Quick Takes 1 -- Triathlon
Years and years ago, before life and work and such wore me down, a buddy and I decided we would do an iron distance triathlon at a destination location. This requires months and months of training. While we both had racing experience, including winning age group hardware at a few sprint races, doing the full iron distance is a very different beast.
We and our wives rented a beach house for the race and a long weekend. We lived in different parts of the country and hadn't seen them in person in years.
I was one of the first ones in my age group out of the cold water. My feet were numb running from the water to the transition area to change into cycling gear. In a sprint, the swim-bike transition is mostly just throwing down your goggles and swim cap, putting on bike shoes, running to the mount line, and taking off. Less than a minute if you're good.
For this distance and for amateurs, you strip down completely in the tent and change from wetsuit to cycling gear, taking much longer.
I found my wife just before the bike mount line and gave her a quick kiss. It would be 5-6 hours before I saw her again, I thought.
But about 40 miles into the ride, in the middle of nowhere, I looked up from the road to my wife and my friend's wife at an intersection. I waved at them as I approached and just before I went past, they each lifted their shirts to flash me (and a couple of other nearby racers) their boobs. They said I had the biggest smile as I went by and almost fell.
That gave me a jolt of energy and I picked up the pace for several miles.
At about 75-80 miles, I saw them ahead again. It was a much more crowded location so I figured I wouldn't get another treat. I was wrong. They lifted their shirts when I was still 100 yards away and I slowed to get a good look, wave, and a big smile.
It gave me another burst of energy. My wife rarely flashed me in private, much less in public. And almost never even wore tops showing cleavage.
It turns out they had been texting each other before the race and then had plenty of time to talk on site. They had been on an "ironwives" chat group and had heard about wives flashing for encouragement. I never learned if there was an instigator about the flashing or they both just agreed to do it.
Either way, it worked! I was suitably encouraged!
The transition from bike to run in a sprint is again very different than for iron distance, unless you're a pro. In sprints, you hop off the bike at the dismount line, run to your bike rack spot, drop your helmet, put on running shoes and boom, you're off again. In iron distance, you gently climb off the bike and hand to a volunteer. You walk/jog to get your transition bag, and then change clothes entirely in the tent before hobbling back onto the course wondering what the fuck you were thinking when you signed up.
They even found a spot during the marathon to flash again, in view of other runners and spectators. Running by is a lot slower than cycling, so I and others had a lot more time to inspect, smile, and wave.
As I approached, I saw a hastily handwritten sign. It said "Cheer for a Flash!"
I saw that they were flashing anyone who yelled, not just me as I went by.
Holy fuck that's hot!
Huge smile as I went by, opting to use that for a walk break. Plus, my heart rate spiked as I saw them flashing me and anyone else that requested it. They even had a third woman who joined in sometimes. They said they probably flashed well over 100 times.
I smiled even broader after passing them. Just as I started to run again, I passed a guy and he looked at me and told me that the flashing had been the best part of his race. I agreed. I thought about telling him the one on the left was my wife, but decided to keep it a mystery.
Much of the long race becomes a blur. A cold hour of a swim, 5.5 hours of a bike ride, and 4.5 hours of a run -- much of it just vanishes. But I remember every second of the times I saw them flash me and others. Probably as much of a memory as crossing the finish line for what I consider one of my top lifetime accomplishments.
At the beach house the next morning, my buddy and I had woken up early (you can't just stop waking up early after 6 months of early morning workouts) and were making a huge breakfast for everyone. Huge. You burn a lot of calories.
I almost dropped the plate holding a dozen pancakes when the ladies came out for breakfast, each wearing only their swimsuit bottoms. My buddy did drop an egg onto the kitchen floor when he looked up after hearing me gasp and then cheer.
The ladies spent the entire day and evening topless, except when we went out to get more food. Even sitting on the couch watching a movie, they wore only small panties as they each leaned against us. They claimed they had long planned the topless day all along, but I later learned that their excitement from flashing on the course gave them the inspiration.
One time, my wife accidentally dripped some chip dip onto her chest. Without a pause in her conversation, she merely used her finger to rub the spilled dip off her breast and put it into her mouth. A moment later she gave me a sly wink.
It was a magical experience and memory.
