!?"
"He wanted to, it was me who put off, it still didn't feel completely right when people were still fighting."
"Tell me everything about him and what happened."
Kate recited her tale in detail for the next hour. Peter didn't interrupt much and nodded in understanding at key points. The story of Thomas being shot by his nephew Billy and then being released surprised Peter; he already knew about some of the Major's other actions.
There was no explosion of anger or big argument, Peter tried to let go of the rage, "We're alive Kate, many others aren't! Do you love him?"
Her look of horror confirmed what Peter already knew, Kate would not have gone with someone she didn't love.
"What if he could come back now, who would you choose: him or me?"
Kate hesitated; Peter stood quickly and left the room. Why hadn't she replied immediately, Peter was her husband and first true love?
Surprisingly Peter remained friendly, he moved into the spare room on the days where he wasn't away on army business. He looked after Kate and her new-born son. Kate stayed in their house as much as possible, and waited for her sister before risking a trip to the shops. The looks and comments were hard to deal with.
A few weeks later Peter approached her, "There is a function at the County Hall, I think you should come with me."
"Isn't that just asking for trouble?"
"We need to face up this and move on. Did you keep any of the dresses?"
"A couple of French satin ones, they were too good to throw away, I kept them in the attic, why?"
"I need to take you out dressed like that and show that you are still my wife and I am getting the full version of you."
"Ok, but am I Peter... I am really your wife?"
"It's important we show that you are, otherwise you and the boy's life will be a misery. Can you handle the stares and whispers?"
"The men will comment, the women are used to it and had their own similar outfits. I know they call me a slut but many of them did similar things or worse."

They attended the event; Kate was conscious of how tightly the dress fitted and its low sweetheart neckline showing more of her breasts than she was comfortable with. She was fuller figured since the birth of her son, and couldn't bend over to tug her hem line down without exposing more of her large breasts. The corset held her in but wasn't leaving much space for breathing.
The confrontation Peter was expecting didn't take long to materialise. "Your wife is dressed like the German whore she is!"
"Excellent, I was wondering who it would be and I am glad it is you rather than a man who actually served, care to step outside?"
The man blustered, "I did important Ministry work; anyway you can't be sticking up for her, she had his bastard."
"Ok then, I guess we'll do it here!"
Katherine tried to stop it, "Don't Peter, he's not worth it."
The loudmouth was a big guy but it wasn't much of a fight. There was a sudden flurry from Peter and the man had been put soundly on his arse, his nose and lip bleeding profusely.
Peter turned to address the room, "Anyone else got something to say? Understand this, Kate is my wife and I expect her to be treated with respect."
They stayed at the event but Kate could hardly contain her tears, "Why are you still with me Peter?"
"Do you wish Thomas was still here, is that it? Do you wish that I never came home?"
"No never, you being alive is the greatest gift! Do you think we can get back together, properly I mean, like a real couple? I do love you, so very much."
"But I am not the only one you love, am I?"
They left the venue and went home to separate rooms and separate beds. Their lives continued in a painful limbo, weeks turning into months with little change. Kate focused on looking after her son, at least the hate had died down after Peter's actions at the hall and her close friends and family remained steadfastly beside her.

Kate was surprised when Peter walked into the kitchen with a guest. It wasn't until he turned around that she saw who it was, surprise turned into being totally staggered.
"Oh my God Thomas, you're alive!"
It was like history repeating itself, her partner back from the dead. She had no idea how to act or what to say, her eyes jumping repeatedly form Thomas to Peter as the tears filled her eyes.
"Hello Katherine, it is good to see you. Peter told me I had a son!"
"Yes, yes of course, would you like to see him?"
She looked nervously at Peter as Thomas replied, "Very much."
Peter nodded consent before Kate led Thomas into the baby's room. He looked so intently at their sleeping son before he started crying. Katherine picked the baby up and passed him to Thomas. He was so tiny in Thomas' hands, but it was the big German Officer who looked absolutely petrified to hold him.
Kate told him about his habits and emerging personality until the baby became unsettled, "Sorry he needs a change and a feed."
They went back into the kitchen; Peter broke the awkward silence, "Right how's about a pint Thomas?"
"Are you serious... they will lynch me."!
"Maybe... I guess we will see how brave you are, Kate needs to sort the baby and recover from the shock I think, let's give her some time."
When they got to the bar, the landlord turned angrily, "I am not serving him!"
Peter replied calmly, "That's fine, I am buying for my guest."
The landlord muttered to himself but served them, the British Officer was a decorated war hero after all and had a threatening look about him, and the German... was just huge.
Thomas looked at Peter while sipping his first pint in what felt like years, "So it was you who saved me from the Russian gulags?
"As far as anyone is concerned, we needed your intelligence about the locality: minefields and munitions stores... that sort of thing."
"You don't need me for that, but I can't thank you enough, those camps are certain death, it is just a matter of when."
They started talking about their experiences in the war, suddenly a realisation hit Thomas, "You are him aren't you? The commander we were hunting down in the region."
"I guess I was."
"We never got near you, apart from that time I used myself as bait."
Peter smiled, "You were lucky that day, my men had you in their sights, but we didn't want to kill an officer who seemed to be fighting with integrity and protecting civilians. Then I got a strangest feeling, like the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end; so we quietly pulled out and attacked elsewhere."
"Your instincts were right and that was a wise decision, we had units tracking you down through the back of the forest. Your alternative attack was devastating... I lost a lot of friends."
Peter nodded, "We all did!"
Thomas neglected to add that it was that day's horrific events that led him to Katherine's bed.
Peter continued, "Well if that day had gone differently and one of us had died, we could've avoided our current predicament. You fought like a soldier, no reprisals on civilians, I wish your colleagues had been as honourable."
"We thought we could starve you out!"
"We stole a lot of our food from your own supply lines and the Canadians supplied us through Iceland and the western isles. I got pretty sick of eating red deer mind."
They sat in silence for a while, before Thomas spoke, "I am sorry, I thought she was a widow and couldn't resist her. I tried; I knew it would cause her conflict with the locals. It was my fault, don't blame Katherine... I instigated it."
"That's not quite the way she tells it, she made her own decisions and she loves you. Your also her hero, you saved her and I have to thank you for that at least and for Billy."
"But she is your wife, regardless of my feelings!"
"And he is your son, regardless of mine!"
Just then Peter looked up, "Oh here we go, you have a welcoming committee."
The loudmouth from the hall was back, this time with friends... five of them. It was evident they were already drunk and angry.
"We're not drinking with him in this pub. "
"He's a fellow soldier drinking with me and I don't recall inviting you to join us, so why don't you piss off, there's a good fellow."
They stood unmoving but the power of speech or much thought seem to evade them, Peter persisted, "You do realised he protected the village if not the whole region, elsewhere locals were put in internment camps."
"He's a dirty no good Nazi, they're all the same and should be hung."
Peter turned to Thomas smiling casually, "Yeah there is no arguing with stupid, come on let's get this over with, we can be on the same side for a change."
They walked out into the pub yard, the six men circling around, unsure about what to do and reluctant to attack.
Peter charismatic smile returned, "Don't be shy boys!"
That comment set things in motions, two of the biggest men stepping forward and swinging wildly. If Peter was a blur of speed, Thomas seemed to swat men away easily. He actually caught the first punch thrown and his counter sent the man reeling. The fight such as it was ended in seconds, with the six would be assailants strewn across the yard.
Peter started helping some of them up, "Get some ice on it lad and you'll be ok, no hard feelings."
The six gradually made it to their feet and stumbled away.
Thomas looked at Peter, "You like fighting."
Peter shrugged, "I am good at it, so are you; come on we'll get you back."
***
Kate could see the evidence of the fight and frowned at both men. At Peter's requests she prepared a spare room for Thomas and left him there before returning to the kitchen, to see Peter sipping a whisky.
"Why did you bring him here and what was the pub about?"
"It seemed the right thing to do and I was establishing what his intentions were. He loves you and your son, given the option he would marry you and look after you both. So it seems you have a choice. I can help you both find a place, the continent someplace or America maybe."
Thomas hadn't been as explicit with his words, but Peter felt what he was saying was true, he was certain Thomas was in love with Kate.
"Don't you want me Peter?"
Peter didn't answer and started moving off to his own room, "You should speak to him tomorrow."

They strolled along the quiet riverside path, Katherine pushing the oversized silver cross pram.
Thomas stopped and looked at her, "I love you Katherine and we have child together, he is such a precious gift after the war. Peter has offered to set us up and I am begging you to take that option. We could start again... have the big family we dreamed about and live in peace. I want to marry you Katherine and have a life together... anywhere you like. Please say yes!"
Katherine thought it sounded like heaven after the torture of the previous few years. Could she find sanctuary and have a life away from the comments and sneers. She was realising that a life in the village for her son would be torturous, she had to protect him from that.
"I need to speak to Peter; I am not sure what to do."
Kate approached Peter that night. "You were right, Thomas wants us to go away with him, he offered to marry me."
"I figured he would!"
Kate waited for a few moments, "If you can't love me anymore, I will go with him."
Peter nodded without showing any emotion, it was what he expected.
Then Kate continued, "But that is not what I want, I want you!
I want that young couple we were before the war. I want you Peter, I don't know how you'd be able to bring up another man's child but I won't give him up. If there is any way you could you could cope with that and what I have done... I want to be your wife... if you will have me!"
Peter stopped and turned to look at her, "Are you certain?"
Kate's tears poured down he cheeks, "Absolutely certain, why did you really bring him here?"
"I wanted to make give you the choice. I didn't want any uncertainty, regrets or him turning up later and then being destroyed all over again, just like when I came back."
"Destroyed really! You seemed so in control, as if the war had made you cold and immune to hurt."
"No I wasn't going to let you see that, you had to choose first! The idea of him in our bed with you for so long, and you acting as his wife was... was devastating."
"I choose you, I love you so much. I can't believe you'd still want me, protect me and look after me and little George, but if you are willing I will do everything in my power to make your happy."
They kissed for the first time in years, all the old feelings rushed back. It felt right, despite their emotions running wild: pain, fear, relief, they were all there.
They said goodbye to Thomas the next day at the railway station, "If either of you ever need anything from me, just say. I know you will be great parents to my so... to George. I wish you both the best of luck."
Peter looked at him, "When he is old enough I will tell him who his father is and that he is an honourable man. Good luck to you Thomas."
They shook hands, Thomas nodded at Kate and left.
Kate turned to her husband, "So what is next for us."
"We need to move I think, it will be best for George to have a new start. How do you feel about Australia?"
Epilogue:
Fifteen years later they were living in Sydney. It really was happily ever after. George ended up with two younger brothers and three sisters for good measure. Peter never treated any of them any different, and they told George the whole story together when he was 16. George was amazed by the tale and events in the war. Peter offered him the contact details for Thomas his father in Germany, explaining that he had a half brother and sister.
George rejected the details, "No need, I already have the best dad in he world."
Kate smiled, "And I have the best husband."
She made her choice all those years earlier, there was never any doubt it was the right one, every day together proved it. Peter agreed and felt Kate had delivered on her promise to make him happy.
