Life Prep and Sex Education Pt. 01

Chapter 1

The school year at Nova Preparatory Academy just finished and almost everyone is off for the summer. After the end of the school year the Academy offers a special non-credit course for graduating seniors over 18 that I've been asked to teach. The course is called, "Life Prep and Sex Education". The purpose of the class is to offer a leg up to students who are heading off to college by focusing on increasing maturity through life skills that should help them in college and beyond. Nova always tries to give their students an edge. The course was offered last year for the first time, so this is the second year. Last year one of the more experienced teachers taught the class, but the thinking was that having a younger teacher this year, like myself, would be more relatable to the graduating student's situation and perhaps get them to be more active participants.

My name is Brock Hardigan. I'm 23 years old and just finished teaching my first year at Nova Preparatory Academy. Nova is an incredible school - very forward thinking and innovative. Another module is on automobiles. All the students already have their license, but few know much about automobile maintenance. We bring the students to a local garage where a mechanic shows them how to check their tire pressure, check the oil, use a jack to lift a car, and change a tire. Again, the students perform all these activities.

We do a few modules on finances. First, we bring in a bank manager who explains the different types of accounts -- checking, savings, CDs, etc. as well as introducing investment types of accounts. The banker also explains interest rates, and specifically the value of compound interest. The student exercise here is related to compound interest to show the value of early and continued savings. The second part of the finance module is done by an investment advisor. The advisor explains stocks and bonds and money market accounts, explains the stock market, dollar cost averaging, and shows the history of stock investments over time. The students explore investing using a Monte Carlo simulator to see how their selected investments might pan out over time.

These topics and a few others are covered in the first week of the class. The second week is focused on social interactions, i. e. dating, and finally sex education. While Marie and I facilitate the first week of lessons via topic experts, this second week's lessons are the ones that Marie and I are expected to teach.

While some 18-year-olds have had experience with dating, others have had little to none. Our lessons are targeting the little to none audience. We start off slow with lessons on having conversations with someone of the opposite sex. Next, we move on to how to ask someone out on a date and how to plan the date. We cover both how to accept and politely decline a date. While most of these kids have attended school dances already, they don't really know how to "slow dance", so we do a lesson on this.

Chapter 3

The final part of the class is on sex education. We've already taught sex education by the book in the school year. I did this in my health class. This sex education is going to the next level. How exactly do you have sex with someone. For inexperienced youth, this can be an incredible confidence booster, knowing what they are doing in advance rather than learning as you go.

For this lesson, we hire students from the local university -- one male and one female as our sexual models. The pay for this role is significant, so it is very desirable to these college students, but it does take a certain type to be willing to have sex in front of an audience. We ensure these hired students are not known to anyone in the class and they know what is expected.

We also switch things up with the student groupings. Up until now both classes were coed.
