Desperate Times Pt. 09

"Alright, Steve. Let's make a deal."

Jess's words lingered in an office reeking of sex, smoke, sweat and whiskey. Even as she felt Steve's cum going cold in her panties, she gripped Chris's hand and faced down her would-be conqueror.

The morning had been a whirlwind. The dream. Chris, late to work. Her angry breakup with him. Driving, then walking to Steve's Stacks on a cloud of ascension and despair. The gauntlet of Girls, welcoming her into the harem. Chris arriving too late to stop Steve from fucking her but just in time to witness it. Steve cumming inside her as she begged for it, as Chris visibly cracked, apparently the final act in their tragic saga. But then... she had found herself and refused to be conquered. She had stood up for Chris and forced Steve Rossi to say things that Steve Rossi never said.

"Stop. Red. I'll do anything. He can stay. Don't go, Jess."

And then, when she had turned the doorknob..."Please."

It was a small victory. Steve still held the levers of power. Chris and Jess had nowhere to go and less than a hundred dollars to their name. Chris was mentally shattered; Jess had been put through the emotional wringer until she stood atop a mental ruin of her personality.

But standing nevertheless.

Her words lingered, the words Steve had used every time he had extracted his terms from her, now returned in kind. "Let's make a deal."Desperate Times Pt. 09 Ρ„ΠΎΡ‚ΠΎ

"A deal," Steve grunted. The panic in his eyes receded as his mind returned to the familiar, safe, less emotionally vulnerable territory of negotiation. "Fine. I know deals."

He dropped into his chair and clasped his hands on the desk, where Jess could still see their combined juices soaking into the polished leather. "Okay, Red. Let's negotiate. Core assets first. What exactly am I buying?"

Jess and Chris met each other's gaze, both full of love, trust and resignation. The terms weren't going to be gentle. There were some things they couldn't escape. The struggle now was to claw out any concessions at all, to keep some semblance of their lives.

"Here's what you get," Jess said, turning her fierce green eyes back on Steve. "You get my body. I'll be your Girl. That's your core term, isn't it?"

Steve cocked his head in acknowledgement. "That, and..."

Jess waved a hand. She tried not to think about his sperm, deep inside her, searching for their target. "We'll get to that. I know what you want. You're not subtle, Steve."

"But here are my terms. Chris stays. You don't fire him. Not today, not next week, not if you get bored. Chris stays. You've gotten what you were after, you stop holding his employment over our heads. "

Steve opened his mouth to speak, but Jess held up her hand.

"Hold on. You restore our benefits. Health insurance. College tuition. The programs, the car, the lease, I know you had something to do with that. Call off all your little minions, especially that blonde weirdo of yours."

Steve snarled. "Lot of mouth for a girl who just took my load on my desk."

Jess snorted. "Lot of desk for a man who just begged me to stay." She saw the tiniest of flinches, those pupils tightening again.

Steve took another deep breath. "Benefits. Fine. My people. Fine. I'll make the calls." Each fine visibly cost him something. "Anything else?"

"Yeah, actually. Um..." Jess tried to find any wiggle room that Steve might use against them. She knew the way he worked by now. "Chris and I stay on the same shift. As much as possible. No separate hours so you can try and pull us apart."

His jaw worked. "Within reason. This is a business, not a dating service."

"Within reason, then."

"Done." Too fast, and he knew it. Steve looked at the framed photographs on the wall, clearly conscious of how much he was conceding.

"Another thing," Jess continued, before she lost her nerve. "Two nights a week that are ours. We don't exist to you. No calls, no texts, those two nights are for me and Chris."

Steve's fists tightened. "Hell no," he growled. "If you're my Girl, that's it. I don't share custody."

"Two nights. Wednesday and Saturday."

"One night. Friday. Julie's gonna throw a fit if you're not around on Trivia Night and I don't want to deal with that."

"Julie's your problem, but I happen to like Trivia Night. Fine. Tuesday and Saturday."

Steve was silent for a moment. "Deal," he said, looking almost impressed. Jess saw the obsession shining in his eyes again. Steve's infatuation was a lever of her power over him, but she also felt the heat of his desire. It made her skin crawl; it also made her core clench around the memory of his cock.

Steve saw it. A leer crept across his face. "Don't get too high and mighty, Red. You wanted my cock. We both know it. Your boy knows it too. You don't get to pretend otherwise."

"I'm not," Jess said, her own throat working. "I... did. I do. I..." She shook her head. "Nope. You're doing that shit again. We're not done."

Steve snorted. "Fine. I have a term of my own." He pointed a thick finger at Chris.

"Once a week, he watches me fuck you. Just like today. In this office, in your apartment, at my house, wherever is convenient. He has to watch. That's my price for keeping him around. Tara's husband knows the deal, Chris is going to know it too."

Jess opened her mouth to reply, but Chris beat her to it. "Done."

Steve blinked. He had just threatened Chris with perpetual cuckoldry, and the kid had accepted it without a thought.

Jess looked at her boyfriend, her heart hammering against her ribs. She saw the shame, but also the dark hunger in his brown eyes. His fetish had found its outlet in their ensnarement; the angst had always been the fear of losing Jess completely. If he could watch Jess with another man, and still have her come home to him every day... the eroticism could exist without the fear.

She faced Chris, grabbed his hips, and pressed her own against him, gently, enough to feel his hardness. A heavy heat coiled in her belly, separate from Steve's claiming - a rush of love and hotwife arousal. He wanted to watch her, now that he knew her love was unshakeable; she wanted his eyes on her, now that she knew he would fight for her. To Jess, it wasn't pathetic; it was a testament to his love, her love, their love.

Chris would watch Jess fuck Steve. And even if neither of them would've chosen this fate, they could still get off on it, knowing that it was something they could share, not something that could tear them apart. That was what Jess's defiance had bought them. Fetish as a survival mechanism, not toxic destruction.

Steve coughed, snapping her out of it. "Well?"

"Yeah, Steve," Jess said, her voice a husky purr. "Your terms are acceptable."

"Actually," Chris said. "I have something."

Steve's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Excuse me?"

Chris swallowed. "You said it's a condition. Of my employment. So... if I have to watch you fuck Jess... then I'm on the clock."

"What."

"Those are work hours. I get paid."

For a second, the sheer audacity of the request stunned them all into silence. Then Jess shattered it with a genuine laugh. She leaned in and kissed Chris hard before turning back to Steve, green eyes shining with mirth.

"Yeah, Steve. Fair labor practices. You want him to watch, pay the hourly rate."

Steve rubbed his face with a heavy hand. "Jesus Christ. You know what? Fine. Sure. Fucking Zoomers, I swear to God." Looking at Jess's fingers curling in Chris's hair, he realized that the cuckoldry hadn't broken their bond at all. He'd even been tricked into funding it.

"You can laugh, Jess. You can treat this like a union contract. Your boy can make his jokes. But there's one term that we still need to discuss."

Jess's smile faded.

"I just fucked you. I just came inside you. And I'm going to keep doing it until it takes. You know exactly what I mean. Say it, so you understand." His words stripped away the protective armor of their banter; the reality of the situation returned.

Jess swallowed. "You... you're going to get me pregnant."

"If you're not already."

Jess looked inward, past her defiance, past her love for Chris, past her desperate need for survival. And she realized with mixed horror and joy that in the darkest, most terrifying corners of her soul... she wanted it. She wanted it so badly it hurt. For years she had carried the ghost of their son, shoved the pain down, burying it under double shifts and college applications and the fight to survive. She had wanted Chris's baby. She still wanted Chris's baby.

But that black swirl of grief and lust still coursed through her. Steve was a monster, but he was a monster with resources, power, and virility. His ugly, veined cock had made her come on a desk in front of the only man she'd ever loved and some animal part of her had responded with yes, that, more, put it in me and make it stay. That sick part of her wanted his seed; the fracture on her heart wanted nothing more than to be a mother again, no matter who made her one.

But not at the cost of Chris. That was the one line Jess had refused to cross.

She turned to look at her boyfriend, tears pooling in her eyes, both from the weight of her own desires and the insanity of what she was asking him to endure. Her womb. Steve's bloodline. 3am with a bottle and a child who might have Steve's nose.

"Chris," she whispered. "Is... I... he's right. That's the... that's the thing, right there."

"I know."

"Can you do this?" Jess's tears began to spill. "If it keeps us together? If it keeps us alive? I... no man should have to do this. No woman should want this. Will you resent me? Will you resent the baby? Can you really do this?"

It was enough to drive any man insane. The permanent, living testament to his own failures and his ultimate cuckoldry? That was unthinkable for almost any man to bear. Jess needed Chris to understand the sacrifice he would be required to make.

Chris looked down at his hands for a minute, still scraped up from where he had crashed his bike, from trying and failing to get to her in time. He thought of the freezing cold in their apartment, the night at the hospital, the haunted look in Jess's eyes whenever she saw a woman with a baby. He thought of The Box.

He took a slow, shuddering breath. "I can do it. We can do it."

"It won't be yours," Jess whispered, cheeks wet. It won't be ours. I wanted ours.

"It'll be yours," Chris said. "Part of you. And I'll love whatever comes from you." He offered her a faint, strained but real smile. "We can be a family." His words were Jess's absolution, her permission, the final proof that his love for her was stronger than his trauma and stronger than Steve's power. This was Chris's final sacrifice.

Jess drew closer to him. "Promise me," she whispered, kissing his cheek, his temple, his jaw. "Promise me you won't leave. You won't run."

Chris wrapped his arms around her waist. "Never," he said, voice cracking but steady with the weight of the cuckold hell to which he had just consigned himself. "I promised you forever."

Steve cleared his throat. "Alright. Enough." He began to finally button his shirt over his chest, large fingers working the buttons calmly. "The terms are set. You have your deal. Unless there are any more last minute amendments..."

"Hold on," said Jess. She disentangled herself from Chris, wiped her tears, and pulled out her smartphone. She began typing.

Steve paused, his hands freezing on the last button of his shirt. "What is this?"

"Just making sure I have everything straight," Jess said, trying to sound casual. "Tuesday, Saturday... tuition... how do you spell cuckold?"

"No H," Chris said. "It's not cuck-HOLD. I watch enough videos. I should know."

Steve's brow furrowed. "Are you putting our deal in your fucking Notes app?"

"There's a lot of terms!" Jess said defensively. "I don't want you gaslighting me on this shit. Should we get a third-party witness or something?"

Now it was Steve's turn to laugh, short and incredulous, his frustrated possessiveness broken by the absurdity. "You want me to get our breeding contract fucking notarized, Red? Just... I don't know. Save it to PDF or something. Fucking Zoomers."

"You're an old man who fucks Zoomers, you're gonna deal with Zoomer shit," Jess muttered. "And... saved."

"Last thing," Steve said as he watched her replace the phone. He stood up, looming over the two of them, regaining a sliver of his old gravity. "Our deal starts now."

Jess's breath caught. "Now?" Her traitorous body was already responding to the low growl of his voice.

"All my new Girls get a day with me. Twenty-four hours. I'm taking you to the house."

She'd heard the Girls talk about the place. Steve's out-of-town fortress. The place he took them for nights they whispered about giddily. The thought of spending the night with him, letting him breed her again and again, sent a sick thrill to Jess's core.

She could have performed reluctance. But that was pointless. The deal was made; all that was left was to seal it.

"Yeah," she said. She turned to Chris, who gave the faintest nod. He was okay. He would be okay. "All right. "

Steve looked at her for a long second, sizing up this small furious redhead who had stood him down and fought him for terms to her womb.

Then he approached her, bent, and scooped her off the carpet like a groom collecting his bride. Jess's eyes widened - even as big as he was, she was astonished by his raw strength. Her arms went around his neck because physics demanded it; the sunbeam necklace pulled but failed to break.

"Open the door," Steve commanded Chris.

Chris opened the door.

Outside were the Girls: ten faces in a loose knot, red polo shirts and a pastiche of hair colors packed into the hallway outside the office. For a split second, they took in the scene - Steve with Jess in his arms, her hair a vibrant red mess - then burst into cheering, clapping, whoops. Brianna actually bounced on her toes; May clapped both hands against her bump, grinning in delight. Alyssa put her hands together, almost like she was praying, and tears brimmed in her eyes.

Julie's cackle rang off the tile, loud and proprietary, speaking over all of them like the queen she believed herself to be. "There she is! About fucking time, Stockwell."

Tara just said "Hooray..." and rolled her eyes so everyone knew she didn't care.

Carried in Steve's arms in a parody of crossing the threshold, Jess barely had eyes for them. She looked over Steve's shoulder and extended a hand to Chris. "I love you," she said, barely heard over the din.

He clasped it for just a moment. "I love you," he responded.

Then Steve stepped forward and their fingers parted. Chris watched them go, watched Jess's hand reaching out to him, her eyes full of devotion behind the bigger man's shoulder... and she vanished from sight. The most important person in his life left the office in another man's arms.

***

As Steve and Jess disappeared out the back door, the Girls began to drift away from the office. Savannah rolled her eyes. "Jesus Christ, Jules, your girl took forever. I've never seen an initiation take that long."

"Daddy lasted 30 minutes with me," Julie crowed. "The first time."

The tall, sporty blonde scoffed. "He lasted like ten, and that's because you don't know how to fuck. Anyway, some of us have a dining room to prep. Giggle Shift can throw the parade, we've got doors at eleven."

Julie smiled with all her teeth, smarting at the insult to her skills. "Don't strain yourself, cheerleader. Wouldn't want Snake Shift to break a nail."

Savannah sneered down at her antagonist before pushing her Girls out onto the floor. Shy Kelsey squeezed Savannah's hand once before heading out, followed by Dani and May.

Julie glanced at the laminated shift schedule. "Fuck!" she said, doing the math. "I'm down a server now!"

Tara didn't look up from her phone. "It's Wednesday, you'll be fine."

"No, it's Trivia Night. Jess always runs Trivia Night, the customers love her. Bri can't do it, she'll shit the bed again."

"Hey!" Brianna protested.

Tasha had already started pulling on her coat. "Y'all can hang around but I got shit to do before swing shift. RenΓ©e's got a doctor's appointment at two. 'Manda, you still need that ride to the bank?" She looked around. "Where that girl get to?"

***

Chris slumped into the chair in front of Steve's desk, his knee aching, the blood finally beginning to congeal into the beginnings of a scab. How had it only been an hour? He'd failed her. He'd lost her. He'd fought for her. He'd watched Steve breed her then heard her defy him. He'd heard Steve say he was worthless, and Jess tell Steve that Chris was worth ten of him. He'd heard Steve beg, in a voice that he'd never imagined could rest in the old man's mouth. He'd heard himself agree to the terms that made him a permanent cuckold.

He stared at his bleeding hands. Only an hour, and what had his life become? He was, by every metric of masculinity, utterly defeated.

But somehow, the suffocating black fog felt thinner. The veil had been pierced, the crushing weight on his chest vanished. The worst thing that could have happened to him had just happened... and he was still standing. Jess still loved him. And she wasn't going to let him go.

A figure appeared beside him.

It was Amanda. The young Hispanic woman had her long dark braid over her shoulder, her uniform polo straining against her full curves, her posture modest and shrinking, eyes deep with sympathy. She didn't look at Chris with pity or contempt - just genuine, unvarnished care and concern.

Amanda laid a gentle hand on Chris's shoulder. For a second she was just there, quiet, her presence offering comfort. Then she started, seemed to realize she was touching him - but didn't remove the hand. That was the confession, though Chris didn't notice it; he just knew she was his friend.

She looked down. "Your hands," she whispered.

"They're okay."

Amanda went to the mahogany sidebar, grabbing a clean napkin and a splash of bottled water before kneeling before him. When Chris presented his bleeding palms, she took them, her touch feather-light and warm as she dabbed the wet cloth against his skin. When his eyes met hers, she blushed faintly before resuming her work.

Alyssa entered behind him. "Oh, hon," she said, seeing Chris in the chair. She put her hand on his shoulder. "I'm... I'm sorry, hon. About..."

Tara drifted in and glanced at the desk. "That's gonna need Clorox. This is the nastiest room in the restaurant. We can't let the health inspector know about the harem."

Tasha filled the frame after her, her face an unreadable mask, standing on Chris's other side. Brianna slipped around her like a nervous cat, fidgeting, before looking down at Chris and offering a small smile.

Julie was last, tapping her fingers impatiently on her pregnant belly. She took in Chris, and for a second the queen-bee mask dropped and revealed a tired pregnant twenty-something with eyeliner, a fear of being abandoned, and a deep father-hunger she called love.

"You should go, dude," Julie said, actually sounding a little sorry for him. "Before it gets stupid. Steve said you're gone, you need to get out of here before Coe comes to tidy up."

Coe. So that was the terrifying blonde man's name. But Chris shook his head. "I'm not fired."

"What?"

"I'm not fired," he said, more confidently. "She... we... made a deal."

"A deal," Julie repeated as if he had started speaking Chinese. "What kind of deal?"

They listened as Chris explained the terms. Steve's Girl. The job. The benefits. Same shift. Two nights that were theirs. And once a week Chris would sit in a chair and watch, and he would be on the clock while he did it.

The room did a strange collective lean as he spoke. Brianna's hands covered her mouth. Tara stared at him intently, chewing her nail. Alyssa whispered "Oh, wow."

When Chris was finished, Tasha shook her head. "That's... well, that's new."

"You make deals with Steve all the time," Julie said.

"Not like this. That man doesn't compromise. He offers the deal and I take it." She stared at Chris with something new in her eyes. "In the eight years I've been around, that man has never given up a single inch of control. Not to a Girl. Not a husband or a boyfriend. He imposes terms and folks take 'em or they walk."

"Jess..." She shook her head again, almost in awe. "She bought your ass. She got him to back down. That's..."

"Tasha has Josiah, I have Josh," Tara affirmed. "But... it's not like Josh gets anything out of it besides me. So. Congrats, I guess."

Tasha's eyes flickered at her partner's name. The Girls' boyfriends and husbands could stay, if they could handle it, if they could cope with Steve's claim and didn't rock the boat. That was the category Chris was being offered, but not even their men had gained contractual status.

Brianna bounced in angst. "She yelled at him. You don't yell at Steve! He's... Steve."

Julie pondered Chris. "My fiancΓ© couldn't keep it in his pants. He bailed. You... I guess you fought for her, and I don't know, maybe Daddy respected that or something." She had to rationalize it, otherwise she might wonder why Jess's man had fought for her, but Julie's hadn't. That thought led back to meth, and she couldn't be doing that again, not with the baby.

"She fought for you too, Chris," Alyssa sniffed. To her, Steve was like an untouchable god who provided but must not be angered. The idea of demanding terms from him was almost blasphemous... but that meant that her friend had stood up to a god. "She must really love you. To go against Steve like that?"

Chris looked down at his lap, then back up at the Girls. They weren't looking at him like he was a pathetic cuckold. Amanda's soft fingers rubbed his as she stared up at him, eyes big and brown and admiring. Alyssa's hand on one shoulder, Tasha's on the other, even Julie gave his uninjured knee a pat. They were elevating him to a place of honor. They saw what Jess had seen: the rare, good man that one of their own had decided was worth fighting for.

"I was lost," Chris whispered. He looked at Amanda's devoted eyes, then at Alyssa, the sunny, happy woman who somehow radiated cheer even in gloom. His words spilled out. "For two years. I just... I couldn't breathe. I felt like I had nothing to give her. And today... I felt like it was finally rock bottom. I've failed her so much..."

Alyssa smiled. "Well dontcha know, my mom always says... when you hit rock bottom, ya got no place to go but up."

The words hit Chris like a shot of adrenaline. No place to go but up.

His depression wasn't cured. The fog was still waiting. They were still on the edge of survival. The reality of Steve taking his girlfriend for 24 hours was a heavy, terrifying weight to carry... and what he would put inside her was even worse. Imprisonment within Steve's system, eternal degradation for both of them... but Jess had seen Chris as someone worth fighting for. And the other Girls had seen it too.

Rock bottom, sure. But that meant the freefall was over. He was finally standing on solid ground.

"Hey," Julie said. "If you're actually still on the books, you're gonna be a disaster at work today. Tasha?"

"He can have the day," Tasha said. She looked at Chris, dry, short, no hug. "You look like shit, kid. Kitchen will survive. See you tomorrow."

"Sure," Chris said, his voice steadying with a resonance it had lacked for years. "I have some things I need to take care of. A mess I need to clean up."

Amanda's fingers lifted from his hands, finally, reluctantly. "If you need... I'm... we're here."

"I know," Chris said, even if he didn't know the rest of what she hadn't said.

He took a deep, shuddering breath, placed his hands on the armrests of the chair, and forced himself to his feet. His torn knee flared with hot pain, but he stood. Then, with the Girls' eyes on him, Chris limped out into the morning. The climb had begun.

***

The cab of Steve's massive F-350 smelled like black ice air freshener; it was almost too clean, Jess thought. He got it detailed for sure. As Steve rumbled out of the restaurant parking lot and onto the street, the atmosphere between them settled into a strange, electric silence.

Outside, Akwetanon performed its usual trick of looking deader in daylight. The mill went by on the left, a rusted cathedral nobody prayed in anymore. A VFW sign hung crooked over a parking lot with three trucks in it. Factory Street was a strip of dirty snow and payday loan glass.

Jess side-eyed Steve. He had his hands at ten to two, eyes locked onto the road, face inscrutable. Thirty minutes ago, they had been fucking like animals. Fifteen minutes ago, they had been screaming at each other. Now they were contractually and biologically bound. He had agreed to fund her and Chris's life; she had agreed to bear his child. He had carried her out in front of the other Girls like a conquering hero. And now they were sitting in traffic at a red light on Elm Street.

What did two people say to each other in this situation?

"So what the hell are we even gonna do for twenty-four hours, Steve? Just hang out?"

Steve blinked, derailed by the question, before chuckling. "Like I said. We're going to get to work on getting you pregnant."

A flush crept up Jess's neck, and her body gave an involuntary throb of anticipation. Part of her writhed in despair. Another part of her, the part that would use the deal as an excuse to finally take what it wanted all along, couldn't wait.

"Yeah, I got that," Jess replied, the old smirk tracing her lips. "And what about the other 23 hours and 59 minutes? Tell me you at least have Netflix or something."

Steve laughed again; the audacity thrilled him more than he cared to admit. "It'll take more than a minute, Red. But yeah, Netflix, sure. I'll get you dressed, we'll grab a great dinner, I'll pour you a glass of wine that costs more than your car. And I'm going to bend you over every piece of furniture I can until I am absolutely certain I've knocked you up."

Jess held his gaze, heart hammering in her ribs. The truck jerked back into motion. "Where am I sleeping?"

"In my bed, of course. Plenty of room."

"In that case, you need to turn right on Maple."

Steve frowned. "The hell for?"

"I need an overnight bag."

"Plenty of stuff at the house."

"I'm not wearing Tara's jammies. At least let me get my toothbrush, it's on your way, just pull over."

Steve stiffened. He ruled an empire, he commanded this town, he had conquered dozens of women. Nobody told him to just 'pull over.' But... the way Jess spoke to him not like a god or a monster or a daddy, but a partner? That appealed to something in Steve, something he hadn't had in a long time.

"Fine. Maple it is."

A few minutes later, Steve pulled the massive truck to the curb in front of the dilapidated brick building that housed Apartment 3B. He had been doing recon out here months ago, watching Jess run, before she had even walked into his office. "Five minutes. Don't make me come up there."

"Keep your shirt on," she said, climbing out of the high cab.

Jess grabbed underwear, toiletries, a couple changes of clothes, a few manga she had been meaning to catch up on. She stared at the unmade bed for a while - Chris would sleep there alone tonight, knowing that across town, his girlfriend was warm in the arms of the man who owned their lives. Jess felt another pang of guilt - she knew what Steve was, knew what he'd done to them, knew that Chris would hurt all night, but part of her was vibrating with excitement.

She loved Chris. She hated Steve. And she was still looking forward to feeling Steve's cock inside her again. What did that make her?

"That's all?" Steve asked as she climbed back in.

"I'm not moving in," Jess muttered. "Don't get excited."

Steve chuckled again as the truck rumbled on its way out of town.

***

Neither noticed the car turning onto Lincoln Street right behind them.

Chris sat behind the wheel of the rusty Civic, heart sinking as he watched Steve's truck peel away. He shook his head; there was no time for crying or feeling sorry for himself. He had work to do.

Chris parked, climbed the stairs, and opened the door to the dark, freezing, empty apartment. He stood in the entryway for a moment. It would be so, so easy to just collapse back onto the couch and lose himself in a virtual world. Or jack off to whatever his fevered imagination had Jess doing right now. Or crawl into bed and never climb back out. So many easy paths to take, so many ways to let the fog creep in, surrender, succumb.

Of course it was easy. He'd been doing it for years. And look where it had led him, led both of them.

Chris took a deep breath. There's something I need to do, he thought. And something after that. And after that.

First things first. He knelt down in front of the cheap, particle-board TV stand, and extracted the black Playstation console from the mass of HDMI cords and power cables. Cradling it like a relic from a forgotten temple, he carried it to the kitchenette and set it on the scratched dining table.

Then Chris went delving into the bedroom closet. Pushing aside their winter coats and the other neglected junk, his hand briefly brushed The Box. He gently picked it up, considered it and set it aside on the floor - that, too, needed handling. He resumed his search, digging through bags and cheap plastic totes until he finally emerged with his prize.

Chris walked back into the kitchenette, squared up, and stared down at the Playstation for a long time. It was just a hunk of plastic and silicon, but it had become so much larger than that. He thought about the worlds he had built, the skins he had unlocked, the prestige and achievements he had ground out night after night. He had poured so much effort, placed so much manufactured value on those fantasies. He could be a hero, a soldier, a warrior; he could build, he could create, he could destroy; he could be a god in the dark, insulated from the crushing failures of real life. This had been his anesthetic, his escape from the nightmare of his everyday reality.

But depression grows on such things. The pouring of his self-worth into imaginary triumphs had strengthened the fog, not lifted it. Building his empires of isolation, forging his campaigns of saccharine merit, while allowing Jess to bust her ass and blinding himself to the reality of their struggle, all of that just deepened his self-disgust. It was a vicious cycle. The more he gamed, the more worthless he felt; the more worthless he felt, the more he retreated into the game.

"We bought you that console, Chris." His father's words from three days ago echoed in his head, dripping with that familiar, disappointed condescension. They had, for his 15th birthday. It was the tether to their world, a world of conditional love, the world that demanded he abandon his pregnant, terrified girlfriend to retain his place in a polite, well-ordered society. He had chosen Jess, he had chosen the exile, but he had kept the machine, allowing the ghost of his parents' coddling and contempt to keep him small and useless.

The Playstation wasn't evil. It wasn't even bad, not really. Chris's failures were his own fault, not the machine's fault. But the machine had allowed him to manifest his worst tendencies, kept him numb and unresponsive, served as an anesthetic for his self-hatred. No, the machine wasn't evil, but things have meaning. And so do actions.

Chris lifted the hammer.

Crack. The heavy steel head splintered the matte-black casing, sending a jagged spiderweb of fractures across the surface.

He could have sold it, he supposed. A pawn shop might've given him a hundred bucks for it. But the money mattered less than the act of severing. He was rejecting the version of himself that used fantasies to hide from his own worthlessness. He was severing the tether to his parents. He was destroying the apathetic boy so the man Jess believed in could be born.

Crack. Pieces of black plastic flew across the linoleum floor.

Crack. It was intoxicating. Crack. It was catharsis. Crack. He smashed the microtransactions. Crack. He smashed the saved games. Crack. He smashed the achievements. Crack. He beat the machine until it was nothing but pulverized plastic and twisted metal, the carcass split open to reveal its soulless innards and shattered motherboards.

When he finally stopped, Chris stood over the table, chest heaving. The Playstation had been easy to destroy. It was always easy to destroy things. Building was much harder. But this was step one.

He looked back into the living room; his eyes fell on the Switch. Jess had given that to him for Christmas, saving her tips to afford it, presenting it to him with a smile. He wasn't going to touch that. He needed to find a second controller somewhere, so they could play together. He wasn't on a crusade against gaming; he wasn't rejecting joy or comfort or fun; no, he was destroying the version of himself that did those things alone and in the dark.

What he and Jess did now, they would do as a team.

Chris set the hammer down beside the ruined Playstation and kept moving. Step one was over. There was more to do before Jess came home from Steve's. One step at a time.

***

The ride to Steve's house - over rural roads packed with snow, past trees covered in ice - took 22 minutes. Finally, he turned down a long, secluded driveway, flanked by acres of thick, dark forest.

Jess didn't know what she had expected - torches and organ music, maybe. Or maybe a glass-and-steel estate like Tony Stark's house. Instead, she saw a massive, older-style wooden country home, built with thick, dark timber and solid stone with a wraparound porch with a large detached garage. The house was private, solid, well-maintained but clearly an older property.

Jess eyed it levelly, showing neither surprise nor feigned disdain. The place said volumes about the man. He didn't care about modern trends or showing off to the neighbors. Steve sought permanence, structure, something solid that lasted, safe and closed off from the outside. A fortress of control and isolation, a bastion of last-century power that could harbor any number of secrets.

"What do you think?" Steve asked.

"It's big. How long have you had it?"

"Bought it in '95."

Steve led her up the brick walkway that wound up to the porch; Jess clutched her worn duffel as she eyed the surroundings. Isolated, in the middle of a field full of dirty snow, with a wall of pines shielding them from view. A pair of muddy boots by the door, too small to be his.

Steve entered the code on the front door, and Jess stepped into his lair. The entry was warm, smelling of wood polish, old coffee, that little bit of cigar that always accompanied Steve. It was clean, too. He pays someone to do this. No way he's scrubbing the baseboard, Jess thought to herself. The living room opened up large and a little dated - the original dark paneling from '95, a massive sectional that could hold a squad of Girls and probably had, a brick fireplace, an enormous television.

The space lacked any semblance of a woman's touch. No throw pillows, no bright paintings, few blankets, a noticeable dearth of coziness. This was a place made to contain women, not by women. It was a well-manicured, wealthy man-cave, but a man-cave for all that.

Over the mantel was mounted a Japanese katana, its scabbard dark, its binding worn down to the color of old tea.

Steve, removing his coat, saw Jess eyeing it. "My grandpa took it off a Japanese officer on Okinawa. So he said."

The next spot on the tour was the massive kitchen: a butcher-block granite island with knife marks and faint rings from pans, an enormous fridge, pots and pans hanging from an assortment of hooks, a calendar on the wall where Girls' names shared equal space with corporate meetings.

Jess set her sad duffel bag down next to the island. Steve grabbed a Coke from the fridge and sipped it, staring at her. She could see that obsession creeping back into his eye - the triumph mingled with the neediness he had shown when he thought she might leave. She felt that heat tingle between her thighs again. She leaned over the island, feeling strands of hair loose from her bun, and allowed herself a smirk.

"So. You've finally got me in your house. Right where you wanted me. You gonna do something about it or what?"

Steve groaned, and Jess grinned, showing teeth.

I shouldn't want him to fuck me. I shouldn't want this monster inside me again. But I do. I had the best sex of my life on his desk this morning, he knows it, I know it. If I have to be his Girl... well, I'm going to enjoy it.

"Take a picture, Steve. Or do what you brought me here to do."

Steve set the Coke down. "Come here."

Jess sidled over to him, still sporting the cocky smirk that had always gotten her into and out of trouble, and allowed herself to be pulled into his embrace. Steve's mouth crashed down on hers. It was a dirty, needy kiss, his breath tasting of tangy soda and predatory hunger. His thick fingers undid her bun and tangled in her vibrant hair, and Jess tilted her head back to deepen the angle. She let out a soft, feral groan against his lips, rising up on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms around her thick neck.

They made out with desperate ferocity, none of the tentative, threshold-crossing tenderness of this morning. Jess didn't feel like a victim, or a sugar baby. Steve wasn't doing this to her, they were doing this together. She had made a bargain, fought for a bargain, and here she was fulfilling the terms. As Steve's heavy body pressed her against the island and ground his crotch against hers, Jess held onto that logic. For the next 24 hours, she wasn't a broke, desperate girl sacrificing her body for her boyfriend; she was an equal partner in the contract they had forged.

Steve tore his mouth away before lifting Jess onto the island. His hands moved to the hem of her red uniform polo, but Jess grabbed his wrists.

"Leave it," she commanded, her voice husky.

Steve paused, his brow furrowing. A wicked grin touched his lips. "You like wearing my name while I fuck you?"

"Shut up and get your pants off," Jess fired back as she undid her belt. Her jeans and panties pooled on the floor, kicked to the side. She was a little horrified by her own eagerness, the grin that crossed her face at the thought of fucking Steve again.

Steve's hands had dropped his own pants, freeing his massive cock; Jess's breath hitched in her throat. That thing had been inside her less than two hours ago, but the sheer size and thickness of it was still stunning. Steve was heavily veined, dark, already weeping a thick drop of pre-cum from the broad head.

Jess hopped back onto the island and leaned back on her hands, arching her back and spreading her legs for her boss. The granite was cool on the round cheeks of her ass, and her pussy was absolutely throbbing, slick and swollen, hungry for the conquering force of Steve's massive cock.

Steve spit into his palm and stroked his cock a few times to lube it up. Then he stepped between her spread thighs, grabbed her hips with his calloused hands, and lined himself up with her dripping center. "You want this?" he muttered, dragging the fat head through her folds.

"You know I fucking want it, Steve, just..." then Jess gasped as the first inch took the air out of her. She was so ready it shamed her. Gripping her hips hard enough to bruise, Steve slowly breached her, using slow strokes to lodge himself deeper and deeper. Jess's head rolled back as she muttered "fuck... fuck..." God it felt good, impossibly, sinfully good.

As Steve began to saw in and out of her, Jess gasped and rolled her hips back to meet him. "That's it," Steve gasped, his beard scraping her cheek. "That's my girl. Take it. You asked for this."

"That's... the deal..." Jess moaned in between thrusts. He laughed against her hair and started hammering her faster, eliciting breathless cries from her throat. Jess was making sounds that she had never imagined herself making, leaning back against the island, her legs twitching in the air as Steve fucked her.

She could feel every inch of his bare dick inside her; it was heaven and hell. Despite everything Steve was - a manipulative, dangerous ruthless monster - he knew how to fuck. The Girls hadn't been exaggerating. Compared to Chris's loving, hesitant, clumsy touches, Steve had forty years of experience and a string of conquests and terrifying confidence. And he was a good, good fuck. He knew how to change the angle to search for her pleasure spots, he knew how to leverage his weight to grind her clit, he knew how to maintain a powerful, steady rhythm to bring her soaring to new heights.

Steve planted one hand beside her hip, crept the other under her ass, and fucked Jess in deep, rolling strokes that made her tits bounce under the polo and the sunbeam necklace jump against her throat. "Feel that?" he growled. "That's where it goes. I'm gonna cum in this tight little cunt again and again until it takes."

The kitchen filled with the wet, sloppy sounds of their sex, his heavy breathing mingling with her high-pitched moans. Jess locked her legs around his waist, pulling his hips in tighter to make him hit deeper. The friction and relentless tempo of his cock was nearly blinding; every time he bottomed out, it sent a jolt of white-hot electricity up her spine. Soon Jess's body was strung tight as a wire, her breath was ragged, and she felt the pressure rising in her cunt.

"I'm gonna cum," Jess cried out, her fingers gripping his thick biceps. "I'm cumming... Steve..."

"Do it," he commanded, voice dark. "Cum for me, Red. Let it feel good."

Jess shattered, screaming, her body locking up and inner walls clamping down violently on his thick cock as her good orgasm crashed through her. She swore she could see stars for a second as she hugged his massive body close, legs around his waist, hands on his biceps, his massive tool held deep inside her as she trembled in ecstasy.

Jess could see his eyes darken. "Jess..." He whispered. "I'm about to..."

"No," she said, recovering from the shockwave. "No, wait." She pushed against his chest and unhooked her legs.

Steve blinked, but withdrew, his cock bobbing heavily as it slid out of her slick heat. She had stopped him just before his moment of orgasm - and once more, he had bent to her will. "What is it?"

"Living room," she said. "You said every room. And you make food on this island."

That almost-smile hit his face again. "Bossy."

"Come on," she said. Jess hopped off the island, grabbed Steve's hand, and tugged him to the living room. Steve followed, bemused at her audacity, and found himself backed up against the couch and shoved onto it. Caught off guard, he fell backwards onto the cushions with a heavy oof. He sprawled there, massive body recumbent on the couch, his massive cock pointed up towards the ceiling.

Jess climbed atop him, still wearing her red uniform polo, her bare, pale thighs bracketing his waist. She looked down at him, and her locks of messy red hair were pierced by the fierce, commanding fire burning in her eyes. She wasn't submitting now; she was taking control of the contract.

Jess lined Steve's cock up with her pussy, and locked eyes with him as she sank down, slowly and deliberately, taking every inch of him inside her until their hips met. Steve groaned, head falling back against the cushions at the glorious embrace of her hot core.

Jess began to ride him, starting slow, grinding her hips in tight circles, maximizing the friction. "You wanted my womb, right?" she taunted, making it sound like a curse. She picked up the pace, bouncing on his thick cock, flexing her ass cheeks to ride him. "You wanted to breed me, Steve? Prove it. Show me you can hold up your end of the deal."

Steve's nostrils flared as he gazed up at the gorgeous 21-year old riding his cock, pushing him around, telling him how to fuck her. Her defiance wasn't performative, like Tara's aimless rebellion; it was targeted, deliberate, grounded in the reality of their unorthodox deal.

Jess braced her hands flat against his sweaty chest, almost like she was the one who had put him in this position, not the other way around. His hands slid around to her ass, thick fingers gripping her soft cheeks, trying to reassert control, but her hips snapped out of his control, pounding his cock in a frantic blur.

"Give it to me," she panted. "Give it to me, you bastard. Fill me up."

"Jess," Steve groaned, his voice turning nearly feral. His restraint was nearly gone. His massive frame tensed up and his fingers clamped down hard on the pert, meaty cheeks of her ass.

"Do it," Jess demanded, her eyes squeezing shut as her own orgasm approached. "Put it in me! Knock me up!"

Steve roared, thrusted upwards a final time, and unloaded. Jess gasped, her eyes flying wide open. She could feel the sheer volume and force of his ejaculation, the heavy pulsing heat flooding the deepest part of her. He pumped into her again and again, sealing the contract they had made with the ancient ink of biology.

Steve collapsed back against the couch cushion, chest heaving violently, his eyes closed, his grip on her hips slowly relaxing. Jess slumped forward, still braced against his torso, feeling the occasional, fading twitch of his cock emptying itself inside her. One more load, one more breeding, one more army of sperm headed for her uterus. This was what she had signed up for, first and foremost to survive - but also because she had craved it. Denying it by this point would be useless posturing.

They lay there for a few minutes in a bizarre afterglow. Steve shifted his weight slightly, allowing one hand to come up and tangle in her hair. He even placed a surprisingly tender kiss on her temple. His face was all quiet satisfaction. He finally had her, finally. She was in his house, straddling his hips, filled with his cum, utterly bred.

Jess looked down at Steve's contented face. "You got anything to eat? I didn't have breakfast, you know."

Steve blinked. "What?"

"Food, Steve. Calories." She patted his chest in a "good game" type gesture before pushing herself up and off his cock with a wet, heavy, pop. "I left the apartment in a hurry this morning for some reason and I'm starving."

Steve let his head fall back against the couch, letting out a long laugh that morphed into a groan. "Check the fridge, Red. Knock yourself out. Just don't touch Julie's pickles. She'll cut you."

"Thanks," Jess said cheerfully, as she strode back into the kitchen, feeling the cool air on her naked lower half.

Her first target wasn't the food. She made for her uniform pants and fished out her smartphone. Leaning casually against the cool granite of the island where Steve had just claimed her a second time, she typed out a quick text to Chris.

hey. She wrote. Paused. What had her life become when she was about to text this to her boyfriend?

got to the house. just had sex again in the kitchen. he's huge. it was intense

She stared at the screen, imagining Chris crestfallen, lying morose on the couch, in the bed, somewhere else. What if she got home tomorrow... and he wasn't there? What if he did leave her? Could she blame him if he did? What man could live this kind of life, knowing that his nemesis was spending all day knocking up the woman he loved?

Jess prayed that Chris had meant his promises. He promised me forever, she thought. Maybe this isn't what we thought forever would look like. But he promised.

but i just wanted you to know i'm thinking of you. i love you chris. more than anything. no secrets. i love you. i love you. i'm not forgetting about you over here. i'll be home tomorrow.

Please be home when I get there, she thought to herself.

Jess hit send.

Three dots appeared almost immediately. Chris's response:

i love you. i'll be here. come home

Jess took a deep breath, and opened the refrigerator. New objective: find and eat the most expensive thing on the shelf.

***

Back at the apartment, Chris was on his feet. He refused to sit. Sitting was how the fog won, how it had won last night and every night before it. That was how he got lost inside his own head again. Instead, Chris stayed standing and kept moving.

For two years, the engine of his anxiety had been fueled by the fear of his own inadequacy. He had been waiting for Jess to realize how worthless he was, for the bottom to fall out, for her to finally leave him, for a superior man to come take her from him. But the shoe had finally dropped, the superior man had taken her, the ultimate humiliation had been exacted - and Jess had refused to abandon him. Cuckoldry was no longer a weapon that Steve could use to destroy them. Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β

Chris realized he had to be a man, but not like Steve. Trying to imitate his father, or Steve, or his pastor... he wasn't any of those men. He would have to forge a different kind of strength. The strength that could protect and provide in other ways, could build a home, could guard and endure, could nurture a family and raise a child, even if that child shared the blood of a monster. The boy who cowered from the world needed to die. It was time for the man to be born.

Chris cleaned the kitchen. He swept. He mopped. He washed dishes while music blared in his ears. He gathered the laundry, something Jess had always done while he was stewing on the couch. He stripped the bed. He vacuumed. Anything to turn this hovel into something that he and Jess could live in and not feel like stagnancy, decay, desolation.

As he cleaned the bedroom, Chris's eyes fell on The Box, sitting on the floor in front of the closet. There was something he needed to do with that, too.

His phone buzzed.

got to the house. just had sex again in the kitchen.

Chris read Jess's texts and got hard so fast it made him angry. The image arrived in his mind: Jess getting her brains fucked out by Steve, the sounds from this morning in a nice kitchen, another hot load of the old man's cum inside his girlfriend as she begged for it. He wanted to collapse on the couch and beat his dick until it was sore. He wanted to smash his phone like he'd smashed the console.

She's coming home. She loves you. She fought for you. You fight, now, by not letting it win. Keep moving.

It was time to run errands. Chris thought about biking again, but his knee and palms still stung and he wasn't trying to wipe out on Factory Street twice in one morning. He drove to the place on Maple that still let you use washing machines without an app, asked Jeff to keep an eye on his clothes (Jeff grunted, which counted for yes), then drove to Goodwill. He bought a small square table for five dollars.

Back at 3B, he folded the laundry, placed the table and... did what needed to be done with it. Jess would see it when she got home, then he would explain.

Chris showered, then took a good look at himself in the mirror. It was brutally honest: soft midsection, hollow eye sockets, scratchy, juvenile beard. He could still turn his head and see the ghost of a strong jaw under the flab. We'll find a way to get that back, Chris said to himself in Jess's cadence.

He shaved the beard.

At 4:40 he called the kitchen line at Steve's Stacks. Tasha picked up on the second ring. "Stacks, back house."

"Tasha, it's Chris. I want to come in for the swing shift."

She paused. Chris could hear Amanda yelling (as much as she ever yelled) something to Manuel in the background. "You were supposed to be on morning."

"I know. And I know you guys are short on swing."

"You sure? You had a hell of a morning."

"Yeah. That's why I need to come in."

Tasha was quiet long enough for him to hear a ticket printer. "Aight. You come, you work. Don't be setting my kitchen on fire again. You know how many strings Steve pulled to keep our shit open after Monday?"

"Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm on my way."

He could almost hear her smiling on the other end. "We'll be glad to have you, kid."

Chris hung up. He stood in the apartment for a moment, marveling at how much work he had done, rubbing his clean jaw. Somehow, he'd done more construction today than he'd ever done at the old job. The fog still sat in the corner, waiting to overwhelm him if he let it.

That battle wasn't over. That battle might never be over. But until he could afford a therapist or medication or anything else, the only cure he had was purpose, and meaning, and responsibility. Staying busy was his salvation. In the Swamps of Sadness, yielding to despair was what dragged you down; you stopped moving, the swamp pulled you under.

Keep moving. No place to go but up.

Chris donned his red polo and went to work.

Jess's afternoon at Steve's was surreal.

She ate lunch standing up, a giant, sloppy sandwich over a paper towel. Steve had buttoned himself back into being a host, roaming around the kitchen in a large sweater and jogging pants. He looked almost cozy, Jess thought, more like the 50-something old man he was than the dark titan of Akwetanon.

But Jess refused to strip away the context. This was the corrupt, immoral beast who held her town hostage, who had humiliated Chris and cornered her into surrendering her womb. She loved fucking him, the chemistry was electric, but he was a monster. She couldn't let herself forget that.

After her lunch, Jess excused herself for a quick rinse in Steve's massive shower, scrubbing the sweat off. Redressed in a tattered old T-shirt and sweatpants, she descended back to the living room and plopped onto the couch beside Steve, dropping her calves right across his lap.

Steve regarded her levelly. His Girls usually sat at his feet, cuddled up to him, or waited for him to initiate contact. Jess was purposely - flagrantly - treating him like a partner. An equal. His calloused hand came up to rest on her shin, an authentic, casual intimacy.

Jess took the remote and started flicking through the TV menu. "Holy shit, you have all the streaming services."

"I have a lot of guests."

"Uh-huh." Jess made her way to the Anime category.

"Absolutely not," Steve said when the opening credits began.

"You dragged me here on my day off, I'm watching anime."

"How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom," Steve read, offended by the existence of subtitles. "My grandpa killed these people, you know. The hell is this show even about?"

"It's a whole thing," Jess explained. "The main character got dropped into another world and has to run a country with a bunch of competent women. It's fun! And the main character has a harem. You of all people should get it."

Steve watched, against his will. "Heh. Eight women for this nerd?"

Jess looked at him with something bordering on contempt. "You have ten. Well, eleven, now."

"Kind of. Tasha's... sort of graduated," he rumbled.

"Either way, you're fucking a cheer squad. Maybe you just don't like the way it looks from the outside, hm?"

He kept complaining, she kept answering. The afternoon took on the surreal domesticity of a much older man and a much younger woman who had fucked twice today and were now arguing about TV. Every few minutes Jess was struck by the quiet horror and insanity of it all - the long months of struggle, the desk, the please, the deal.

Well, a girl had to do what a girl had to do. These were desperate times.

***

Steve got nostalgic after the third episode they watched, where one of the heroines had to deal with her father.

"We were dirt poor, you know," he said, drifting back. "You think this is cold? You should have seen Chicago in the late seventies. The wind off Lake Michigan would cut right through your bones. We lived in a shitty two-room walk-up in Little Italy. Radiator was busted half the time."

No taunting this time; Jess listened.

"My old man died in a machine press accident when I was seven," Steve continued, staring at the howling snowstorm out the window. "Ma worked three jobs. Cleaning houses, washing dishes at the diner on Taylor Street. I shoplifted a little bit for the Gaylords. My cousin Gio ran with them for a while, too. We did bad shit, but we were all just trying to get by."

He didn't tell her the rest of it, the nights his mom would come home deep in her cups, screaming in slurred Italian and throwing bottles at his head. He didn't tell her about the vague, terrifying memories of his father's heavy fist against his mom's jaw before the accident finally put him in the ground. Those memories made Steve feel small, and he hated feeling small.

"I swore to God when I was twelve years old that I would never be cold again. And I swore I would never let a woman I cared about go hungry." Steve rose from the couch. "I need a fucking drink."

Jess stared after him. There had been a boy named Steve, she thought, a terrified, freezing boy long before there was a despot. They weren't so different, both born at the bottom, full of ambition, driven by the clawing need to survive the cold.

The difference was that Steve had decided the only way to never be a victim again was to become a predator.

***

The quiet intimacy couldn't last against the reality of what they were, though. About 4:00 PM, their conversation had come back around to the contract.

"I'll pay the hospital bills," Steve said. "Same as I do for all of them. The health insurance is good, but there's a deductible, and I cover that."

"Does your name go on the birth certificate?" Jess asked quietly.

"No." He jabbed a finger at her. "Never. Absolutely not, for none of them. My tracks stay covered. The kid can go on there, if he wants. I pay the bills, he changes the diapers and all that bullshit."

Her eyes narrowed. "Chris isn't just gonna change diapers. He's gonna be a father. A great one."

Steve scoffed. "We'll fucking see, won't we? Anyway, he's a placeholder. I'm the one providing for our kid when you have it. He couldn't do it, that's why you're in this situation, right?"

Jess's face had gone cold with something approaching fury. "You provide, you say. But you don't provide a dad."

"Not interested in playing house, Jess. Did that twice, never went well. Raising kids, worrying about them? That's for men who don't have empires to run. I make sure they're taken care of."

"What I think," Jess said, the disgust evident in her voice, "is that you're a deadbeat a dozen times over, and all the money in the world doesn't change that."

The temperature in the room plummeted to zero. Steve went terrifyingly still. Jess had poked at the very core of his pride.

"I am not a deadbeat," he hissed. "I protect. I provide. My kids don't go hungry, they don't freeze, they have everything they need."

Unlike I did, went unspoken. Jess suddenly grasped just a little of Steve's twisted psychology - his own childhood had been so desperately poor it had broken his parents, so as long as he did better than that, he was fulfilling the expectations of manhood. He satisfied his own low standards as paterfamilias.

"You don't provide your kids a dad," Jess snarled again, thinking of Alyssa crying on the way to the hospital. "When's the last time you even spoke to one of the kids you've made? Went to an ultrasound? Alyssa told me that you haven't been to one appointment. I've been going with her! That's your fucking baby, Steve! You throw money around and think that makes you a father. Just a deadbeat with a debit card."

Steve glared at her, hating how she pierced his delusion, stripped away the benevolent "protector" mask he wore to justify his harem.

"I'm better for these Girls than any of the so-called men in their lives. Rest assured of that." He shifted under her gaze. "But if Lyss wants me there that bad, I can clear my schedule for one. Maybe two. They can't know I'm the father. Moral support or whatever the fuck, fine."

Jess eyed him, her fury receding. "How many do you have running around out there?" she asked.

Steve shrugged. "Lost count around 2010 or so. But again, I take care of them. School, sports, hell I paid for RenΓ©e's travel softball."

"Wait. Tasha's girl is yours, too? She's almost 9. Just how freaking long have you been running this whole thing?"

Steve ignored the question. "You stick up for them," he noted. "Even Julie, though I know you two go at it."

"Someone has to look out for them," Jess said.

"They have managers."

"Julie and Savannah are at each other's throats half the time. What happened with them, anyway?"

Steve smirked. He liked to keep Julie and Savannah fighting. It kept them on their toes. "Savannah was top dog before Julie showed up. She's never forgiven Jules for taking her spot, and Jules knows Sav is gonna undercut her whenever she gets a chance. There can only be one."

Jess was intrigued despite herself. "Top dog. You mean your favorite. The Head Girl or whatever the fuck. How do you even decide that?"

"Not really a decision. Just sorta happened after a while. Before Savannah there was Millie. You'd have liked Millie. She runs the Duluth Restaurant now."

"How many have there been? How many 'favorites'?"

"Quite a few, Red. Quite a few." Steve took a sip of his Coke and looked back at the screen. History hung in the air, stretching back to the years before Jess was born. Savannah, then Julie. Who was next?

Like hell I'm gonna be his next favorite. Simping after him like Julie? Fuck off with that. I don't want it. She can have it.

"Next episode," she muttered, inching away from Steve, feeling like just another in a long line of disposable conquests.

***

Trivia night at Steve's Stacks was popular, and the difficulty was low; people who knew the capital of South Dakota were rare in Akwetanon. With Jess... indisposed... Julie had to run it. She ended up causing a clamor when she and a customer argued about the cast of The Big Bang Theory, and made it worse when she cited Chat GPT as her source. Tara rolled her eyes when she grabbed a stack of appetizers through the window. "I take it back. Jess needs to run Trivia. This is Julie's third crashout tonight."

Chris overheard her. He stood at the grill station, sweat beading on his forehead, a spatula gripped in his bandaged right hand. The Steve's Stacks kitchen was a chaotic ecosystem during the Wednesday dinner rush: shouting voices, clattering pans, and the relentless, mechanical hum of the exhaust hoods. The skin on his palms burned with movement, and his bruised knee throbbed when he shifted his weight.

That was okay. They kept his mind awake.

Since he had started, Chris had been trying to avoid the reality of work, to shrink into his mind, to tunnel himself into a quiet world where he was the only organism. The dinner rush had terrified him, his depression a cognitive weight, slowing his reaction times. If Tasha barked an order, he tended to freeze and second-guess himself. Something was different today. He stopped thinking about how he might fail; every time the anxiety gripped him, he just did something else.

He flipped four burgers, slid a row of buns into the toaster, then tried to plate a stack of fries. He fumbled, and about half of them fell on the floor. The fog pounced. You idiot. Can't do a goddamn thing right. Look at yourself, cuck, working to keep the lights on for the man fucking your...

"Nope," Chris said under his breath, moving for a broom. "Not today. Not now." He wouldn't be perfect today. He wouldn't be perfect tomorrow. Make a mistake, recover. Keep moving.

"Where's that truffle stack?" Tasha bellowed.

"Coming!" he shouted back, replacing the fries. Tasha glanced over her shoulder at him, then gave a sharp, approving nod. It wasn't just her - the dynamic of the restaurant seemed to have shifted. When Julie came back to grab the truffle stack, she bumped Chris's shoulder companionably on her way out. Brianna grinned at him when he handed her an appetizer. They weren't being nice out of pity, they had seen a score of cuckolds come and go. But Jess's fight for Chris - and his refusal to give up - had turned him from collateral damage into something like an honorary member of the tribe.

It hit again during a brief lull in the tickets, when the quiet allowed intrusive thoughts to return.

She's at the house right now. He's putting his hands on her skin. He's stretching her out. She's moaning his name. He's giving her the cock, the money, and the baby you couldn't. And you're scraping the grease off the grill that makes his burgers.

The angst, the humiliation, the sharp, suffocating bleakness of their situation hit him all at once. His breathing turned shallow; the edges of his vision blurred. He felt the spiral pulling him, threatening to drag him back down to the bottom.

"Tasha," Chris said. "I need a minute."

Tasha looked at his face and nodded. "Take five. Go out back."

Chris shoved the heavy metal door open into the icy winter air; his sweat immediately began to crystallize. He leaned against the cold brick edifice and slid down until he sat on an overturned milk crate, head between his knees.

Breathe. Breathe. Fight it. You matter. Jess fought for you. She thinks you matter. They think you matter. She's coming home.

The metal door creaked open. "Ope, didn't mean to crowd ya," said a soft Midwestern voice.

Chris looked up to see Alyssa standing in the doorway, winter coat draped awkwardly over her massive third-trimester belly. She stepped out into the freezing alley with him.

"You okay?" Alyssa asked gently. "Saw ya run out."

"Yeah," Chris said, wiping his eyes. "Just... needed some air."

Alyssa didn't call him on the lie. She waddled over and carefully lowered herself onto a stack of flattened cardboard boxes. She let out a long sigh, breath pluming in the air, resting her hands on the bump.

"Gets to me too, sometimes, ya know," she said quietly, looking out into the alley.

"The heat?"

She smiled prettily at him. "The all of it. The noise. The reality. You ever feel like... the world's just movin' so fast and you're so slow? Like underwater or something?"

"I do."

"I know what you're thinking about. I know it hurts."

"I'm trying not to spiral," he said. "To be strong. To just... push through it. But sometimes it's like you said, I call it the fog, and I can't breathe."

"I get like that too," Alyssa confessed, rubbing her belly. Her blue eyes shone in vulnerability. "Sometimes I think about my little bean here. And wonder what kinda life I'm giving her, y'know? It's just gonna be me and her. Steve... doesn't do dad stuff. My girl's not gonna have a father. Mom's gonna help when she can, but she's so weak with the chemo, and let's be real, I don't know how much longer I'll have her, y'know."

Chris stared in mute sympathy, not looking away. Alyssa, the sunniest of the Girls, Jess's best friend, looked on the verge of tears.

"Sometimes I think I made a mistake. Letting him pay for the chemo, even though we didn't have any other way. Letting him..." She sighed. "What I've done to myself, I guess. I keep thinking about all my mistakes, and the panic starts to take over."

"What do you do?" Chris asked. He hadn't thought about the other Girls... how they might handle all of this. There were worse fates than being a man in Steve's system. You could be a woman in Steve's system.

Alyssa smiled again. "I think about how much I'm gonna love her when she's born, no matter where she came from. I think about the people who love me. My mom. Jess. The other Girls... we stick by each other, y'know. We're the only ones who understand."

She shrugged. "I guess what I'm sayin', is... you're not alone, are ya?"

Chris let out a long, shuddering breath. The vice on his chest loosened. He wasn't alone; they were all just trying to survive the dark.

"Thanks, Lyss," he said. It was the first time he'd used the nickname.

"Anytime, Chris," she beamed. "Now let's get ya back inside before your booty freezes off."

***

"What do you feel like for dinner?" Steve asked. He stood in the doorway of what he had called the "fourth bedroom" while Jess looked at a row of unfamiliar dresses.

"Anything but a fucking burger."

Steve actually guffawed at that. "I'll call Leone's. They'll always have a table for me. If they don't, they'll make one."

The fourth bedroom was a wardrobe with a bed attached. A closet, a few hanging racks, full of dresses of all patterns and sizes. Silks, cheap knits, one black thing with tags still hanging, a full-length mirror with a crack in the lower corner. The only time Jess had ever worn a good dress was prom; one of the few things her mom had actually been willing to pay for.

"Seriously, wear anything you want. But our reservations are in 45 minutes so chop chop."

"I'm looking." Pretty Woman, rust belt edition. She flipped past the tight, Vegas-style club dresses until her hand stopped on a sleek, floor-length slip dress in a deep emerald green. It was heavy, genuine silk, cut low in the back with delicate, sweeping straps.

"I'll be down in a minute," she told Steve. "You're not supposed to look at this part." He rolled his eyes and complied.

Ten minutes later, Jess sized herself up in the full-length. The emerald green made her red hair seem even more vibrant, and highlighted the pale, freckled skin of her shoulders and the curve of her hips. The dress clung perfectly - she looked elegant, expensive and devastatingly beautiful. Like a girl in a gambling ad - or a plaything on the arm of a powerful man. She slipped her phone into a small black clutch, found a pair of strappy black heels in her size, and tottered out to the foyer. Heels had never been her fit.

Steve was waiting, a heavy wool overcoat already over his button-down and slacks. His eyes bulged when he saw her, and Jess couldn't restrain the satisfied grin from spreading across her face. His dark eyes roved her body, taking in the lines of her legs, the cling of the silk against her round breasts, and the defiant fire in her green eyes. That possessive hunger crept over his face again. He reached out, wrapped his massive hands around her body, and pulled her in for a hard, bruising kiss.

Prom night from hell, Jess thought. I *am* starving, though.

Leone's was an upscale Italian establishment just on the edge of Akwetanon with a stellar reputation; Jess had never had the money to set foot in there. She remembered Alyssa mentioning that it was Steve's favorite place in Akwetanon - the place he took his Girls when he wanted to show off his wealth and be seen with pretty women in public.

They entered through the heavy glass doors, Steve with one heavy hand squarely on the bare skin of her lower back. The restaurant was a cavern of old-school luxury that did the Midwest elegance thing well; East Coasters would have found it embarrassing. White tablecloths that were long out of style, low lamps with red shades, waiters and waitresses in white shirts and black slacks or pencil skirts. The smells were roasted garlic, rich tomato gravy, and expensive wine.

Steve was greeted by a fawning maitre d'. "Mr. Rossi," the older Italian man crooned, eyes darting briefly to Jess before snapping back to the local titan. "An absolute pleasure. Your usual booth?"

Jess observed the interaction clinically. Steve was clearly in his element. He didn't just have money, he commanded deference. To everyone in this room, she was just the newest jewel in the king's crown. As she walked on his arm, she felt the power, the reputation, she felt the luxury... and her adjacency to it, her status as accessory, not queen.

They got a booth that was not quite private and not quite not. Dark wood, a candle in a red glass cup, a pitcher of water. Jess sat in the green dress and felt the silk sliding tantalizingly against her skin. Contrasting with the whole aura was the cheap sunbeam necklace, still proudly around her neck. Steve had frowned at it but said nothing.

Steve ordered a bottle of Barolo that Jess was fairly certain cost more than her rent. They waited for their food.

"You come here with the others?" Jess asked.

"Sometimes. Julie likes the mocktails. Alyssa likes the shrimp. All of them like feeling beautiful and special." He spun the stem of his wineglass. "Relax, it's just dinner."

"Nothing with you is just dinner."

The food was good, the sauce so rich that it made her close her eyes for a second. That pissed her off a little; she wanted the place to be a con. Instead, it was just a genuinely good Italian place that catered to the only people in Akwetanon with any sort of money.

Midway through, Jess felt her clutch vibrate against her thigh. She pulled out her smartphone. Steve's eyes dropped to the device, a flash of irritation crossing his face. "Really?"

"It's Chris," Jess said, meeting his eyes unapologetically as she unlocked the screen.

Chris had sent an image: a meme of Spongebob Squarepants sitting alone in a cartoon diner, staring blankly into a cup of coffee. The text:

me waiting for my girlfriend to get home from her sugar daddy's.

Jess snorted at the gallows humor. Like Steve said... Zoomer shit. World's fucked, all you can do is make memes.

She tapped a response.

deranged. he took me to that Italian place on west main. he's paying. made him get the most expensive thing. veal.

He replied. at work. lyss says hi. doing ok. get home safe tomorrow.

Steve ground his teeth across the table. "I'm dropping hundreds on dinner," he growled, "and you're texting him under the table like a teenager."

"He sent a meme," Jess said. She took a slow, appreciative sip of the Barolo, looking him right in the eye. "Don't pout, Steve. You're the one paying for the meal. Financial support, that's what you're here for, right?"

Steve's face grew red before he realized he was getting angry over a cartoon. "This is a nice place," he sighed. "You look uncultured. I'm trying to help."

Jess rolled her eyes but hid the phone. The words trailer trash dashed across her mind. Maybe there was something to decorum after all.

***

By 10:00 PM, Steve's Stacks was mostly empty, transitioning into the slow, quiet bottom of the swing shift. Chris was wiping down the stainless-steel prep tables in the back when Amanda approached him.

"I brought you an Arnold Palmer," she murmured melodically. Her dark hair was falling out of her braid, framing her open, pleasant face and her dark brown eyes. Chris let himself look for only a second, at her curvy hourglass figure before his eyes locked onto hers.

"Thanks," he said, wiping his hands on a towel to take the drink.

Amanda lingered, her hands nervously smoothing the front of her apron. She looked at his bandaged hands, then back to his freshly shaven face. Her eyes were warm and quiet.

Why can't he see what I see in him? she wondered. Chris was a revelation. She had grown up in a world of harsh, casually abusive men and conditional love. Abandoned by her family, homeless and desperate until Steve scooped her up. She had never known a man who was gentle, who listened, who treated her like something other than a babysitter or a sexual object, who would crash his bike on black ice and bleed on a floor just to hold his girlfriend's hand while she made a deal with the devil.

I hope Jess knows how lucky she is, Amanda thought, and offered up a silent prayer. Maria, if you're listening... I want a family someday. I want children of my own, a home where footsteps on the floor don't mean fear. I once asked you to let Mr. Steve bless me like he did Julie and Lyss and Tara. But you didn't answer that prayer, and I think you were right.

If I could make a family with a man like Chris... I don't think I would ever be afraid to come home.

"You worked really hard tonight," she said softly, tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear and staring at him with devotion. "I'm really glad you came in. And I'm glad you're staying. We're all glad," she overcorrected.

Chris, oblivious, just saw the kindness in his friend's eyes. He let out a long, slow breath, leaning back against the sink. "Thanks, Amanda," he said, offering her a small, genuine smile. "I think... I think I might be okay."

***

The moment Jess walked back through the heavy front doors of Steve's house, she felt the dull throb between her thighs. Full of good food and two glasses of wine, she was loose, she was feeling good, and she was horny. She met Steve's eyes and knew he felt it too.

This wasn't going to be another quick fuck. This was going to be, in the worst and most depraved sense of the word, romantic.

Steve helped her out of her coat, his large hands lingering on the skin of her bare shoulders, thumbs tracing the delicate straps of the emerald silk slip. Jess leaned back into his chest, a soft sigh escaping her lips as she felt the stirring bulge in his slacks.

"Upstairs," Steve murmured against her ear. "Our first night together." He took her hand, almost courteously, and led her up the hardwood staircase to the master suite.

Steve's bed was colossal. Julie and Amanda had tried to describe it to her, but even Jess's most fevered imagination had undersold it. The room smelled like him - cedar, cigar, the clean bar soap he used - and underneath it, faintly, other women's lotions.

Steve pulled a small, orange blister pack out of his nightstand and popped a single blue pill out. He dry-swallowed it unceremoniously. He was in his 50s, about to spend the night with a 21-year-old former track star whose libido had just been awakened. He knew his limits.

"Come here," he commanded softly, unbuttoning his cuffs. "Keep the heels on."

Jess went, heels clicking against the hardwood before stepping onto the plush rug. When she was inches away, tilting her head up to look at him, Steve reached out and slipped the delicate straps off her pale shoulders. The heavy fabric cascaded down her body, pooling in a shimmering verdant puddle around her ankles. She was braless, and the cool air of the room instantly peaked her nipples into tight, hard buds.

Steve's eyes darkened to pitch black as they wandered her frame. "You're perfect," he rumbled with a raw, greedy reverence. He reached out, rough palms sliding up her ribs to cup her breasts, thumbs teasing her nipples. Jess bit her lip and moaned in appreciation.

He stripped off his own clothes; last to go were his underwear, releasing his heavy cock. The pill was already working its magic. Steve was massive, still terrifyingly thick, standing at stark attention against his hairy belly.

Jess's mouth watered to look at it. She let herself disconnect from the world outside this room. Chris, the restaurant, the apartment, all of it faded, consumed by the primitive reality of the man standing before her.

They collapsed onto the bed, hands roaming, mouths meeting and then parting to alight on some other piece of exposed flesh. Jess's panties were gone in a whisper, and Steve worked her open with a thick finger before descending on her with his mouth. Now, away from the stress and tension of the office, she could allow herself to enjoy it. "Oh my God," she whispered. "Oh..." before her back arched and she keened with her first orgasm of the night. Damn, but this man can eat pussy. Like he's starving.

Jess returned the favor, planting a firm kiss on his cock before taking it as far as it could go down her mouth. Steve laid back, hands behind his head, as she bobbed up and down on his thick rod. The taste was musky and tangy, but she savored it - and when she looked him in the eyes, lips popping off his mushroom head, she could see the fixation in his eyes. That thrilled her as much as anything else - his obsession with her body, her mind, her womb.

"Don't make me bust," he whispered. "You know where it belongs. Turn around."

Jess crawled forward onto her hands and knees, spine dipping, her pale, freckled ass lifting into the air. Steve knelt on the mattress behind her, squeezing one ass cheek, then the other. "Like it was sculpted," he muttered, and Jess murmured her thanks.

Steve leaned forward, pressing his hot, broad, hairy chest against her spine, low enough to press a hot kiss between her shoulder blades. "Mine." Then he reached down and aligned the broad head with her slick entrance. Agonizingly, impossibly slow, he entered her.

Jess let out a long, shuddering gasp as the sheer volume of him filled her again. He pressed onward gently, powerfully, his bare cock plumbing deeper and deeper into her body. As he slid in to the hilt and began to fuck her slowly, her body hummed with biological resonance.

Steve was making love to her, Jess realized. She was dully horrified by how right it felt, not like a transaction, but like a lock clicking into place. It felt like his thick cock had been specifically made for her, stretching her walls until she felt that deep, satisfying fullness.

"God, Jess," Steve purred. He held himself deep inside her for a moment, just letting her muscles flutter around him. "Look how perfectly you take me. You were made for this."

He began to move again. He pulled his hips back, dragging that incredible thickness out until only the tip was still inside, then slowly ground them forward again. He rolled his pelvis into hers, his balls slapping against her clit, her tits swaying beneath her as she rocked and sighed in ecstasy.

"Yes," Jess whispered, hands gripping the sheets, pushing back against him. "Oh my God, Steve, it's so deep."

"I'm gonna fill you," he murmured, letting a hand slide under her to grab a swinging tit, pinching the nipple and making her squirm. "Gonna put my baby right there. Make you a mother."

That's what this was, Jess realized. Not fucking. Mating. The breeding kink, the hollow void of her loss, the primal dominance of the man inside her, all coalesced into a beautiful, terrifying heat. She wanted it. Her womb ached for his seed. This was what they were made to do, what millennia of biology had shaped them for. That thought drove Jess higher and higher, completely lost in the natural movements of their contrasting bodies.

Steve kept the slow, grinding rhythm for what felt like hours, worshipping her body with his, making her tremble and whine with every roll of her hips. After a while, though, he let go of her waist and shifted his weight, pushing her upper body down.

"Lie flat," he ordered. Jess let her arms slide out from under her, dropping chest and cheek to the mattress. Steve followed her down, lowering his hairy chest until it covered her smooth, sweat-slicked back, his thick thighs pinning her legs apart. Jess was overwhelmed by the sheer weight of him, a suffocating blanket, enveloped by his heat and mass, utterly vulnerable.

As he began to fuck her again, the angle shifted. Steve was suddenly impossibly deeper; Jess's moans turned to almost panicked whines. It was almost too good, he was filling her and surrounding her and consuming her the way he had always said he would. His thick cock scraped the walls of her cunt with every slow downward thrust.

"Mine," Steve panted, increasing the pace. "My Girl. Finally."

"Yours," she affirmed between gasps. "Your Girl." In the broader sense, it was only partially true. But right now, nothing had been truer. She was his.

Steve's heavy hips ground into her firm ass, driving the head of his cock flush against the roof of her vagina. The envelopment, the friction, the deep, internal mating all overloaded Jess's nervous system.

"Fuck... fuck..." she whispered. "Fuck me, Steve, oh my God."

"What do you want?" he demanded. "Tell me, Jess."

"Put it in me," she sobbed into the pillow. "Cum in me, Steve. Give me a baby!"

Steve let out a wordless roar as Jess came again, her inner walls milking him with rolling spasms. Her body locked up, trembling helplessly as Steve tipped over the edge. He groaned her name, a deep sound of biological conquest as he drove his hips forward one final time and unleashed. Jess gasped at the thick, heavy jets of semen shooting directly into her cervix for a third time that day.

Steve stayed where he was, massive bulk crushing her gently into the bed, wrapping his thick arms around her shoulders like an enfolding blanket. His dick kept her entrance plugged tight, ensuring that his seed had only one place to go. Jess lay beneath him, her body twitching from the aftershocks, feeling his cum pool hot and heavy inside her - exactly where it belonged.

Jess Stockwell closed her eyes, a depraved smile touching her bruised lips. She was going to be pregnant. She knew it in her bones. Today, tonight, some other day... it was coming.

Steve Rossi was going to give her a baby. The horror of that statement had finally given way to peace.

***

Jess started awake at 1:17 AM, or so the clock said.

The house was a sprawling, insulated tomb, the only sound the groaning of the wind outside and the deep, rhythmic rumble of Steve's breathing. Jess was disoriented for a moment, puzzled by the sheer scale of the mattress and the furnace-like heat of the man beside her, before it all came back to her. Steve's arm was draped heavily over her waist, pinning her against his side, but he was out like a light.

Carefully, Jess slid out from underneath his arm. Steve grunted, shifting onto his back, but didn't wake. Naked, her bare feet silent against the hardwood, Jess slipped out of the master suite.

The hallway was bathed in the pale, ethereal light of a full winter moon filtering through the high windows. She padded down the staircase, muscles in her thighs feeling loose, and entered the kitchen. She found a glass and poured herself some water, drinking it down in three long, desperate gulps.

Jess leaned against the sink and closed her eyes. Who am I? she thought, the question echoing in her mind. The last 24 hours were a blur. Just yesterday morning, she had been a desperate, exhausted girl, tallying quarters for laundry, terrified of the encroaching starvation of winter, preparing to flee from the monster that was ruining her life.

Now she was naked in that monster's kitchen. She had taken his seed with a hunger that horrified and thrilled her, and it might already have quickened in her womb. She was wearing his clothes, eating his food, on his arm in a restaurant. She had fought for the right to keep the man she loved, and then enthusiastically submitted to the monster that had broken them down.

Was she a martyr? A pragmatist? A heroine? A whore? All of the above, maybe. But she was Jess Stockwell, and this was her life now. Steve's Girl to survive. Chris's girlfriend to live. But most of all, still herself, whatever that meant now. I am still me. I won't let him turn me into someone else. I am still me.

Restless, her mind spinning with the gravity of it all, she roamed the first floor, then the second, charting out the map of the house, staring at the pictures, the paintings, the awards and small relics that told the broken, incomprehensible story of Steve Rossi.

Who were you, before all this? She wondered. If the story from Monday was a lie... your wife's miscarriage, losing your own baby... what's the truth? Who are you? She had gotten hints, pieces, fragments of his past... but only fragments.

Jess's journey carried her past the fourth bedroom and the dresses, toward the far northern wing of the house. The air grew noticeably colder here. The rich scents and warm lights faded, replaced by the stale, metallic chill of a space closed off and forgotten. Jess rubbed her shoulders, feeling the cold. Does the heater not work over here or something?

Jess paused in front of a heavy oak door at the very end of the hall. It was shut tight, but a thin, freezing draft seeped out from beneath the threshold, washing over her bare toes. She reached out, turning the brass knob. It clicked surprisingly loudly in the silence. The door swung open, the stiff hinges groaning faintly.

She stepped inside. It was a large bedroom, long since stripped of any warmth or life. The space was a graveyard of stacked cardboard boxes, a pair of cedar chests, rolled-up rugs and a dismantled bedframe, all shoved into the corners. Dust motes danced in the pale moonlight that spilled through a single uncurtained window. Steve's house, so carefully curated, seemed to have stacked its detritus up here.

One thing caught Jess's eye. Standing in the far corner, pushed away as if in exile, was a massive, floor-to-ceiling antique mirror, shrouded in a yellowing linen sheet.

Jess stopped in the center of the freezing room, compelled by the mirror. She didn't want to touch it, but found herself moving forward, drawn by a strange, inexorable pull. It was as if the shrouded glass possessed some kind of gravitational field, as if the fabric concealed something that desperately wanted to be seen, the long-forgotten secrets of the house in this freezing mausoleum of cardboard and dust. Jess approached it with the suspended trepidation of a dreamer. The chill of the floorboards seeped into her marrow as a deep, low dread coursed through her blood.

Something about this mirror. Something... off. The very shadows of the room seemed to elongate, stretching across the walls like grasping fingers.

Jess reached out, her pale fingers trembling in the stale air, and gave the linen a tug. The sheet collapsed into a heap of dust at her feet.

The glass was dark, tall, and silvered with age. Jess gazed at her own reflection for a moment - the tangled mane of her fiery hair, the swelling of her lips, her pale, tantalizing curves, the faint track of Steve's seed dry on her thigh. She looked like a sacrifice.

But as she stared, unease began to curdle in her stomach. Out of nowhere, the temperature in the room seemed to plummet. Jess wrapped her arms around her bare torso, rubbing her skin, and furrowed her brow when she saw her breath rising before her. She looked back at the glass.

There now seemed to be something subtly, inexplicably wrong with the reflection. The silvering was mottled at the edges, giving the mirror an aqueous quality, like looking into a stagnant pond. The room seemed deeper and darker behind her, the geometry slightly skewed, the shadows pooling too thick and twisting in eldritch ways, clinging to the corners and multiplying.

Then - just for a moment - there was something else. Jess almost gasped. For a fraction of a second, she thought she saw a darkness over her left shoulder shift - a subtle displacement of gloom, the shape of a person standing just outside her frame of vision.

Her pulse thudding, Jess slowly turned her head, terrified of what she might see.

Nothing. The room was empty. Broken furniture, stacked boxes, and dust.

Jess turned slowly back to the mirror. The moment had passed, the reflection was her own, pale and terrified in the moonlight. A trick of the light. A smudge on the glass. You're still half asleep. But the room was still unnaturally cold, and the eerie, suffocating wrongness pressed against her skin like a physical weight.

Something caught her eye.

There were words carved into the heavy mahogany wood at the bottom of the mirror. They had been almost torn into the edifice, erratic, and viciously deep, scraped in over and over again, as if by a fevered demon.

not my fault not my fault not my fault not my fault

Jess stared at the frantic scratchings, and a chill that had nothing to do with the cold washed over her. She didn't know who had written those words, or why. She didn't know what had happened in this room. But looking at the jagged script, she felt the shape of the guilt, and suspected she knew who it was attached to.

This place wasn't a home. It wasn't a mansion. It was a vault. The bizarre intimacy, the playful banter, the tender lovemaking - it was all a veneer. The gilding to her cage, more smoke and mirrors from an old man with a darker, deeply buried history. She was sleeping with a man who had ghosts, demons, dark wells in his past, an empire built on foundations she couldn't even begin to comprehend.

A shiver wracked Jess's naked body. She stepped back from the mirror, bare feet retreating over the floorboards, and walked out of the room with a fast, unsettled pace. She pulled the door shut behind her, but didn't hear it latch. As it swung back open, she felt a new compulsion to leave it behind. She hurried down the long, shadowed hallway, wrapping her arms tighter, desperate for light, desperate for heat.

Soon she was creeping back into the master suite, still trembling from the quiet dread of the mirror room, needing to be warm again, needing to return to reality from whatever that was, wanting the suffocating reality of the present to burn away the chill of the mysterious past.

She ascended the bed, ascended the body of the sleeping Steve, and found his cock. First her hands, then her mouth, and it began to rise. Steve awoke with a low, rumbling grunt to find her with his glans deep inside her mouth, head bobbing passionately.

"Hands are cold," he muttered. He reached down to touch her torso and his eyes widened. "You're freezing."

"You need to fuck me," she whispered. "New day. Time to hold up your end of the deal."

"Time is it?" he muttered. Jess's eyes flicked to the clock, and she froze.

1:17.

That can't be right.

She shook her head. She must've seen it wrong. Was the mirror room just a weird dream?

Jess climbed atop Steve, not waiting for him to grab another pill. She grabbed his dick, still formidable even partially hard, and fed it into her pussy. "You don't get to rest," she said. "Breed me."

Down the hall, through the open door of the abandoned bedroom, the uncovered mirror glimmered in the moonlight. Just above the frantic confessions of a guilty tyrant, the surface was still, holding only shadows and dust.

If someone had been standing at that spot, they may have seen the distortion of those shadows, felt the vibration of the freezing air, and heard a sound materialize in the silence - the faint, delicate shimmer of a musical laugh, ringing with a phantom joy that the house had long since consumed.

The moonlight shifted, catching and refracting against the sudden, brief glint of round, wire-rimmed eyeglasses, and for just a flash, a silhouette, a girl, peering from the purgatory of the glass.

Then the shadows collapsed inward, and she was gone.

Akwetanon was a frozen, lifeless void at 5 AM on a Thursday. Streetlights flickered against the dark, illuminating the fresh layer of frost that had settled on Lincoln Street.

And for some ungodly reason, Chris thought to himself, here he was. He was still exhausted from the previous day, and he hadn't slept well (imagine that). He had spent dark hours staring at the ceiling, knowing exactly what was happening outside of town. But he didn't let the knowing crush him. He had used it.

Once, he and Jess had been on the track team together. For two years, Jess had braved this exact cold every single morning, pounding the pavement, fighting to keep her mind clear while he had hidden in the artificial warmth of the apartment. Now his old thermals were tight - too tight - around his body, the faded grey hoodie all too thin, his stocking cap incongruously bright and cheerful. On his feet were a pair of worn blue Asics he hadn't worn since he was 19.

Chris took a deep breath and started to jog. This is going to suck.

He was right. Two years of cheap calories, crushing apathy, and physical stagnation had done their job. But he ran nevertheless. Next time, he would get Jess to go with him. She would annihilate him, but she would keep him moving.

Stop, his screaming muscles begged in time with the depression. Go back inside. It's too cold. You're too weak.

Chris told them all to shut up, and kept running

Two miles just about kicked his ass. By the time he was done, he had fallen twice, had to walk six times, told himself "come the fuck on" nine times, and vomited once. But he had done it.

And I do it again. And again, until it's not hard. And again, until it's easy. To just do seemed almost impossible with the fog, but the fog was a liar.

One more step up from rock bottom.

***

At ten o'clock, Steve Rossi's F-350 rumbled against the snow-packed curb outside the apartment complex. The 24 hours were officially up.

Jess sat in the passenger seat, wearing Steve's expensive Christmas coat and the sweatpants she had packed the day before. Her muscles ached with a deep, bruised lethargy, her pelvis heavy with the volume of Steve's repeated claimings. But her eyes were fixed on the small window of the little home she shared with Chris.

Steve reached into the center console and extracted a thick, unmarked white envelope. He dropped it into Jess's lap.

"What's this?" Jess asked.

"Your Christmas bonus," Steve rumbled casually, resting his thick arm on the wheel. "Belated. I take care of my Girls. Consider it, uh... restitution. For the last couple weeks."

Jess stared at the envelope, her throat tightening as shame washed over her. For 24 hours, she had managed to convince herself that she was an equal partner, a negotiator navigating a complex transaction of power and pleasure. She had treated him like a man, and demanded that he treat her like a woman. She had bantered with him, commanded him, demanded he cum inside her.

But the mirror last night - had that been a dream? It felt real, but it was so weird - and the envelope this morning seemed to shatter the illusion. He was paying her for her body. The fact that he did it for all the other Girls didn't change that fact. The envelope made her feel like a whore - a high-priced, heavily invested whore. What was the deal, really, except a contract of prostitution? How could something like that ever be negotiated between equals?

But Jess didn't throw the envelope in his face like she wanted to. She thought about empty cupboards, rent, gas, and the abyss of poverty that had almost swallowed them whole. They needed this money. She had given her pride specifically to get it.

Jess grabbed the envelope and hefted her duffel bag. "My time is up," she said.

"It is," Steve purred contentedly. "For now. We'll work you into the Girls' schedule. I'll be out of town for the next couple days. See you Saturday."

Without saying goodbye, Jess pushed the heavy door open and slid out of the cab, her boots hitting the frozen sidewalk. The truck's massive engine revved, and Steve drove away, leaving Jess standing alone in the freezing morning air.

She climbed the stairs of the apartment complex, feeling much older, almost defeated, used, exploited and dirty. A creeping fear snuck up on her, a fear far worse than Steve.

What if he's gone? Chris had been left alone to sit with the humiliation of what she was doing. He had watched Steve carry her away. He knew she was letting him breed her, surrendering everything he had failed to protect. He faced a future as a permanent cuckold, of watching his girlfriend's belly grow with another man's baby, of endless reminders of just how thoroughly he had failed and been subjugated into the warped system of Steve's harem.

What if the reality had been too much? What if his resolve had finally shattered? What if he had called his parents? What if she opened the door and found an empty apartment and cleaned-out closet? She had sold her soul to protect him, and if he had run... she had destroyed herself for nothing. And if he had run? Well, maybe that was for the best. It would destroy Jess utterly, but he could finally be free of this prison. Only he had a way out; she was damned, doomed, ensnared by Steve's system.

If he's gone... I hope he doesn't forget me.

Jess squeezed her eyes shut and reached for the knob. She turned the brass handle of Apartment 3B, clutching the white envelope of cash in her fist, as she braced herself for the worst.

The first thing that she noticed was that the apartment was... clean, the sharp, clean tang of lemon overriding the old stale odor. The dishes were done. The laundry was done. The countertops were spotless. And atop the kitchen table: a pile of mangled, barely recognizable black plastic and shattered circuit boards. It took a second for Jess to recognize the carcass of the Playstation.

Then Chris emerged from the short hallway. He wore clean jeans, a fresh T-shirt, his dark hair washed and combed; the scraggly juvenile beard was gone, his chubby face teasing the handsome jawline she had fallen in love with in high school. More than the surface changes, Jess could see something in his posture. Less of a slouch, more of a stiffening, like he believed he deserved to be alive.

Most of all, he was here. He hadn't run. A watery sob tore from Jess's throat. Dropping her bag, dropping the envelope, she launched herself into his arms.

"I'm here," Chris said as he pulled her into him. "I'm here, Jess. I'm not going anywhere."

"I was afraid..."

"I know," he said. "But I promised."

They made their way to the bedroom. The bed was made, the heavy blankets clean and pulled tight. They sat together on the mattress as winter sunlight streamed through the frosted windowpane.

"I have to tell you all of it," Jess said. "What happened. Radical honesty."

"You don't have to..." Chris began.

"I do." She squeezed his hand. "It wasn't Beauty and the Beast, I wasn't locked in a tower. He fed me. We talked. He treated me like... like a partner or a girlfriend or something." She swallowed. "And..."

"How many times?"

"Three." She described them. "And... I can't lie to you. It was... babe, it was good. It was really good."

Chris didn't flinch. "I know. You don't have to apologize. It's not like I wanted it to be bad for you."

"But you have to understand," Jess continued. "Even after all that. Even if I'm his in so many ways now... I'm yours first. Nothing could ever make me not yours. Even if I don't deserve you after everything..."

But Chris shook his head. "No. You shouldn't be sorry. Steve was right, yesterday, when he said I didn't deserve you."

Jess bristled. "What? No. Chris, that bastard-"

"He was right," Chris repeated. "I was a ghost. I let you carry everything. I let you freeze. I let you work your ass off while I felt sorry for myself. You gave me everything and I didn't deserve it."

"Chris, you were sick," she whispered. "I saw it. I... you were so depressed..."

"The depression was real," Chris insisted. "Is real. But I used it as a shield. As an excuse. You deserve more than that."

"Fuck deserve," Jess said, a watery laugh bubbling from her lips. "We deserve better, Chris. We always did. Both of us."

"Well, I'm still going to be the man who deserves it," Chris vowed. "Whether I need to or not. I'm done saying sorry. I'm done saying I'll try to do better. I'm just going to do it. And if I fail... I do better the next day."

Jess stared at him, wondering at what 24 hours had wrought. Something had changed. Something had finally changed. As many times as Chris had said he'd step up but hadn't, there was something different about this time. A spark of certainty.

"We saved each other yesterday, didn't we?" she whispered in wonder.

"Yeah," Chris smiled. "I think we did."

"Not completely." They had failed each other, too.

"Enough."

His lips met hers. It wasn't Steve's claiming kiss; it was soft, familiar, and quietly tender. Jess let out a soft, sweet moan against his mouth and wrapped her arms around him again. He pulled her flush against his chest, hands rising to tangle in her fiery hair, as they attacked each other with a sudden hunger. It wasn't the toxic desperation of Jess's attempt on Monday night, or the half-hearted caresses Chris had given her for the last months; it was a rediscovery of territory they had both thought lost.

They stripped in a hurry, then their bodies crashed together, writhing on the bed, her firm tits against his soft chest, his hands skating across her back, squeezing and loving. His mouth danced on her collarbone, then fell to a nipple, as she sighed happily into his hair. Her hands gripped his shoulders as he teased her magnificent tits; she felt the solid warmth of him, the beat of his heart accelerating, the hardness of his cock against her thigh.

Then she laid out before him, soft curves and freckles and the sunbeam necklace against her skin. Chris drank her in, not averting his eyes from the marks on her hips or the red rawness of her pussy. His dark brown eyes dilated as his eyes worshipped her.

Jess leaned up and stroked his cock as it rose. He had gotten hard fast for her, this time.

"You're so beautiful," Chris whispered. He reached to the cheap nightstand; his hand closed around the familiar, crinkling wrapper of a condom.

Jess said, "Wait." Chris looked at her, confused.

She shook her head. "No condom."

"But..."

"No." Jess thought of the torrential flood of Steve's seed, the round bellies of the other Girls. She was Steve's Girl now. The contract was settled. But they had said nothing about this. He could buy her body... but he couldn't dictate what she and Chris did together.

And Chris deserved a chance.

Jess pried the packet from Chris's fingers and tossed it to the floor. She spread her legs and positioned his cock at the entrance to her fertile, already well-bred pussy.

"Maybe," she whispered. "Maybe... it's possible." Her eyes were wide, green and hopeful. Chris's seed probably didn't stand a chance against Steve's. Jess was probably already pregnant. But maybe... maybe...

Chris's breath hitched. "Maybe," he agreed. "Maybe." He climbed atop her, and Jess reached down to guide him in. She hissed as he breached her entrance - bigger than she remembered, but was that just her soreness? He felt fuller, somehow, a body coming online inside her. The sensation as he entered her was incredible, stretching her inner walls beautifully, the soreness of Steve's purposeful fucking replaced with nothing but love.

"You're here," she breathed into his neck as he entered her tenderly. "You're here." The first stroke dragged through Steve's leftover slick and her own; Chris knew what it was and didn't care. When he began to move inside her, it was slow, it was quiet, and it was love.

Terrible, wonderful whispers broke from their joyous mouths as they joined. "You loved it," he groaned, forehead against hers. "You really loved him fucking you."

"Yeah I did," Jess teased him with the truth. "God, Chris, he was so big, he stretched me out so much." They used the fetish, used their desires, because hiding it had almost killed them and this was how they would survive. They would weaponize their captivity and turn it into heat.

Chris let out a grunt and his hips sped up. Jess met him stroke for stroke, fucking back, kissing his cheek, his neck. "Did he cum in you?" Chris asked, voice deep. "Did he fill you up? Did you ask him to breed you?"

"Yes!" Jess cried. "Yes, babe, oh fuck... yes... I asked him to give me a baby..."

She pushed him, he rolled over and then she was atop him. Chris began to thrust upward, setting a steady, passionate rhythm, holding her hips and guiding her. Jess mewled at the new angle. She braced her hands on her boyfriend's shoulders and stared deep into his eyes, grinning as he stared worshipfully up at her. That look was all she wanted.

"Did he fuck you like this?" Chris gasped.

"I fucked him like this," Jess groaned. "I woke him up and told him to get to work knocking me up."

"God, you wanted it so bad," Chris said, hands digging into the flesh of her ass as he thrust into her.

Jess gasped, rolling her head in ecstasy, then leaned forward until her red hair fell around their faces like a curtain. She ground her hips down against him, chasing the friction. "Yeah I did," she said as Chris's big cock moved inside her. "He came inside me so much, babe. I bet I'm already pregnant. I bet his baby is already in me."

"I don't care," Chris said, reaching up to grab and tweak a nipple. "I don't care. You're mine, Jess. You're mine. I love you. My sunbeam."

Those words drove Jess over the edge. She didn't scream; the orgasm didn't tear through her with the violent force that Steve's dominance provoked. Instead, it blossomed, slowly cascading through her in a deep, radiating wave of golden warmth. "Yours..." she gasped. "Yours..." as her climax radiated throughout her body. Her pussy squeezed him tighter as the tears began to fall.

Feeling her spasm around him, Chris let out a ragged, triumphant groan, his own body locking up. He pumped his hips three more times, burying himself deep, and unloaded his seed, a small platoon of contenders to try their conclusions against whatever Steve had left behind. Maybe, they both thought. Maybe.

As Jess slumped against his chest, her arms wrapping around him, she came to a sudden realization.

This was the best sex she had ever had in her life.

It wasn't cope. Sex with Steve had been mind-altering and feral and biological. But this was safety, honesty, home. It was love. It was affirming, reclaiming, two people coming back together after they had almost lost each other. And that meant more than a giant cock and a fat paycheck.

This is the best sex I've ever had.

They lay tangled together for a while, the winter sunlight shifting across the tangled sheets. Finally, Chris pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

"We got work tonight," he murmured. "Swing shift. Julie was pissed you missed trivia night."

"Julie can suck it," snorted Jess. "I guess we gotta get moving eventually. Do we have any of that Folgers left? I couldn't figure out whatever bougie machine Steve had."

"In the cupboard," Chris said, watching with an adoring smile as she padded out of the bedroom.

But as Jess emerged from the hallway, she stopped dead in her tracks. The breath left her as if she'd been punched.

There, against the peeling paint of the living room wall, sat a small, scuffed wooden end table that hadn't been there yesterday.

At its foot sat The Box.

The Box was empty.

Its contents were unpacked on the end table, arranged with quiet reverence: the soft, pale yellow onesie smoothed out flat, the hand-knitted booties side-by-side, the rattle and the blocks lining the edges. And in a little frame, against the wall, was the black-and-white ultrasound, the tiny kidney-bean shape clear at its center. The only image of their son that they would ever have.

On the corners of the table, well away from anything they might burn, sat a pair of cheap white Dollar General candles left over from Christmas.

Jess approached the table, barely believing what she was seeing. For three years, it had all been hidden, tucked away into the corner, never mentioned, rarely opened, sealed away because the agony was too immense to bear. Even unseen, it had hung over them both.

Jess had internalized the loss as the betrayal of her own biology, her body failing at the one thing she had desperately wanted to protect. Chris had internalized it as the confirmation of his inadequacy, the universe declaring that he could never provide for a family. They had shoved the grief down in their bid to survive, allowing it to fester into the toxic rot, the breeding obsession and quiet despair that had nearly destroyed them.

Chris walked up behind Jess and wrapped his arms around her.

Jess's hands came up to cover her mouth. "Why did you do this... you took it all out... when..."

"He doesn't deserve to be in the dark anymore," Chris said simply.

Jess collapsed against him. Chris caught her and lowered them both to the carpet in front of the little table. She began to weep, her shoulders heaving with agonized sobs. Not panicked tears of anger or fear or frustration, but the cleansing tears of a mother finally allowing herself to openly mourn her child.

"I'm sorry," she said, to Chris, to their child that she still dared not name. "My body just couldn't hold him. I don't know what I did wrong..." She reached out to touch the foot of the onesie, gingerly, as if she was afraid it would crumble.

"No," Chris said, pulling her against him. "No, we stop doing this today." He rocked her as she sobbed, as they both sobbed.

"I blamed myself too. I thought it was my fault. I was broke. The stress... we couldn't afford good care or vitamins or any of that... I thought the universe took him away because I wasn't a man yet."

"But you were right yesterday morning. When you told Steve we didn't deserve to lose him. It wasn't a punishment. It wasn't your body, it wasn't my failure. Sometimes... things just happen. The world is a hard place, and bad things happen to good people. It wasn't our fault."

Jess stared at the ultrasound. Not my fault. Her thoughts drifted back to the mirror she had found last night, the words so obviously meant to dispel some ghost. Unlike Steve's manic, guilty scratchings, Chris spoke the healing truth.

"It wasn't our fault." Jess whispered.

Chris let her look at the table for a second as he fished through the kitchen drawers, returning with two cheap lighters. Holding each other's hand, they lit the two candles. The candles caught, casting a soft, dancing light over the small relics. And with that small gesture, the table became a monument as sacred as any ever raised.

"We miss you," Chris said softly.

"We love you." Jess agreed. "And we'll never forget you."

They sat together on the floor for a while, looking at the little shrine, watching the flames flicker. They were battered, caught in the web of a monster, bound to a life they had never asked for. But for the first time in years, they were grieving together, not apart. Grief, locked away, doesn't decay; it ferments, it becomes a suffocating vapor that manifests itself in anger and pain and self-destruction. But brought into the light, laid bare upon the altar, it loses its power to destroy.

Jess sniffed after a while. "We should probably see what's in the envelope."

"Envelope?"

"Yeah, Steve gave me one before he dropped me off. I think it's money." She trod over to where she had dropped it earlier and tore it open - then gasped audibly as her hand emerged with a thick, banded stack of hundred-dollar bills.

She froze. Chris stopped breathing. It wasn't a few hundred dollars... this was...

"Let me see," Chris said. He counted once, twice, a third time.

"Ten thousand," he confirmed. "Holy shit."

"No way," Jess said, gripping the counter as blood rushed out of her head. "You counted it wrong."

"No," Chris said, "no, I thought I was crazy. But it is."

"We can fix the Civic," Jess wondered. The whore-feeling died against the rent-feeling. She might've had to fuck an old man all night, but ten thousand dollars was ten thousand dollars.

"More than that," Chris said, eyes wide. He grabbed her shoulders. "Jess, we're getting out of this dump. I was looking at listings yesterday. I talked to Alyssa..."

"Alyssa?"

"There's an open unit in her complex in East Hills," he said. "Two bedrooms, central heating, in-unit washer and dryer. You could be down the hall from your best friend. Amanda and Brianna are roommates in the same complex. I thought about it before..." He shook the cash. "But this is a security deposit and three months with plenty left over."

"We call," Jess said without hesitation. "And email. We get a walkthrough scheduled before Steve changes his mind."

They looked at the money, then each other. Then they both laughed joyously, a ringing sound that threatened to peel the paint from the walls of the soon-to-be-vacated Apartment 3B.

***

The rest of the day passed in a brilliant blur. They filled up the Civic, drove down to the grocery store, and instead of counting the penny cost of ramen and Wonder Bread, they filled the cart. They laughed in the aisles, stealing kisses like idiots, giddy with the relief of knowing their debit card wouldn't decline.

They ran by campus to get Jess's classes back on the agenda; Chris, after a long swallow, asked if it was too late to register for computer science. The woman at the desk frowned at a sticker that said not in good standing and said it wasn't likely. After a phone call she didn't explain, she removed the sticker and got them registered.

They stopped by Highland Terrace Homes and asked if they could get a walk-through for the next morning. The manager looked at their ages, their faces, and the way they held hands, and decided he had room in the schedule.

Akwetanon's Main Street still had Christmas lights up because the city government couldn't be fucked to do anything on time. The sky was a brilliant, piercing, cloudless blue, and the winter sun bounced off the snowbanks and shone on the frozen river. Chris and Jess walked beneath the lights, fingers laced tightly, swinging their arms. She bumped his shoulder; he bumped back. They joked about anime, gossiped about work, talked about running routes near the new apartment, and allowed themselves to be in love and together.

Akwetanon had tried to freeze them out, it had tried to starve them, it had tried to break them, but here they were.

***

At 4 PM, Chris and Jess donned their matching red Steve's Stacks polo shirts. The bright euphoria of the afternoon had settled into quiet resolve, the uniforms a reminder of the price they were both paying for the day. The cage was still there. Chris was a cuckold, wearing the brand of the man who had conquered his girlfriend. Jess was Steve's Girl, hyper-aware of the likelihood that she was already carrying his child. But they knew what they had chosen.

Chris grabbed the Civic keys, and Jess grabbed her purse. They walked out of the bedroom, shrugged on their coats, and paused by the front door to stare at each other.

In 48 hours, Chris and Jess had gone from utter defeat to a kind of victory that was flawed, corrupted, but no less a victory for that. We might think their defiance pitiful, Jess's protests meaningless after she surrendered her body, Chris's brief show of spine a drop of courage in a years-long ocean of failure. Objectively, it had been too little, too late.

But it had been enough. At the bottom of the abyss, they had chosen to turn around and fight for each other. That choice had saved Jess from letting Steve crush her brilliant fire, and it had saved Chris from losing to the long battle against the fog. If Jess had to surrender more than a piece of her independence, if Chris had to endure the angst of seeing his girlfriend feed herself to the monster, they had saved each other from losing it all.

Here I have told you the story of two children who were not wise, who were not strong or smart or powerful enough to overcome the world, who each failed the other, who lost a great deal and lost more still in the telling of this story. They had traded their pride, dignity and innocence, but what they refused to sacrifice was each other.

There was a defeat. But there was also a victory.

"I love you," Jess said as they prepared to enter their new reality and don their new chains. "Whatever happens."

"I love you, sunbeam," Chris said, a genuine smile on a face that had not known true happiness for too long.

Together, hand in hand, they stepped into the dark.

***

At that moment, Steve Rossi roamed the halls of his house. Jess was gone, leaving only the scent of her skin on his sheets and the echo of her defiance in his kitchen. He had won. He had planted his flag, bred his woman, bent her to his contract.

But he wasn't done with Jess Stockwell. He had plans for her, plans that had developed with every minute he spent with her. She was fire, and maybe that fire was best left unquenched after all.

Steve had a meeting the next day in Chicago to review expansion plans with potential franchisees. Steak N' Shake needed to be knocked off its fucking pillar in Indiana and Michigan. He needed a specific silk tie for the meeting - a dark, blood-red Brioni he wore with his aggressive "expansion" fit - that he hadn't worn in almost a year. He suspected it was stored in an old cedar chest in the storage room in the northern wing.

As Steve turned the corner, he paused. The storage room's heavy door was cracked open. No one went into that room. He had banned the cleaning staff from ever opening that door.

Jess. She was wandering last night.

Steve stepped into the room, his dark eyes bypassing the cardboard boxes and busted furniture to lock onto the far corner. The linen sheet lay pooled on the floorboards, leaving the antique frame fully exposed to the dusty winter light.

The mirror.

"Fuck," Steve breathed. He darted across the room, scrambling to grab the linen and throw it over the glass. He tried to keep his eyes away from the mirror, but he couldn't help himself. The temperature in the room plummeted, the dust motes froze in midair, the shadows in the glass warped...

... and for just a second Steve could see a figure standing behind him. A slim, pixie-cut blonde girl with round, wire-rimmed glasses, a stunningly pretty face that seemed made for laughter - but the face was pale, her eyes so recessed they seemed empty, unspeaking, unmoving, staring at him with a judging, screaming silence that choked the darkness around her.

Steve squeezed his eyes shut and threw the sheet over the glass, hiding the mirror once again. He stood there gasping for a moment, hands planted against the heavy wood of the frame, tracing the carvings he had dug into it so many years ago.

"Not my fault," he muttered. "Not my fault." He retrieved his tie and left the room in a hurry. When the door was shut behind him, he breathed deeply for a minute, feeling his heart race threateningly. Then he shuffled away, willing away his past.

As Steve descended into the living room, tie in hand, he realized he wasn't alone.

Coe sat in the recliner. The blonde enforcer wore a sharp, charcoal-gray suit that made him look almost angelically pale, blank eyes fixed on the dying embers in the fieldstone fireplace. He radiated a frigid menace that would have sent anyone else running for their lives.

"I told you to stop doing that," Steve grumbled. He walked toward the kitchen to pour a scotch.

Coe swiveled his unblinking face towards his boss. "Door was unlocked," he drawled smoothly, Arkansas gone cold. "Is the Stockwell project complete?"

"She's in the bed. There were some snags, but I'm working through them." Steve described what had happened, though he left out the more embarrassing details.

Coe knew him well enough to hear a half-truth. "She made you sit down and haggle," he said, amused, as if ice could be amused.

Steve shrugged. "It's done." He took a sip of the scotch.

"Very well. Things have been going awry in Indiana without me down there. One of our shipments got hit outside Gary."

"Who do you think it was? Disciples?"

"Not their style. And I aim to find out." Coe stood up, smoothing the lapels of his suit. "Now that I'm done scaring waitresses and playing dress-up, can I get back to my actual work?"

Steve smirked. Coe could be so finicky. "You're cleared hot. Take care of the issue."

Coe smiled blandly. "Oh, and don't bother inviting me to the wedding. You remember what happened last time you got sweet on one."

Steve's smirk vanished. The mirror filled his mind.

"By the way," Coe said absently. "I can still remove the boy, if you want. Akwetanon's an accident-prone town. Black ice. Quarries. Empty factories. He was halfway to offing himself already, as I understand. Wouldn't be hard."

Steve looked into his glass. It would be easy. Chris Hallstrom would cease to exist. Jess would be devastated, and with nowhere else to go, she would be Steve's unconditionally.

But then her fire would go out. The defiance would die. She would become another doll on the shelf. And Steve Rossi did not want another doll.

Steve shook his head. "No. We made a deal. I stick to my deals."

Coe rolled his eyes. "Suit yourself. Need me to run down any more pieces of ass, just holler. Call you tomorrow after I find out more about Gary."

He went to the door and paused without looking back. "She's going to cost you more than the last one," he said, a forecast more than a warning. Then he was gone.

Coe didn't understand, Steve thought. None of them did.

Steve looked at himself in the glass. The grey in his hair, the heavy lines around his eyes, the wrinkles. He was 58 years old, he had built an empire on restaurants, real estate, dark money, good investments, and things that would send him up for multiple life sentences if they came to light. He had conquered Akwetanon, it was his fortress, and his empire had wound its way across the Midwest. But his wives had both left him, his children had deserted him, and none of the mediocrities in his corporate structure could ever be what Steve Rossi was.

Coe, Ray Washington, Tommy John, all of them, they looked at Jess and saw just another girl.

But Steve didn't want just another Girl. He saw something more in Jess. Something he recognized in himself. Something he had seen from the moment he had laid eyes on her, reinforced every time she had fought him, yelled at him, stood up to him, showed the backbone that poverty and her mother and her miscarriage and every lever of Steve Rossi's power and the dead city of Akwetanon had been unable to crush.

He needed Jess as she had come to him - strong, determined, resilient, brilliant, refusing to submit. He needed to keep that fire alive.

Otherwise, how could she ever succeed him?
