Masters of the Opera Ep. 9

Bianca Cavanaugh and her husband Bertrand Rose begin the process of their divorce. It is a dramatic and difficult one. Bianca is sleeping with her lawyer who demands that she take Bertrand for most of what he's got. Bianca and Bert quarrel over ownership of a mansion in Germany, outside of Bayreuth, where Bert built his own Bayreuth-style opera house. Bianca is singing Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung there. Meanwhile, Sakura is back at the Met singing the roles of Olympia and Antonia in Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffman under a different conductor. Bert travels to Germany to settle and finalize the divorce. As one final blow to her husband, Bianca, who has been sleeping in the mansion in dispute, at the same time as Bert is sleeping there in separate rooms, starts a fire to burn the house down to the ground. When Bert awakens during the night to see the house in flames, he realizes that Bianca has caused the fire. They fight in a physical altercation which has them suspended from a chandelier. The chandelier comes crashing down. They both run out of the burning house and watch it turn to ashes. The following few days, Bertrand, angry at his wife, plans to humiliate her in public by releasing the tape of her confession to kill him. He intends to do this after her final performance as Brunnhilde in Gotterdammerung. But at the end of the opera, when the pyrotechnics fail as the backdrop of Valhalla goes up in real flame, the fires spreads and the opera house catches fire. Everyone inside run out to save their lives. But Bianca, who as Brunnhilde, has immolated herself in the fire, is trapped under a trap door and cannot escape. When the fire department is called, the firemen find her dead. The opera house burns down to the ground. It is her final revenge against Bertrand. Bertrand survives the fire. He flies back to Boston to meet with Sakura. Now that his wife is dead, he's as good as divorced. Finally free, Bertrand marries Sakura in a beautiful cathedral wedding. They make love in their new property they bought to live in as a married couple, in New York City.
