"So? How was it?" Lana's phone buzzed incessantly from the group chat of her old friends. She appreciated their involvement in her life even though she had up and moved across the country at the will of her parents.
"Eventful, kind of." Lana texted back. "Met some guys. They're hot but both are a total mess."
"Howso?" They pressed. "Pics?"
"I don't have any pictures yet!" Lana continued. "But, I don't know. One of them has a girlfriend and she's super hot. The other one said he's single, but for some reason he seems... dangerous."
"Oooooh, spicy." The girls cooed from 3,000 miles away. Lana grinned and put her phone down to get ready for bed. She had a long week at school to look forward to.
The next several days at school went by uneventfully with some effort from Lana to keep it that way, but Wednesday rolled around quickly. Lana kept in mind her second cardinal rule: don't antagonize the cheerleaders. But how would she avoid that?
Her first thought, of course, was to just not go and say she forgot. But near the end of the day, Sabrina found her and enthusiastically informed her that she had already signed her up and personally recommended her to the coach, for some reason.
Lana's next thought was to purposefully bomb the tryouts, but some sense of pride left in her didn't want to look totally ungraceful in front of the entire cheerleading team. Plus, those signed up are committed to a multi-day tryout, and she didn't want to look stupid for several days. Instead, Lana decided that she'd do her best the first few days, then just bomb the final test tryout on Friday, and do her best to make it look like an accident.
The school day came and went, and Lana attended the tryouts. It was mostly freshmen girls, with a few girls of other years sprinkled in. They were huddled in groups, giggling and whispering as the football guys jogged out into the field, pointing at their favorites. The hushed whispers came to a peak as Jake jogged out, helmet off, shoulder pads on. Lana glanced at Sabrina, who seemed totally unfazed by the girls whispering. She must be confident about her relationship, Lana thought, remembering the way he leaned over her on Monday.
The cheerleading coach, Coach Sharon, came out to greet the tryouts.
"Hello girls," she commanded the girls effortlessly. They all lined up to hear her talk. "Welcome to the cheer tryouts, I'm stoked to see you all out here today. Here's a quick rundown of how this is going to work. Today, we're going to learn some of the basic cheers and go through the basics of what you'll need to know how to do for Friday. Tomorrow will be a free time, where you guys can practice on things that need work, run through the routine with other people, and ask questions. On Friday, we'll hold the actual tryouts in groups. Keep in mind that as long as I see a real effort and real enthusiasm, most of you will make it onto the cheer team, either on the A team or the backup B team."
Lana panicked. That's the kind of school this is? The type that accepts just about everyone?! It was even more mortifying and damaging to her pride to think about being a senior and then ending up on a backup B team. I should have just skipped the tryouts!
"Now, keep in mind that it's not easy to land in the A team," Coach Sharon continued, wagging a finger at the young girls. "We are a nationally ranked cheerleading team, and most people end up in either JV or the B team their first time through. However, there's always room for improvement, and when we deem you ready to move up, we'll do so."
None of this was comforting to Lana. Maybe I'll just stop showing up after today? She considered it.
"Some of the best cheerleaders in the world come from this school. Our cheer captain here," Coach Sharon motioned over to Sabrina, who was standing to her side. "Sabrina has been with the A team since her freshman year. You're all lucky to have her last year here as your cheer captain. Sabrina, take it away."
There was a gentle and polite applause as Sabrina stepped forward. She greeted the team, then ran through the basic cheers for the girls. It was a little embarrassing to do, but it quickly came to Lana. Before she knew it, she was actually having fun. The dances were easy enough, and some of the stunts, while intimidating, were actually enjoyable to do when pulled off correctly. Lana's strength as a sprinter came in handy.
By the end of the tryouts, Coach Sharon had her eye on her. "You're a new student, right?" She motioned for Lana to come over, which she obeyed. "You're the one that Sabrina recommended. Lana? Well, not to give too much, but I can let you know right now that you're a shoo-in for the A team. You could be at Sabrina's level, or better easily."
"Oh, thank you." Lana feigned a smile over her uncertainty.
"Have you ever done cheer before?"
"No, never."
Coach Sharon looked surprised. "Well, that's a shame. I would have loved to have you all four years."
The practice came and went, and Lana washed up and began her way home. Through the parking lot, she spotted a familiar curly-headed individual.
"Oh, Damien!" Lana waved at him, who waved back. "What are you still doing here? It's like 5pm."
"I had to do some extra curricular stuff," Damien explained. Lana looked at him curiously. It didn't seem like he was telling the whole truth. "You know, my grades aren't up to snuff, and college apps are due soon. Trying to get on some good sides last minute."
"Sure," Lana nodded. Damien was leaning on his car, though, as if he were waiting for somebody. "Are you... waiting for someone?"
"Ah," Damien seemed flustered. "No, not particularly. Did you just get out of that cheer thing?"
"Yeah. I don't know if I want to do it. That Sabrina girl told me I should."
Damien raised an eyebrow. "Sabrina? She asked you to do it?"
"Yeah..." Lana paused. "Weird, right?"
"She's basically famous for never wanting to share the limelight, so, yeah, out-of-this-world weird."
There was a brief, awkward pause.
"Did you want a ride home?" Damien asked.
Lana was taken by surprise. "Aren't you waiting for someone? I mean, I know you said you weren't, but..."
"I was just kinda thinking," Damien excused himself. "But seeing you snapped me out of it. Why don't we grab dinner, too?"
Lana couldn't suppress her blush this time. "You asking me on a date?"
"And if I am?" Damien leaned down to meet her eye level. "There's this cute diner on the edge of town I never get a chance to visit. Why don't we go?"
"I look and smell terrible," Lana laughed, motioning down to her workout clothes. She was in just a tight little sports bra and some compressive shorts that hugged her ass. Her midriff was totally exposed.
"You look and smell great," Damien said to her in a low voice, almost a whisper, and Lana's heart skipped a beat. "But, if you want, I have a shirt you can put on over." The tall black-haired man reached into his back seat and pulled out a band t-shirt, then handed it to Lana.
She took the shirt in her hands and unraveled it to reveal another band she loved. "You're lucky you have good taste," she teased as she donned the shirt, then hopped into the car.
