Prequel to My Daily Walk

Alan & Gracie: A Prequel to My Daily Walk

By ANutmegman

Friday afternoon

"Mom, Dad, I'm heading to Delaware for a job interview tomorrow. I may be gone for a few days to a week. The interview is on Monday."

"That's great, Alan. What is the company?"

"It's called the Foundation, or just Foundation. I'm not really sure what they do, but they're highly rated by their employees. I'll find out. I'm taking my truck so I don't have to fly and rent a vehicle. I'll be staying in a hotel; they made a reservation for me."

"Good luck and let us know how you make out. Drive safe"

"Thanks, Dad. Hopefully better than my other interviews, which have yielded nothing job-wise yet."

Saturday Morning

"Bye, Dad, bye Mom, I should be back no later than next weekend."

"Drive safe, Alan, and good luck." My mom said.

"Thanks, Mom."

I left, filled the truck with gas, and started the 300-mile trip. Six hours later, I found the hotel, checked in, and went in search of something for an early dinner.

I found a place with a good burger and enjoyed comfort food. I returned to the hotel, changed into my bathing suit, and went for a swim. 40 laps later, I was back in my room and watching TV.Prequel to My Daily Walk фото

Sunday, I drove around the area, starting at the Miles the Monster statue at a racetrack. Kind of strange, yet interesting. I drove some more. I found the Air Mobility Command Museum and spent the next four hours there, finding it very interesting. Pickering Beach was next, and I walked in the sand, enjoying the spring sunshine.

I went out for Mexican food, still sitting by myself as I didn't know a soul in town. A table of girls kept looking at me, giggling and smiling. So I smiled and waved, making them blush. Once done, I drove to the fishing pier, walked to the end, and watched what was around me.

I returned to the hotel, swam more laps, watched some TV, and set my alarms for tomorrow morning.

Monday

I was up just before the alarms, shaved, showered, went down for breakfast, back up to brush, grab my resume, and go. I found Foundation, no "the" before it, parked in the guest parking, and walked to the front door. I took two deep breaths and entered.

I received a guest pass and was escorted to my interview.

At the front desk, "Hi, I'm Alan Moore. I have an interview with Mike Landers at 10 am."

"One moment, Mr. Moore. Please have a seat. Mike will come get you in a few moments."

"Thank you." I sat and waited.

A few minutes later, "Alan?"

I stood. "Yes."

"I'm Mike Landers. Please call me Mike. We use first names for everyone except the big boss, whom most of us call the boss. We find that doing this makes everyone more comfortable."

"Nice to meet you, Mike."

"You came down from Massachusetts?"

"Yes, just outside Springfield. It took me about six hours, with breaks."

"Welcome to Dover, Delaware."

"Thank you."

"Have you looked around the town at all?"

"Yes, I arrived Saturday and did the touristy thing yesterday. There's still more to explore. I like that there is a beach minutes away. Back home, the nearest beach is a 2-hour ride."

"I go running in the sand often when I don't feel like pounding the pavement. Do you run?"

"Yes, I can do about five miles this time of the year, and by fall I'm usually up to 12 or a little more."

"That's similar to my running schedule too."

He started the interview and an hour later said, "Let me give you a tour of the company."

We walked for a while. Showing me all parts of the company.

"Alan, we'd like to offer you a job. You'd be our first employee to work remotely and would need to be on site one week out of every eight weeks. We'd provide you with a laptop, docking station, printer, and pay for your internet and everything.

The week you come down here, you would bring your laptop and connect to a docking station down here that matches what you have at home.

You would report to a team leader and be part of a good-sized team. There is an opportunity to advance based on your performance. You don't need a certain amount of time in any position. If you do well, we'll advance you.

Does this interest you?"

"Most certainly." We stepped back into his office and sat down. He took a piece of paper and set it before me.

"This is what we're offering you to start. You'll be on a 90-day evaluation, and for those first 90 days, you'd have to be on-site for at least a week out of every four. After 90 days, your pay will increase to this." He placed another number in front of me.

"After six months, you'll be enrolled in health care and other benefits. The benefits are excellent.

I've worked here since I graduated from college, and I love it. It's an easy place to thrive, make new friends, and be very productive.

That's our offer. What do you think?"

"I like what I see, and that I can work remotely from home and not have to move. I would, but I love New England. I accept the offer. Thank you very much."

"Great! Welcome to Foundation. Can you start tomorrow?"

"Yes, I planned on staying through the weekend with the hope I would get the job."

"Good, come with me, and I'll introduce you to your team leader. Then we'll do the paperwork."

Knock, knock, and he opened the door. "Hi, Gracie."

"Hi, Mike, happy Monday to you. How are Evie and the boys?"

"The boys are growing so fast, and Evie is great. Thank you for asking. Gracie, I'd like you to meet Alan Moore. We just hired Alan. He will be on your team. He will be working remotely from his home and down here one week out of every four for the first 90 days. Then he will be here one week out of every eight.

Alan will be starting tomorrow. I'm going to leave him with you. Bring him down to lunch and join us in 40 minutes."

"Will do, Mike." Mike left and left me with this very pretty team leader. She wasn't just pretty; she was gorgeous and looked to be around my age. Thinking to myself, Alan, think work, not pleasure. "Alan, walk with me.

This is the bullpen, where you will be working one week a month. We'll have a desk ready for you tomorrow morning. I'll spend some time going over the computer and the current project. I'll introduce you to your sub-team you'll be working with.

You need to be here at 9 am. Because you'll be working remotely, you will need to sign in as a guest."

"Is there a dress code?"

"No, but you must be clean and neat-looking. No grunge. But you don't need a suit or tie. In fact, you'll rarely, if ever, need to wear a tie."

"That's good, as I dislike wearing them."

"Your day ends at 5 pm."

"Do you have any questions so far?"

"No, ma'am, no questions."

"Please call me Gracie. Ma'am makes me feel like my bubbie. Let me show you the cafeteria, which is where we'll have lunch today. You can eat in or out. You can buy food or bring your lunch. But please do not eat at your desk. You may have a covered drink at your desk, but nothing open. Also, this is a no-smoking business. There is no smoking allowed anywhere on the property."

"I don't smoke, nor do I have any tolerance for those who do," I said.

"Good, here is the cafeteria. The food is very good and changes weekly. You have 30 minutes for lunch, plus a 10-minute break in the morning and another 15 minutes in the afternoon. You may schedule the breaks for any time you want. But it is advised to not leave before 5 pm.

Go ahead and take what you want for food. Then wait for me.

I made my food choice, and Gracie waved a pass to pay for us. We were directed to the table where Mike and some other people were sitting.

"Welcome, Alan. I think you'll find the food to be quite good and healthy too." Mike said.

I sat and listened to the conversation.

"Alan, this is Alex, short for Alexandra, and Chris. Andii, short for Andrea, the HR person. That's Carl on the end. They're all team leaders too. I'm the senior team leader. I run my own team, and they, along with the team leaders, report to me.

Alan, as well as the group here, please join Evie and me for dinner at my house tonight at 6 pm. Come casual. That means shorts. Here is my address. No is not accepted. Come hungry. Everyone?"

"We'll be there." I heard.

"Alan?"

"I'll be there too. Can I bring something?"

"Yourself. Just yourself."

"Everyone, bring partners and spouses. All are invited like usual."

"Thank you. I will be there."

We finished lunch; Gracie left without me. I didn't know what to do.

"Alan, come on, I'll introduce you to the big boss."

I followed Mike to the front offices. "Alan, this is Marla. She is the boss's secretary."

"Hi, nice to meet you."

"It's nice to meet you, Alan. Welcome to Foundation."

"Thank you."

"You can go in now, Mike."

"Thanks, Marla."

We walked in. "Boss, this is Alan Moore. He is joining Foundation and will be working under Gracie. Alan is our first remote worker. He'll be working remotely from Massachusetts. Then returning here for one week a month for the first 3 months. Then going to one week on-site every two months."

"Alan, nice to meet you. I'd say you can call me Michael, but everyone calls me the boss. Whichever you are more comfortable with is fine."

"Thank you, sir, and thank you for the opportunity to work here."

"You're welcome. I look forward to seeing you around. Welcome."

"Mike, thank you for bringing Alan to meet me. You both have a good day."

"Bye, boss," Mike said.

I followed Mike out. "It was nice meeting you, Marla."

"Likewise, Alan."

Mike turned to me. "Let's do the paperwork and then you can go relax. My house opens at 5:30, with dinner being served around 6. Arrive early. I think you'll do very well here, Alan." He shook my hand. "Let's do that paperwork."

We finished, "Go and relax, you're welcome at my house for 5:30. Park in the driveway, here is my address."

I entered it in my phone.

"How old are your boys?"

"They're turning 11 in a few weeks."

"How many do you have?"

"Three. Triplets. Levi, Dakota, and Noah."

"I can't wait to meet them. I'll be there for 5:30. Thank you, Mike." We shook hands, and I left.

I had an idea and went in search of a sporting goods store. Finding one, I bought a new football and a pump to inflate it. I left it in the truck for later, returned to the hotel, and swam more laps.

I showered, changed into clean shorts and a polo, and dabbed on a little cologne. Then I went to find a florist and bought some flowers.

I parked in Mike's driveway, grabbing the ball, pump, and flowers. I rang the doorbell.

A woman answered. "You must be Alan. Welcome to our home. I'm Evie, Mike's wife and mom to the three boys."

"Hi, nice to meet you, Evie. These are for you. Thank you for welcoming me to your home."

"They are beautiful, thank you so much. Come in; the boys and Mike are out back. Mike just started the grill. What else do you have?"

"Just a little something for your boys."

She put the flowers in a vase and brought me out back. Mike wasn't there. "Boys, come here for a moment."

"Boys, this is Alan. He works with Dad at the shop. Alan, this is Dakota, Levi, and Noah."

I looked at each one as she said their name. I noticed a slight difference between them. Now, to remember that and their names too, I thought.

"Hi guys, this is for you. Do you guys play football?"

"Not yet," Dakota said.

"Would you like to learn?" I said.

"Yeah," All three said.

"Alright then. Please call me Alan and give me patience to remember who is who, okay?

Take the ball out of the box. This goes in the end of the pump and is inserted into the ball's hole. Noah, why don't you pump it up?"

He pumped. "Stop, Noah. Levi, feel the ball. You want it a little firmer. Give it another pump, Noah. Feel it now, Levi." He did. "It's full."

"Now, Dakota, take the pin off the pump. It's small and fragile. Ask your mom to keep it somewhere safe for you."

I looked back, and Evie was watching us. "Mom, can you keep this somewhere safe so we don't lose it?"

"Certainly, Dakota." Evie said.

"Okay, guys, where does the box go? You can't leave it on the floor."

"I'll put it in recycling," Levi said.

"We'll be out back waiting for you." We went out back. Levi returned moments later. "Do you know how to hold a football?"

We sat on the grass, knees to knees, and I told them a few things to start.

"Can we try playing catch?" Dakota said.

"Let's form a square, toss the ball to the person to your right. Don't be upset if you can't pass immediately; it takes some time to get used to holding and controlling the ball."

We tossed it around for a bit. "Can you teach us how to catch it better?" Noah said.

Mike came out. "Can I join you guys?"

"Dad, Alan taught us how to throw. We need practice, but we're getting it. Now we need to learn how to catch." Levi said.

I showed them. "Do you play, Mike?"

"I played in high school. It's been a while."

"Mike, go out and throw me the ball. Guys, watch how I catch it."

Mike threw the ball, and I caught it with ease. "Here's what we're going to do. Dakota, stay with me. Levi, go halfway between your dad and me, and Noah, go to your dad. You guys throw to your brothers occasionally, giving it to your dad and me. Go."

I threw to Mike, and we went up and back. With the boys in place, I gave Dakota the ball. "Throw to Levi."

They did just that, and from their smiles, we had a hit. Two guys joined us. "Mike, Evie said, the food is coming out to be grilled. Elias and I will take your place.

Hi, I'm Chris, and this is my partner Elias."

"Hi again, Chris. I met you quickly at lunch. Nice to meet you, Elias. I'm Alan, the new hire. Welcome to the game. Do you know the boys?"

"Oh yes. Hi guys. Are you ready to play?"

"We're just playing catch right now. I just taught them to throw and catch. So nothing rough."

We tossed the ball around until Mike called us in for dinner.

At the table, "Guys, this was fun. Maybe someday, I'll get to play ball with you again."

"We hope so, Alan," Noah said.

It was an enjoyable evening. I returned to my hotel room; sleep came fast. The week went by quickly.

"Alan, come to my office when you are done." The office text said. It was from Gracie.

I closed up and knocked. A finger was held up. I stayed outside. She motioned me in.

"Have a seat, Alan." Fear ran through my veins.

"Am I being fired?"

"No, no, sorry to scare you like this. No, your work has been very good. You're definitely not fired.

I was just curious when you return home?"

"I was thinking tomorrow or Sunday. I'm not sure yet. I don't know what I would do tomorrow if I stayed."

"How about if Alex and I gave you the grand tour of the area?" She was smiling a beautiful smile.

"I would love that. How about I drive so I can learn the area?"

"That will be great. How about if you pick us up at my place at 10 am tomorrow?"

"Perfect. Thank you. I'll be there."

"Here is my address."

I returned to the hotel smiling. I called my parents and updated them. They were very excited for me. They said they were headed to North Carolina with friends for a few weeks. They stocked the fridge for me, so there was food when I got home.

I picked up Gracie and Alex at 10 am. Both dressed like me in shorts, shirts, and sneakers.

"Good morning, ladies."

"Good morning, Alan."

"Who wants the front passenger seat?" I asked.

"Can't we both sit up front?" Alex asked.

"I don't know how to put the middle seat up and down. I'll figure it out for the next time I return. I promise."

"I'll take the front," Gracie said.

I opened the door for her, telling her where to step and what to hold onto. "Go ahead, I'll catch you if you fall." She got in, and I opened the back door for Alex, telling her the same.

"Where to?" I asked.

They took me all over the place, and the three of us talked up a storm. We did a small lunch and a nice, sit-down dinner.

"Thank you both for the enjoyable day. I feel like I have new friends down here."

"You do have new friends down here, Alan. We may be your boss's now, but we're also friends. Mike said you were a Boy Scout?"

"Yes, Eagle Scout. I learned a lot in scouting that I use every day. It's a great program to teach life skills."

"Maybe we should call you Boy Scout?" Alex said.

"I can live with that. But I prefer Alan. My given name."

"Do you want to do one more thing after dinner?" Gracie asked.

"I'm game."

"Come on then."

"I have to pay for my meal."

"It's all taken care of. You're good, Alan."

"Thank you. That was unexpected."

We went to Pickering Beach, took off our shoes, and walked in the sand.

"You were really good with Mike's boys yesterday."

"I'm pretty good with kids. My parents say I still am one at 22. How old are you both?"

"I'm 23," Alex said.

"I'm 23, too," Gracie said. "When do you turn 23?"

"In a few months." We returned to the truck. I took out a towel, and we cleaned off our feet. "Thank you both for a very enjoyable day. Tomorrow I return home and will set up the laptop with the docking station and everything. I'll call you first, Gracie, so you can help me connect. I will return the first week of May, probably on that Saturday."

"Hey, Boy Scout, why don't you drop me off at my place?" Alex said.

"Direct me," I said. I pulled in front and went to get out to open her door.

"I'm good, Boy Scout. Thank you for the nice day, and welcome to Foundation. I'll see you when you return in a few weeks."

"Bye, Alex." Both Gracie and I said at the same time.

"Back to your place now," I said.

"Are you in the mood for an ice cream?" Gracie asked.

"I'm always up for ice cream. Direct me."

"Turn right, then another right. Is this your truck? Keep going."

"Yes, two summers ago I worked my ass off for a neighbor. He sold me his new truck for that summer of hard work plus some money. He realized he needed something bigger to tow his camper. He worked me hard too. He got his money's worth, and I have this nice truck."

"Left here, the store on the end, over there." She pointed to the right.

I parked and opened her door for her. Offering my hand to help her down. She took my hand and smiled at me.

We each had a cone and talked more. She was so pretty. But she's my boss, so I have to behave, I was thinking. We were talking, and I was looking into her eyes.

I smiled at her, and she smiled back. "What flavor do you have?" I asked.

"Peppermint. Want a taste?"

"No, thank you. Not a favorite of mine. I have raspberry chocolate swirl. It's delicious. Want a taste?"

She shook her head yes. I tilted the cone her way, and she gave it a lick. A seductive lick with a smile. She had me. I'll remember that lick for a while. It's burned into my brain.

"Yum, that's good." She said.

"Uh, yes, it is." I was thinking, come on, brain, kick back in. She's your boss. Don't screw this up.

I took her back and set a way point in my GPS and contacts. I walked her to her door.

"This was fun. We'll have to do this again someday." Gracie said.

"Yes, thank you again. I would love to."

"When you get in the next time, text me. Here's my number." She took my phone and entered her number.

"Do you want my number?"

"I have it already."

"Oh," I said.

"I have all my team's numbers."

"Oh, that makes sense. I, uhm, thank you again. I think I'm going to like this job very much. Uhm, I'll talk to you again next week."

"Safe travels home tomorrow, Alan. I'll talk to you on Monday."

I pulled back and returned to my truck. We waved at each other. I returned to the hotel.

Back in my room, I turned on my laptop to a porn site and jerked off. I knew there was no way I'd get to sleep otherwise.

I returned home to an empty house. I set everything up and called Gracie. She walked me through a bunch of things and said she'd be watching me and to call her with any issues.

Six months later

"Hi Alan, can I talk to you for a moment?"

"Sure, Mike." I saved my work, paused the computer, and went to his office.

"Have a seat."

"First, Evie and I would like to invite you to dinner at our house tonight."

"You know, you don't have an obligation to feed me when I'm in town. I do appreciate it, though, as eating out at restaurants can get to be a drag. I brought my Jetboil and a good cooler and have been cooking off the tailgate of my truck a few nights a week."

"Come to the house. Evie and the boys want to see you again."

"Sure, thank you," I said.

"I've heard that you have had some requests from other companies offering you a job?"

"Yes. I don't know how they even found me. But yes, there are a few that want me to come and interview with them."

"Are you going to?"

"I don't know. I like it here, and I like you all. But those companies are in New England and much closer to where I live."

"Alan, your work has been excellent. You have a bright future here.

Carl just gave us his notice. His wife is homesick and wants to return to Wyoming. So they are moving when their house sells.

I'd like you to replace him. Taking over his team and get a substantial raise. This would be your new salary."

He showed me a piece of paper with a much bigger number on it. I looked at him and then back at the paper.

"This is real? I've only been with the company for 6 months."

"Do you remember when you were interviewed and hired. I told you that advancement is based on performance, not time on the job. You deserve this."

I looked at it again. "I guess I'll email those places and tell them no thank you," I said, smiling.

"So, you'll stay?"

"Yes, thank you. Hmmm, maybe I should rent an apartment down here. I have to think a month's rent might be around what I pay for a week in the hotel."

"We can talk about that at dinner. We might have some ideas for you.

Starting tomorrow, Gracie will be showing you what will be expected of you as a team leader. You'll start with a team of 10 people and grow from there based on your performance. Congratulations!"

"Thank you. I can't believe this. I wasn't expecting this."

"Go finish the day and I'll tell Gracie. Do you want to stop by your hotel to change or come straight to my house?"

"I think I'll change into shorts. Thank you, Mike." I stood and shook his hand. "Thank you." I left and returned to my station.

A short while later, I felt a hand on my shoulder and a voice in my ear, "Congratulations, Alan. Welcome to being a team leader. Tomorrow, I'll start showing you a few things. By the time Carl leaves, you'll be ready to replace him. You're going to do great."

"Thank you." Was all I could get out. My brain was stuck on the sound of her voice and the feel of her breath in my ear. I'll have to ask Mike if there is dating within the company and at what level it is acceptable. I hoped it would be at a team leader level. But her being my boss, I knew, was not right.

"Have fun at Mike's tonight."

"Thank you, Gracie."

At the end of the day, I zipped over to the hotel, changed, and went to Mike's house.

Evie answered the door. I presented her with more flowers. "These are for you."

"You don't have to bring me flowers every time you come over."

"You guys feed me; I have to do something. Plus, you deserve them. Thank you for having me."

"Come on in. The boys are in the back waiting for you."

I went out back, high-fived the boys, and we threw the football around. I brought a pad and pencil and started showing them game plays and strategy.

"You know, guys, I think you're ready to play a game. We need to find an opponent. I have an idea. Let me go talk to your dad. I'll be right back."

"Hey Mike, would you be interested in playing some touch football on Saturday? Maybe get Chris and Elias? Play against us four?"

"Are they ready?"

"I think so."

"Let me call Chris. I'll let you know. Have them wash up; dinner will be served in a few minutes."

"Guys, let's go wash up. We may have a touch football game this Saturday. Us four against three adults."

"Alright!" They said.

We washed and sat at the table.

"What are you four smiling about?" Evie asked.

"We're going to play some touch football against Dad, Chris and Elias on Saturday. Us and Alan against them."

She looked at me. I was grinning too. I started eating. I saw Evie nod at Mike. Something was up.

I took a drink. "What's up? What was that nod?" I said.

Mike nodded at Evie.

"Alan. We have a big house. We have four spare bedrooms. We'd like to invite you to stay here when you are in town, rather than at the hotel. We have all talked about it and want you to stay here." Evie said.

I was floored. I was still absorbing the raise and promotion. This caught me off guard again. I was quiet, taking another bite. I looked at Evie, who was nodding. Then at Mike, who was doing the same. Then at the boys, who were also nodding.

Suddenly I was filled with emotion. I held up a finger and walked out to the backyard.

A few moments later, Evie appeared in front of me.

"Alan, you belong here. We all like you a lot. You're so good with the boys. Please say yes." Evie said.

I looked at her. Still processing the invitation. I nodded. "Yes, thank you."

She hugged me, and soon the boys were too. "Thank you." Was all I could get out. "I need to finish eating." Got everyone laughing.

"Consider the little turnoff near the garages your parking spot from now on," Mike said.

"Thank you," I said again. "Is there a place to go roller skating around here?"

"I don't know. We can check after dinner." Mike said.

"Do you guys know how to skate?"

"We've never been."

"Do you know how to ice skate?"

"We've never done that either."

"Let me look after dinner. Maybe after football, we can all go skating. I'll teach you. Do you and Evie skate?"

"We haven't since we dated."

"Count us in," Evie said.

"I'm paid at the hotel for the week. Would it be okay if I stayed the next time I come down?"

"Yes, it's perfect, Alan. Here is a key to the house." Evie said.

I clipped it to my keys. "Thank you all. It's been quite the day. I think I'm a bit in shock from everything."

"That's understandable," Mike said.

"Oh, uhm, I have a question for you, Mike."

"Sure, ask."

"Uh, okay, here goes. What does the shop think about its employees dating?"

He looked at me, smiling. "I knew it. We don't suggest it from an employee to a leader. But two team leaders would not be an issue."

I knew I was smiling. "You knew we were attracted to each other?"

"Yes, you and Gracie had that look. We both knew you wanted to be more than friends." Evie said.

"So, it would be okay if I asked her out?"

"Yes, but wait until after we announce it tomorrow. Then it's okay."

"Uh, with me being here, is that a problem?"

"Dating, no; bringing her back here for an overnight. Not yet." Evie said.

"Gracie has a condo. Overnights there are no issue and would work out better there." Mike said.

"I haven't even asked her out yet."

Evie smiled. She knew something.

"If I asked her out after the announcement tomorrow, would it be okay to ask her to watch the football game and to come skating with us? Would that be okay, guys?"

"Yes." All three said.

"Thank you. I don't even know if she'd want to go out with me."

"She will," Evie said. "Chocolate pie for dessert. Does everyone want some?"

"Dessert was excellent. Thank you so much for dinner and everything." I said. "I think I'm going back to the hotel and calling my parents with all the news.

"I'll be back Saturday morning for football and skating if I can find a place. Mike, I'll see you tomorrow. Thank you all again."

Mike walked me out. "Are you okay?"

"I'm just a little overwhelmed. I'll see you in the morning."

I drove back to the hotel, parked, and sat on the tailgate. I called my parents.

"Hi Alan, how is Delaware?"

"It's considerably warmer than home, that's for sure. I have some news."

"We have news too. Do you want to go first or us?"

"You guys first," I said.

"We bought a house in North Carolina. southern North Carolina. We're going to be moving down there immediately"

"Oh, that's great. Uhm, will you be selling the house?"

"No, son, we're keeping the house for you to live in. You'll be in charge of keeping it running and up to date, paying the taxes and whatever else is needed." My Dad said.

"Oh, wow. Something else on this incredible day."

"Incredible, how?" My mom asked.

"It started with me being promoted this morning and getting a large raise. Then I had dinner with Mike, Evie, and the boys. They offered me a room in their house to stay in while I am down here. So I don't have to live in a hotel for a week. I just came from there. They invited me to dinner and told me.

It's been an incredible day. My promotion will be announced at the shop tomorrow morning. I can't believe it."

"Wow! Alan, that's great news!" Both parents said. "Congratulations! We're both so proud of you."

"Thank you. I'm in shock. Oh, a friend just drove up." I watched Gracie drive up and park next to me. She got out and was standing beside me, just listening. "I'll be home on Sunday. Love you both."

"Love you too, Alan. Drive safely on Sunday."

I ended the call.

"Hi," I said. I slid over and patted the tailgate for her to join me.

She couldn't get up. I jumped down and lifted her up. She was light.

"You're strong, you lifted me so easily. Hi, Mike called me. He asked me to check on you. Said you were in shock."

"Yeah, and my parents just surprised me too. It's been quite the day." I said softly.

"What did your parents say?"

"They bought a house in southern North Carolina and are keeping the house, and that I was in charge of maintenance, keeping it running, taxes, and everything. They're moving immediately and want to be out before it snows."

"Is that a good thing?" Gracie asked.

"I think so. I've spent a few weeks without them in it. It's going to be an adjustment being there alone. Then, while down here, Mike and Evie offered me one of their spare bedrooms. So I don't have to stay in the hotel anymore.

All this at once. I'm trying to process it. Are you okay with me becoming a team leader too?" I said.

"Alan, I'm thrilled. You're going to be excellent. You're so good at everything."

"Thank you. I asked Mike a question and promised him I'd wait until tomorrow, after the announcement, but you're here unexpectedly now.

Would you be interested in going out with me?" I was looking into her eyes as she was looking into mine. We both knew there was an attraction there.

"Yes, I'm very interested in going out with you. I have been since I met you, but we couldn't take it further than a silent interest as leader and employee."

"I know. I doubt I'll get to sleep tonight, as I'll be playing it all over in my head. Especially you saying yes."

"Would you like to take a walk, Alan?"

"Yes. Where?"

"There is a path behind the hotel that goes to the beach."

"I've been driving around and parking this whole time. The hotel never told me."

"Sometimes when the beach parking is full, I'll park here and walk the trail in. Come on, I'll show you. Could you help me down, please?"

I grabbed her waist, lifting and lowering her easily. She took my hand and led the way.

We walked, sat watching the waves, and talked into the darkness.

Someone approached us, shining a light on us. "Folks, you're not supposed to be on the beach after sunset. I'm going to need you to leave."

"Yes, sir, sorry, we didn't know," I said.

"Can you see?"

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone, turning on the flashlight. We walked down the path back to the hotel parking lot.

"Gracie, this was so nice. Thank you for stopping by. The boys and I are playing Mike, Chris, and Elias on Saturday morning in their backyard. Touch football, that is. Would you come and watch?"

She looked at me. "Yes, I will be there. I'll have to decide who to cheer for."

"That's easy. The boys and me." I said, smiling. "Do you know how to roller skate?"

"Yes on the cheering and yes on the skating."

"I'm taking the boys and everyone skating after the game Saturday. Will you join me? The boys said it was okay to invite you. It will be their first time skating."

"Yes, count me in for the whole day." She put her arms around my neck as we had our first kiss.

We pulled apart, then were together again for another. My hands slid down her back, pulling her closer to me.

We separated. My heart was beating fast. I felt alive for the first time in my life.

We pulled apart. "Would you want to get together on Wednesday for dinner and another walk?"

"Yes, very much so. But I need you to come to me tomorrow afternoon and just talk. That will be the official time you ask me out."

"Yes. I am forcing myself to let you go home. I'll see you tomorrow. Thank you for stopping by. You are the frosting on my day."

"I'm happy to be the frosting. When the time comes, you can lick me up." She kissed me quickly, got in her car, and left, waving at me.

Her comment left me with an image burned into my brain. I went up to my room, turned off the lights, and got into bed. "What an amazing day," I said to no one.

I got up, washed up, and went to sleep.

I did sleep, waking with memories of amazing dreams.

At the shop, I was working in the pen when an announcement started.

"May I have your attention, please. We would like to thank Carl for his dedication and work as a team leader these past few years. He is moving to Wyoming, and everyone here at Foundation wishes him all the best.

Since Carl is a team leader, we have promoted someone to his position.

Please join me in congratulating Alan Moore on the position of team leader!"

Screams and clapping erupted in the pen. Everyone came over to congratulate me. I didn't even realize that many people knew me.

The other team leaders came up to shake my hand and congratulate me. Mike was the last one.

"Did Gracie make you feel better last night?" He said.

"Yes, thank you. I'm still in shock." He pulled me aside. "My parents told me they are moving to North Carolina, and the house is mine to live in and take care of." Then, more softly, "Gracie showed up while I was talking to them. She and I talked for the next few hours. Thank you."

"Listen, we're all going out to dinner tonight, us five and the team leaders. Please join us."

"Where?"

"The Beer Garden. Gracie will pick you up at 5:30; be out front."

"I'll be ready. Mike. Thank you. I'm still a bit overwhelmed about everything."

"A lot has happened in the last 24 hours. It's okay to be overwhelmed. I'll see you at dinner."

The day ended, and I zipped back to the hotel. I changed and was out front as Gracie pulled up.

"Hi, thanks for the ride."

She stopped the car and got out. She came to my side, pulled me to her for a kiss. Then handed me her keys. "Hi, you drive."

"Wait, another kiss, please."

Her arms went around my neck, mine around her waist. A long kiss. "Come on, we're expected."

I kissed her nose, went around, and adjusted the seat. "Where am I going?"

We pulled in, parked, and went in, hearing claps. "Geeze, I'm going to get a complex if this continues," I said to everyone, creating laughter.

I sat, and we all talked. The boys interrupted. "Excuse me," Dakota said. "Alan, can you play pinball?"

"I think so. Where?"

They led me to a pinball game. I dropped my only two quarters in and played a game. "Tell you what, guys, if you can beat that score, I'll take you out for ice cream before I leave on Sunday." I snapped a pic. "Challenge on."

I returned to the table.

"What did you challenge them?" Mike asked.

"I took a pic of my high score and told them if they beat me, I'd take them out for ice cream before I leave on Sunday."

"Is that just for the boys or anyone?" Gracie asked.

I looked at her. "Anyone. Anyone who shows me a higher score than mine, and I'll take everyone out for ice cream."

Gracie cracked her knuckles, got up, and joined the boys.

"My money is on Gracie," Carl said.

"Mine too," Andii said.

"What happens if they lose?" Chris asked.

"We didn't actually discuss that. I guess someone else takes us out for ice cream."

The food came, and the boys returned. Then they were at the pinball machine again for one more play.

Gracie came back with a big smile on her face.

"It looks like you're buying ice cream from the look on Gracie's face, Alan."

"I need proof."

She showed me her screen. "She beat me." Then the boys returned smiling too, showing me Levi's score. "He beat both of us. Ice cream on me. Save room for dessert tonight! Great job, Levi!"

"Wait, you can tell us apart?" Dakota said.

"Yeah, can't everyone?" Pointing, I said, "Dakota, Noah, Levi, right?"

They nodded. "You guys shuffle; I'll turn around and close my eyes. Let's try again. Tell me when you're ready."

"We're ready."

I looked at them, pointing, "Noah, Levi, Dakota."

"You are correct, Alan," Evie said.

"Let's go get ice cream!" The boys said together.

"I'm game. Everyone?"

"Me too," Gracie said.

"We're in, let's go."

"Wait, the bill hasn't come yet. Let me pick it up."

"It's already been taken care of. But the ice cream is on you." Mike said.

"You guys, thank you."

"Can we ride with Alan and Gracie?" Noah asked.

"Do you have 3 seat belts back there?"

"Yes. Mike?"

"They're yours for the trip."

"Okay, guys, squeeze in. Direct me, Gracie, as I have no clue where I am or where to go"

"You guys okay back there?"

"We're great; let's go," Levi said.

We pulled in and parked. Gracie had my hand. Everyone went first, then I pushed Gracie in front of me, and I paid for them all.

We stood around, talking.

"When did you guys become a thing?" Alex asked.

"A thing?" Gracie said.

"Okay, you're holding hands. What do you want to call it?"

"We're together as of right after Alan's promotion announcement."

"Aha, okay, Boy Scout, do not hurt my best friend."

"I have no intention of doing that, Alex. If I did, those three would beat me up. They like her too." Their heads were nodding. I smiled.

"So, are you adults ready to play some touch football Saturday morning?" I said to Chris, Elias, and Mike.

"You do realize that Chris and I are the same age as you, right?"

"I thought you were older. Sorry. So, you're a kid like me, then. That makes this more interesting." I said.

"I played football in high school," Elias said.

"So did I," Mike said.

"Ooh, this will be very interesting."

"Maybe to make this more interesting, I'll join Mike's team," Carl said.

"Alrighty, four against four. This is going to be fun. What about roller skating? Who has never been?"

"I haven't," Elias said.

"Me either," Andii said.

"We'll be helping you both and the boys. It's a blast." I said.

"So, have you guys, you know?" Alex asked.

"Alex, the boys are only 11. Not a suitable subject when they are around. Can it, please? Plus, it's none of your business." I said.

Mike said, "Come on, boys, school tomorrow. I'll see you all at work tomorrow."

"Thanks for the ice cream, Alan." The boys said together.

"You're welcome," I said as they left.

"Gang, this has been so much fun. Thank you. We'll see you in the morning."

"We?" Alex said.

"Yes, Alex, we." I took Gracie's hand, opened the door for her, and we drove out. Of course I was going in the wrong direction.

"You're going the wrong way, you need to turn around," Gracie said.

I did a you-e and went by them again.

"What is it with Alex?"

"She gets jealous very easily. She is my best friend, but I don't trust her with much. I notice that she always wants what I have, like you now. She should calm down once she gets used to us being an us."

I reached over for her hand.

"Can we do something tomorrow after work? Even if we just walk on the beach again?"

"I'd like that. Why don't you follow me home after work. Bring a change of clothes and a bathing suit. We have a hot tub and pool."

"Hot tub, sold!"

I pulled in near my truck. Getting up, we got together. In the fading sunlight. We looked at each other. Nose to nose. Little kisses.

"I don't want to leave," Gracie said.

"I don't want you to leave." I took her in my arms, hugging her close.

"I'm not ready to sleep with you."

"I know," I said. "But I can hold you like this for a little while."

"I like this. I like you, Alan."

"I like you too, Gracie. I have for a while."

"I know. I could tell by the way you looked at me. What would you have done if you didn't get a promotion?"

"I don't know. I may have just asked you or maybe left to get another local job so I could ask you out. I may have lasted another few months, if that. But this is better."

We kissed again in the now dark parking lot.

"I should go. I'll see you in the morning. We'll get together the next few days after work and all day Saturday. Watching you leave is going to be so hard Sunday."

"Think about tomorrow. Good night." We kissed again, and I forced myself to pull away and walk her to her car.

I watched her go.

I pulled out my phone, looking for local pharmacies. Finding one still open, I raced to my room to grab my keys. Then back to my truck and to the pharmacy.

"We close in 15 minutes, sir."

"I'll only be here for a few minutes," I said.

I found the condom aisle. Holy crap, there are a million types.

I went to the pharmacy window looking for help. Of course, a female pharmacist.

"How can I help you?"

"I'm so embarrassed to ask this, but I need help choosing a condom. The selection is huge compared to what I have back home. I could be here for hours. Help, please?"

"Sure, I'll meet you in the aisle."

She came out, explaining the differences. My head was spinning.

"What brand does your boyfriend use?" Thinking the question would be quick.

"I'm a lesbian."

"Your girlfriend is so lucky."

"Thank you. When I was in college and trying sex with guys, I liked this brand best."

"Thank you so much. Uhm, maybe I should get 2 boxes just in case."

"Your girl is lucky. Too many guys just assume their date is on the pill. They don't think ahead."

"Thank you very much for your help. It's been an amazing week, and I didn't think I'd be dating this girl. This amazing girl. So I'm here just in case tomorrow night's date progresses. Thank you again."

"Good luck and good night."

I paid and went back to my hotel room.

The next day ended, and Gracie was waiting by my car. "Follow me."

I followed her, then needed to hunt for a place to park. I ended up a long way away.

I walked over to where she was waiting.

"Where did you park?"

"Tennessee, I think. Way down there." I said while pointing.

She took my hand, leading me to her condo.

"I've never been in a condo before. This is very nice."

"I wanted a place of my own, but without a yard to take care of. There's a crew that takes care of it and more."

"I love yard work. Picking up leaves does get tedious, but planting in the spring and seeing your work sprout into flowers and plants is very rewarding.

Plus, I now have to take care of my parents' house, which I do most of the time now. They're moving to North Carolina soon.

Sorry, I told you that already.

Have you ever been to New England?"

"No, I've been south, but never more north than New York City."

"You need to come up. New England is beautiful and steeped in history. I love the mountains, lakes, the coast, the cities. All of it. There's so much to explore. So much I haven't seen. I think you'd love it. It's so beautiful. I'd love to explore it all with you."

"Maybe one day. For now, I've been thinking all day about our kiss from last night."

"Me too. I dreamed about you last night. More than my dreams in the past."

She came up to me. We kissed. A soft, quiet kiss. "Go change. The bathroom is on the left."

I turned, and she slapped my butt, surprising me.

I changed into shorts, a polo that showed some muscle, and sandals.

I returned, coming up behind her, kissing her ear; my arms went around her waist. I whispered, "What are you making?"

"Just spaghetti and meatballs."

"Can I help?"

"Go put on some music and then return."

"I'll be back."

She had pictures of Minnie Mouse and some other Disney characters. Some old vinyl records, CDs, and even cassettes, and a player for them all.

I put on a CD of Marvin Gaye. Letting it play softly in the background.

I returned to her, humming in her ear.

"Let me wash my hands. It needs to cook for around 40 minutes."

She washed in the sink, dried, then came to me.

"You like Minnie Mouse?"

"Yes, I hope to go to Disney some day. I've never been."

"I went when I was younger, with my parents and sisters. It was fun and I hope to return some day." I said.

"I love Minnie Mouse and all of Disney. Some day I will go."

I took her into my arms for slow dancing. In her small kitchen, we were one with the music, singing to each other.

"No other boyfriend has chosen this music or danced with me. You're the first."

"What do most choose?"

"Van Halen or similar. How come you dance?"

"I have three older sisters. They taught me to dance. I went to all the school dances. They were good sisters. They still are."

I pulled her closer, kissing her. Her arms wrapped around my neck. Sexual Healing came on, and I sang it to her.

The CD ended, and I put on some Donna Summer. Faster, more fun, and we danced to this too. Enjoying every second of it. Then the food bell rang. She took it out, and I found some light jazz and played it.

We sat beside each other eating. "This is delicious."

"Thank you. My bubbies recipe."

I looked at her. "I'm Jewish too."

She smiled. We both knew the stars were aligning. Something big was happening here.

We finished. "Let me do the dishes."

"No other guy had ever asked me that."

"The right one is right in front of you."

I washed, dried, and put everything away. She returned to my arms. "Hot tub?"

"Yes."

We changed, and she led me to the hot tub. I took off my shirt and sandals. She was watching me.

I sat in the hot water and watched her take off her tee, shorts, and sandals. She was in a one-piece and looked great. She joined me in the water. First across from me, then moving beside me as others joined us.

Someone said, "You have an accent from the north."

"I'm not from Boston. I don't pack my cah." I got them laughing. "I am from up north. Western Massachusetts, to be exact. I didn't think I had an accent."

"I study dialects and can hear it a bit. I bet no one else can."

"I can't," Gracie said. Others agreed; they couldn't either.

"I don't think this is far enough south for differences in words to be noticeable. For example, what do you call a shopping cart?"

"Shopping cart." She said.

"It's a shopping carriage." Another person said.

"It's a shopping buggy." Someone else said.

We continued, with everyone throwing out words as we compared what they were to us. It was a fun conversation.

Gradually, everyone left, leaving Gracie and me alone.

"Hi," I said.

She swung onto my lap, looking at me. "Hi back at you."

"I missed you last night after you left," I said.

"Me too. So much so that I turned around and returned, but your truck was gone."

"I had to run an errand."

She looked at me; I think she knew where I went.

"Where to?"

"Pharmacy."

"For what?"

"Something I might need."

"You won't tell me?"

Suddenly shy, I looked down. She got me. I looked back up into her eyes. Her lips found mine. "I..." I couldn't say it.

"For me?"

"Yes." I nodded yes.

"Thank you. Most guys won't, expecting the girl to be on the pill."

"I want to keep us both safe. If it happens."

"When was your last time?" She asked me.

"It's been a while. Since before I started working with you. What about you? Wait, that's none of my business. You don't have to answer that."

"A bit less than six months. See, I've had my eye on this guy, but I haven't been able to get close to him because of our work situation. Now that's changed, and I can get close finally."

"I think you could get closer. Perfect." She moved closer. I had one hand behind her and one on her side. I slowly moved it up until it was on her breast. I grazed her nipple, making it erect. I pulled her bathing suit to the side, lowered my head, licking her nipple. I grazed it with my teeth, causing a moan from Gracie.

I licked, sucked, and nibbled, making her moan more loudly. I covered that one and did the same to the other one. She was holding my head in place with her hands. I covered her back up, tilting my head up. Kissing her again as my hands roamed over her back, shoulders, and down to her butt.

I slid my fingers under her suit, holding her butt in my hands. Her lips were still locked on mine. I slid my hands around, finding her pussy and rubbing her under cover of the hot tub bubbles.

She pushed away from kissing, just looking at me. Her eyes closed as I watched her cum. I continued playing with her pussy, I wanted her to cum again.

I rubbed more, restricted by the angle of my hand. "I want to taste you," I said to her. "Will you let me?"

She nodded yes. "Yes, here or at my place?"

"Would you be comfortable sitting on the edge or going inside? You choose."

She looked around. The sun was setting, but we were still visible. She chewed her lip. "Let's go inside."

I removed my fingers. She stood, got out, we dried off, and I followed. She took my hand and led me back to her place.

Inside the door, the kissing started again. I reached down and rubbed her through her bathing suit. Nudging her back, I took her straps and pulled them down, kneeling to pull her suit and sandals completely off.

I pulled her to the floor, spreading her legs. I kissed up one side and down the other. Her glistening pussy was waiting for me. I gave her my first lick. "Mmmm." She moaned. I went lick crazy on her pussy. Her moaning got louder and louder as she came.

It was time. I picked her up and carried her to her bedroom. I placed her on the edge of the bed, her legs on my shoulders, and I licked more. I loved the sounds she was making.

I reached over and pulled a condom out of my pants pocket. I pulled my bathing suit off, tore open the condom, and put it on me.

I stood, rubbed myself on her wetness, and slowly slid in. Our eyes were glued to each other. Smiles on both of our faces.

I increased my speed.

"Wait," She said. She moved more into the center of the bed. Looking at me and moving her finger for me to follow her.

I re-inserted myself. My arms were on either side of her as I thrust into her over and over. Her hands were on my arms, gripping me tightly. I increased speed; she thrust her head back, mouth open, "Ohhhhh godddd," she said as she came.

Her sounds and actions got me revved up as I pushed in hard, cumming very hard.

I lowered myself to her. Kissing her softly. She rolled us over so she was on top. She raised herself up, pulling the condom off me, tying it, and dropping it in the trash beside the bed.

She reached down and stroked me, making me hard again. I brought my other hand to her and opened it. Another condom was in it. She smiled, tore it open, and put it on me.

Then she lowered herself onto me again. She was just rocking at first. Watching me watch her.

"Do you have another in the other hand?" She asked me.

Shaking my head no. "Two more in my wallet. The rest at the hotel."

"Four, that has to be a record."

"I usually have two with me, but I don't know. I guess I was hoping for a busy night and morning."

"You expect to stay the night?"

"Yes."

"I hope you do. Most leave, but you want to stay. Why?"

"I like you a lot, Gracie. I want to be with you. I want you to be with me. If you want me to leave, I will. Do you want me to go?" I asked softly.

"No. Stay. I want you to stay."

I smiled, put my hands on her hips, and started thrusting into her. She pushed me down. Then using her legs to move her up and down. I watched myself go in and out.

She knew I was close. She saw me trying to hold back. "Cum for me, Alan."

I pulled her down as I thrust up and exploded inside her. I relaxed onto the bed; she leaned forward into my arms. I held her tight. I was coming down. Kissing her, rolling us onto our sides.

"How many women have you spent the whole night with?"

"Two prior. How many men have spent the whole night with you?"

"You'll be the first. Most run out after the sex."

"Not me. I want to be with you. It's so much more than just the sex."

"Let's get under the covers." She said. She pulled off me, pulled the condom off, and put that one in the trash. We wiggled around and pulled the covers up over us, meeting in the middle.

"We both have work tomorrow," I said.

"Mmmm."

"You're still my boss."

"Mmmm. So I can order you around."

"Yes, ma'am," I said. "I'll do anything. What would you like right now?"

"Pull me tighter, kiss, mmmm, close your eyes. This is nice, Alan."

I fell asleep. I woke in the middle of the night to pee. I found my bag, pulling the two condoms out of my wallet. I also pulled my toothbrush and toothpaste and brushed, returning both to the bag, but keeping the condoms with me. They went on the nightstand. I got back into bed with her.

"Good idea. I'll be right back."

I heard her flush, water running, and she returned.

"Are you still awake?"

"Yes, waiting for you," I said.

We pulled each other closer, kissing softly. Noses rubbing. We were both making little noises.

She pushed me over. "You brushed your teeth for me. That's a first."

"Yes, and you for me."

"Mmmm." I moaned.

She slid down me, pushing the covers back. Taking me in her hands, stroking, and then a lick.

"Oh, god." After our earlier fun, I didn't think I could get hard so quickly. I was wrong.

Her mouth was gliding up and down on me. Her tongue was working its magic.

"Cum for me, Alan. It's my turn to taste you."

She sped up, and I felt the earth moving. "Ohhhh, Gracie." I exploded into her mouth.

I was sweating and breathing hard. She came back up and snuggled. "Don't fight it, Alan. Sleep. I'm right here."

I closed my eyes. Then my watch alarm went off.

I turned it off. "Can we just spend the day in bed?"

"I wish."

"Is today Thursday?"

She grabbed my wrist. "Your watch says it is."

I was looking at her, and she was looking at me.

"I know," She said.

I raised my eyebrows, opening my eyes wide. "Girlfriend?" I said.

Nodding, "Yes. Exclusive. Even with the wait between your visits. I'll wait for you."

"Me too. Exclusive for you. Let's make the most of these three days. But work first."

"Will you return to the hotel to change?"

"I'll put on yesterday's clothes. Can you bring a bathing suit, change, and stay with me tonight at the hotel?"

"Yes, of course."

"Do you have more condoms?"

Smiling, "Yes, I bought two boxes."

"Optimistic?" She said.

"Prepared. You are so beautiful in the morning."

"What about the rest of the day?"

"Absolutely stunning."

"Are you saying that because you are in my bed?"

"No. One thing I abhor is lying. I would never lie to you or anyone, for that matter. It's my ethical standard, maybe the Boy Scout in me. Lying just hurts people. So why do it?

Yes, you are absolutely stunning, Gracie. You are easily the most beautiful woman in the shop or anywhere.

Can you promise me we will never talk about work outside the shop?"

"Yes, I promise."

I looked at my watch. "Come on, up, shower together, breakfast, and let's go.

We went into the shower. Neither of us could keep our hands off each other. I made her cum twice in the shower. I was still drained, but kissing her was electric.

We dried each other off; she wore different clothing, and I wore the same as yesterday. After a quick breakfast, I followed her to the shop. We parked away from each other, walked in, and saw Mike pull in.

"Good morning, Mike." We both said together.

He took one look at us and knew. "I knew you two would get together eventually. I don't think I have ever seen you both happier. Congratulations."

"Thanks, Mike," I said. Gracie was blushing.

"Even though your promotion has been announced, you both still need to be careful here."

"We know. Just boss and employee for now. Before you ask, even though you know. Yes, we like each other a lot." I said.

I held the door open for them. I got another temporary day pass, and they waved their badges.

The day went slowly because I wanted it to go quickly.

I met Gracie in the parking lot, and she followed me to the hotel. We parked. I took her bag in one hand and her hand in mine and led her up to my room.

Closing the door, "I've been waiting all day to kiss you."

Her arms went around my neck, pulling me to her. "I've been waiting all day for us to kiss again, too. It was worth the wait. What are we doing for dinner tonight?"

"You?" I said, smiling. "Mexican?"

"How about food first, then me?"

"Wise choice, as I doubt we'd leave the room if we started now," I said.

"A few more kisses first. Mmmm, okay, let's go eat, boyfriend."

"I like the sound of that, girlfriend."

We entered and were in a little booth. Ten minutes later, Mike, Evie, and the boys walked past us. When they sat, they saw us and came over. "Come join us," Evie said.

"We don't want to impose," Gracie said.

"We want you to join us," Dakota said.

"Well, we can't turn down an invitation like that. Certainly, thank you. Let me just inform our waitress."

We joined them and talked for two hours. "This has been fun. But the boys have school tomorrow."

"Hey guys, are you ready to play on Saturday?"

"We sure are, Alan." They slapped me five. "Bye, Gracie," Levi said.

"I think you have a fan club other than me. I can't blame them. They know a pretty girl."

"Walk on the beach with me?"

"Of course."

We walked, and I had an idea. I started some soft music, put the phone in my pocket, and danced with Gracie in my arms.

"Girl, leaving on Sunday is going to be so difficult," I said.

She pulled me tighter. We swayed to the music.

"For the three months until Carl leaves, how about if I return one week a month? That way I'm not away from you for 7 weeks."

"It's starting to get dark; let's go to your room," Gracie said.

I turned off the music, took her hand, and we returned to the hotel.

We took off our clothes, got into bed hugging each other.

"Is it okay if we just snuggle tonight?"

"Of course it is. Come here. That's it. I got you."

"Alan, when I've suggested that to other guys, they've walked away or gone home. But you pulled me closer. Why?"

"Because you're with me. That's the best thing in the world. You're right here with me."

"Alan, when you're with me, I feel like I've been struck by lightning. I feel alive, incredible, liked and loved for me. Not just my body."

"Gracie, I love you for you. All of you. Yes, the sex is amazing, but holding you in my arms is amazing too.

If you missed that. I love you Gracie. I feel that electric charge too. I want to be with you."

She pulled me closer. "I feel that too. I love you too, Alan. I love everything about you from your smile, to your touch. The way you look at me, melts my heart. I want to be with you. I've never felt anything like this before."

"I'm right here for you. I feel your heart beating. Mine beats for you. Sleep now. Little kiss. Love you."

"Love you too, my Gracie. Sleep."

We both slept great. Waking up nearly the same way we fell asleep. I silenced the first alarm. She was still asleep.

Whispering, "Gracie, sweetheart, we need to get up and go to work. It's Friday." I kissed her nose.

Her eyes fluttered open. She smiled. "Good morning sweetheart." I said.

"Good morning my teddy bear."

"I like that. Gracie's personal teddy bear."

"Was last night okay?"

"Last night was perfect, phenomenal, amazing. You were with me. It can't get any better."

"I bet you say that to all the girls."

"You are the first and only. Hopefully the last."

Her hand went to my cheek. Our lips met for a soft kiss.

"Alan Moore, are you real?"

I put my hand on her cheek. Thumbing her hair off her face. "I am so real."

I moved my hand to her side, tickling her, making her giggle and wiggle and scream in laughter.

"Girl, you have ignited my world. We need to get up, eat, shower and get to work."

I got up, pulling her up with me. We dressed quickly and went down for breakfast.

We returned for a quick shower, each washing the other off. A little touching. Then drying each other off and going to our vehicles.

I went to the pen and she to her office. Two hours later, I put up that I was taking a 15 minute break.

I went to Mike's office. Knocking, waved in.

"Hi, Mike, Can I ask you a non-work question?"

"Sure. Shoot."

"What does it feel like to be in love?"

A big smile came on his face. "For me, I felt like my body was firing on 16 cylinders. I felt alive. The slightest touch from Evie was like an electrical charge. It still is.

It's being with her, doing things with her. It's so much more than sex. It's everything. I was giddy with happiness.

She still does that to me.

Love is hard to define. It's everything about her, from her look to her touch to the kiss to everything."

"That's the way Gracie and I feel about each other. We both said the L word to each other last night.

Everything with her is incredible. It's everything you described and more.

Last night she told me when she asked past boyfriends to snuggle, they would leave.

I told her being with her is what I want, not just the sex. Which is incredible. But being with her. Her touch, her kiss, her look.

When we woke up this morning, I saw myself growing old with her. Waking up 40 years from now with this amazing person next to me."

"You found your forever person, Alan. Don't doubt it."

"How do I leave on Sunday? It's going to hurt us both so much.

I'm thinking maybe imposing on you guys is not right. If Gracie and I continue, I don't want to break your rule of not having a guest at night or weekends. It's not right.

So thank you. But I'll stay in a hotel room for now. At least until I know where we're going."

Mike got up. Sitting in the corner of his desk.

"I can't let you do that. We all know Gracie. Please stay with us and Gracie can too.

We were worried about someone we didn't know. We'd be thrilled to have you both.

Plus, the boys would be heartbroken if you didn't stay. They like you like an older brother.

Please stay."

Knock knock. Mike motioned the person in.

"Here you are. A long 15 minutes." Gracie said.

"It's my fault, I'll account for him.

Listen, Gracie. You heard Alan is going to be staying with us when he's down here.

Evie and I would like to extend the invitation for you to stay with him. The boys like you both. Please stay, Alan."

I looked at Gracie. "Would that be okay with you?"

With a big smile on her face. "Yes, I would love that. Thank you so very much."

"Alan?" Mike said.

I shook my head, yes. "Yes, thank you so much. We'll pitch in for food and other things."

"You can work that out with Evie."

I stood up and shook his hand and he pulled me into a hug. "You two, welcome to the family.

Don't forget the football game and skating on Saturday."

"We're not missing that." I said. "Thank you both. I'll hug Gracie after work."

She smiled. "Come on, back to work."

I walked out and returned to my station.

Mike

"Gracie, he's madly in love with you. He feels the way I did when I realized I loved Evie."

"Mike, I feel the same way about him. It's like I've been hit by lightning. He's the real thing.

When I woke up this morning, I was thinking of waking up with him for the rest of my life."

"I'm so happy for you both. If, after he leaves, you feel lonely, or need to talk, you're always welcome at our house. Evie likes you both so much."

She looked at me. "Mike, thank you. I may take you up on that. Sunday is going to be so hard.

Dammit, I don't want to cry. We still have two days together."

I gave her a hug. "It's okay."

"Thanks Mike. I know he really is looking forward to staying with you all."

"You're welcome. Now go back to work. If he sees you crying, you know he'll pull you into his arms. Job be damned. You can't let that happen. I think he has a huge future here."

She first bumped me. "See you tomorrow morning."

Friday ended. I met Gracie in the parking lot. "I have an idea for dinner. Very simple. Let's stop at the grocery store for a few things."

She followed me. I bought some Hamburg patties and a few other things.

"You can follow me to my house."

"No, let's drop you car at the hotel first."

She got in the truck. "What are you doing?"

I drove to the beach, parked and opened the tailgate. I opened my cooler pulling out a few things, then the other cooler.

I set up my backpacking grill, got it lit and heated up the frying pan.

"I did some back packing as a Boy Scout. This is a jetboil burner, it can boil water, heat a pan for grilling and other things."

I grilled the burgers, pulled out the chips and some iced tea. I put a blanket behind the tailgate and we sat and ate.

"Is this okay?

She finished chewing. "This is great." She took another bite. She finished hers first, watching me eat mine.

I put everything away and we moved the blanket to the beach.

We lay on our sides looking at each other. Smiling and then laughing. I wanted to say something, but couldn't come up with words. I shrugged.

She came to me, pushing me over, and climbing on me. Her head was on my chest. Words were not needed. I hugged her and she hugged me. We lay like that for a while.

"Hotel?" She said.

"Mmmm." I replied. "I'm happy right here with you."

She squeezed me tighter.

The sun was setting. Returning to the hotel, we went and sat in the hot tub, soaking with others.

"I'm pruned." Gracie said. "Let's go to your room."

We got out and walked hand in hand to my room. "Shower?"

"Yes."

We couldn't keep our hands off each other. Running out of hot water, we got out and continued on the bed.

"Alan, if I told you I just wanted to snuggle tonight, would that be okay with you?"

"I told you, Gracie. I want to be with you. I can wait for sex. Holding you close makes me feel incredible."

She pushed me over, climbing on top of me, pushing my dick onto my stomach and rubbing her wet pussy on me. She ground onto me. She got wetter and wetter. She was going to cum soon. She slowed down, then started again, grinding on top of me.

"Gonna cum soon." I said.

She backed up, flipped my dick up and sank down on me. Her head went back, "Oh, Alan!"

That did it, "Gracie!" I pushed up as she came down and I spurted like a rocket igniting. She fell onto me, I pulled her close. We both grabbed the blanket, pulling it over us.

"I love you, Alan." She told me.

"I love you too, Gracie. Can't keep my eyes open. Kiss me." She did and I fell asleep.

We woke a little late, scrambling in the shower, caught the last of breakfast and went to Mike and Evie's for the game.

"Good morning." I said

"Good morning, Alan. The boys are very excited for today. They can't wait to see you. Good morning Gracie. You are shining with happiness. We are so happy for you both."

"Morning Evie. I am with my guy. Things are great. We're in love."

"Guys, huddle, this is our first plan. Are you ready?"

We lined up, getting the ball first and ran with it. The boys were fast and scored easily. Gracie, Alex, Annmarie (Carl's wife) and Evie cheering us on.

We stole the ball the second play. Dakota threw to me and I passed to Levi who scored. We scored again and again, beating them 35 to zero.

"You guys did awesome for your first game! Congratulations!"

"Dad, were you really trying?" Dakota asked.

"Yes, I was, we all were. You guys are good. We'll keep practicing until Alan returns in a few weeks."

"Okay gang. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, then we go roller skating. There is a rink five minutes from here."

The girls made sandwiches for us all. Then we piled into the vehicles and arrived at the rink. Gracie and I were the first out there, the rest trying to figure out skate sizes.

I took her hand. "I LOVE to skate. I don't go often enough back home. Now that I know there is a rink minutes from Mike's house, I think I'll be here more often. They're supposed to start some music soon. You skate very well."

"I'll skate with you anytime, boyfriend."

I moved in front of her, skating backwards, pulling her to me for a kiss. "Can't get enough of those." I kissed her again. "Here come the boys, let's go help them, then Andii and Elias."

"Hey guys, watch Gracie and I." We returned. "One at a time, give us your hands, we'll take you around the rink. "Noah first."

"This is easy." Noah said. "Let me go."

We paced him. He had it. "Hi Dakota, you're next, then Levi."

All three took to it with ease. "Ok guys, around you go. We'll catch up in a bit."

Andii came out. Gracie and I explained the basics, pointing to the boys. Her husband Barton was already skating. Gracie had one hand and I had the other. "We got you." Gracie said.

Slowly she got it. Barton took her hand. "We'll be back, go slow, then speed up as you get more confident. You got this Andii."

We went to Elias. "Watch the boys, see how this works?" I asked him.

"I do. I'm good at everything, but not sure about this." Elias said.

"Go slow, look at Chris and Alex. Here they come. We'll be back." Alex and Chris took a hand.

The music started and Gracie and I started roller dancing. Mike and Evie joined us. I was in my element, loving this. We stopped in the middle and started making out. Then remembered where we were and started dancing again.

"Let's see how fast we can go, Alan." Gracie said.

We sped up, her hair blowing behind her as we raced around the rink. We slowed, Evie came to me, Gracie went to Mike.

"Would it be okay if I returned in three weeks, Evie?"

"Of course Alan. We'll expect you. We've never seen Gracie happier. She's joined us with some of her past boyfriends, but she's never had the big smile she has right now. She loves you Alan."

"I know, and I love her. It just works. Leaving tomorrow morning is going to be so difficult. So, so difficult. Will you keep in touch with her? I don't want her to mope while I am gone. I'll call and text her, but as you know, it's not the same as being here."

"What time do you plan on leaving tomorrow?"

"I think 10 am. That's my goal. If I didn't have the house to take care of, I would stay."

"We know, she knows. We'll keep track of her. You'll both be fine. This is fun, thanks for suggesting it. Now we know it's just a few minutes from the house, so we'll take the boys more often."

"I'll probably suggest it every time I visit. I love roller skating. I like ice skating too, but roller skating more. Evie, thank you so much. It means so much to me being around you guys."

Mike came over, taking Evie's hand, Gracie had his other and then mine. Round and round we went.

We came up to the boys. I picked up two and Mike one. "Hold on guys, we're going to accelerate."

The two of us flew around the rink with the boys on our shoulders. Evie was taking pics of the five of us with big smiles on our faces.

"Dad, we're getting hungry. What's for dinner?"

"We're taking Alan and Gracie out tonight as Alan is going home tomorrow for a few weeks. What are you and Gracie in the mood for?"

"I would love some seafood. Gracie?"

"That sounds like a great idea. Me too."

"Let's return the skates and put our shoes back on. Let's see if the others want to join us."

"We all ended up at a seafood place along the ocean. Eating, sitting and talking. Ending the day. We were surprised when a small band started playing.

I got up and made a few requests. I pulled Gracie up and we slowly danced and were soon joined by others.

Andii came to me, "Alan, I have never seen Gracie this happy."

"I don't think I have ever been this happy, Andii. I love her like crazy. It's only been a few days. Please watch her while I am gone. I'll be back in three weeks. I don't want her to be sad."

"Evie and I will keep her busy. I promise you."

"Can I cut in?" Barton asked.

I backed away and Alex came to me. "Boy Scout, you've made my girl Gracie so happy."

"Thanks Alex. She makes me so happy too."

"You better not hurt her or I'll send someone to hurt you."

"I could never do that to her, Alex. I love her. Leaving tomorrow is going to be so difficult. Please keep her company."

"I will, Alan. You drive safely. You're more important than ever now."

"I know, thank you. Here's Gracie." Alex backed away.

"Hi beautiful, I missed you." She looked at me. "Oh, don't cry, we have tonight and tomorrow morning." I hugged her tightly.

We decided to return to the hotel.

"Guys, thank you for an amazing week. I'll see everyone in three weeks."

"Congrats again, Alan. Drive safe, we'll see you in a few weeks." I heard.

I went to Evie. She looked sad. "Come on, Gracie is giving me the same face." She gave me a hug and kiss on the cheek.

"We'll have a room ready for you both, when you return."

I went to the boys. "Guys, thanks for a fun week." I went to slap them five. They surprised me with a hug. I hugged them back.

"Mike, thank you for everything. I'll see you in a few weeks." We did his handshake hug. I knew I had to leave before I broke down.

"Come on Gracie." We held hands and walked out. "Hot tub?"

"Yes."

We soaked with other hotel patrons for a while. She looked at me, I nodded and we got out, dried off and went upstairs. We took a quick shower and got into bed, holding each other closely.

Then she started crying. I pulled her closer. She stopped crying and fell asleep. I felt myself dozing and fell asleep, wrapped tightly with her."

My alarm rang at 8 am. We slipped on shorts, Tee's and sandals and went to breakfast. We sat in a booth and she was attached to me. We talked a little and both kept looking at each other.

Back in the room, she closed the door and held me. Crying softly. "I'll be back in a few weeks. I promise. I'll video call you every day. I'm going to miss you terribly.

When I return, I'll let you know and you'll come join me at Mike and Evie's."

She nodded. Her eyes were puffy. I was going to lose it soon if we didn't do something. So I pulled her into the shower.

We started making out. She held me, stoking me to hardness. She sank to her knees and drained me. I dropped to my knees and made her cum with my tongue. I stood and kissed her. We both tasted ourselves on each other.

My hands were on her neck, holding her closely. "Promise me you won't mope."

She looked at me, water running down her face. Eyes wide open looking at me.

My lips found hers again. Finally we got out, dried off, brushed our teeth, and dressed. We both packed. I checked out and we went to my truck. I threw my bag in the back and we hugged again.

The tears came out in force. I couldn't control mine either.

I kissed her tears, nose, and lips. She had me in a bear hug and suddenly Evie and Mike were right there.

I backed away. Giving her one last kiss. "I love you, Gracie Adams. I'll call you when I get home."

I kissed Evie on the cheek, waved to Mike. I got in the truck, lowered the windows and cranked some Rock and Roll to deafening levels and left.

I hit some traffic on the trip and got home a little after 4:00 pm.

I unpacked, washed clothes and planned meals for the next few days. I had dinner, went for a run, showered and called Evie from the couch.

"Hi Alan."

"Hi Evie, how is Gracie?"

"She cried for a long time. We brought her back to the house. Mike drove her car over. She's calmed down and is talking about movies with the boys. How was your drive, how are you?"

"The drive was okay. I cranked the tunes for the whole drive and sang. It helped me to not think about anything except driving. I'm doing laundry, went for a run, ate and am on the couch. Something is on TV. It's just background noise.

Maybe I shouldn't talk to her tonight?"

"No, Alan. Talk to her, even if it's just short. She needs to hear you got home safely."

"Okay, I'll call her now. Evie, thank you for everything."

"You're welcome, Alan. Bye."

I called Gracie, "Hi Alan. The boys say hi, listen. 'Hi Alan.' Did you hear them?"

"Yes. I'm home, the drive was okay, I'm doing laundry, ate dinner and am sitting on the couch with something on TV."

"Hmmm, you know, we could talk and watch the same movie and talk and comment on it."

"That sounds like fun. You tell me when and we'll plan on it. Did you eat dinner?"

"Yes, Evie and Mike asked me to join them. I'm here on their couch talking about movies with them. They have to get ready for school soon.

We have some good friends. Can you call me at 9:30 tomorrow night and we'll talk from bed? I have an idea for us."

"Oooh, phone sex. I'm up for that." I said.

"I somehow knew that. Alan, I'm so glad you asked me out."

"Me too. I'm looking at the calendar for when I am there next and there is a fair of some sort a few towns over I'd like to take you too. Maybe I could win you a big bear that you could hug while I am not there."

"I like that idea. Maybe you could put one of your shirts on it, so it would smell like you. Let's do that. Hang one. Go ahead guys. 'Good night, Alan. We'll see you in a few weeks.' They're going to sleep."

"Good night guys. Do well in school tomorrow."

"We will." They said.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah. Mike and Evie wouldn't let me go home tonight. So I'm staying in your future room."

"Hmmm, I have an idea for when I return. I'm writing myself a note. I'm glad you're with them. I'm getting tired. That drive always makes me tired.

I love you, Gracie. Don't ever forget that."

"I love you, Alan Moore and I will never forget. Good night and sweet dreams. I'll see you at work tomorrow. Bye."

"Bye."

I turned off the TV and went to my room.

Three weeks later, I was preparing to leave. I started thinking about maybe picking up a little two seat sports car of some sort to make the drive more fun. I'll have to do some research.

I brought a few extra tee's and a spare bottle of my cologne. I hope I can find a big stuffed bear or similar that my tee's will fit on and leave the bottle with Gracie to refresh my smell. Hoping it would make her feel like I am there with her a little.

I shared my position with both Gracie and Mike. I was so excited I barely slept. I skipped breakfast, and left the house a little past 6 am Saturday. I hit my tunes and headed to Delaware. It was mid-October and some leaves were changing, making the ride prettier than normal.

I pulled into my parking space at the house a little after 11. No traffic and maybe I drove a little quicker. Before I even got out, Gracie drove up, parking next to me.

I got out and she jumped into my arms. "I've missed you so much Gracie."

She had me in a tight grip, "You're here, you're here, and mine for a week. I can't believe it!"

I saw the boys followed by Evie and Mike. I got hugs of welcome. I grabbed my bag, then Gracie's bag and her hand and went inside. I dropped them in our room and went down to the kitchen where everyone was making sandwiches.

"Perfect. I was so excited about coming down I barely slept last night and skipped breakfast. It's so good to be here."

"That location tracking worked great. Welcome back!"

"Thank you. It's so good to be here instead of the hotel, especially with you all. Thank you for lunch. I was pretty hungry. What are you all doing this afternoon?"

"Watching one of the playoff games." Noah said.

"Sounds perfect. Unless you want to do something Gracie? I'm game for anything."

"The game sounds perfect."

We sat on the very comfortable couch. Gracie had my arm and was leaning against me. Her other hand was in mine. I was watching, leaning back and dozing off.

I woke around 3 with a light blanket on me and Gracie. I closed my eyes again and the next thing I knew, I was being woken up for dinner.

Gracie was whispering in my ear, "Grilled chicken with baked potato and a good beer." Then she sucked my lobe and licked my ear.

I turned my head, she was laughing. I kissed her. Our heads against one another. Then I heard, "Kids, come on, dinner is ready."

Gracie got up and pulled me up. I stretched and joined them at the table.

"Sorry guys, I guess being relaxed, I fell asleep."

"You two looked so cute together." Evie said.

"Mmmm, this is delicious. Maybe you'll let me cook a meal or a few for everyone. I can cook and my parents have told me I'm pretty good at it."

"We can do that. I'll take you grocery shopping with me tomorrow night after dinner and you can pick some foods." Evie said.

"I'm in."

"Me too." Gracie said.

"Would you like to take a walk after dinner, Gracie?"

"Yes, most certainly." she said. We walked around the block. We didn't talk much. Just holding her hand made me happy. I felt I was being recharged.

We stopped at the end of their driveway. We faced each other. "I know we talked every day, but I missed touching you, holding you, being near you, being with you. I feel like your touch has recharged me. Heck, I can't say what I feel, what I'm trying to say."

Her hand went to my face. I turned it and kissed her palm and her fingers. Looking into her soul through her eyes. I bent and kissed her. "I love you so much. If Evie will allow me, I'm going to start coming down one week each month. I can't stay away from you longer. It will kill me."

"I'd like that very much. I missed you so much. I want to be with you every day. Being apart, even though we talked, was so hard. I love you so much, Alan."

We kissed again, right there at the end of the driveway. We did go in, joining the conversation with Mike and Evie on the couch.

We were sitting close together on the couch and heads bent towards each other. I heard the sound of a picture being taken behind us and then saw Evie in front of us taking our picture again. I smiled, and she winked at me.

"Gracie,"

"Mmmm,"

"Gracie, I want to grow old with you."

"Me too, with you, Alan." She tightened her grip on me, hugging me closer.

Her hand was in mine. "I love you, Gracie."

"I love you too, Alan. So very much. I want to grow old with you too."

The week went too quickly and I was on my way home again. I was scheduled to be there again the week before Thanksgiving.

Evie called me on my way home. "Hi, Evie, is everything okay?"

"Everything is fine Alan. I forgot to ask you if you wanted to extend your stay next month for another week and spend Thanksgiving with us. Gracie already said yes. And yes, you both will stay here."

"Yes. Yes, thank you so much. Could I stay a few days after the Sunday of Thanksgiving so I don't have to deal with the holiday traffic when I go home?"

"Of course, Alan. I see on the calendar that your Hanukkah starts on the Friday right after Thanksgiving. When you get home, send me a link of what your candle holder is and where to get one and the candles and you and Gracie can teach us."

"Evie, thank you so much. I will do that. Thank you. I hate leaving you all. It gets harder and harder each time."

"We know and feel it too. We'll see you in three weeks. Don't forget that email."

Hmmm, Hanukkah in Delaware. I have an idea for a Hanukkah present for Gracie that we can use during the shop holiday shutdown in December.

I ordered her gifts and ordered a Menorah and candles be sent to Mike's house.

The weeks went by quicker this time and then it was Thanksgiving. Mike's parents were there with us as were Evie's. Gracie's said no, and mine were with friends in North Carolina.

The next day, Gracie and I made potato latkes for everyone. Then we told the story of Hanukkah and lit the candles. We played dreidel and we handed out a lot of Hanukkah gelt.

I pulled out a box wrapped in Hanukkah paper. "Gracie, this is for you. I hope you like it."

Her eyes got big. "Can I open it now?" Everyone was watching.

"Yes, that's why I just gave it to you."

She opened it slowly. The box wasn't that big. The card she read first then passed it around. Slowly she opened the box.

She pulled out a Disney Minnie Mouse shirt. The smile on her face was priceless. She put it down and took out a Mickey Mouse shirt that matched hers. Another big smile. Then the card at the bottom.

"You already gave me a card." She said.

"Open it." I said.

She did. Her hand went to her mouth. A week at the Disney resort and tickets for Disney World, Epcot and more. I knew she always wanted to go. Now she will, with me.

"Alan, this is great. Oh, thank you so much!" She pulled me to her lips for a kiss. "Can we put our shirts on?"

"Of course." I changed mine right there, she went into the bathroom. When she came out, Evie was up taking our pictures.

"Wait, I almost forgot." She handed me an envelope.

Inside was a card and a gift certificate to a local stereo shop. "I know you've been having some issues with your truck stereo. Now you can replace it and make it even better."

"Thank you, thank you. Making the long drive with a radio that sometimes works makes me crazy. Can we go over there tomorrow? Maybe they can do the work before I leave on Wednesday." We kissed again.

"I can't wait. Do we drive down or fly?"

"I was thinking we could drive from here or buy plane tickets and rent a car. Whichever you want I'll be very happy with."

"I have a thought for you both." Mike said. "Actually an offer.

Stay here as usual before you leave and take my SUV. It's much more comfortable and fun to drive than your truck or your little SUV."

"Are you sure, Mike?"

"Yes. I'll use your truck. Please, I know you'll both be so much more comfortable."

"Thank you so much. I..., I'm going outside for a moment. I'll be right back." I was feeling emotional and didn't want anyone to see my tears.

Gracie came to me. "Why the tears?"

"It's a happy, emotional thing." She kissed me, there on the cool deck. "Is your present okay?"

"I love my present. I love that you and I can do this together. Alan, stay, don't go back home. Stay down here with me."

"I'd love to, but have a house and yard to take care of. Why don't you move in with me, up there. We have the house. New England is so beautiful. I know you'd love it once you saw it."

"I don't want to go up north." She said.

"Why?"

"I just don't."

"Okay, I won't push. Let's go back inside, miss Minnie Mouse."

"I love you, my Mickey Mouse. Kiss me."

The next day we went to the stereo shop and scheduled an install for Monday. The truck was going to rock."

December winter shop break arrived.

We arrived at Mike's, and no one was home. I used my key to let Gracie and me into the house.

We put our things in the room and went downstairs.

I put on some Eagles music, took her hand in mine, one arm on her waist, hers around mine. Our bodies close together, my cheek beside hers. We softly sang the music, hummed, and very slowly danced in the living room.

I was so lost in Gracie. My eyes were closed. I heard a little noise and saw Evie and the family coming in. She took one look at us and took a picture.

She and Mike shushed the boys and went in the other direction. A few minutes later, I heard another noise and saw Mike and Evie had joined us, slowly dancing together. I smiled at Evie, who smiled back and winked. She closed her eyes, hugging Mike.

I pulled Gracie closer. I whispered very softly, "Love you, Gracie.'

She pulled me tighter. We stayed that way. Dancing closely.

Mike and I swapped vehicles. The next day, Gracie and I headed south.

We spent a night with my parents, and said we would again when we returned north. We had a phenomenal time at Disney, sharing pictures with Mike and Evie and my parents and the other leaders.

The time went by quickly. We returned to Mikes house and then I went home.

I was crazy for Gracie. Seeing her one week a month just wasn't enough. But we made it work.

Winter turned into Spring turned into Summer. My team has grown from 10 to 20. I love my job.

Summer vacation was coming up fast. When I was up in June, we talked. "Hi Gracie, I want to go to Acadia National Park this summer. Please say you'll come up and join me? I know you'd love it."

"Alan, come down here and we'll sit on the beach everyday and make love every night."

"Why won't you come up to me?"

"I don't want to go north."

"Please tell me. Did something bad happen, did someone say something, are you scared of something? Please, I deserve to know. Please tell me."

She looked at me, chewed her lip, took my hands in hers. "When I was nine, my Bubbie and Zaydie were visiting ballparks around the country. They went to Boston to go to Fenway. A car hit theirs and both were killed.

Every time I think of going up there, their memories come flooding back. I loved them so much and miss them so much."

"That was 14 years ago. Would you please come up for me? Please? We can stay far away from Boston. Please, Gracie."

She looked at me, shaking her head no. She hugged me crying. I held her close.

"How about if I come down here and we do the museums and touristy stuff in DC and do beach time too? Would that be okay? I'll do Acadia another time."

"Thank you."

We spent two weeks with Mike and the family. Doing things with the boys, ourselves and everyone.

Lying in bed, side by side one night. "Gracie, would you marry me if I asked you?"

She looked at me, her hand went to my cheek. "Yes."

"Would you move into my house?"

She looked at me, shaking her head no. "Alan."

"I know. Snuggle closer. Love you." We fell asleep.

October arrived, I was hoping the sports car I ordered would come in soon so I could use it before it started snowing. The leaves were changing, making the landscape beautiful with reds and oranges. It was spectacular. The drive south was so beautiful.

I arrived early Saturday afternoon. Gracie drove up and the gang came out to welcome me. We went skating the next day and it was a busy work week.

Friday after dinner, Gracie and I took our after dinner walk, stopping in the driveway.

"I want you to be brave and come up and visit me. I promise to keep you safe. Please, please, do this for me."

She looked at me, shaking her head.

"Please, Gracie, for me. Come to my house. We don't have to go anywhere. We can stay there."

"Alan..."

"I won't move down here. You won't move up to me. I think we should take a break. Stop seeing each other for a while."

She looked at me, then the crying started, then we both were. I tried to pull her close for a hug, but she wouldn't let me.

"Gracie, I love you so much. I want you with me. But if you won't even try, then maybe we don't belong together."

She pushed away, running into the house, crying. She came out with her keys, got in her car and drove away. I just stood there in the driveway.

I walked into the house. Evie was in the kitchen. I went over to her.

"Hi Alan, where's Gracie?"

"We just broke up."

"What? Alan, no. You love each other."

"Yes. She just left. I think I'm going home now. I'm not staying the weekend. Tell everyone and we'll talk soon."

She came and hugged me and I started crying.

"It's okay, it's okay, hopefully this is something temporary. Maybe sleep it off and see how you are in the morning?"

I pushed away. Shaking my head no. "I'll go pack, I'm going home tonight. Thank you for everything."

I went upstairs, tossing my clothes into my bag, grabbing my keys and a bottle of water and left. I waved at Evie and drove away.

Thanksgiving was approaching and my local friend Jim, who I ran with, invited me to Thanksgiving at his house. I tried to decline, but he wouldn't let me. He knew my story. We did eat well and I did enjoy the company.

I returned to one week every two months being on site. Gracie and I saw each other during every leader's meeting, usually online.

Hanukkah, the holidays and the shop winter break arrived and I was miserable. Mike and Evie invited me to join them. I knew I wouldn't be good company. So I stayed home, feeling sorry for myself.

I tried texting Gracie, "Happy Hanukkah." But got no reply. It was already snowing. I lived like a hermit for a few months.

Months passed with the new routine.

The winter was snowy, so much so I had to cancel my week down south. Every time I rescheduled it, we got hit with another major snowstorm.

During one meeting, before it started, Gracie said, "I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that cold and snow."

It was like a punch to my gut. Mike heard it and saw my reaction. He canceled the meeting and called me.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes, no, I don't know. I'm sorry I caused the meeting to be canceled. Is she dating anyone?"

"No. Evie and I have had her to the house for dinner a few times. She's not dating anyone. She and Evie have gone shopping a few times. She misses you a lot."

"Geeze, I don't want to hear that. I've been dating a little, but, as you know. No one can come close to her. God, I miss her so much. Why won't she even come up for a short visit? She won't even try."

"Alan, get out more. Run and exercise, it'll make you feel a bit better. I wish I could say this feeling will go away. But, I don't think it will. I think you two love each other and that will never go away."

"Thanks, Mike. Sorry I made you cancel the meeting."

"Don't worry about that. Gracie is knocking at my door. Take care of yourself. We'll talk soon."

I hung up.

Mid March

It had been a long, cold winter. It felt like the cold would never end. We had a few days where the weather was hot, not just warm, but hot. Then it turned cold again.

I didn't know which was colder, the weather or my current girlfriend. Soon-to-be ex-girlfriend, actually. That will happen tonight. I'm pretty sure it was mutual. I wanted to do it in person. I know everyone does it via texting these days, but that's so impersonal and cold. Even if it was breaking up.

"This isn't working Lisa."

"I know, Alan. Take care and enjoy life."

"You too, Lisa."

That was easy. 30 seconds later I was heading home.

The next day.

I ate a quick sandwich at lunch and decided to take a walk. It was in the forties, so a warmish jacket. Not bad for late March..

At least the sun was out. I decided to go up the street. Three houses down, a woman was walking my way and passing. "Hi," I said as we approached each other.

"Hi," She said back with a smile.

"Have a nice day," I said as we passed each other.

"Thank you, you too," She said.

I continued, feeling good, even in the cold. I turned left onto the sidewalk and left again on the next street. Partway down, another person approached me. Wait, it was the same woman.

Smiling, "Hi, again." I said.

She smiled back, "Hi and bye."

The story continues in My Daily Walk and ends in My Daily Walk 3.
