Preemptive Strike Expanded

THE PREEMPTIVE STRIKE EXPANDED

PREAMBLE RAMBLE: The original was written very quickly. Sometimes you need to knock one out to keep the juices flowing. Many felt it could have been longer and they were right. My intention was to write a short story. This is an expanded version with hopefully more character development.

For those who are driven crazy over then and than. I double and triple checked and still probably missed one. I self edited because I didn't want to burden the nice gentleman who helps me out. I read every single comment. I took the criticism and made the needed edits that some people have suggested. They helped me with the things I missed and hopefully make the story better.

I hope you like the story.

Tom knew the time had come to pull the plug, This farce of a marriage had gone on long enough. He met Sara in their senior year of college at Gardner Webb, he was majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Business. Sara was a nursing student. GW was one of the smaller colleges in the region with only 3100 students. For a small school it has a great sports history which a lot of activities revolved around. There were always parties after a game. Being a Christian school there was no alcohol at the parties but they were still fun.Preemptive Strike Expanded фото

He did very well in his classes and was already being headhunted by several firms in the region before he graduated. He was hoping to find a good job in his hometown of Greenville. He met Sara after a basketball game when they had been separately invited to a party. Tom wasn't the party type but he was dragged along by his roommates. He focused on getting good grades since he was on scholarship. He's parents were pinning their hopes on his success and he didn't want to let them down. He would be the first Butts to graduate college. It would also set an example for his brother John and sister Millie.

He spotted Sara talking to a group of girls and was immediately smitten. She was 5 foot 4 inches tall and he guessed 140 pounds. Long brown hairs and found out later hazel eyes. He finally was able to make his way to her and start up a conversation. He found she was also a senior studying to be a nurse. She grew up in Hickory which is forty miles north of Greenville straight up 321. They hit it off pretty well. Conversation came easy for both of them. They spent the rest of the night talking and he walked her back to her dorm after the party. Before they separated he asked her for a date for next week which she accepted. That date led to many more, They both liked many of the same things. She was into Manga and science fiction movies. Neither of them were party people but had a small group of friends they would hang out with. After meeting each others parents over the holidays and Tom getting Sara's father permission he asked her to marry him. Of course she said yes and they married six months after they both graduated. Tom had secured a job with the City of Greenville in their IT Department. Sara got a job at Greenville Memorial until she got pregnant with Darren two years later.

While dating they had talked about their past, as well as hopes and dreams. Tom had been in one serious relationship with a girl named Melissa during his sophomore year. They broke up when she transferred to another school in Georgia. Both knew a long distance relationship wouldn't work and parted as friends.

Sara said she had dated a guy throughout high school into her junior year of college. He didn't go to GW but Davidson. She never really said why they broke up but Tom could tell Sara was really hurt by it. That was the only time she mentioned her ex-boyfriend Bill Castello. Though every now and then he would see her looking off into the nothingness, like she was thinking of days gone by. Occasionally he would ask her about that and she always responded for a smile saying she was thinking how happy she was to be his wife and the life they had together.

They had been married for nine years when it all went to hell. Sara had gone back to work at Greenville Memorial Hospital in the Neo-natal unit a year ago after Jody entered school. They had two great kids. Jody, six years old and Darren seven. After Jody was born Tom got a vasectomy since they both had agreed on having only two kids. Darren was Tom's mini-me in every way. Jody had him wrapped around her little finger.

Married life was pretty good for Tom. The kids were doing good. Had friends and were very social. They went on great vacations every year. That was until five months ago. Sara had started acting differently. She was working later than usual. Going into work earlier. Tom would have to pick up the kids more often. She seemed distant and at times distracted. Even lovemaking changed. Having kids cut back on sex from three to four times a week down to two or three. Now it was down to one day. When they did make love it became just sex with Sara appearing to go through the motions. When he tried to talk to her about it she blew him off saying she was stressed from work. Or it would go back to normal for a while than fall back into the new normal. It got to the point even his son Darren had asked why mommy was acting funny.

Tom wasn't normally a suspicious man, especially when it came to his wife. He never had a reason to distrust Sara. What man thinks his wife would do something to hurt him or their marriage? The turning point came when one of his co-workers had caught his wife cheating. It was a mess, he said it came out of the blue but looking back on it the signs were always there. It ticked off all the things Tom was going through. Change in work habits and lack of intimacy. Almost like she was outside the marriage. Tom decided to take preemptive measures.

Three weeks later he was ready to confront Sara. He wasn't a detective and couldn't afford to hire one so he did want he knew best. Use his degree for his benefit. Placing an app on her phone that forwarded all text, coming and going. He also put a GPS tracker on her car so he could follow where she went. It didn't take long for Tom to find out what he needed. The evidence was devastating. If it wasn't for the kids he would have felt he wasted nine years of his.

That Friday he got off work early, picked up the kids and took them to his parents house for the weekend. He was prepared when Sara would get home. It took a week to gather everything together. When she pulled up everything was on the table if he needed it.

Sara was surprised to see him home at the that time. They usually got home close to the same time. She could tell he had been home for a while. She asked about the kids. "They're at my parents house, Sara we need to have a serious talk." he said matter of factly.

She was shocked at the tone of his voice which bought on a worried expression she quickly tried to hide. "What's wrong Tom? What do we need to talk about?" He lead her to the kitchen table. She saw papers on the table face down.

After sitting down he started, "Sara, I want a divorce." Sara looked at him with her mouth open.

Getting her wits back, "Why, what, how come you want a divorce? I thought you were happy?"

"Sara, I love the family we built together but you know I dated Melissa before I met you right?' She nodded her heard wondering where this was going. 'Well she came back to town five months ago and we reconnected. It started slowly, We ran into each other at Harris Teeter one day and got together for coffee. We would have lunch once a week then finally dinner. We talked about our lives and what we were doing. She's been divorced for two years and has a daughter a year older than Jody. She just moved back to Greenville nine months ago. We've been physical for the last three months. I realize she's the one I was meant to be with. I'm sorry but after I divorce you we're getting married." He handed her a manila envelope that he pulled off the counter behind him.

Sara was stunned speechless. He was asking her for a divorce. She looked at the envelope sitting on the table like it was a snake ready to bite her. She never once realized the story he had told was actually her story.

Just then the doorbell rang. Sara jumped in surprise. "I think that's for you, I'll get it." Tom said almost running the the door. Sara was still in a daze when she heard Tom, "Bill, so glad to finally met you. Come on in, Sara is in the kitchen waiting for you.' he led an equally dazed Bill Castello into the kitchen. He knew he would be meeting Sara's husband but not like this. It threw him off his game. 'Your timing couldn't be any better Bill. Is it okay if I call you Bill. I mean we have so much in common lately, don't we Sara?" Turning to look at his wayward wife not giving either one time to get themselves together.

"What do you mean?" She asked

"Well dear wife, once we're divorced you can be with the love of your life old Bill here. That is what you wanted right? The divorce agreement is for split custody of the kids, two weeks with me and two with you and old Bill here. I hope you treat them like they are your own Bill.' giving him an evil look, then smiling 'If you don't you'll answer to me okay buddy?, 'No alimony since you're getting married to old Bill here. Since custody will be 50/50 there will be no child support. Congrats Bill, you got yourself a ready made family! Good news you get the house until Jody is 18 or in college, whatever comes first. You also get the mortgage. If you decide to sell it we split it 50/50. I'm pretty sure Darren is going to need braces in a little while and he wants to go to Space Camp this summer. That's $1800 for each of us. And Jody wants to take dance lessons. She will need your support."

They both sat there trying to catch up to what was going on. "I'm going now. The kids will be with me for the next two weeks then I'll bring them to you, okay Sara?" Sara was trying to understand what had happened in the last fifteen minutes. Her husband had asked her for a divorce, Her lover of the last five months was sitting in their kitchen. She was supposed to be the one asking for the divorce. She was supposed to get child support and alimony. Tommy was supposed to pay the mortgage. That's what Bill said would happen. This is all wrong. By the time she realized that Tom was at the door.

"I've already moved my stuff into my new apartment. Don't worry the mortgage is paid for this month, but next month is on you. I put all the utilities are in your name now. My new address is in the paperwork. Have a great life." And he was out the door.

Tom had found out Sara had been contacted by her Ex. Just like in his story except they ran into each other at Publix. She texted Bill, "When I saw you sparks flew like never before and I knew we should always be together" and they had been texting every since. She would leave home early to have breakfast together. The sex started two months ago and that was reason she would be late. He found out Bill had been more than a boyfriend. He was her fiance. They broke up not because he left school or found another girl. He went to jail for robbing a liquor store with a couple of friends while on vacation in Montana. He got out a year ago. She was planning on leaving him and the kids to be with the love of her life. Bill said he wasn't ready to be a father, especially to someone else's kids. She had finally broke down and said she would leave me and the kids.

He decided to beat her to it. He had been to an attorney and got the paperwork done. He talked to his parents about what was going on. When he talked her parents they were not happy at all. They never liked Bill. They said he was always in trouble and knew it was a matter of time before he got arrested. They were happy he was out of Sara's life and very disappointed to find out he was back. They whole heartedily supported Tom.

Sara tried to fight the terms of Tom's petition. She wanted alimony and child support. Since their income was pretty much even there was no alimony. And with the kids going between homes she didn't get child support either. The divorce went through on Tom's terms except for split custody. When Tom pointed out to the judge that a convicted felon was living in the house she gave Tom full custody.

Sara and Bill didn't last a year. Once the kids complained about the way he was treating them when they visited their mother. Tom and he had a serious talk that almost became physical. Eventually they stopped going to their mothers all together.

Bill's true nature finally came to the fore. He was arrested again for dealing drugs and went away for five years. Sara found herself all alone. Once her friends found out that she left Tom for another man they drifted away, especially the married ones. They felt she couldn't be trusted around their husbands. And when Bill was arrested her reputation took another hit. People figured if he was dealing she must have known even though she wasn't charged. She was able to keep her job but wasn't allowed around patients or drugs.

Tom is doing well. A city job doesn't pay as well as the private sector but he has more flexibility for the kids. Being a single father suited Tom. The kids adjusted very well. Darren did get to go to Space Camp and Jody is doing great in dance classes. He's still single and his friends and coworkers are always trying to fix him up. He's having a ball being a father and dating two or three times a month. Maybe one day he will try to find out whatever happened to Melissa.
