Chapter 5. Mindy in the Limelight

Mindy had to walk back home around 2:00 AM after leaving Meena's flat since she missed the last 211 bus which stopped running around midnight. The fog was heavy. She tried to stay on the footpath to be safe. She kept thinking about the past three days which have been hectic. She always recorded things in a journal. As she was walking she took her mobile phone out and tuned on the "Recorder" App and started speaking into it:

Thursday, 07 May: I met Jack Fisher at the Unshaven Kitty (UK). We fucked in the club basement. Afterwards I took him home (see Part 1 of the series)

She also worked in her laboratory fine tuning and optimising her formulations and preparing kits and information sheets for the show as well as her PowerPoint presentation for the audience.

The big day finally arrived. On Thursday, Malcolm Broadstreet, the club owner was kind enough to bring his van to transport Mindy's equipment and other items needed for her presentation and demonstration by mid-afternoon. She spent some time setting up her laptop, interfacing it with the odour-meter and printer, hooking up the projector and making sure that her PowerPoint presentation worked properly. By 4 PM, she was satisfied and looked at the list of participants: Moira Walker, Liz Featherstone, Laura Langford, Betty LaFleur, Maria Martinez, Shona MacDonald, Sioban O'Keefe, Nicola Spencer-Jacobs, Judy Pearson, Rhiannon Lloyd, Sandy Spencer, Lindsey Williams, Audra Applegate, Tiffany Thomas, Marcia Stone-Smith, Nadine Richie, Monique Sokombe, Nancy Chang, Mira Patel, and Kim Soo. Mindy said, "Good evening ladies. I am Mindy Carvel. Some of you probably have seen me working as a bartender in this club. I am glad that all 20 of you came. Tonight, Linda will be your bartender. I will make a presentation of a product I am developing with a working name "Gusset Queen." There was a flutter of laughter from the audience.

Let's call it "before" application of formula. Then you collect a sample from the same area of the body to which you applied my formula and run the analysis again. You get another odour spectrum corresponding to "after" application. Without getting too much into details of what these exact compounds are, let me show the results from the samples collected from my armpit, pussy and arse."

There was a gasp from the audience and Mindy replied quickly, "You don't mind my using those words, do you?"

Monique said, "I always used the phrase down there."

The audience now showed more interest.

Mindy continued, "Let me show you the results from my pussy - sorry P samples and then S samples. Mindy answered, "Good question. 1. Nadine had a question. She asked, "I noticed that in your P and S samples, I see that P1 and P3 are missing, and S2, S5 and S6 are also missing. Why?"

Tiffany asked, "I am still worried about AI. How can you be sure that as your odour-meter collects the data, my personal intimate data, some rogue AI agent does not hijack it via WiFi?"

Mindy answered calmly, "A valid concern. I see what you mean. The odour-meter is talking to the PC via an old fashioned RS232C serial interface and the PC is talking to the printer using an IEEE parallel interface, both of which are something from the last century and operate without any WiFi. The PC itself has no WiFi access since its disabled. Thus there are no concerns. Good question though. Do you have any other questions, concerns or comments?"

There were none. So Mindy continued, "What I wanted to do right now is to collect samples from each one of you. There is a consent form in each of your packets. It states clearly that only your ID number printed on the front of your folder will be used and not your name, age or ethnicity. If you sign and date the consent form then it gives me permission to analyse your samples. The result will be shared only with you and nobody else. Also in your packets you will find two clear plastic zipper bags one with a red band and one with a green band. They already have a sticker showing your ID number. Wash both your hands first with soap and water. First you decide which of your three body parts concerns you the most with respect to odour. Is it A (armpits), P (vagina) or S (arse)? Write one of the three letters in the box provided on the outside of the sample bags using the felt tip pen provided. Then, take one white sheet from the sanitized bag. There are two in it. This sheet that looks like tissue paper is the sample collector. If you opted for armpits (A) wipe the sheet once on your left pit and once on your right pit, fold the tissue into fourth and place it in the red banded bag and seal it. If you opted for P, use the sheet and make sure that you wipe your quim including the vagina, clit and pee-hole. If you are having a period now make sure that you wipe off any discharges including blood first thoroughly with a toilet paper in the loo before wiping with the sample collection sheet. If you opted for S sample, again make sure that your butthole doesn't have any residues on it. Wipe first with a toilet paper to ensue this before using the sample collection paper. Any actual poo or blood on the sample sheet can gunk up the sensitive and expensive machine. Are we clear on the procedure so far?"

Nicola asked, "Do you want us to collect the sample here in the open exposing my pussy to my neighbor?"

Mindy replied, "Oh, no. You can use the loo. If you are collecting samples from your pits and if you are not too shy you can go behind the screen on the stage and do the sample collection."

Then, using the second of the white sample collection sheets wipe your organ, then fold the sheet like before and secure and seal it in the green banded clear plastic bag. Make sure if you are doing your pits wipe both pits but use only one drop of the formula for both pits. Then bring both your sample collection bags - the red and green banded ones over to me for analysis. I'll give you 15 minutes for the sample collection process which will also be our break time. If you are done with the samples collection, you can help yourselves to the £1drink at the bar."

Sioban spoke in her thick Irish accent, "You are putting our samples in the same machine. What is to stop one sample from contaminating the next, what they call cross-contamination?"

Mindy answered, "Good question, Sioban. I put one sample at a time. After that sample is done, I remove it, then wipe the sample tray in the machine clean with alcohol, then close the door, turn the vacuum on for 5 seconds and then a helium purge for 10 seconds. This ensures that everything associated with a previous sample is gone and the box is now ready to receive the next sample."

Mindy said, "Just a reminder. Collect sample from one organ only, i. e., A, P or S both for "before" and "after" samples. Let the samples collections begin. If are done collecting, please bring both plastic bags to me and then you can go have a drink that Linda at the bar will serve you for £1. We will begin the analysis in 15 minutes. Thank you."

With that she turned her music box on. She played k. d. Lang's 1992 song "Constant craving" from the album Ingénue first, followed by Angélique Kidjo's "Adouma" with Carlos Santana on the electric guitar and "Smooth Operator" by Sade - all three singers representing solid and strong female personalities. I have all your names in an Excel sheet which is for my use only. Using a random number generator I will order your names and then call you one by one in the order in which the generator organized your names. I will show you your odour spectrum both before and after the formula application. I'll also give you a report summarising the peak odour causing compounds in your "before" sample as well the odour reduction factor as a result of applying my formula. Rhiannon sat next to Mindy who put on rubber gloves. She opened the door to the odour meter which was just 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm, much like a microwave oven. She took the stainless steel tray out, wet a tissue with isopropyl alcohol, wiped it clean, replaced the tray and closed the door. She started the five second vacuum cycle followed by the 10 second helium purge cycle. Now that the tray was deemed clean, she opened the door. Mindy opened the red banded plastic bag containing Rhiannon's sample which was marked P. Thus, one by one, all the participants' samples were analysed and reports given to each. This took about 55 minutes. It appeared that out of the 20, 10 opted to give an "A" sample, 8 preferred to give a "P" sample and two opted for an "S" sample.

Mindy summarized the findings, "Out of the 20 of you with diverse ethnicities and ages, all of you experienced a reduction in odour of your organ of choice. The highest reduction was 22.3, the average reduction was 16.1, and the lowest reduction was 10.5. The standard deviation for the reduction was 1.67. Good job!"

Laura asked, "So what happens next?"

Mindy said, "I will use aggregate data thus obtained along with previously collected data from my own organs and fill in patent applications for UK and EU. Meanwhile, you still have much of the 1 mL sample bottle I gave you free (actually included with your registration fee) left. Feel free to experiment with them and use them.
