I don't know where this story came from. I had the basic beginning paragraph sitting in my possible future stories area for the last six or seven years and the story just wouldn't write. I was about to condemn it to the trash folder when a thought entered my head that said, "Let it tell itself." So, I started writing and let the story unfold through my fingers on the keyboard rather than through some deliberate process in my brain. The result is a lightly sexual coming-of-age Halloween story. I'm not sure how it will be received, but deep down I have the feeling that there is someone out there that really needs to hear this one.

Lucy Throckmorton was tired of being "Little Lucy." Everyone had called her that all her life. It was adorable when she was a small child. It was cute when she was eight years old. It was starting to wear thin when she was sixteen. It was totally insulting now that she was twenty. And yet, that is what everyone in the family and neighborhood called her. Maybe if she moved out of her parents' house and met new friends, she could forget all about "Little Lucy." But she was going to college in town because that college had the major she wanted... and it was much, much cheaper to just live at home and ride her bike or take the bus across town to class. She wanted to be a teacher and was planning on graduating without a huge debt that would take her the rest of her life to repay.
With a few new friends and more than a couple of miles between home and school, Little Lucy was fading into the past at last. And then the rains came. Lucy often rode in the rain, but this was a downpour. She couldn't just tough this one out. She would look like a drowned rat by the time she got to class. So, she stopped into one of the shops on Main Street to try to pick up a raincoat or rain suit or whatever. But everyone else in town also evidently needed a raincoat or rain suit or whatever, and the only thing left in any of the stores was a thick plastic hood and cape. It was on sale so she could almost afford it, but she cringed at the bright, bright red color. She almost left without it, but the lady behind the counter pointed at the sale price... and then said she would let her have it for half of that. It was ugly, and it had no sleeves... but it was cheap, and it would work, so Lucy bought it.
It turned out to be a very rainy fall. Lucy found herself wearing the cape and hood several days of the week well into October. She could put her arms through the cape, and the hood would keep her head dry. Her lightweight jacket would help repel the rain on her arms, while the hooded cape worked to keep her hair dry and protected her backpack. There was only one problem. A big problem in Lucy's mind. Her classmates started calling her Little Red Riding Hood. They all thought it was hilarious.
She didn't.
As Halloween approached, it was starting to turn cold, but the snows were weeks away, so Lucy was still able to ride her bike. She continued to wear the red cape and hood even though the rains had stopped. It kept her warm in her light jacket. If she got too warm while riding, she would pull her arms out of the cape and let it blow behind her, held in place only by the double snaps on the thick collar at the top of the cape. If she had to wait at a stoplight or something like that, she would pull the cape around herself and keep the wind from blowing through her jacket.
The end of October approached, and she was still wearing the red hood and cape. Janine, one of her friends-- actually more of a classmate or an acquaintance-- and who happened to be a member of one of the major sororities on campus, said to her, "Hey, Little Red Riding Hood, you want to come to a really awesome Halloween Party? I broke up with my boyfriend, so you can be my guest. There will be tons of boys crashing the party at the house. Just wear a sexy costume, and maybe you will find a new boyfriend." She smiled slyly and added, "Or maybe a girlfriend."
Lucy was thrilled. Janine had barely noticed her before this, and now she was inviting her to the biggest sorority Halloween party on campus. This was perhaps her chance to become a part of the elite college community. But what could she wear?
Lucy knew that she had no costumes that were sexy. She didn't even have any that were "grown up." So she went looking online. Typing "sexy" in the costume search brought up the typical sexy nurse, sexy teacher, sexy police officer, sexy fireman, and about a hundred others. Ordering late limited her selection, but everything was 75% off because it was so close to Halloween. After seriously looking at a couple dozen "Sexys," the search bar displayed a message: "See also slut or slutty."
Lucy checked the little box next to those words, and there it was! In big letters across the top of a page it said, "LITTLE RED RIDING SLUT!"
Lucy gasped at first, and then said softly to herself, "I guess this is fate." She pulled up the full description and price.
The costume was small-- at least in comparison to her huge red rain cape. It was a small, red-velvet-looking hooded cape with a matching red velveteen bikini covered by a sheer, red babydoll chemise. There were several options listed, including a pair of matching red semi-transparent pantyhose-- though it called them "style tights." There were also several sets of matching red high heels and a red sequined headband with a large red jewel in the front. The close-up of the jewel was labeled, "In case you don't remember what you did." Three more small images showed how the jewel hid a tiny camera and microphone that would record everything for you to replay in the morning.
Lucy added the headband but passed on the red high heels. She already had a pair, though she almost never wore them. No, that wasn't true. She had NEVER worn them outside of her house. They were "fuck-me-red" with bright red soles. She bought them on impulse and never actually got up the nerve to wear them. She would model them for herself in the mirror on the back of her bedroom door, but they never left the room. Often, when she modeled the red high heels for just herself, she was wearing nothing but those heels.
That image of herself naked in just her red high heels flashed through her mind. She quickly went to her closet and checked that those naughty red shoes were still there in their box at the back. She held them up next to her computer screen. They would be a close match, though they seemed to be a bit bolder red than the actual costume. But aren't "fuck-me-red" shoes supposed to be bold?
She imagined herself in the costume with her red high heels and suddenly smiled. Yes, her shoes were a more vibrant red than the costume. That would draw attention to them. That would make the costume even more slutty. She was smiling as she placed the order and paid the extra shipping for it to arrive in one day.
Halloween finally came, and Janine picked her up. It was drizzling a very cold rain, and Lucy reluctantly grabbed her heavy red, hooded cape and pulled it over her skimpy costume. She wasn't worried about getting her arms wet, but she wasn't sure what the rain would do to the velveteen fabrics. Also, she had spent a long time on her makeup, so she held the hood low over her face as she ran for the car. Once she got in, Janine said, "Oh good. I was hoping you would wear your cape."
Lucy frowned at that, but Janine continued exuberantly, saying how great the party was going to be. So Lucy just gave a deep sigh and relaxed back into the very comfortable seat in Janine's car. By bicycle or bus it took Lucy at least a half hour to get across town. Janine made it in less than ten minutes.
She pulled into a driveway that went around the sorority house and stopped under a side portico. "I can park out back," Janine said cheerily. "I have an umbrella so I will stay dry. Just wait for me in the hallway."
Lucy slipped into the side door and immediately turned left into a long, narrow hallway that was obviously a cloakroom. It was lined with ornate hooks holding various types of jackets and rain gear. She found a vacant hook and hung her heavy red cape. Then she walked toward the light at the other end of the long, narrow room.
As she approached the exit, she heard several women laughing loudly. One was saying, "Wait until Janine gets here with her catch. Then we will really have some fun." Lucy paused and waited in the relative darkness of the cloakroom as another voice said, "What is the prize for finding the dorkiest dork?" A third voice said, "I think first prize is a thousand; second is five hundred; and third is one hundred." A fourth voice asked, "Do you think they will all run out of here crying like they did last year?"
Lucy slowly stuck her head out of the closet. The laughing girls were all in a small alcove to her left, holding drinks in their hands and looking out the windows toward the parking lot. She walked quickly toward her right where she could see a large, open room decorated for a Halloween party.
At the edge of the room as she entered, there were several young women gathered around a punch bowl. She approached and was about to reach for a cup when a baritone male voice alongside her said quietly, "This punch bowl is safe. The one in the center of the room is the one that is spiked with Everclear. They figure their gullible Halloween Whores won't notice it and will get drunk enough to provide proper entertainment."
Lucy turned to see a dark-haired young man with deep brown eyes holding up a cup to her. "And I should believe you because?" she asked tentatively.
"Because this is my last time here," he replied, almost bitterly. "My name is Marcus Frederica. My girlfriend and I broke up over her sorority's Halloween Whores Tradition." He grimaced and then said, "But I have to be here to represent my fraternity." He grimaced again and continued, "When I agreed, Janine was still my girlfriend. She promised me that the Halloween Whores was a thing of the past and that the sorority would be following all of the rules from now on."
He poured some of the punch into the glass Lucy was now holding and then picked up one for himself and continued, "Then she started raving about how Little Red Riding Hood would win her the dorkiest-dork-of-the-party prize."
He gestured toward some chairs by the wall and asked, "Would you like to sit and talk for a while?"
"Sure, why not?" Lucy replied and walked with him to a small bay window with two very comfortable-looking chairs, which faced one another.
"I thought such hazing and harassment was against school rules," Lucy said softly.
"There's a loophole," Marcus said dryly. "I'm going to be a lawyer someday. I've already been accepted to law school. When I practice law, I hope I can find loopholes as well as this group of sorority sisters."
"What's the loophole?" Lucy asked. She could feel the red jewel buzz slightly against her forehead as it saved one video clip and readied for the next.
Marcus sighed deeply. "They invite townies to the party. They don't live on campus. They aren't members of the sorority, nor are they potential members. They are just people off the street in the eyes of the law."
"So they can do whatever they want to them?" Lucy asked, trying to keep the anger out of her voice.
"Unfortunately, yes," Marcus replied. "They get them drunk. They have them do horrendous things while they record it. And then, they threaten to release the full videos if any of them complain."
"What if one of them were to complain before any videos were taken?" Lucy asked, looking out at where Janine was standing with seven or eight other sorority sisters. They were giving directions to several very drunk, very naked young women who were attempting to dance the Can-Can. Janine was scanning the room, obviously looking for someone.
"She's not here," Janine said angrily. "I told her to wait in the doorway for me, but she wasn't there when I got back inside."
"She must have heard us talking, panicked, and fled into the night," one of the girls said.
"We can only hope," Janine said angrily. Then she huffed and said, "I was sure she would be the dorkiest dork here tonight."
"I can't stay and watch this," Marcus said bitterly, leaning forward in his chair as if to get up. "There is nothing I can do. Maybe someone else can think of something."
"Wait," Lucy said. "You need to take me with you. And there is something I must tell you."
"What?" Marcus said flatly, and Lucy leaned in very close to him. She whispered, "I am Little Red Riding Hood. And the jewel in my headband is a recorder. I have everything, including the naked Can-Can and the girls laughing about me while they were waiting for Janine to bring me inside."
Marcus' eyes seemed to roll slightly as he thought of possibilities. Then he stood, held out his arm, and said, "I think it is time for us to leave. I have a close friend who is a journalism major. He is always looking for that perfect story to get him noticed by the national news."
Lucy tapped her headband and said, "I think this will do it."
As they walked out the front door, Lucy glanced back at the cloakroom where her glossy red cape was hanging. "Why didn't she recognize me?" she thought, and then realized she had asked that question aloud.
Marcus answered softly, "Because she never looked past the cape. She never saw the real you beneath the cape. Sometimes Halloween is as important for what a person takes off as for what they put on."
"So I am just Little Red Riding Slut to you?" Lucy asked. Anger tinged her voice.
"No," answered Marcus quickly, "you are Lucy Throckmorton, a very brave, very determined woman whom I would definitely like to get to know better... after we visit with my reporter friend."
