Marcus woke to the silence of the hotel room. The space beside him was cold, the linens pulled tight and smooth as if she had never occupied the bed. She hadn't left a note.
His phone pings. An email from Liyang including the "Dragon Seal" receipt. It will be the only evidence of their week together.
Marcus stayed in bed for an hour, staring at the ceiling. He was strangely satisfied but still was empty. The embossed business card was on the nightstand.
He had understood what it was for the moment Yan gave it to him. They were expecting his call. The person would arrive at 8 p. m.
The door clicked shut. Marcus did not move from the armchair. He sat with his legs crossed, the heavy terry-cloth robe belted tight, his hands resting flat on the armrests.
On the mahogany desk, the stack of HKD notes sat in the glass ashtray.
"You're early," Marcus said.
The subject moves into the room. He reached back and pulled the pins from his hair, letting the dark mass fall over the shoulders of his silk dress.
He reaches for the thin straps. The fabric slides down his bony shoulders, pooling around his ankles.
He is from Thailand. He is beautiful. His thighs are long and lean, their inner curves smooth where they meet. Between them, his small uncircumcised penis is in darker contrast against the pale skin. His chest is taut, topped by the soft, high-set breasts. The light catches the faint, silvery lines of the surgical scars.
Marcus requested compliant. He stands with his arms at his sides. He is quiet.
"Get on the bed," Marcus says.
The subject crawls onto the linens, lying flat on his back. Marcus disrobes and lays beside him on his side. His hands trace the ribs, the narrow chest, the mounds of the breasts. He uses his mouth and tastes the saltiness. His hands go lower. The physical response is automatic.
The subject rises. He kneels between Marcus's open thighs. He works with a mechanical, rhythmic precision, his throat arching to accommodate Marcus.
"On your back," Marcus commands. "Knees up."
The subject obeys instantly. He lies back, pulling his knees toward his chest, exposing himself completely. Marcus enters him. The contact is a heavy, rhythmic friction. He reaches down. He finds the subject's own hardness and begins to stroke, mirroring the aggressive tempo of his own thrusts. The subject's breathing breaks into a series of jagged, shallow gasps. His release is violent and sudden. Marcus continues his thrusting.
Marcus pulls away. He stands by the bed, his breathing heavy, watching the subject's back rise and fall in the sudden silence. The heat is gone, replaced by the humming of the hotel's climate control.
"Get dressed," Marcus says.
He slides off the bed. He gathers the silk slip, his movements efficient and hollow. He does not look at Marcus. He does not look at the bed.
The door clicked shut. Marcus remains standing in the center of the room. He has achieved the total dominance he sought, but the silence now feels like a physical weight, cold and absolute. He is the Executive Producer of a room that is now entirely empty.
In Shenzhen, the woman is back at the mall in Futian. She stands near the glass railing of the atrium, her eyes wide and observant. She sees a man in a rumpled linen suit staring at a digital directory. She waits exactly ninety seconds. She begins to walk toward him.
"You," she says, her voice a perfect pitch of youthful curiosity, "do not know what you are doing."
The dim light of the laptop screen was the only illumination in the small Berlin apartment, casting long shadows across the faded wallpaper. Outside, the steady hum of night traffic blurred into the background as he navigated the encrypted browser, entering the multi-character hash string that opened the dark website's landing page.
The forum interface was minimal--dark gray text over pitch black, completely devoid of clutter. He clicked the media link near the top of the board, waiting a few silent seconds as the video stream buffered through the relay nodes.
When the video played, the camera angle was tight, framing three figures on a low platform under harsh overhead lighting. A mature Westerner lay flat on his back, his breath heavy against the weight of a Chinese woman seated directly across his face.
Simultaneously, a slender Asian man moved rhythmically behind him, maintaining a steady, deliberate pace.
He watched in silence, the quiet hum of the laptop fan filling the room as the video played through to its conclusion.
In Vancouver, Marcus sits in his home office. The rain is a dull grey against the window.
