Son Paolo y Francesca
y también la reina y su amante
y todos los amantes que han sido
desde aquel Adán y su Eva
en el pasto del Paraíso.
Inferno V:129 (Borges, 1981)
I
The secrets are turning lethal, Francesca accepts, shaking from the aftershock. With her nipples still sore, she opens her eyes and watches Paolo struggle and choke while lying flat on the floor of the Red Room. From her vantage point, sitting on the chair right in front of him, she observes the entirety of his body. Her eyes follow his arms tightly pinned behind his back in a strict box tie. She traces the length of rope running from the double column tie on his ankles to the one on his wrists, hogtying him so tightly that his body arches backward, lifting his knees and shoulders a few centimeters off the ground. But her attention locks on the rope running from his ankles straight to his neck, wrapped three times underneath his jaw and forcing him to actively arch even further backward just to catch a breath.
How naive her old terrors seem now. The eldritch retributions she had once imagined for the uninitiated, transmutation into lead or spontaneous combustion, feel like children's fables. Paolo's downfall is entirely secular; the inevitable fallout of cause and effect, driven by a layman's exposure to knowledge beyond his ken. She would offer her own life for his but the cosmos does not barter.
Her interpretive skills once unraveled the deepest arcana of The Great Work and propelled her to the apex of the Order, but now, she brings them all into question. She has convinced herself the convergence of signs and symbols that led her to Paolo was the fulfillment of a prophecy. Theoretical conclusions are, nonetheless, irrelevant now, for this room is not an abstract exercise in exegesis within a cloistered abbey. This is the real world; Paolo might not last another fifteen minutes, and there is no indication he is up for the challenge. The Oath of Silence that precludes her from disclosing the secrets of the Magisterium reduces her to a simple witness left to wonder what he might be thinking, whether he realizes these could be his last moments, and whether he will try to meet her stare again.
Forced to remain aroused, and driven by a pure, reflexive instinct to shake her foreboding, she focuses her attention back onto Paolo. The warm sensation on her mound rebounds as her eyes drift to the ties straining his muscles, making them swell beneath his bronzed skin, pearled with a damp glaze of sweat. The ropes cut deep into his flesh, scorching his skin around the hemp, and his gasping and wheezing further stokes the sexual hunger sparked in her. For a second, a light burning sensation intertwines with a gentle throbbing that spreads throughout her labia and groin; in the exact spot where Paolo's tongue had been worshipping her only moments before.
Francesca lets her hand slide down the skin of her freshly trimmed delta, meeting a sharp, bristling resistance beneath her fingers and inducing a feverish electric shivering around her clit. The titillating shudder prompts her to cross her legs bringing her foot so close to Paolo's face that she can feel the hot air of his constant gasping and sputtering caressing her toes.
The tingling sensation brings Francesca back to reality, a rush of guilt assaults her for the erotic diversion, but she is cornered. It is an impossible task to keep herself aroused while being aware of the stakes at play. She catches her own reflection in the mirror on the wall across from her and looks into her own eyes, sending her mind traversing a forest of feelings and memories. Paolo might be the one bound and choking, but she is the one trapped and drowning in a labyrinth of arousal, guilt, and dread.
II
The paths that had brought Francesca and Paolo together seemed to have been drafted in heaven, but paved in hell. The impossible sequence of events that led her to him, alongside the ardent fascination sparked between them, could not have been sheer chance. Driven by an unremitting urge to be with each other, they had navigated waves of social reprobation, shame, and the threat of eternal reckoning. In her mind, that history, and their ultimate victory over those adversities, felt like the auspicious omen she had been trained to recognize. Yet, as their daily exchange of words and dreams let her draw a mental map of his character, it dawned on her that he was the prisoner of his own barriers.
He lacked the capacity to give:
"Why are you with me?" she asked on one occasion.
"I cannot live without your emerald-green eyes," he answered.
"You won't have any control, I will hurt you or worse, and I cannot tell you why," she continued.
"But I need you," he protested.
He lacked the capacity to connect:
"Have you ever cried?" she asked another time.
"I am a master of myself," he replied.
"But, have you cried?" she insisted.
"No," he said. "I strive to be strong."
Paolo's lack of eye contact during vulnerable moments stood as a silent testament to his emotional limitations. Occasionally, purely by accident, he would meet her look, only to withdraw his gaze the instant he realized it. Yet, in those split seconds, she read him through his eyes, a skill only Grand Masters of the Order, like herself, possessed. For while language requires time to unfold its adamantine syntax, ensnaring meaning in the slow process of coding and decoding the message, the eyes convey everything at once. At a glance, they reveal a whole life, the intricacies of a personality, and an inscrutable constellation of intentions. His fear of losing her to his own shortcomings, his deep insecurity regarding his own worth, and his inability to accept himself exactly as he was constituted the foundations of his emotional shield; all of it was instantly evident to her, piercing right through his vacuous rhetoric.
The temptation to abandon the endeavor was strong; she refused to edit a man who should have finished his own rough draft. She would have walked away if not for the convergence of signs auguring Paolo as the epochal event any head of the Order could have ever dreamt of.
To common adepts versed in The Lore, the Grand Masters were living vessels guarding the most coveted hermeneutic skills, the keys required to elucidate the hidden patterns of the written word. Yet the Grand Masters themselves were privy to a higher truth: the very principles that allowed them to reap secrets from the pages of the apocrypha were the same principles that allowed them to reap secrets from the pages of the universe. It was the power to fathom the grand network of cause and effect governing the cosmos. "Quod est inferius, est sicut quod est superius," the Tabula prayed, after all.
That esoteric knowledge was more than a tool of revelation; under the right conditions, it was a mechanism to fundamentally alter reality. Once in an eon, fates aligned to unveil a portal of transcendence to a Master. If the Master succeeded in deciphering the cryptic signs leading to their predestined partner, they could forge a path toward the ultimate fulfillment of their craft: to merge with nature's own will. Nevertheless, Francesca knew the stakes were heaven-high. Her very existence, and Paolo's, was on the line.
Her soul fractured under the weight of an impossible decision: to abandon the path destiny offers but once across millennia, or to commit to an enterprise that could lead them both to perdition. However, fate ambushed her amidst her deep misgivings. It manifested as the contour of a symbol whose deciphering crystallized her conviction to proceed. Her semiotic draft emerged by dismantling the narratives born from men's contrived minds:
The distorted interpretation of Jesus washing his followers' feet as a mere display of humility struck her with the force of a revelation. The god who demanded a devotion so fierce that love for one's own kin must resemble hatred, and who, in his hunger, cursed a fig tree simply for being out of season, did not suddenly snap into humility. The hermeneutic key lay in the metaphors of the road as one's life and the feet as the canvas where that life gets chronicled. Born sinners, the apostles' feet were soiled with the dirt of their wicked trails; Jesus had to wash their feet to bring them onto the straight path, to save them.
But the crux of the matter was that, prior to Jesus's entrance into Jerusalem, Magdalene had to wash his feet. For Jesus to save his brethren, Magdalene had to save him first. It was a cosmic truth well beyond what men's fragile egos could ever hope to withstand. And thus, distortion was patriarchy's only refuge.
If even the Magdalene had to redeem a god, Francesca reasoned, what hope had she left to elude the undertaking with simple mortals? Sub Rosa might have been a delightful dream but idealism offered no sanctuary in a world of raw matter.
"There is a quest I must fulfill, but, if you come with me, it might cost you everything," she told him as a last warning.
"I'm nothing without you," was his unsurprising reply.
Paolo's stubbornness was not at all surprising. As a neophyte, he didn't understand the source of his attraction and, thus, had no hope of controlling it. He also did not understand the stakes. Yet, Francesca was limited in what she could share or explain; she was not allowed to coach him or give him any hints. This was in part because of her Oath of Silence, but also, more importantly, because the Ars Regia demanded absolute authenticity; performative behavior was proscribed. Any indiscretion from her could lead him to fall for empty mimicry, and that alone would ensure his downfall. Such is the nature of the knowledge she so fiercely guarded: it can mean the end of those who receive it if they are unprepared.
Not without hesitation, Francesca brought Paolo to the Azoth: a colossal, windowless fortress of stone stretching seven blocks wide and twelve stories high. Most adepts lived and died without ever hearing its name; only a select few even knew it existed. As the Grand Master of the Order, she was the sole recipient and guardian of a vast swath of secrets regarding the monolith, including how to navigate its enigmatic walls to traverse the Black, White, Yellow, and Red rooms. Yet, despite occupying the Order's highest position, she had never once set foot inside. There was no doubt that many more mysteries awaited her within.
Upon their entry, the Black room received them. Elegant and dimly lit, the space featured a triangular layout that was narrow at the threshold and widened toward the back, beneath a ceiling two stories tall. A massive floor-to-ceiling mirror dominated the left wall, flanked by a shelf holding an array of specialized gadgets. Taking him by the hand, Francesca led Paolo before the glass, forcing him to face his own image. She stepped behind him, wrapping her arms around his chest to reach his shirt buttons. One by one she undid them, sliding the cloth from his shoulders and dropping it to the floor. Hugging him from behind, she tilted her head slightly to catch their shared reflection. She relished the contrast of her gilded skin against the bronzed tones of his bare torso, her emeraldine eyes briefly locking onto his dark brown ones in the silver surface.
His betraying eyes exposed the intense desire he harbored for her: callow hopes for a passionate evening, and a litany of immature fantasies born from a desperate yearning to matter to her. While she could perceive the raw strength of his emotions, she knew they would not guide him through this crucible. She swept her hands down his frame; grabbing his arms, she guided his palms backward over the curve of her hips. The silky fabric of her skirt bunched beneath his fingers, pressing against her Mound of Venus and translating his clumsy movements into a rich, textured caress. As their bodies made contact, their breathing deepened, falling into a rough, stimulated synchronization.
Francesca broke the spell deliberately. She snatched a piece of rope from the table, binding his wrists in a swift, clean double-column tie. A naive smile formed on Paolo's lips; until she reached upward. Catching the carabiner of a line dangling from a ceiling hardpoint, she snapped it through his bounds. Before he could process the click of the metal, she snagged the opposite line of the overhead pulley system. One sharp yank hoisted his arms high. Simultaneously, she caught him by the hair, forcing his head down as the tension coerced his body downward into a punishing strappado kneel.
Once Paolo was controlled, Francesca took a pair of scissors, slicing through the remaining fabric of his trousers and tearing them away until he was entirely naked, completely exposed to the cold air. She secured her end of the line to a wall anchor, keeping his arms tautly suspended. Paolo made a weak, instinctive attempt to resist as she brought a silicone ball-gag to his lips. Anticipating the struggle, she gave the suspension rope a sharp, testing tug. The sudden strain drew an incipient moan from his throat, and Francesca instantly slipped the sphere past his teeth, buckling it tight to muffle all subsequent sound.
It was Francesca's turn to undress. The metal of the shears bit through the laces holding her gown, then sliced cleanly through the shoulder straps. The garment slid downward, exposing her shoulders and the upper part of her breasts. A gentle pull of her hand brought it all down to the floor, letting the crisp air imprint a refreshing sensation on her entire body. Because the Opus Magnum was the fulfillment of the Thélème of nature, only in a state of total nudity could either of them tread further. Full acceptance of themselves, and of the world as it truly exists, stood as a peremptory condition for advancement. Artificial contrivances like clothing, designed to quell irrational shame and fatuous morals, were not merely superfluous here; they were downright blasphemous, a spurious dross within the realm of the Ars Arcana.
There was one final detail to address; as an uninitiated subject, Paolo could not be permitted to stand upright within the Azoth. Francesca retrieved a heavy wooden humbler from the table. Crouching low behind the kneeling man, she reached between his thighs and firmly caught his testicles, guiding them through the open device. With practiced precision, she closed the trap; the tension of the locked organs kept pressing the wood against his thighs without moving and precluded him from standing up.
A sharp prickling rushed along the nape of Francesca's neck at the sight of the stretched skin of his scrotum, contouring tightly over the twin shapes beneath and mapping every ridge and vein under the strain. This visual alignment of flesh and wood triggered something primal deep within her. Driven by the impulse, she reached out to cup the trapped organs in her palm. The touch sent a shimmering ripple through the whole of her body, eliciting a sharp, helpless squirm from Paolo.
Standing up, she grabbed a collar from the table, buckled it around his throat, and snapped a leash in place. Only then did she untie the line from the wall anchor, lowering his arms smoothly before unclipping the overhead carabiner. She stood upright and looked back into the mirror. The sight of herself towering over a subdued Paolo, forced to his knees, eyes cast downward, surged through her with sudden, fierce confidence. Her interpretations were right. She had deciphered the signs correctly. The quest was to be conquered. Taking a deep breath, she turned toward the shadows at the back of the room.
She began to walk with slow, deliberate steps, guiding Paolo by the leash. He could only manage an agonizingly slow crawl, advancing forward on his knees in tiny, restricted movements to keep the humbler from pulling his testicles too far back. Francesca's bare soles could appreciate the cool smoothness of the stones beneath them, wonderfully chiseled by the finest masons on earth. Yet, she was keenly aware that no matter how flawlessly polished the masonry was, it would always be brutally harsh against his bare knees.
Eventually, they reached the innermost depths of the room where the Chrysopoeia Gate awaited them. A massive, double-leaf portal grown from heavy monocrystalline silicon, it stood two stories high and loomed so wide that ten souls might pass through abreast. The substance was a triumph of alchemical craft, hailed as a promethean feat, part glass, fully crystal, almost metallic, and highly specular, yet retaining the essence of stone, all fused into a singular miracle. The absolute purity and perfect regularity of its atomic lattice rendered it the sole vessel capable of containing alkahest. An embossed relief lent the gate a monumental gravity: the towering form of an androgyne thrice the stature of a mortal man, bearing two heads, the right a woman's, the left a man's, trampling a dragon beneath their feet. This sacred figure was encircled by an ovular arc, crowned by the words OMNIA SUNT RES BINA, spaced evenly along the periphery.
Francesca knew that whatever lay beyond dwelled in the liminal space between the lore she had inherited and pure myth, leaving her only to hope she possessed the clarity to separate the two, and the strength to guide both herself and Paolo through the mysteries ahead. In the midcurrent of her thoughts, the monumental doors began to open. A torrent of brilliant light flooded across the threshold, completely blinding her, obliterating all form until a few moments passed and her eyes grew accustomed to the fierce intensity.
"The Rebis," Francesca said faintly, stripped of her breath as she beheld nearly a score of naked bodies standing in a semi-circle inside the bright, White Room. Mystical lore had described them exactly like the representation on the gate: two-headed, otherworldly, rigid creatures; a symmetry of contrasting forces brought forth for mere balance. The reality before her eyes exposed those depictions as a clumsy, almost misleading approximation; their true nature surpassed the numinous. In their bodies, femininity and masculinity coalesced in a harmonic interweaving of opposite principles forging the very fabric of the universe itself.
Her eyes traced the impossible lines of their forms as each conjoined their elements in a unique way. One possessed a face with a smooth, satin-skinned feminine profile on the right side, and a masculine one on the left, the two melting into each other along an asymmetrical, fluid boundary, beautifully arranged to enhance their striking aesthetic features. At the torso, this pattern inverted, showcasing a round, perky breast on the left and a chiseled chest on the right. The perfect blend was charged with a deep, if intangible sensuality Francesca could not resist. It only got stronger when she looked underneath the navel. Right at the crest of a well-trimmed delta, a vagina found its place, its plush, prominent labia gradually cascaded into a hanging scrotum holding a pair of testicles.
A bit farther away another Rebis drew Francesca's eye. A woman's head sat poised atop a powerful, masculine frame, where a plush layer of meticulously groomed hair traced the hard, heavy contours of their pectorals. From those smooth, athletic shoulders descended two silken, soft arms that ended in broad, strong hands. Francesca's gaze drifted downward, tracking the taut expanse of the abdomen until it met the landscape of their pelvic region. There, a breathtaking anatomy was sculpted, with phallus laying side by side with a soft vulva in perfect harmony. It was a labyrinth of crevices and shadows, arranged with a libidinous artistry so alluring it made her lightheaded, and lost her in a reverie of the heat that would be ignited if she were to explore it by touch and tongue.
Still another Rebis possessed a form completely blended, eschewing stereotypical gendered attributes for a seamless, dual grace. Alternating shades of skin reinforced their dual nature. Their symmetry was remarkable. In a perfect vertical line defined by their navel, a phallic shaft protruded directly over a prominent clitoris which itself rested just above a scrotum with a single testicle that then fused with their perineum, like aligned planets foretelling a golden bliss. There was not a single body that did not elicit lascivious thoughts; the creatures were erotic dreams cast in flesh, rendering the dichotomy of male and female foolish, artificial, and dull.
She was caught utterly off guard by the way their bare presence did not just arouse her; it awakened an inexorable craving to take her arousal to the frontiers of human libido, an internal ache of an intensity she had never known. The feeling transcended a natural desire for pleasure; it was a sudden thirst for concupiscence that made its pursuit more vital than the air she breathed. It was a matter of survival that brooked no delay, a primal compulsion to surrender herself entirely to the full spectrum of pleasure her body was capable of sensing.
Their vibrant youth was not lost on Francesca. The Rebis manifested utmost health, vigor, and seduction, yet they were ancient. Plato had already caught a glimpse of them centuries ago; many were older than Earth, some were as old as time. But time did not have jurisdiction over the embodiment of alchemical eroticism.
"Tecum sit tui notitia, dum labyrinthus in speculum tuum transmutatur," all of the Rebis said in unison, astounding Francesca with an overwhelming whisper that resonated off every wall of the room with a clarity she could never have imagined. This hierophanic sound was the result of their vocal cords doing far more than merely harmonizing; they vibrated in perfect phase synchrony, as if uttered by a single throat. Each breath was attuned as if drawn by the same chest, each heartbeat aligned as if pumped by the same heart; and every movement choreographed as if performed by a single body.
Francesca froze when she saw one of the Rebis approaching her. (And yes, Rebis is both their singular and plural; Rebises is a common solecism that betrays the layman to the adepts, for their multiplicity has no bearing on the unicity of their essence.) They slipped their left hand behind Francesca's back, very softly, and with a swift, sweeping movement of their right one under her thighs, lifted her into the air like a groom carrying his bride across a nuptial threshold. Their impossible strength further astonished her; they held her aloft using little more than the tips of their fingers, treating her with the delicate care one might show to a fragile mercury-glass ornament. Nothing in their expression or the smooth contour of their muscles showed a single ounce of effort.
Looking directly into Francesca's eyes, the creature gave a silent command to release her grip on Paolo's leash. She complied, only to see another Rebis already closing the distance, carrying him up with the same effortless grace.
The Rebis placed her flat on her back upon a low stone slab, passing a right hand over her head and down toward her shoulder, a gentle caress explicitly meant to coax her into relaxation. They softly positioned Francesca's hands at her sides with the palms facing upward, then separated her feet just enough to ensure a resting posture, leaving her sex fully exposed.
Next, they retrieved a small wooden comb and a pair of scissors. Bringing the comb to the crest of her pelvis, they ran it downward through her pubic hair with absolute softness. As the teeth glided along her skin, she felt the erotic tug of her hair straightening under the smooth tension. When the comb passed over her labia, a sudden rush of blood flooded the tissue, blooming into a mild sensation of warmth.
The Rebis then aligned the comb parallel to the opening of her vagina, allowing the teeth to shallowly catch the threshold. With a subtle nudge to part the outer folds, they drew the comb toward her right side; the mild friction pulled at her outer labium, coaxing the delicate inner petal to peek out. They repeated the process on the left. The tender drag of the teeth across her skin and the gentle, rhythmic pulls sank Francesca into a deep, tingling trance.
On a second pass, the Rebis pressed the comb back against the centerline of her sex, applying a firmer pressure before sweeping it to the right. Midway to the thigh, they tilted the comb and trimmed the exposed hair. The rhythmic, metallic snip of the scissors soothed her to the brink of sleep, yet she was continually pulled back to awareness by mild arousal waves stemming from the repetitive, almost mechanical caresses. It intensified a notch when the Rebis reached her perineum, guiding the comb carefully but firmly across that sensitive region while the scissors continued their precise work. When the process was finished, her pubis was left with a neat, immaculate design; a dark, plush shadow of trimmed hair contrasting sharply against her gilded skin.
The Rebis poured a drizzle of anointing oil into her navel, just enough to fill it like a small, precious chalice. Dipping their index fingers into the pool, they used them as quills, inscribing an invisible scripture upward across the silken vellum of her torso. The movement felt both soft and firm against her skin, the fingers perfectly synchronized, yet each carrying a distinct personality and nature despite being governed by the same body.
Upon reaching her breasts, they ascended carefully, leaving a glistening trace of the elixir in their path. Once they met the areolas, they circled the borders where the skin changed color. Francesca felt her nipples stiffen and blood rush to her chest, even as she sank into a deeper sense of peace. The fingers then swept down from her breasts and climbed toward her neck, leaving a path of goosebumps behind them. They traced the subtle lines of her veins, gliding along the jawline to come to rest at the soft hollows behind her ears.
The Rebis dipped their fingers into her navel once more, tracing horizontally toward her flanks before sweeping upward along her ribs and arching into her armpits. As the fingers mapped the path, a pleasurable tickle invaded her, softening into a tender caress as they descended the inner length of her arms. Passing across her palms, the Rebis's fingers finally met Francesca's own index fingers, pressing them firmly for a few lingering seconds.
The fragrance of the elixir continued to fill Francesca's lungs. Its sweet, floral aroma lulled her mind and suspended her senses, a trance only briefly broken when, for a third time, the Rebis dipped their fingers into her chalice. This time they headed downward toward her thighs, gliding the entire length to her knees, continuing down her shins, and smoothing over the tops of her feet. The movement finished at the tips of her second toes, which the Rebis pressed too for a few quiet moments.
For a fourth time, the Rebis brought their index fingers back to her omphalos. After dipping them, they traced straight down toward her pelvis, side by side, leaving a single, thick, oily line. As they crossed the border between her soft skin and the beginning of her fuzzy delta, a bristling sensation expanded throughout her core. A wave of heat emerged and grew as the fingers separated right where her labia began, each following the soft curves all the way to the bottom. The subtle vibration against her skin, caused by the friction of their fingers against her trimmed hair, sent a sudden shiver of desire straight through her.
Meanwhile, the Rebis's fingers continued downward, bracketing her labia until they finally joined again at the very base, right where her perineum started. As the fingers descended through the sensitive area, a powerful wave of warmth flooded her entire body. She was becoming deeply aroused; her nipples stiffened further, and she could feel a sudden blush burning her cheeks. The Rebis stopped right in the middle of her perineum, pressing it softly for a prolonged moment.
When the moment ended, the Rebis carried Francesca from the slab where she was just anointed and into the Yellow Room. All with their effortless grace; fingertips barely touching her as if she was a fragile glass feather. Another stone slab was in the center. A golden dome ceiling caught the light of the surrounding torches, bathing the space in a warm, amber glow.
The Rebis laid her face-up on the slab and arranged her limbs into a relaxed position, guiding her arms to her sides. They parted her legs so that her feet rested just beyond shoulder-width apart; exposing her freshly shaved and anointed vagina. The steady crackle of the torches acted as a lullaby and warmed the room, settling a deep sense of peace over her. Francesca closed her eyes, took a calming breath, and exhaled slowly, briefly falling into a deep state of relaxation.
When she opened her eyes again, she saw a Rebis right in front of her, holding Paolo in the air with just one hand. He was handled just as carefully as she had been, lifted with no effort whatsoever, as if he were nothing more than a paper doll. She noticed the humbler and gag were gone. Instead, his thighs were now bound tightly to his ankles, each leg intricately wrapped in a futomomo. His hands remained secured behind his back, but a new harness spanned his chest. Fashioned from rope loops placed just above and below his pectorals, the tight binds bunched his muscles, forcing them up like small breasts and making his nipples more prominent.
A quick gleam from the torchlight on his crotch drew her attention to a shiny metal chastity cage, its matching ring confining his testicles and securing the device over his penis. In it, she saw more than just an instrument inducing prurient desires within her; she read it as a vindication, as the Azoth accepting Paolo as a companion on her journey. The Red Room would annihilate anyone in it who was not in a high state of sexual arousal, and that was a secret she was not sure she could divulge. The device was certainly a useful and alluring instrument to that end.
The Rebis gently lowered Paolo onto his knees, placing them right between Francesca's feet. Reaching up, the Rebis grabbed a length of rope hanging from a ceiling pulley system and secured it to the back of Paolo's harness. They tightened the rope upward to ensure he could remain upright, then pointed in succession to Francesca's right foot and Paolo's chest, indicating she should use her leg to steady him if he tilted forward. The Rebis then handed the free end of the rope to Francesca, giving her total control to tighten or slacken his position.
Upon setting her foot against his pectoral, Francesca noticed Paolo briefly locked eyes with her, only to divert his gaze down toward her trimmed delta the moment he realized she was watching. To force his eyes back up, she slackened the rope just enough to let him tilt further toward her. Francesca then raised her left foot, pressing it beneath Paolo's chin to nudge his head upward, compelling him to look her directly in the eyes. He tilted his head back slightly but closed his eyes, prompting Francesca to pinch his nose gently between her big and second toes to reclaim his attention. Paolo slipped free of her grip with a subtle turn of his head, immediately pressing a soft, tender kiss against her sole. Realizing he was interpreting her actions as mere foreplay, and unwilling to risk betraying her duty of secrecy, Francesca decided to simply play along.
The symbolism of the situation was not lost on her. The sultry cadence of his lips kissing the bottom of her foot prompted her to wonder if he had ever thought of all the paths her feet had taken throughout her life. Her mind tried to slip into the dark recollections of her tragic birth and the heavy feelings of inadequacy that followed, but the tender moment anchored her. It allowed her, instead, to focus on her path toward self-love and the quiet vulnerability of her early years. She was pulled back as Paolo's steady, rhythmic breath streamed through her toes, an ethereal caress that briefly warmed her heart.
But it was a fight between mind and body; her thoughts kept trying to immerse her in the memories of the crippling distrust imprinted on her soul by her chaotic upbringing. Yet, as Paolo's mouth explored further along the geography of her foot, the physical intimacy sheltered her, validating her subsequent path to resilience and curiosity. His nose softly grazed the tips of her toes, a sensual expedition that sparked a mild tickling sensation, which her body translated into a delicate tremor at the nape of her neck.
As Paolo's kisses melted into warm, wet licks, Francesca drifted into the memory of her initiation into the Order of the Great Work; a hard journey that chiseled her character into a sanctuary that became an escape from her past, ushering her into a renewed sense of purpose and pride. This pride flared as his soft lips and tongue descended along the curve of her arch. He took meticulous care with each touch, as if the moisture left by his mouth were a sacred varnish meant to seal his devotion permanently against her sole.
Her mind surrendered completely to the memory of her ascension to the highest echelon of the Order. Her investiture as a Grand Master, the sole heir to the world's most powerful and coveted hermeneutic discipline, was the absolute manifestation of her power. Yet, even as the velvety strokes of his tongue sent deep waves of pleasure radiating from her foot upward, she found her right leg growing weary of bracing against his chest. Shifting her weight with deliberate command, she guided her left foot downward to relieve the weary limb, raising her opposite leg towards his face until her toes slipped directly into his mouth.
Paolo lovingly welcomed the intrusion, methodically suckling each toe in turn, enfolding them with his lips and caressing the tips with his tongue before moving seamlessly to the next. Francesca let herself relish the contrast between the plush warmth of his mouth and the crisp, cooling chill of the air on her damp skin. This tender massage soothed her as her mind retraced the winding path she had traversed, the relentless pursuit of her dreams, her desperate quest for love, and the prison of an arranged marriage to a man she never cared for. And, of course, the memory of that fateful book which ultimately set in motion an improbable chain of events, guiding her across Paolo's path and binding her irrevocably to him into this very moment.
Relaxing his jaw, Paolo let the fullness of her foot claim the intimate space inside his mouth. His tongue combed the pads of her sole, seeking to taste the lingering heat of his own kisses, and then wove between her toes like the courtship dance of a bird seducing its mate. To Francesca, the hot, rhythmic drag of his throat expanding and contracting with devotion was a testament to his unrelenting desire. It sent a wave of heat straight up her leg, passing through her abdomen and chest to compress her body in a subtle gasp. Seeing Paolo so eager and aroused, worshipping her in that manner, induced a mirrored excitement within her.
Time was bleeding away; the Red Room awaited. Francesca deemed that their state of arousal was suitable to proceed, yet her mind drifted with apprehension. Success could not be achieved without an intense connection between them. While his strong desire and affection for her were evident, the purest form of intimacy, the one required in the Magnum Opus, relied upon the principles of will and authenticity. Its foundation lay in recognizing the parts of themselves also present in the other, identifying a shared essence of character that made them, to an extent, one.
Paolo's barriers, nonetheless, had precluded Francesca from his true inner world, and she was uncertain he had ever entered hers. Intrusive thoughts assaulted her as anxiety lodged in her chest; the requirement for secrecy loomed over her conscience, suffocating her. The distress compounded with an urgency for survival. She grasped that their lives hinged on her ability to manage a delicate and complex balance: keep herself on edge without climax, leading and commanding without words, and building intimacy with his closed soul. She needed him to look into her eyes so she could get a glimpse of what lay deep in his heart.
She concocted a gamble: if the Yellow Room was the chamber to ignite their carnal desires, it could also be the chamber to forge a deep bond. Sex and eroticism, after all, were enhancers of intimacy; she just needed a window she could crack open into his soul. There was, of course, some risk, since a man could rarely remain aroused after orgasm; but the chastity device reassured her. In the current situation, it seemed the only viable solution, even if the stakes were so high that the gamble hardly felt rational.
Francesca brought both feet firmly against his chest and slackened the rope holding him upright. By slowly drawing her knees toward her torso, she guided his weight forward, making him tilt toward her. He pivoted over his knees, tilting downward over the stone. Halfway down, she gripped the rope tight and parted her legs, scooting back to anchor him. She let the hemp slide through her palms, letting him sink slowly between her thighs until his face was buried into her mound, his body resting horizontally over the slab. His chin hit the cold stone, his face completely pressed into her pelvis, his nose buried deep against her labia.
Paolo's deep exhales rushed air across the skin of her vulva, revealing how the anointing oil the Rebis had applied had sensitized her skin with a tingling sensation. His warm tongue glided up the crease of her left thigh. The soft, dragging touch made her muscles go heavy, even relaxing, counteracting to some extent the angst building up in her mind. Her mouth parted, and with every stroke, her breathing became slower and deeper. As Paolo changed sides, she felt the contrast of warm humidity against the cool air drying the area he had just worked over.
Grounding his tongue at the very base of her vulva where it met the perineum, he began a slow, upward stroke. He followed the contours of her labia without parting them, his tongue gliding over her skin as if he were meticulously varnishing a flawless piece of porcelain. The wet warmth reverberated through her body as a gentle quiver, arching her toes and painting a soft blush upon her cheeks. Bringing his head back down, he trailed tender kisses through the soft cushions of her labia all the way back to her perineum, only to sweep upward again with a long, smooth lick before tracing the opposite side with his lips.
Francesca felt her breath and his quicken in tandem. Paolo tilted his head and gently drew one of her inner lips into his mouth, his tongue softly caressing the edge of the captive flesh. As he shifted his head slightly upward, the delicate skin stretched, briefly exposing the wet vestibule of her vagina to the cool air of the room. This sudden, evaporative chill sent a tingle through her nipples, causing them to stiffen, and she cupped both hands over her breasts to feed the mounting sensation.
A slight adjustment in Paolo's posture briefly drew her focus to him as he struggled to reach a better angle. Seeing him framed between her thighs, straining against his restraints in a desperate eagerness to reach her, made the heat in her abdomen flare into bloom. Paradoxically, her growing desire was loaded with irony; it served as a stark reminder of the urgent need to connect, resurrecting the very angst that had driven her to initiate this entire gamble. Crucially, this encroaching anxiety began to threaten her arousal, menacing their chances of ever reaching the Red Room. In her mind, the high-stakes wager was rapidly mutating into a treacherous labyrinth, imprisoning both her body and her soul.
All the same, the moment Paolo's mouth migrated to the opposite side, reprising the rhythm against her other labium, she was pulled back onto the path of arousal. The intensity of her sensations spiked as his tongue delved deeper into the intricate folds, finally reaching the vestibule under her labia and triggering rhythmic, sensual contractions across her abdomen. He circled the periphery of the portal, periodically trailing his warmth back down to her perineum before returning to trace the sensitive ring in the opposite direction. A slow, tenuous throbbing began to ache within her, mirroring the exact cadence with which he traversed the soft, warm boundaries of her vagina. With every circuit, the intensity mounted, adopting a rhythm entirely its own, coaxing her muscles to coil and transforming her passive reception into a synchronized waltz.
The brush of air from Paolo's nostrils, paired with the insistent nuzzling against her labia, triggered a sudden spasm across Francesca's abdomen, prompting her to prop herself up on her forearms. The shifted vantage point granted her a clearer view of her lover, his face buried in her flesh as he struggled to quell an unbridled desire. Lost to his own pleasure, Paolo's eyes flicked open and drifted upward. He didn't seem to realize that her shift in posture gave her a perfect view of them. For a few suspended heartbeats, their gazes locked. Almost instantly, he shuttered his eyes and ducked his head back down, feigning a hyper-focused devotion to his oral task. But it was too late. In those fleeting seconds, Francesca read him entirely. She saw, with devastating clarity, his raw thirst for her body and the performative persona he'd hoped would secure her love, a flawless facade mapped out with grand dreams for their future. Yet, it all remained entirely hollow. Beneath it all, there was still nothing; not a single shift in attitude that might actually deepen their bonds.
A painful vacuum hollowed out her stomach and a cold draft of absolute doubt flooded her psyche. She had miscalculated. It was a fatal mistake, realized too late: this entire erotic endeavor would never crack Paolo open to reveal a more authentic self. Her brain blanked with angst, and her jaw clenched beneath the suffocating weight of her foreboding as she searched for answers, for a path forward, for meaning, for a glimpse of what awaited ahead. She found no comfort in history; there were no surviving accounts of Masters who had crossed into the Azoth and returned. Though her years of studying ancient codices and metaphors pointed toward an inexorable demise, even if the exact nature of that fate remained a mystery. Whether a failed quest meant some alchemical brew would turn them to lead, or whether they would be entirely consumed by spontaneous combustion, was nothing more than conjecture.
The storm brewing in her mind did not shield her from the effects of Paolo's worship. His continuous caresses stoked her arousal, the mounting throbbing deep within her core elicited an even more intense spasm across her mound. It forced her pelvis to clench, perfectly mirroring her jaw. This dual stimulation tore her between the crushing agony of her consciousness and the indomitable libido of her flesh. She felt like a blade of iron being tempered between the hottest fire in her pelvis and the coldest ice in her thoughts, leaving her abdomen so intensely contracted by both forces that it hardened, utterly unyielding, like the strongest steel.
The mounting physical and emotional tension shattered her focus, pulling her abruptly from her thoughts and laying her flat against the stone slab. Her arms, now free, acted on raw instinct; she seized Paolo by the hair as her breathing shattered into heavy, desperate pants. Abandoning all restraint, she overpowered him, claiming total control of his movements to force him upward.
She guided him along the slick contours of her labia, and he surrendered to the trajectory, letting his tongue map every hidden crevice and fold. She dictated his pace, ensuring his broad, moist muscle swept directly beside her clitoris. With every deliberate stroke, a fierce, electric tingling invaded her, tightening her chest and sending a breathless tremor rippling through her core. She dragged him down to her perineum and swept him back up the opposite side. The sensation of his soft, wet brush sliding through her vestibule drew a sudden, blooming heat to her cheeks.
Adrift in an ocean of uncontrolled pleasure and unavoidable dread, she surrendered to the abyss. Her mind and body fractured, ripped apart as though they were two distinct entities severed by the hand of death itself. She hung embroiled in a sublime paradox: on one hand, her thoughts were cast into hell, buffeted by a violent, implacable gale that smashed them against her deepest regrets and the tragic verses poets would one day sing of her fate. The looming terror of witnessing Paolo's demise, and being condemned to survive it, drove an unbearable anguish deep into her spirit. Overwhelmed by the crushing stakes of their endeavor, the whole of her soul sank into an insurmountable despair.
Simultaneously, her body ascended to the highest realms of heaven. A fierce fire of pleasure consumed her senses, and ecstatic pain liberated her muscles. As the intensity mounted to a fever pitch, tension seized her. From her toes to her hips, her muscles locked, fueling a delicious pain that traveled up her spine to her neck. Her head tilted back, she drew in and threw out her breath with raw, ecstatic vigor. The Empyrean itself seemed to harbor her, unleashing every trace of concupiscence the human mind instinctively conceals within its darkest depths.
As if driven by a fey spell, Francesca guided the soft pad of Paolo's tongue directly over her clitoris. He seized the opportunity, pressing a fervent kiss against her skin as his tongue gently raised her hood, which immediately elicited an electric burn that flashed through her skin. It was so violent, she felt as though lightning had just struck her core. Her spine arched backward, suspending her entire weight on only her shoulders and heels. Her feet flexed downward and her toes spread, every muscle straining to process the tidal wave of endorphins inundating her veins. A single tear escaped from each eye, rolling slowly down her cheeks: one born from the unbridled ecstasy of her flesh, and the other from the unquenchable agony of her reason.
A strepitous commotion severed her from her thoughts in a way that even her visceral emotions could not. In a flash, an irresistible force ripped Paolo away. Turning toward the disturbance, she saw a Rebis dragging him back, while another Rebis towered directly over her at the head of the stone slab. Looking up from her position, the stark perspective magnified the Rebis' frame, accentuating their dual anatomy: testicles hanging beneath a vulva. Their body was crowned with a beautiful yet ominous androgynous face, gazing down with eyes so cold and devoid of expression that they felt like a threat.
The sight stopped her heart; she could not reconcile the intense sensuality of that dual body with the terrifying weight of their supernatural strength and the sheer confusion of the moment. Her first thought was that the Rebis had read Paolo's eyes just as she had, the second that Paolo had orgasmed and was no longer permitted in the Red Room. Either way, this could be the end. The cold, penetrating eyes of the Rebis staring down at her made her fear they were about to tear her limbs apart, like a spurned lover methodically plucking the petals from a flower.
A cocktail of awe, fear, arousal, and dread coalesced into something entirely unprecedented: a crushing weight born of irrevocable decrees and irresistible desires. It transcended simple carnal urges; she was experiencing the very Mysterium Tremendum et Fascinans that countless volumes of The Lore and science so often described and yet could never truly capture. Every cell of her body stilled as she saw the Rebis' hands approaching. Closing her eyes, she took a shallow, rushed breath, trying to suppress her senses to escape a painful obliteration. She scrambled for the words to plead for Paolo's life. But as she opened her mouth to voice her plight, the Rebis' fingers made contact with her skin, stifling her muffled scream before it could leave her throat.
Instead of a violent pull or rough handling, the Rebis pinched both of her nipples, clamping one hand onto each breast. She froze. A sharp ringing filled her ears, drowning out the world as confusion clashed with raw fear and her heart hammered against her ribs. The pressure grew acute. Whatever was to come, she prayed it would strike swiftly; she wanted only for all this to end. The agonizing grip tightened further, leaving her stranded in the dark, uncertain whether to speak, to move, or if this silent agony was a punishment or a test.
Minutes passed; the pain accumulated even as the tips of her breasts began to grow numb. Finally, the burning ache reached a breaking point. A sharp cry of distress escaped her lips as her eyes opened, instantly meeting the unblinking, steady gaze of the Rebis. They had been watching her all along.
The Rebis released her nipples. Blood rushed back to the numbed flesh, inflicting a piercing pain like needles and stealing another strangled scream from her throat. The creature stepped to her side and effortlessly lifted her with precise and deliberate care. From this elevated perspective, she could see the rest of the Yellow Room, where all the beings stood in two distinct lines. At the head of the left column stood the creature carrying Paolo, who was now tightly hogtied, a rope around his neck cinched to his bound ankles. The Rebis carrying Francesca marched to the head of the right line.
Once in place, both columns marched toward the back of the chamber, closing in on the threshold behind which the Red Room awaited. Upon crossing it, Paolo was placed in the center of the floor, barely breathing as he fought the rope on his neck, facing a chair situated directly in front of the entrance. With meticulous care, the Rebis settled a shocked Francesca onto the seat like a crowned queen ascending her throne. The remaining Rebis stood along the perimeter, their silent faces turned inward to behold them. Overwhelmed, Francesca closed her eyes and drew another deep breath, trying to parse the staggering weight of what had just occurred.
III
A new burst of gasping and sputtering, expelling warm air over her toes stops her fall into her internal labyrinth of dread, guilt, and arousal. Paolo's agony demands she find a path out with frantic urgency. She must devise a plan to execute one last, desperate gambit. Her arousal is becoming harder to sustain, and it is difficult to imagine Paolo could be attuned to any erotic impulses; for all she knows, the whole operation is already over and their end imminent. Her heart floods with a sense of defeat and inadequacy. With a hole in her stomach she wishes she could go back in time and avoid this whole madness.
She draws in a deep breath and looks around the Red Room. It has an octagonal layout with the door behind her and the mirror she was staring at directly in front. The light is dim, but enough to notice the cinnabar tone of the granite giving the chamber its color. The Rebis stand stationed against the walls, staring at her, positioned almost equidistant from one another. The ceiling rises two or three stories above. Something random and seemingly out of place catches her eyes: on the floor, behind Paolo and in front of the mirror, there is an embossed image of the Square and Compasses, and over it, a rubber crop.
Her mind wanders back into the forest of her memories and feelings. A profound sense of loss invades her as she sees her whole enterprise crumble. She had climbed so high, she had been so close to claiming what was deemed the highest achievement of her guild, that letting it all go seems worse than death. But perhaps it is all an illusion exposing the banality of The Work and of her title. The initiation, the hermeneutic laws, the arcana, the correlations are all merely sophisms. Her eyes become glassy and a knot of excruciating anguish ties in her throat.
When you reach rock bottom, the only way is up or so goes the folksy saying. A sudden flash of insight hits her like lightning. Paolo's cruel tie is not an act of malice; it is a guide, a metaphor for her to decrypt. A hallmark of the Dark Arts is their obscure but precise and consistent symbology. A layman cannot pass a test he's not prepared for; and, thus, the whole endeavor has been her trial all along. Paolo is the test: her Materia Prima, the Lapis Imperfectus she must chisel into a block fit for the castle of The Work.
She jumps out of the chair, reaches for the crop, and rushes back to stand by Paolo's side. Raising the crop, she brings it down with force, delivering a sharp swat right in the middle of Paolo's exposed soles. He immediately arches so far backward that the rope between his ankles and neck loses its tension momentarily. A muffled scream escapes his throat; a choked gasp born from a desperate attempt to draw air through the excess saliva pooling in his mouth.
But his over-reaching arch can last only so long. His exhausted muscles eventually relax, as the legs and head drop heavily back to their position. The line binding them snaps violently, burying the hemp deeper into his throat and scraping his flesh. The impact causes him to emit a wet, gargling sound, blurring a clumsy attempt to scream in pain.
A blush fills Francesca's cheeks briefly, caused by her seeing Paolo in such a vulnerable circumstance, completely at her mercy, with no escape and perhaps even without hope. The erotic excitement makes her a bit embarrassed but, before he can recover from the first strike, Francesca delivers another one. Each hit leaves a thin, red welt across the skin where the crop lands. Paolo makes a desperate attempt to shape his cries into a plea for help, perhaps a 'please' or a 'stop'; but whatever it is he is trying to articulate, it does not matter.
Francesca knows she has to keep going regardless of his pain and her angst. The thought of Paolo's demise being delivered by her own hand devastates her, but aborting the enterprise would be a fatal mistake. Her only solace is that, if she's wrong and her torture ends him, his suffering would end faster. The thought of his dying without understanding what is happening, hating her forever and feeling betrayed makes her shed a tear. She had known that being the custodian of The Secrets came at a cost; she just never grasped how high they could get.
After roughly a dozen hits to Paolo's feet, Francesca walks back toward her chair, her gaze locking onto him. He meets her eyes now. Through his ragged, shallow breaths and the tears tracking through the sweat on his face, she can read him one more time. He is begging. His eyes are screaming with tears of pain but they are also reproaching her, vehemently demanding why? Why is she doing this to him? They are angry eyes, shouting to her that he deserves better.
There is no time for guilt, nor to remind him of her numerous warnings. Francesca's gambit hinges on a ghastly realization: sensuality and sex can enhance bonds, but they cannot instill, much less teach, connection. Yet, a jealously guarded secret conceals the far less obvious truth that torture is amongst the most absolute forms of intimacy.
When there is no confession to extract, no defined punishment to fulfill a sentence, and when the pain is delivered purely for its own sake, the victim has only one recourse: to try, with every fiber of their being, to forge a connection with their tormentor in the hope of eliciting a glimmer of empathy. To open themselves totally and offer everything they are.
The torturer, in turn, witnesses the tortured from angles no one else ever will, often not even the victims themselves. Forced intimacy, so goes the Order's euphemism, as described in some of the most guarded annals of The Craft. The logic is bleak, but it admits no argument.
Her arousal wanes as a result of the stream of concerns and her persistent attempts to understand the symbols around her; as it does, her anxiety intensifies. She doesn't know how the rules of the Red Room are enforced, but she avoids looking into the Rebis' eyes just in case. She focuses on Paolo instead, on his ties, his pain, his physical struggle, which makes her regress to the early days of her initiation.
She remembers an occasion when another apprentice had to bind and torture her. She relives the sensations and her state of mind during that punishment: the way pain elicited involuntary movements and the way the restraints precluded voluntary ones. It all made her dissociate her body from her spirit.
The inescapability of the binds, compounded by the inevitability of the pain, had given her no option but to embrace the agony and offer her full self to her tormentor. It surprised her, at the time, that she would develop feelings for the very woman who tortured her in that manner, eventually becoming her closest friend and lover. Oftentimes, during the nights of passion they shared, the memories of the torments inflicted on her were enough to elicit ecstasy and foster a much deeper connection with her. It isn't until this very moment that she realizes why. She has now come full circle.
Paolo's reactions and struggles against the ropes suggest he's traversing the same path she did back then. Francesca finds it titillating to realize she is the source of Paolo's feelings of inescapability, of the ineluctable pain which leads him to a deep soul-searching. Afraid of admitting it, she feels his squirms of pain, his bound flesh, and his expressions of suffering pull her arousal back to high levels. Her journey, she now realizes, has also led her to feel pleasure and pain more intensely.
"Alea iacta est," she whispers to herself, breathing deeply in an attempt to quell the knot of anguish tightening in her throat. Francesca steps back to Paolo's side, crop in hand. She raises it high, twisting her torso clockwise to maximize the impulse. A blow comes down with an even crueler force, striking with a loud, sharp crack. Paolo arches backward in a violent convulsion. His face flushes a dangerous crimson as the veins on his temples and neck bulge. A choked scream escapes him, cut brutally short by the lack of air in his starved lungs. This time, the crop leaves more than welted wedges on Paolo's soles. Thin lines split open, and liquid ruby pearls of blood emerge from his lacerated skin.
A second crack splits the air. A third, a fourth, a fifth in rapid succession. Francesca perceives his body contorting helplessly, but the blows fell so fast his movements couldn't keep pace. It becomes a continuous, agonizing struggle against the biting ropes cutting his flesh, keeping him in place and forcing him to receive the cruel torture. The image of the excruciating pain making the muscles of his calves, thighs, and buttocks tremble uncontrollably is imprinted in her mind in the same way a glowing-red rod brands bare skin.
Sweating from the exertion and dizzy from a mix of arousal and worry, Francesca delivers another half-dozen swats to his feet. Paolo twitches violently, causing the ropes to deepen and expand the abrasions on his skin. The rope forcing his head backward keeps a pool of saliva in his mouth, which is constantly sucked in by his desperate breathing, making his gasping sounds dominate the room.
Almost immediately after Paolo reaches the paroxysm of agony, his violent twitching subsides, even as the strength of her hits does not wane. His limbs grow heavy and still, like burning embers snuffed out by a splash of cold water. A hollow ache opening in Francesca's gut makes her stop in panic. She swallows hard and holds her breath as an even deeper sense of anguish invades her veins. A thin sheen of tears glazes over her eyes, although they stay trapped by a knot of dread and arousal. The color of her skin vanishes, and her lower lip begins to tremble. She can feel a freezing rush of blood spreading throughout her entire body as, step by step, she moves toward the chair to see his face.
With more calm and attention, Francesca perceived a subtle quivering on Paolo's calves and thighs. His muscles still show some tone even if not as marked as before. The constant sound of gasps and gargles can still be heard as her eyes scan his wrecked form. The ropes had left raw, angry abrasions across his skin, exposing live flesh all underneath it; worst of all around his neck. Strands of saliva came out from each side of his mouth, mixed with a copious rush of tears rolling down his cheeks. His heavy, downturned eyes, still a piercing dark brown amidst the bloodshot teary redness, squinted through the agony and were covered by tears like water overflowing a glass.
Francesca locks her gaze with his, noticing his eyes are no longer asking, no longer begging, but rather offering and confessing. He lays bare all his inner layers: everything he is feeling, everything he has felt, all his flaws and hopes. His eyes, like windows, display to her his fears, every moment of joy, his meeting her, memories that fill him with shame and pride, the feelings of defeat, fulfillment, and accomplishment. In his pupils, she can see how his barriers crumble like a sandcastle meeting a wave.
Eyes revealing a profound sense of sorrow; grief for not opening up to her sooner, for withholding his internal thoughts and feelings that would have allowed them to see each other fully, to connect through the mutual acceptance of who they truly are.
Eyes screaming the unbearable regret of having built these barriers out of fear of losing her, only to realize, with cruel irony, that he could never lose what he had never actually possessed since those very barriers had precluded him from ever truly connecting with her in the first place. Eyes expressing deep remorse for failing to realize their shortcomings, along with their strengths, were the raw material from which they both could have built bonds, trust, and meaning together.
Eyes disclosing the reason Paolo stopped convulsing and reacting to her blows was not an absence of physical pain, nor was it out of exhaustion; it was because the intense emotional pain of this realization is so acute that it vastly surpasses the one perceived by his senses. To his soul, the wounds are barely a nuisance.
But his eyes still show a glimmer of hope; hope of finding some final strength to fight the choke for another minute, another second; whatever it takes to offer his innermost self fully to her. He holds onto the belief that maybe, just maybe, she will accept part of it, carry it with her, and weave it into her own being until the end of time. And beneath it all lives a profound faith in the idea that, if she accepts it, both his life and his death will find their ultimate purpose.
A long, shaky breath escapes Francesca as her shoulders slump. Emptying her lungs all at once, she buries her face in her hands, letting go of the suffocating anguish and fear she's been carrying for so long. She scrambles to Paolo's side and drops to her knees. Hooking her left arm beneath his head, she cradles him softly, allowing him finally to take a whole, unimpeded breath. Shaking, she uses her other hand to frantically wipe away his tears and saliva.
A violent fit of coughing clears the fluid from his mouth. The gurgling subsides, replaced by vigorous gasps as his lungs starve for oxygen. Still cradling his head, she works to untie the knots tormenting him, starting at his neck and working her way down to his ankles, exposing his raw skin under the ties. Once he is loose, she rolls him onto his right side, keeping her left arm braced beneath his head to cushion it. They lie there together on their sides, his head nestled beneath hers, bound now only by a tight embrace.
The embrace slowly tempers the shaking of his limbs grounding his ragged breathing until it fractures into a deep, tearing sob. He buries his face in the curve of her neck, letting loose a heavy exhale that dissolves into a heavy cry. A sharp gasp follows, tearing away an even louder sob as his trembling arms lock around her. The weeping is so raw that Francesca can feel the catharsis vibrating through his skin, tearing away the chains that held his soul. He holds her with a fierce embrace stripped of everything but the absolute need to anchor himself to her, an attempt to turn a fleeting moment into an eternity.
Holding him close, Francesca rests her cheek against his head while her hand traces the slow curve of his back. Feeling his warmth, the reality of the moment crystallizes. She had watched him dangle between torment and release, clinging to life by a thin thread of hope. She had looked through the window of his eyes to witness his true essence, recognizing, finally, the shared emotions and desires that bind their fates together.
She lifts her head slightly to look down at him, tucked against her shoulder. A deep, fiercely protective tenderness floods her. Looking at him reveals the entire path of their journey: the spark of finding him, her hesitation, the agony of the trial, and the flash of insight that allowed her to chisel his spirit like a mason striking rough stone. She has carved him into her own design, her own creation. She has forged his new self so he might serve a grander purpose. He is, now, truly hers.
The Rebis begin encircling them, vocalizing a low-pitched whisper. The murmur is faint but steady and highly rhythmic, carrying the signature resonance that lent their voices their unnatural timbre. Whatever words they are attempting to form are lost forming, instead, an unintelligible hum.
Francesca presses her hips close to his, feeling the warm, metallic hardness of his chastity cage. She did not notice he still had it since the Yellow Room. Keeping her left arm looped beneath his lacerated neck, she brings her right hand down to unlock the device. As she removes it, she feels him swell against her. It is not quite erect, but it carries the distinct hallmarks of a desire waking from constraint and punishment, uncoiling in its newfound freedom.
The Rebis keep closing in and, as they do, their rhythmic voices become louder and clearer, their utterances are now understandable:
"Nec te caelestem,
neque terrenum,"
The unearthly chorus chant goes
"neque mortalem,
neque immortalem fecimus."
It continues, and then repeats.
Time allows his phallus to expand, tracing a natural arc until it finds its home between their lower abdomens. Sensing this shift, Francesca cups it gently, easing her hips back to guide his rising length without strain. She feels the smooth crown brush her skin as she coaxes it down and to the side, navigating the contour of her body. Reaching her labia, she presses inward, parting those delicate gates until he rests against the soft, moist threshold of her vestibule.
The steady increase in volume makes the voices loud and clear, yet unnatural and otherworldly just like the Rebis' nature.
"Nec te caelestem,
neque terrenum,
neque mortalem,
neque immortalem fecimus."
She begins a slow, tender, and rhythmic gliding motion, stroking his tip up and down her yielding flesh, deliberately widening her movements with each pass to near the crown of her clitoris. Beneath her palm, his increasing hardness bears witness to a desire matching her own mounting arousal. On the final upward stroke, she guides him right over her pearl; his tip nudges her hood aside to grant her a flash of direct contact, an electric jolt that steals a sharp moan from her lips. Bringing him down once more, she guides his length towards her entrance, sliding him deep inside her. Paolo's embrace locks tight, and his shaft buries itself completely within her warmth.
The Rebis inexorably advance; their voices steadily grow louder. Their vocalizations become less of a chorus and more like a chant of war:
"Nec te caelestem,
neque terrenum,
neque mortalem,
neque immortalem fecimus."
Francesca presses her forehead to his, their noses brushing, their lips a breath apart. She looks deep into his dark brown eyes; eyes that are now completely open, transparent, vulnerable, and silently asking why? But it is a different kind of why? born of genuine curiosity, gratitude, awe, and amazement. They are eyes wanting to know why, out of everyone on Earth, she chose him. With her mind burning with passion, meeting his gaze with her emerald-green eyes, she answers with the only true answer, the first secret: "Ours is the world's first love, and the last one too."
Just steps from them, the Rebis' voices are deafening; the entire building trembles under the implacable vibration of their throats.
"Nec te caelestem,
neque terrenum,
neque mortalem,
neque immortalem fecimus."
Francesca gives him a kiss, holding his gaze. She can feel his skin prickling exactly where her fingers track across him, like a brush applying a texture on a canvas. Their movements involuntarily synchronize: her hand sliding into his hair elicits his touch in hers; her leg sliding forward over him is mirrored by his leg moving between hers, like a choreography conducted by nature itself.
Francesca utters the final secret: "Igne natura renovatur integra."
Her voice drowns in the Rebis' swelling cry, like a grain of sand lost to a vast ocean. The Rebis are now so close they form a living, circular curtain around the lovers. Their chant roars louder, intensifying as they raise their arms in perfect choreography. The sheer volume and synchronicity of their vocal cords not only shake the building so violently that dust sifts from the joints of the heavy stone walls; it also rapidly increases the temperature of the air, turning the chamber as blistering and suffocating as the burning tombs on the sixth circle of Avernus.
"Nec te caelestem,
neque terrenum,
neque mortalem,
neque immortalem fecimus."
A blinding white flame erupts from the center of the circle, reaching all the way to the ceiling. The glare is so intense that the entire Red Room turns stark white. The Rebis become mere shadowy silhouettes surrounding a flare as blazing as the violent birth of a star, their thunderous intonation further intensifying to mirror the primordial explosion that conceived the cosmos.
"Nec te caelestem,
neque terrenum,
neque mortalem,
neque immortalem fecimus."
The incandescent flare eventually subsides, and with it, the titanic roar of the esoteric chant vanishes into a vacuum. The Rebis' arms fall to their sides as they drift backward toward the walls like receding shadows. As the living curtain parts, it reveals a heap of silver ash smoldering at the exact place where Francesca and Paolo have just lain.
The room plunges into an abyssal, eerie silence; not a breath, not even a heartbeat can be heard. This stillness, as unnatural as the voices of the Rebis, imbues the space with a sepulchral ambience so absolute that the cataclysmic, world-shaking events preceding it feel entirely impossible, as if it belonged to another reality altogether.
After many long minutes, the uncanny stillness breaks. The core of the ash trembles, and a singular body begins to emerge. As it rises, the ash diminishes, seamlessly absorbed and integrated into the fabric of the new being.
When the figure finally stands fully upright, the silver heap has vanished. All that remains is a tall, naked body radiating a raw, renewed youth and vigor. Its eyes open. The right eye, framed by gilded skin and feminine features, reveals an emerald-green iris; the left, a deep brown, is surrounded by masculine lines and bronzed tones. Both hands rise from its flanks, crossing to touch opposite cheeks. As fingertips meet their own flesh, the expression in their gaze immediately transmutes into a peaceful sense of intense awe and bliss. They realize what they are touching; they confirm what they have become: a Rebis.
