Once in a Blue Moon

Chapter One

Haven was a small village at the foot of an unclimbable and very tall lone standing mountain. In centuries past this had been a busy and celebrated village, but that was not so any longer. Fables were still told about how gods resided on the mountain and made it their home. Life was peaceful and mostly good; fields weren't as bountiful and plenty as they had been in ages past. People got by but no one really prospered.

Valien had served gods, kings and country for years, and his body showed this. He had been one of the best, one of the noblest, one of the bravest. Now he was scarred, battle-worn and almost crippled by the toll life had taken upon him. He walked with a limp, and most of his body bore scars, most noticeable was burns on much of his body. His face had burns too and the searing of the skin of his face had also damaged his eyes, so his sight wasn't good.

He lived secluded from the village and wasn't welcomed but accepted. He kept to himself and mostly got by on his own. He would fish in the river close to the mountain, at the bottom of the falls that the mountain was famous for, long ago. He had lived at the village for a few Summers and a few Winters. Winters were hard here, and for many it could be hard to get by. Valien would share what little he had, when he knew of families that were starving. He might leave firewood at the doorstep, or a big fish or two. He never let it be known it was him; he needed no acknowledgement; it was just who he was.Once in a Blue Moon фото

Not all fables are just fables, some are facts. And in the springs that fed the river and the waterfalls of the mountain, every start of Spring, Nymphs, Sylphs, Dryads and all lovely free-natured spirits would come to bathe, and to enjoy the coming of the sunny seasons. When nature started to flourish, and as was often said by humans, 'When Love is in the Air'.

Nymphs were beings of love, they were so pure and beautiful that a kiss from one would make a man be ensnared for life, and few men less than a demigod could look upon the beauty of a nymph in her naked form. Even gods were drawn to them.

Cassiopeia was one of the nymphs that had come here for centuries. Not that looking at her would make you think that she looked like a young woman barely into her adolescence but with eyes that showed wisdom... and love.

Unlike her sisters, she loved the night sky most of all, when the moon was out. She would be alone when she bathed in the springs and ponds, at the Spring Equinox, and she would bathe in all her beauty, lucky that no mortals were around to see her.

This particular evening, something was indeed in the air, and as she moved around, she lightly hummed to herself watching fireflies, and other nightlife waking up. But then fate would have it, she tripped, slipped and fell, and hit her head down on a rock. And she fell into darkness.

In the dark of night her limp, beautiful and very naked body slowly drifted with the current and slowly but surely entered the stream that grew, became the river, and the waterfalls. Nothing in nature would hurt a nymph, so she drifted safely and as she moved down river, fell with one waterfall and the next, no rock or so would hurt her body, she reached all the way to the base of the mountain, with not a single scratch. How could she have been knocked out by the rock... well, Fate would have it.

Fate wasn't done, this night of a beautiful full moon, had found Valien restless for once and he had gone out to fish. He was shocked when he felt his net make what seemed like a heavy catch. But his shock didn't lessen when he discovered that he had caught what seemed like a naked female form. He had been around dead many times, and this form didn't feel like a corpse that had been washed up, no she felt warm to the touch. He picked her up and carried her to the bank of the river and took off his cloak and wrapped her naked form in it. He tried to no avail to wake her, and he saw no other course than to carry her home.

He had a simple cottage, with only the most essential, which included one bed, so obviously this was for the unconscious young lady. He wasn't the kind of man to take advantage but even his scarred and callous hands could feel the softness and perfection of the curves of this woman, that he carried for a few miles.

He let her rest, saw no reason to force her into waking up, leaving her body to decide on its own. He had taken the cloak off her and had covered her with a blanket. He watched over her in silence. He didn't see well, but he could make out her shape well enough, to see where she was laying. He usually wouldn't bother with a candle or lamp, since he didn't see well enough to worry about details. But it was like there was a light emanating from her that made her stand out more clearly than anything he was used to looking at.

Cassiopeia woke up with a start, and a smile. She always woke up with a smile. But she started to think, and she realized she didn't know where she was, she didn't know who she was, she didn't know why she was smiling but she was clearly happy. She looked over at a form sitting unmoving in a chair. Valien had fallen asleep, he was no longer young, and he had carried this delicate creature a long distance in the middle of the night. So, before dawn, he had drifted off to sleep and wasn't awake to see these beautiful eyes opening with the coming of the sun.

Cassiopeia pulled the blanket off her body and saw her nakedness. She looked over at the form that was lightly snoring and saw the first man she had ever seen in person. She had heard stories of them, but at this point she didn't remember, she just saw a man and knew she had never seen one like him. He was so handsome, even his snoring was attractive to her, he looked like all a woman could wish for. Cassiopeia didn't look with the eyes of a mortal, she didn't see only skin deep, she was looking at the soul. She didn't know that this was the case, she just saw this handsome man, who had the purest soul. But some things were so wrought into her mind that she knew that a man, wasn't supposed to look at her like this. She found an old tunic in the cabin as she moved around. Her movement was as silent as the passing of a shadow, and she didn't even think about it. The tunic was old, worn and already years ago, would be said to have seen better days. But Cassiopeia would make any queen feel underdressed and ashamed if they stood next to her.

Cassiopeia was used to Ambrosia, the nectar of the gods to eat. She wasn't hungry, but she felt something in the pit of her stomach, as she looked at the man, and she thought it was that she was hungry. She gently gave the man a few pushes and tugs, and the woke up sitting up straight but smiling. She loved his smiled, she had never seen a man smile before, but this was amazing. She smiled back at Valien, who closed his eyes, like he had woken up in the dark and pulled the shade to the side to look right at the sun. What a smile, he could see it, was all he thought.

"Can I have some breakfast?" said a voice so melodious and wonderful, that his worn tired heart started beating with a strength that reminded him of how it had felt when going into combat.

"Yes, milady" he just got up and like a soldier he stood at attention in respect before moving around. He heard the giggled of clearly a young woman, and he heard her saying.

"I am not a lady, I am..." and then she paused as if she didn't know who she was. Like out of a fog something resonated in her mind. "... I am Cassie... I think" she giggled and nodded.

Valien found some fruits and berries, then started making tea. He moved around efficiently with slow deliberate moves. He felt her eyes on him constantly, at first it made him uneasy but very quickly it brought him peace. Every time he looked in her direction, even his dimmed sight let him see a bright smile looking at him.

He proceeded to tell Cassie how he had found her and brought her to his cottage. She nodded and followed his words, like she was listening to a story at the fireplace.

"So, I don't live here normally, which is why I couldn't find some of my clothes?" she just smiled and then added "I hope it is alright that I borrowed this, or do you want it back?" and she was already half in the process of undressing when Valien interjected that she was very welcome to anything that was his.

"You are a very kind man, the kindest man I ever met" she said not really considering how this did say much, since she didn't remember having met a man before. But she could sense that her words made Valien happy.

She got her mug of tea and a bowl of fruits and berries. The tea was as hot as it could be and Valien didn't think of telling her that it was hot, assuming that she could see and feel this, as well as anyone knowing tea was served hot. Also, he had waited for the kettle to make the water boil.

Cassie drank the tea with great enthusiasm "This taste wonderful" she said having emptied her mug in big gulps before Valien had had time to blow on his tea long enough for his first sip. He sat dumbfounded a moment before refilling the mug she had extended in her hand, as she wanted more. She waited for the tea and used it to eat from her bowl. She didn't eat much, this was not new to her, but wasn't really Ambrosia, not that she thought exactly that, but her tastebuds weren't amazed. It wasn't that the tea was special, it was just new to her.

Valien ate his own breakfast, but it took time, because Cassie seemed to have an endless line of questions. And to Valien it felt like the more questions he answered, the more things Cassie wanted to know about. Valien had always been a very private person, telling little about his life to only a few, but before breakfast was over, Valien had said more about himself and his life to her than he had said to everyone in his life combined.

He finally excused himself and started clearing off the bowls and mugs, going outside to wash things off. Cassie followed him and observed everything with the greatest interest, asking new questions. Valien tried again to excuse himself for this and that chore, but Cassie was like his shadow. She did sense that Valien appreciated silence, and she would just remain quiet and watch him, everything he did, was fantastic, no man was like him.

Chapter Two

Valien came to love the company, and he felt like he was coming more and more alive as days became weeks. He knew enough to try to avoid the people of the village, especially for them to see him with a young woman around. He did manage to keep her entertained with some fun activities, like brooming the cottage, or cultivating vegetables in the garden. He went to the tailor in the village and had a simple dress made for Cassie. He didn't think to how it might be rumored that he bought a dress, and this would lead to people assuming there was a woman with him.

He would take Cassie hiking, fishing or just for walks to gather herbs, berries, mushrooms and all the things nature had to offer. Cassie loved it all. She would walk around barefoot and after longer trips, Valien assuming the young woman would have sore feet, would offer to carry her. Cassie would usually blush red and accept, and even his poor sight allowed him to see that it embarrassed her to say yes. Only he never realized that Cassie had no need to be spared walking, she was an enchanted being that never would tire, never could get sick. But she loved the feeling of being in his arms, she could do this all day. She could feel that it would tax Valien's strength but as it did, she could feel the resolve in him, that he would never sit her down, never give up, he would carry her to the end of the world and back. She felt so special.

As the warm Summer was upon them thunderstorms arrived and Valien living so near the mountain was worried if this would scare Cassie. Cassie could sense it and especially sense the protective feelings in Valien, and knew how much it meant to him, to keep her safe. She would insist she sleep in his arms, on stormy nights.

At times Valien could be very tense, his heart beating stronger than usual. He would be so careful around her, she didn't get why. At these times he was very hesitant to accept keeping her consoled and safe, not joining her in her bed. Since the first night, the bed had been hers, and he would sleep in the chair or on a couple of pelts and blankets on the floor.

Of course, luck would have it that a shepherd walked up on them when they were out, a young lad that saw Cassie and he was helplessly spellbound by her beauty. He said nothing and just stood there until they had passed, and only long after did he carry on. He told his friends in the village about the beautiful woman he had seen. All thinking he was lying, but he insisted. Saying how the beautiful woman had been with the old, scarred hermit. And then there was one that had heard the rumor about the dress that the hermit had bought.

Some of these young boys had big brothers that were way more interested in the idea of a young beautiful woman. Young women were interesting enough and too few of them around, but a very beautiful one even more so.

A handful of young men came to the hut the following evening, clearly, they had been drinking wine and were very loud. Cassie got very excited, she had just seen her second man a couple of days ago, and here was the sound of more. She had not been impressed with this second man; he was just a pale little shadow of Valien. She had sensed Valien's unease with the other man there, and she had thought it was just something, competitive. But here wasn't really any competition, Valien was everything, the other man was barely something.

Valien opened the door and went outside. He had a walking stick that he hadn't used after he found Cassie, but he used it and limped outside.

"Let us see her", "We want to see her" was all the sorts of things the men outside yelled and shouted. Valien knew enough not to try to forbid Cassie anything, but decided to let her do as she saw fit. She came outside, smiling because she didn't really know how not to smile. One of the young men was a little bright and nice to look at, but the rest were pale, except for the loudest of them, he was ugly to look at, so dark, she didn't like how it made her feel.

The men took the cue from the loud one and the started to make a semi-circle around the doorway. Making Cassie get confused because suddenly she had to turn this way and that, to look and to listen to what each was saying. The ugly one used this to reach out for her to grab her but there was a simple thud, and he yelped. The walking stick had hit him over his knuckles and hit the hand aside.

"Time for you to leave, thank you for dropping by" Valien said and the one he had just hit one hand off, used his other to reach for a knife but another thud sounded, and a howl of pain. The walking stick had hit this hand as well, and as the fist was caught between the metal hilt of the knife and the hard wood bearing down, his hand was bruised if not broken.

"Thank you again, no need to come back" Valien insisted, and the men got silent and moved off, but after a but cursing could be heard.

Cassie ran into the arms of Valien and kissed his face all over. She had not really noticed the men when things had started to escalate. She had seen Valien, how his beautiful brightness had started to shine, and it was like the whole area of the cottage had been lit up. Cassie of course didn't know that this wasn't anything the rest of them could see, it was just her immortal eyes.

That evening and night, Valien insisted on sleeping on the floor. In the middle of the night, Cassie did have to come to him, cuddling into his embrace, so his arms held her naked form under the shared blanket.

She always slept so well, but this was the first time sleeping on the floor, maybe that is how Valien managed to get up without her waking up. He used the opportunity to get undressed and wash himself fully, at the well behind his cottage. He knew his body had more scars than could be counted and the burns worst of all. He couldn't understand why Cassie was so affectionate with him, but he could feel it was genuine. He loved her more and more day by day, making it harder, because he wasn't the man she deserved. He looked down at his body and for the first time in his life, he regretted the sacrifices he had made that had led to this. He knew he really didn't regret it, but it was the first time he had considered how life might have been, if he hadn't been broken like this.

He didn't hear Cassie, he never did. But she was looking at him, saw him there naked in all his glory. And her, not seeing the skin, but only what was beneath, saw perfection, and she felt her entire body and soul, responding to the man before her. Like she knew her purpose in this world, it was to be the women, and Valien to be the man. She started making tea and breakfast, because where she had seen only glory, she could feel that Valien loved her so much that he felt that wasn't enough, that Cassie deserved more. Cassie blushed, thinking to herself," I cannot be loved too much, can I?"

After this morning life was harder for Valien, he didn't know why, he could just feel it. But he had fully aroused a nymph and put her in a mood to breed. She was now waiting to be fertile, which was something nymphs knew when it happened instinctively. The pheromones that came from Cassie affected everything around them. The vegetables grew at an incredible rate, and when they went to collect berries and fruits, everything just seemed more plentiful.

Wildlife from all around the nearest mile or so seemed drawn to the area. When they went for walks or fishing, they would spot all sorts of animals and creatures that for some reason were out. When they went fishing, it was done in a few minutes, instead of waiting with nets for hours. It was like fish came up or down the river and jumped at the nets.

But for Valien, the pheromones were like his heart was ever pounding, pumping fast with excitement, and he couldn't stop thinking about Cassie. She was his every thought, awake or asleep.

It wasn't more than a few days after the visit of the young men, that there was another visit by even more men. The young ugly man, as Cassie thought of him, had indeed got his right had broken but his story to his father that he couldn't help now, wasn't that he had tried to grab a woman against her will, but was that the old hermit and assaulted him, and his friends were the witnesses. They dared not speak against their friend.

They had timed it too, having had a couple of boys watch the cottage and wait for one of those times when Valien, the hermit, left on his own.

Cassie came outside when she could hear numerous voices, and close to ten men were there, most young but a few adults. One of the younger men was somewhat bright and Cassie smiled at him instinctively. But the ugly one was there, and his just as ugly father was there too. A few of the rest weren't nice to look at, but most were just pale, nondescript. Cassie missed Valien, for the first time, she really felt the need for his presence. She didn't really know that she was in no danger, but all the men here were closing in on a very deadly drop.

"She is the reason the hermit, broke my hand unprovoked" the ugly one yelled and pointed. A couple of men moved toward Cassie and grabbed her, taking a wrist each. She did nothing to stop them, nothing to fight them, she just watched, curious about what was happening. It was like when Valien had described to her how he had found her, not like it was her story but more like she was excited and curious to see what would happen next.

All the men moved in, except for the bright one, he stood what seemed paralyzed in the background, he was carrying a bow. He seemed like he was watching events that he had no way of influencing.

"She sure is a pretty thing" the father said, and chuckled as he reached out to feel the very perfect curves of the young woman. "Maybe she can give you compensation for your broken hand... and maybe me for having a useless son for weeks" he chuckled loudly.

Cassie heard the tearing of fabric before she felt it. But she looked down at the dress Valien had given her, the most precious gift she had received, and said fabric tearing apart. She didn't worry about the fact that her ample breasts were now exposed, she felt no reason to cover herself.

But seeing her breasts, put the men in a frenzy, like they had to see more, and they started to tear more at her dress. One thing has always been timeless, 'Too many cooks spoil the broth', this is also applicable when more people try to tear at the same dress of a woman.

"STOP" Valien commanded in a tone so clear that all present, even Cassie was shocked, and sure that everyone in the village would hear it too. He stood there calmly leaning on his walking stick, surrounded by numerous men, all with a weapon of sort. Clubs, knives, and a sword. And of course, in the background, the young man with the short bow.

Cassie was almost naked, but lucky for the men there, her rags covered some of her still. She did nothing to cover up but just smiled feeling safe instantly when she saw the light in the darkness, which was Valien. He stood there calmly, like a single torch surrounded by the darkest night, but with a confidence like he knew he would win.

After freezing a moment, the men started to move again, they let go of Cassie but prepared to surround Valien. Valien made a single gesture of a circular motion with his empty hand, from his left side and moving the hand up over his head and down to his right side. There was a flash of light, at least that is what Cassie saw, she had to blink her eyes a few times before she could see fully. To the men, there was no light, but they had all felt a pulse... a repulsion. Most of them started to throw up, sickened suddenly from their drinking or what they didn't know. Those that didn't throw up but made moves to raise their weapons, he lunged at quickly and with great proficiency, disarming three and never being attacked before it was over.

The men started to retreat, when a loud sound could be heard. The bright young man that Cassie had smiled at, the one with the short bow, he didn't mean to but amid all the confusion, he let loose his arrow, and since arriving he always had been aiming at the only person there at the time, at Cassie.

Valien stepped forward and sighed as the arrow sank into his flesh. He just looked at his beautiful house guest and then turned to the men and commanded in a tone that no one would dare disobey.

"Begone, begone" and he gave a gesture that showed he meant this. He looked toward the young man with the short bow and shook his head and looked down a moment. The young man dropped his bow, and he never had the heart to pick up another for the rest of his life.

The men hurried away leaving whatever weapons they had dropped on the ground. Cassie saw Valien with the arrow in his chest, stumbling toward the doorway, and she quickly helped him inside and onto her bed. If only either of them had known, that no man-made weapon could harm Cassie, then neither would have been in trouble. Had they succeeded in ripping her dress off, they would all have died, none of them able to gaze on a nymph in all her beauty.

Chapter Three

The rags that had been her precious dress. Nothing fancy, a rather simple and common dress, but it was Cassie's most loved item. It fell off her and she moved around completely naked. Even with his bad sight and barely having open eyes, the cabin seemed lit to Valien. He felt Cassie's gentle hands undressing him, bringing water and bathing him. He felt so ashamed, her seeing his scared and broken body. But never had a man felt hands tending to him with such love and affection. He heard a gasp when she had pulled his trousers off. He was in pain, he was hurting but his body responded, he couldn't stop it. He didn't know that gods would barely stand a chance to resist the effects of a nymph in this state.

She sat down over him, straddling his thighs and started to pour water over herself as she leaned forward. The water that came off her had healing properties. At first, she did it, so the water splashed over the place where the arrow was stuck in his chest. He took her hand and guided it to the chest, and he aided her in pulling it out, he gasped and sighed in pain, and fresh blood oozed from the wound, but the arrow was out. She splashed more water over herself and slowly at first but visibly she could see the wound closing. She didn't see the other effect, as she kept pouring water over herself and it spilled over Valien's scarred body. All his burns, all his scars started to disappear. It was like when you clean something very dirty, some spots are faster to get clean, others take more scrubbing but slowly all of it healed. Cassie didn't see the scars, but it was like she was shining silver and as she did, the more she did it, the shinier the silver got.

Cassie did something her entire body told her she needed. She had never seen a man before Valien, so therefore she had never been with a man. But she saw him as a man should be before his woman, and she took him into her hand, and as Valien was still hurting from the wound, she mounted herself and felt so complete, as Valien and her became one.

Finally, the healing had spread to Valien completely, and as the last thing his eyes healed and he could see Cassie, the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She looked at him with eyes that were deeper blue than the ocean and seemed to look into his soul.

She gently moved on top of him, enjoying the immense pleasure it was for her, to be one with this man, the only man that was on this earth that was meant for her. Fate had been kind, to let her find him.

Valien looked down over himself and saw how his body showed no signs of burns or scars, he looked and felt like when he had been a young Paladin, in service of his god and the king of the realm. He reached out and let his hands roam her, like he wanted to be sure she wasn't a dream.

She took his hands and kissed them both, placed them on her chest, near her heart, so she knew he knew her heart was his. She moved slowly, taking her time, she didn't know how or why, she just knew she needed all that Valien had to give.

She could feel a storm building inside herself, she could feel how her body was starting to clench at Valien, pulling from him, taking from him, what she needed. She needed it all.

"I love you, Cassie" Valien spoke from his heart and as he said it, Cassie could feel it, how he was giving her his love, all his love, along with his seed, his virile seed was entering her very fertile and needy body.

As Cassie could feel Valien bringing a new life into being inside her, she suddenly remembered everything.

"I love you, I am Cassiopeia, I love you so much, I will love you forever" she said it, feeling life being planted inside her, as she looked at the man she loved, and saw his life leaving his now perfect body.

She bent down and kissed his lips, taking his last breath into her lungs, and kissing him on and on, as tears of love ran down her cheeks and covered his beautiful face.

She stood up after a while, feeling how all the gifts of love that Valien had given her had been absorbed into her, and her nature let her know that she was now carrying the daughter of Valien, and herself. Only true love can father a baby in a nymph, regardless of how fertile she is.

She kissed Valien again and walked outside. She was completely naked like when Valien had found her. She walked to the river and smiled as she focused, and the magic of the river spirits came to her. She turned and looked towards the cottage in the distance and saw a bright light descending from the Heavens. An angelic being came down to bring home the soul of this noble man. Leaving the perfect body behind, in the poor cottage of the lonely hermit.

A pillar of flames came down from the heavens and incinerated the cottage leaving no trace of it ever having been there. A rain fell over the village and valley that lasted the rest of the night, and for decades the village and valley saw bountiful fields and plenty of everything. Life was prosperous.

An oak sprouted from the ground where the cabin had stood and slowly grew ever taller over the centuries.

For centuries when the full moon of Spring equinox was shining in the sky, no men would see it, but Cassiopeia would bring her daughter Nereyda to the tree and talk about the love she had shared with her father. A nymph when born, is as beautiful and as pure, as the love that gave them life, and Nereyda was beautiful even amongst nymphs. Cassiopeia named her after the name of water nymphs, since it was water that had brought her to Valien, and water that had healed him.
