Lee and Arabella find themselves whisked into the last year written in the magic book, the year 1999. They land in Manhattan New York City. It is December the holiday season. Lee J is now in the identity of Ethan Wright an NYPD police officer who is working security during the upcoming New Years holiday. Arabella's new identity is that of Liz Shaw a high powered executive in a mergers and acquisitions firm in Lower Manhattan. She enjoys her powerful position and her beauty which attracts many lovers. She is mean and snooty to her humble but sexy blonde secretary, Chrissie, from Queens and of lower social standing. Chrissie is kicked out of her boyfriend's apartment and to earn more money takes up residence with her boss Liz while also serving as her personal assistant. During an errand run for Liz, Chrissie is mugged and thrown on to the street about to be raped but Ethan (Lee J) saves her and arrests the mugger. Grateful for the heroic deed, Chrissie agrees to go out with Ethan on a date. They go on a horse drawn carriage ride in Central Park. They have sex at Ethan's apartment. Time is ticking and both Lee and Arabella realize that this time finding the book is even more urgent. If they let the time pass, and they get to New Years Eve, they will cease to exist. That is the furthest extent in the timeline in the book. The people of New York are afraid of Y2K, the Millennium, the year 2000, as it approaches, believing that the computer based industries and infrastructures all over the world will not be able to read the year 2000 and the subsequent decade, and would revert to the year 1900, causing panic and a technical failure meltdown in a massive scale. Arabella, at night, begins a ritual to empower herself so that she could control all computers and the internet, so that she could rule the world as the only salvation as she could change all data in computer calendars to read 2000 and beyond. Chrissie has been eavesdropping on her boss' chanting and rituals and she tells this to Ethan. Lee J now knows that Chrissie's boss is Arabella. He tells Chrissie that he comes from the future, the year 2025, and that if they don't kill Arabella, the witch in the guise of Liz Shaw, she will rule the world. Chrissie allows him to enter Liz's townhouse at night and together they confront her in her bedroom. Then the book magically appears out on the ledge of the balcony. While fighting over it again, trying to get into a 'safe' past time, the book suck in Lee, Arabella and also Chrissie. All 3 of them are traveling back in time.
