Adam had a rather varied relationship with religion. His early years had been spent deeply rooted in his family's church. They had attended events at least four times a week. His father had been an elder, his mother had been the worship team leader. He spent his weekends going to apologetics conferences and spiritual retreats.

For most of those years, Adam fully accepted the direction he had been put in. He memorized hundreds of bible verses well enough to win competitions, he took studious notes during every sermon, and he knew every theological argument inside and out. And he did all that eagerly, happily volunteering at every opportunity and cheerfully participating in every event he could.

His fervor and zeal didn't last forever however, and by the time he graduated high school he had a growing unease about some aspects of the church. His parents blamed it on letting Adam go to public school, and they desperately begged him not to go off to college. But Adam did attend university, and he found himself separating more and more from the lifestyle he had grown up in.

Adam didn't abandon his views entirely though. He still considered himself religious, and still believed the core teachings. But he viewed all the organizations surrounding religion with skepticism. Instead, he sought out places and people that actually exhibited some of the values he had been taught to revere, both secular and religious ones. Those all tended to be much smaller in scope, power, and size, but they felt more earnest to Adam. This however brought the enmity of his parents, who viewed this as a betrayal.

Along with finding his own path rather quickly in regards to his spiritual journey, Adam completed his undergraduate degree at a blistering pace. He went on towards a graduate program, and finished with a stellar performance at the age of 23. He felt eager and confident to begin his life, and started to search for research jobs in his chosen field. He found a job rather quickly, and it was everything he could have hoped for. He was going to work with the brightest minds, striving to create solutions to issues that actually mattered. Adam felt like everything was going perfectly.

But then funding was cut, his research was cancelled, and Adam found himself without a job and with almost no hope of getting a new one. Nearly every research team was getting grants cancelled and entire programs were being shuttered. With the future so uncertain, no one was willing to hire anyone. In what felt like an instant, Adam's dream life had become a nightmare.

With the weight of his student loans heavy on his back, Adam knew he couldn't afford rent in the city where he currently lived. He considered moving back in with his parents, but they had basically excommunicated him when he had chosen to go to college. His siblings chose to follow their parents' example, and all of his family on his mother's side did likewise. He was forced to ask the only other family he had left.

His father's brother, his wife, and their children had always been the black sheep of the family. They weren't shunned or cut off, but there was always a heavy air of suspicion around them. No one ever visited them, and they were only occasionally invited to family events. Adam had never known why. His uncle, aunt, and cousins had been just as visibly religious as everyone else, and there never were any major arguments when they were around. But still, there was something unspoken that caused the rest of the family to keep their distance. So it was with trepidation that he reached out for assistance from them.

When they eagerly accepted to take him in, Adam didn't know whether to be relieved or concerned. His uncle and aunt hadn't even asked why he needed help, but had just happily told him to move right in. Their unrestrained enthusiasm was slightly disconcerting, but Adam didn't have any other option. Within a month of losing his job, he had moved in with them.

The move wasn't easy at all. There was of course the usual trials and tribulations of going somewhere new. Adam had grown used to big cities, and now he was living in a small rural town again. He was removed from his old friends, and learning the local area and local customs took some time. It was the local customs that provided Adam the biggest challenge. He thought he understood small towns, having grown up in one, but the town of Stuls was something completely unique.

Just like some other small towns, Stuls was completely dominated by its biggest church. But what was a little odd was that there were no other churches at all. Every single person in town was a member of Stuls Covenant Church, without exemption. As far as Adam could tell there was no official mandate or anything that enforced this, but there wasn't anyone in town that wasn't part of the church. Because of this, Stuls Covenant Church held more power than any office of the local government, and it ran the whole county in all but name.

This situation seemed exactly the setting of a horror story involving a cult, but Adam quickly discovered that Stuls Covenant Church was a far more benevolent ruler than any other church would be in this situation. Along with there being no official rule that everyone in the area had to attend the church, there was little actual social pressure to do so. Adam didn't attend the first few weeks, and he still felt completely received by the local populace. And he learned that a few farmers who lived outside of town weren't members, and they were happily accepted in the community. Most local farmers and people living outside of town still did attend, but the few exceptions weren't ostracized or shunned as far as Adam could tell.

After a few weeks, Adam did start attending. He did so partly out of curiosity, and partly out of a feeling of obligation to his uncle and aunt after they had so openly accepted him into their home. When he did start attending, Adam learned that Stuls Covenant Church was a church of strikingly odd contradictions.

In some regards, Stuls Covenant Church seemed the most cult-like conservative church he had ever known. The authority of the church leaders was absolute, and they basically controlled whatever aspect of the lives of their members they wanted to. Homeschooling was done by every family, and the one public school in town sat empty and abandoned. Fast food restaurants and other businesses determined to be unhealthy for church members were banned from the town. Extensive use of technology was heavily discouraged, and there weren't even any cellphone towers in the county.

In other aspects, Stuls Covenant Church was the most relaxed and liberal religious organization Adam had seen. Yoga and mediation were key tenets of people's faith, and they were practiced frequently both in groups and alone. Tattoos, piercings, and other body modifications like hair dye were openly accepted and often celebrated. Alcohol was not only permitted, but it was a central part of many informal church gatherings. While homeschooling seemed mandatory, youths were highly encouraged to go to public college, and were generously supported if they did. Stuls was also an incredibly diverse town, with every ethnic group Adam could name. No culture was made more important or made to feel inferior, and services were translated into more than a dozen languages, with some sermons even preached in languages other than English. Women were allowed to hold positions of authority, and several were placed very highly in the church hierarchy. The head pastor was, in fact, currently a woman.

Politics was an almost taboo subject, with no mention of any party, policy, or even political scandal ever made. The church wanted its members to focus on each other first and foremost. Love, for one's self and each other, was nearly always the topic of sermons. Possessions were openly shared, with no one hoarding any wealth. None of the church was very wealthy, especially not its leaders, but they made sure no one ever went through hardship without the full support of the entire community. That made it feel like everyone had a great deal more wealth than their bank accounts might make it seem.

More important to Adam was how the church chose to treat its new and former members. People who left the church were not shunned or exiled, even if all had left the town at this point in time. Former members were still talked about fondly, and some visited often. New members were treated kindly, but not lovebombed, and were allowed to slowly acclimate to the rules of the church. The only thing that was demanded immediately was complete respect towards the church leaders. Occasional disobedience was tolerated, but willful disrespect was never displayed.

What surprised him most was the dress code. Around town, Adam had seen a wide range of clothing choices. People wore everything from the most modern and flashy fashion to the most conservative and concealing clothing. Adam himself generally wore an approximation of business casual, but before his first service he was told he needed to wear his finest suit. At the service he discovered that every single person wore their most expensive, but also most concealing clothes. Men had to wear jackets and could never wear shorts. Women wore floor length heavy dresses and even had to wear hair coverings. And on top of that, men and women were also separated. The two genders were split into different sections, with a wide aisle in between them.

This puzzled Adam greatly, since he hadn't seen this sort of behavior displayed at all in public. Men and women mixed freely, and he had seen some fairly prominent women of the church wear quite revealing clothes on occasion. The answer to this contradiction was that the conservative clothing was only required during formal services, and was not enforced at any other time. People were allowed to wear whatever they wanted, even at the church. Most people changed out of the restrictive clothing quite quickly, and Adam even saw the tightest pair of yoga pants he had ever seen on of the younger elders who happened to be a woman during a potluck directly after one service.

All of this left Adam baffled and constantly surprised. He never knew what to think about the church and its members. His confusion was only increased when he joined a bible study. The bible study he joined was one designated for young adults who were new, and not yet full members. The church occasionally got new attenders, either from the surrounding area or someone who had moved in like Adam. Gaining full membership to the church was a two year process for adults. Currently the group numbered four, three young adult non members and the group's leader.

The leader was Eve, the head pastor's daughter. Eve was mostly the ideal daughter of a church leader. She had intense passion and zeal for everything the church stood for. She wanted to do all that she could to further its goals, doing whatever it took. She trained hard, studied relentlessly, and gave the ministry her complete devotion. Eve thought that her church's theology was the best around, and in fact she thought it was actual perfection. Her belief was that their doctrine was utterly pure, devoid of any mistake. And that belief extended to making all that followed their doctrine perfect as well, free from any sin or taint.

For all of the fervor and dedication Eve had, she was lacking in just one thing, confidence in herself. Eve's biggest fears were being proven a fraud and shown to be lacking in anything. Her tireless efforts to increase her knowledge in theology and ability in ministry was all about making sure she never would be in a situation where she said the wrong thing or was proven to be mistaken.

Her intense drive for success gave her some skill in theology, but what it did more was make her ego fragile. She dreaded being wrong so much that when she had made a mistake, she would try and twist the facts to support her. Eve never allowed herself to outright lie, at least not knowingly, but she did occasionally teach some light heresy in order to cover up when she misspoke.

Eve was just 18, and she was extremely new to doing any actual teaching. Her only role where she provided theological instruction was in the young adult non member bible study. And Eve was extraordinarily lucky that most of her bible study were young and immature enough in their faith that they never noticed when Eve taught something less than completely correct.

One of the members was Delilah. Delilah had come to Stuls in a similar manner to Adam, having no where else to go and finding refuge in the home of distant family. Her early life had been rough, living in a remote area of Colombia. She had been taken from that life when an American missionary had come to her village. She had found faith from him, but he had found something more in her. Despite being more than three times her age, the missionary had married her and taken her with him back to the States. He had given her a new name and completely changed her life, indoctrinating her into his own flavor of religion. After a short honeymoon period, the man had tired of his wife, and had gone off to some other remote spot in the world to find a new one. Delilah had been alone in a foreign land at the tender age of 20. Fortunately, Delilah had found out that some distant cousins of hers had immigrated to Stuls some years ago, and they quickly invited her to live with them.

Delilah had always been a shy girl with a meek soul, but her traumatic experiences had made her even more reserved and quiet. She rarely spoke, and never disagreed with anything anyone else said. Delilah thought herself unworthy to even be treated as kindly as she was in Stuls, and she considered her lack of education something sorrowful and unchangeable. She listened to Eve's teachings with intense focus, but barely ever added any comment or gave a question. And though she rarely showed it, she was in awe of how passionate and determined Eve was. Delilah was even more in awe of the outgoing nature and relaxed self-assurance of the third member of their bible study.

Lilith hadn't come to Stuls similarly to Adam and Delilah at all. In fact, her life story was by far the most unique in the whole town. Leaving home at a very young age, she had drifted from place to place, seeing the whole word. She had experienced new and exciting things at every location she visited, and she often stayed a little while when she found an interesting spot. During this journey, she had joined actual cults, political fringe groups, isolated communes, nomadic wanderers, and every other type of small extreme community. She had been all across North America and Europe, and she had done it all before coming to Stuls at the age of 19.

Somehow, Lilith's experience with each of the groups she participated in had been extremely positive. She had deeply enjoyed each and every one, and had almost always fully committed herself to whatever cause or system they championed. Although her stays with some groups had been quite short, she was always an ardent believer during her stay in whatever was being taught. And soon when she had drifted into Stuls she had fully given herself over to their teachings, letting herself be an empty vessel to be filled by their message.

The church had provided her a small home, freely allowing her to stay there as long as it took for her to either get settled and find a way to provide for herself, or to choose to leave for a new adventure. Lilith participated as much as she could in the church, soaking in their teachings and doctrine. She followed every rule, and placed herself under the complete authority of the church leaders without any hesitation or reservation. This included Eve during their bible studies together. Lilith listened and obeyed everything Eve said without pause or hesitation.

With Lilith being so carefree and open minded, and Delilah being too subservient to even think about questioning authority, Eve had been enjoying her complete command over the bible study. But when Adam joined, Eve's authority was shaken. He never openly undermined her, or even strongly questioned her ideas, but he had more than enough biblical knowledge to know when she was either completely wrong or just trying to cover up her mistakes.

Adam wasn't trying to be openly rebellious, and he usually didn't want to see Eve fail, but something about her made him test her quite often. He found her assertive confidence to be haughty arrogance, and he enjoyed seeing her squirm while trying to maintain her sense of infallibility. He'd poke and prod at her statements, making her second guess before doubling down. He never fully disagreed, but he liked making her go further and further down a line of reasoning while trying to avoid being proven wrong. This led to Eve making some truly wild claims all in an effort to avoid admitting any mistake.

One such case happened on a late spring afternoon, during their Monday bible study session at Lilith's house. The normal discussion had ended, and Eve had opened the floor to questions. Delilah was too shy to ask anything, and Adam was too distracted. Lilith was in more relaxed clothes since it was her home, but the way her shorts barely covered anything and the tightness of her tiny tube top made Adam wonder how he never heard anyone from the church preach about modesty. He had a hard time focusing on much besides how much of her pale skin Lilith was showing.

Lilith however was eager to ask questions, since she always wanted to deepen her knowledge about her current group's ideology. Her question this day was about alcohol, and why there was absolutely no limit on it in town. Most of her previous groups had censured it in some manner. Delilah had also been curious about this, since she had been taught that any amount of drinking was a sin, but she had never been brave enough to ask.

"Well, it is clear from the texts that alcohol was a part of the life of nearly everyone in the bible. Noah made wine shortly after the ark finished its voyage and Jesus supplied drinks for a wedding. There seems to be nothing inherently wrong with alcohol." Eve stated.

Eve's answer seemed to satisfy Delilah, and Adam just shrugged his shoulders. He would have answered something similar if he had been asked the question. Lilith however still looked unconvinced, and had some unresolved issues.

"Yeah, that makes sense. But it also says that drunkenness is bad. And I've seen plenty of church members get blind drunk. In fact, I've gotten pretty drunk a few times with some of the women as well." Lilith confessed.

This question perplexed Eve immediately. She knew that the bible did indeed label drunkenness as a sin, and she also knew that many townsfolks did get quite inebriated sometimes. Evening church gatherings had plenty of booze available, and it wasn't uncommon for some members to need to be hauled off in a stupor.

Eve could have simply decried the examples of heavy intoxication as sin, but that would mean labelling church members as sinners. One thing about Eve's world view was that she would never believe that any people following her church's ideals could be sinning. Their doctrine was perfect, and therefore they were perfect. Drunkenness both being practiced in the church and being a sin was a contradiction that Eve could not tolerate, and she could not let her bible study members begin to believe such a thing. So she rushed to give an explanation.

"It might seem like the verses talking about drinking in excess apply to us, but a careful reading would show that the message is aimed towards a different context. We, those that attend Stuls Covenant Church, have been granted a more perfect spirit, and therefore any evils that accompany drinking can not plague us. It's because... Well, uh..." Eve said stammering, and a frantic panic started to glow in her eyes before a sudden idea popped into her head.

"It's because we live in the same state as in the Garden of Eden. Some rules are for those in less perfect states and that still need sanctification." Eve declared, grinning with satisfaction that she had found a decent enough answer.

Her words were spoken in a stumbling rush, her eagerness to eliminate the seeming contradiction causing her to make the fastest logical connections she could. Her faltering words lacked any sense of structure, but they were still spoken with such intense conviction that it seemed like Eve truly believed them. And she actually did. Once Eve said something, no matter how flimsy the logic was or how rushed the idea was put together, she did make it a foundation of her personal theology.

Delilah also quickly believed the claim that they were just as sinless and blameless as in the Garden of Eden. Eve was their leader, and her authority was absolute, so there was no questioning it. It also gave Delilah some quiet hope that she might not be as ruined and tarnished by her past as she thought. Lilith also happily accepted the claim. She didn't know enough about theology to truly question it, and it gave her a good enough reason for the moment.

Adam however had to hide a smirk and suppress a mocking chuckle at Eve's ridiculous idea. He knew a thousand different theological reasons why her claim was completely wrong, some of them very simple. But instead of bringing up even one, he thought of a more fun way to challenge Eve. Countering her claim was easy, but more enjoyable was forcing Eve to make more ridiculous claims to support this one.

"Is that so? As blameless and innocent as in the Garden of Eden?" He asked, feigning curiosity and wonder.

"Well, if that's so, why do we need to wear clothes? The weather is perfect here most of the year, especially now. If the whole town is as sinless as you say, shouldn't we be able to be nude whenever we want?" He asked, a mischievous hint to his voice.

"Apart from formal church service, of course." He quickly added, making an allowance for that odd rule.

Adam grinned a little deviously, sure that he had laid a perfect trap for Eve. He was certain that she wouldn't just agree that being nude was perfectly fine for both her and him. The Stuls Covenant Church was very odd, and Eve had definitely proclaimed some wild additions to their doctrine, but that was just a step too far. And she couldn't just retract her statement, it was something she would never let herself do.

To his delight Adam quickly saw Eve's brow furrow and a look of frustration pass over her face. Her eyes narrowed, and she looked to be focusing hard. He could tell that the wheels in her mind were spinning fast trying to figure out what to say in response. Whatever progress that she made in formulating her plan was ruined when Lilith added her thoughts.

"Yeah, if we are like the original Adam and Eve in the Garden, why can't we be nude all the time? I mean, it feels awesome to be naked all day." Lilith said with a grin that let everyone know that she had done so frequently in the past.

"And besides, aren't we all God's creation? And shouldn't we display the beauty of his creation? If we are so perfect like you say Eve, then there wouldn't be any threat of sinful lust. We can avoid the temptation just like we avoid the bad effects of drunkenness." Lilith suggested, smiling and looking quite proud of herself for that line of reasoning.

Eve looked surprised that Lilith had not only agreed with Adam's idea, but she had reinforced it. She felt devastated that another line of logic had been added that she needed to counter. Her stomach tightened and dread started to flow through her veins as she attempted to find a way out of this. She couldn't retract her statement about being sinless and perfect, and she didn't have the skill or knowledge to argue against what Adam and Lilith had suggested. She felt trapped, surrounded, near to facing failure for the first real time in her life. What made it all even worse was the way her group was looking at her with skepticism. Even the mild and meek Delilah was looking unsure of how Eve could prove herself right.

That fear of failure, and being finally found out as a fraud, made Eve reckless. Since she couldn't find a way out of the trap that had been laid for her, she did the only other thing she could. She was always willing to do whatever it took to maintain her image as faultless and infallible. Gritting her teeth, Eve summoned her immense resolve and committed herself to doubling down.

"Well of course that's correct. This is absolutely no reason we shouldn't be nude all the time." Eve declared.

She spoke with all the same assurance and conviction as always, or perhaps even a bit more. Adam was a little shocked by how forcefully she had declared this, and he was more surprised by the wild look in her eyes than the fact she had just said being naked was perfectly fine. And the crazy energy in her only grew more alive, and he quickly realized that she wasn't going to stop at just this statement. Eve needed to secure herself, prove to everyone there that she wasn't just talking out of her ass.

"And since it is perfectly fine to be nude, and it displays the beauty of God's creation, I hereby announce that our next bible study will be done with us all naked. We are living as if we are in the Garden of Eden, and we will do our best to replicate those conditions." Eve proclaimed with a fiery assurance.

Adam was stunned beyond belief by this added declaration. It was something so baffling that he couldn't comprehend it at the moment. His confusion and shock only continued to grow as it became clear that Eve's words weren't something she had said without meaning to commit to them. She and Lilith quickly started to plan the logistics of the idea, picking a place that suited the needs well and would create the right atmosphere. They couldn't just do it in someone's home, since that would look nothing like the Garden of Eden, so they needed to find a suitable outdoor location.

Lilith had been immediately delighted by the idea. Nudism was something she had practised in the past, and it was something she greatly enjoyed. Learning that it was going to be incorporated into her current system of beliefs was a joy to her, and she eagerly assisted Eve in the planning. Lilith had no problem with how wild the idea was, since it was hardly the strangest thing she had done in her life.

Delilah was nearly as stunned by Adam by all that was happening. She had been sitting in a cozy recliner, and once Eve had stated that they would need to go nude at their next gathering she retreated into a huddled ball. She hid in her oversized sweatpants and large hoodie, barely even peeking out. Her fears were too strong to allow her to voice any of them, and her complete submission to authority didn't let her complain as well. Though she was terrified of what was going to happen, she had already surrendered herself to the inevitability of it.

The meeting ended with all the plans made, and neither Delilah nor Adam had spoken a word during the planning. Eve took Delilah to her home, and Adam left still feeling like he was walking in a terrifying dream. Even when he got home he wasn't able to start processing what had happened. His crafty plan to poke fun at Eve had gone way too far, and now he didn't know if he could live with the consequences of it. Fear and worries consumed him anytime he tried to think of what might happen during the next bible study. He couldn't even imagine getting naked in front of those girls, and the idea made him want to flee the town.

The bible study meets three times a week, so the next meeting was on Wednesday morning. By that time Adam still hadn't fully come to grips with everything. Part of him wanted to try and think of the whole thing as some bad dream, a false memory, but several text reminders from Eve about the new location made that impossible to fully consider. Unable to ignore what had happened, Adam instead chose to believe that this was all a bluff from Eve. She had bitten off more than she could chew, and she wouldn't actually go through with it. This pleased Adam, and it would mean he'd finally get to see her humbled a bit and have to acknowledge she was wrong. As he drove to the location he was feeling more and more eager instead of frightened.

The location Eve and Lilith had chosen was basically perfect for their purpose. It was a field that had been set aside by a local farmer generations ago for use by the church for picnics and such, and over many years it had been cultivated into a veritable paradise. Adam had been there several times, and he had been in awe every single moment he had visited.

High hedges surrounded it, hiding it from the outside and making it seem like a world all on its own. The soft grass was always carefully and meticulously maintained. Flowers of every color, hue, scent, and pattern made the area look like a living rainbow. Fruit trees were scattered throughout the space, and they along with berry bushes provided fresh fruit whenever it was in season. Even now cherries were starting to ripen as the peaches grew fat. A magnificent small lake with several water features was always crystal clear and serene. It was already heaven on earth, and Adam agreed that it was well suited to host an attempt at recreating Eden.

But as he pulled up, Adam was seriously doubting that any real attempt would be made. He was quite certain that Eve would chicken out of doing anything like she had proposed, so he didn't have to worry about his fears of needing to follow her example. When he saw that the girls' cars were already parked near the location, he walked straight in through the gate in the tall hedge wall.

The three girls had already arrived about ten minutes before Adam. Delilah had ridden with Eve, and Lilith had just happened to follow directly behind. The three had entered together, and then had chosen to head towards the lake. None of them had spoken a word, but all felt a growing tension rise up around them.

Delilah was as shy as could be, hugging her arms around herself and looking like she wanted to hide in one of the nearest bushes. Her anxiety was clear and obvious, even though she kept her eyes down on the ground. Lilith was the complete opposite, basically skipping with joy as she smiled bright and cheerfully. She radiated eager confidence and excitement. Eve was a simmering stew of frustrated confusion. Even though she walked with conviction, it was easily seen that she had grown unsure of the plan she had created. The tension reached an unbearable level as the three stopped at the lake's edge.

"Well, can we just start stripping right here? I'm dying to get naked already and enjoy some of this wonderful sun on my skin." Lilith asked, stretching out her arms and smiling nearly as bright as the sun.

Lilith's free spirited and casual attitude towards getting nude annoyed Eve, who wished she could have the easy assurance of the other girl. It had a greater effect on Delilah, who grew even more nervous. Her fears and worries had built up to such a point that she did the unthinkable, actually saying them out loud.

"Do we... uh, well... Eve, do we really have to do this? Is it a good idea, is it even okay to do?" Delilah questioned, her voice haltering and barely loud enough to be heard.

Though her words were softly spoken, they cut powerfully straight to Eve's heart. She was stunned that Delilah had voiced her first words of concern, that she had given her first vocal sign of reluctance. More powerful than how stunned she felt was the rage that came with it being Eve's authority that was being questioned. In Eve's eyes, she felt incredibly weak to have been the cause of Delilah's first tentative rebellion. That weakness could not be tolerated, so Eve brushed aside every worry of her own and tapped into every ounce of willpower she had. She resolved to see this through, and not let anything stop her from being proven correct.

"We do have to do this. We must demonstrate that we can be blameless as the original Adam and Eve when they were in the Garden." Eve declared, and without a second thought she pulled off her dress.

The group hadn't decided where exactly to meet, and the garden was a large place, so it took Adam a little while to find the girls. As he wandered through the gorgeous scenery, he thought to himself how nervous and worried the girls must be. He thought that they were probably waiting for him to show up so that they could officially call the whole thing off. The picture he imagined caused him to grin, and he was chuckling as he finally reached the lakeside. He couldn't wait to see what sorry state those girls, and especially Eve, were in.
