As an Estonian, Maia's natural tennis idol was Anett Kontaveit, and she was thrilled to no end to have Anett coach her at the Wimbledon tournament. Her next favorite tennis player happened to be Anna Kournikova, a Russian player. Now compatible with her generation of Estonians, Maia did not harbor a full-fledged animosity nor hatred towards Russians or Russia itself. Most importantly, Maia was born long after Estonia had broken away from the Soviet Union in 1991, to restore its sovereignty which was first established in 1920. Consequently, Maia had no first hand knowledge nor awareness of the times when Estonia was not a sovereign nation but instead was subject to the brutal rule that the Soviet Union had imposed on the Estonian territory since WWII until 1991.

Maia was aware that the reason she was born in the United States was partly due to the fact that her maternal great grandparents had fled Estonia during WWII because of their pro German sympathies in the war and thus harbored legitimate fear of the fatal consequences awaiting them upon Russian recapture of Estonian territory. However, since this had occurred long before she was born, such fact held no real substance to her consciousness which in turn precluded her from developing an animosity towards Russians. As a result, Maia was able to admire Anna Kournikova without feeling any guilt in doing so. In truth, Ms Kournikova was an average professional tennis player. There are and were a plethora of Russian players having had more successful professional tennis careers. In fact, Anna Kournikova never even won one WTA tournament throughout her career, although her CHR (career highest ranking) did reach at No 8. Despite those arguably meager results, she was very well known and celebrated in the tennis world. That fame could be solely attributed to her pulchritude. There's no denying that if she had not been so easy on the eyes, she would not have gained the notoriety she did attain. As it is, the memory of Anna Kournikova's tennis presence has endured in the minds of tennis fans, whereas most of the tennis players of her generation had been forgotten.

Maia was not vain nor conceited regarding her physical beauty. Nevertheless, she was cognizant of her super good looks. Besides most of her acquaintances would periodically remind her of it or comment on it during normal everyday conversation. That being the case Maia could relate to Ms Kournikova. As already stated, Maia idolized Anett Kontaveit, who without a doubt was the most successful Estonian tennis player to date. Anett's CHR was No 2 which included six WTA tournament victories. After her own miserable results in competing this past March in the "sunshine double" tournaments in the United States, coupled with her relative meager showing at Wimbledon, excluding of course, that exciting victory over Gertrude Stockmann, Maia realized that she would not come close to equaling Anett's career results should she pursue playing full time in the WTA tour events.

Maia was a very competitive person; she exalted in winning and was despondent when losing. In this light, she was aware of the career of an American player named Madison Brengle who experienced a very odd career trajectory. After starting her professional career with three undistinguished years, Ms. Brengle competed in 24 consecutive grand slam tournaments (six years in total) by playing in the qualifying rounds. On each such occasion, she failed to win the three consecutive matches needed to gain entry into the main draw of the slam tournament. Finally, at the United States Open, since she had enjoyed reasonably success in that particular year, albeit not reaching the Top 100 for automatic entry, that tournament granted her a wild card entry to the main draw. Thereafter, she was able to maintain her rankings in the Top 100 throughout the ensuing years. Consequently, she automatically gained entry into the main draw for the subsequent 35 successive grand slam tournaments, and competed in each and every one of them marking nine years of total main draw competition in each of the four grand slams.

However, after the last thirty-sixth consecutive slam appearance in the main draw, Ms Brengle dropped out of the Top 100 before the next ensuing scheduled slam. Therefore, in order to continue her streak of appearing uninterrupted in the main draw of grand slams thirty-six times, she would have had to compete in the qualifying rounds. Considering her previous lack of success in such endeavors Madison Brengle decided to hang up her racquet.

A summary of the respective career totals of these three players were as follows: Anett Kontaveit, career of 12 years, CHR-No 2, 67% winning percentage of matches competed, 6 WTA titles and $8.2 million prize money won. Anna Kournikova, career of 8 years, CHR-No 8, 70.0% winning percentage of matches competed, 0 WTA titles, and $3.6 million prize money won. Madison Brengle, career of 18 years, CHR- No 35, 57% winning percentage of matches competed, 0 WTA titles (but 2 lower level titles), and $4.8 million prize money won.

In Maia's estimation, she knew she was not in Anett's caliber of tennis proficiency; more likely possibly in Ms Brengle's skill level, but even at that it was perhaps dubious. That then is the realistic reason why she opted to go to college instead of trying her luck on the WTA tour. However, Anna Kournikova's career did intrigue Maia's sensibility. She believed herself to be just as comely as the Russian, if not more so. Add to the fact that she is the perceived daughter of the Estonian Prime Minister, would certainly attract more attention to her, than most of the average run-the-mill compeers in professional women's tennis. The fact that Ms Kournikova's career was so abbreviated especially compared to that of Madison Brengle inspired Maia to contemplate an alternative life goal when she completed her studies at the University of Tartu.

To this end, as already stated she maintained her ITF membership. There were at least three ITF tournaments, one in Tallinn, and the other two in Finland and in Sweden during the upcoming year which she intended to participate in. For that reason, she decided to keep training once a week at the tennis club in Tartu to ensure that she would at least be competitive at the lowest level of professional tennis. In the back of her mind, she wanted to keep alive the possibility that she could go toe to toe with the best players in women's tennis. She believed that her winning the Junior Girls title at Wimbledon two years previously and her victory over Gertrude Stockmann, the past summer, tended to induce receiving concessions of entry into tournaments that might otherwise be denied to her.

After Maia had finished with her tennis session, she would grab a bite to eat before returning home; this time period being the one time Hans and Riina were left to fend for themselves as far as eating was concerned. Then during the Saturday afternoon, Maia diligently put in three hours of solid academic study before devoting the remainder of the weekend for leisure. With the discipline for academic effort she had established for herself, it paid dividends for Maia as like in high school, she was first in grades amongst the first year computer studies students.

Maia's serious attitude towards her education had rubbed off on Riina. The latter spent just as much time on school work as Maia. Consequently, Riina also was a good student achieving excellent grades and ranked amongst the top students in the History department.
