Remorseful wives are a feature in this category, this story looks at a different type of response. It also reuses some elements of my 'Suburban Wives' story, partly because readers seemed to like it and it fitted with the subsequent plot.
Hope you enjoy.

Mason and Alison had been married for 16 years; despite the stresses of modern day life and the pressures of raising a family they were happy. The were some areas of conflict including Alison's frustration over their limited budget and Mason's careful approach to managing it. He tried to explain things would get better once their two children were older. Chris was 14 and Mike 12, both parents were proud of the young men they were rapidly becoming, but that growth strained their finances. That in turn limited their holidays, experiences, treats and ability to do things.
At 35 Alison was an attractive woman recovering her figure easily after both pregnancies. She had been a late developer and struggled to find friendships and her own confidence when younger. She worked as a press officer in Local Government and was both competent and well respected.
Mason thought she was very pretty when they married but now she was definitely in the 'hot mom' category. It still made him smile thinking that she had chosen a life with him. She had an easy elegance despite being frantically busy, multi-tasking to balance work with looking after her family. Despite the time pressures she took care with her looks and always dressed professionally in fitted skirts and jackets. There was always a chance of needing to do some front of camera promos or videos at work.
Mason worked as an engineer; he was quietly popular within a close group of long-standing friends. He did his best to support his wife and family, balancing work with home life effectively and taking a real interest in his children. As they grew older the boys were drawn more to Mason and the things they had in common, mainly sports, the outdoors and music. Alison found some time to relax and decided to start back at the gym. She never enjoyed it, but liked the results, toning up the slight jiggle that had begun on her lower stomach and bum. Mason thought the results were outstanding and encouraged Alison to show off some of her hard work and enjoy feeling fit. Despite limited funds he encouraged her to spend money on herself and buy some new outfits. Most of the time Alison was more likely to return with clothes for the boys. Care of her children was the area where Alison truly excelled, she was a natural at it and made it seem so effortless.
Alison didn't attract too many admirers when younger. Now she got a lot of second looks from other men when they were out. And for the first time she seemed to enjoy it. Mason noticed, admitting to being slightly jealous at times.
Their sex life had slowed down some, Mason lamented the arrival of children impacting that area of their lives, not that he would swop them for the world. When the children were younger, both he and Alison were often exhausted. Now they were older Alison was horrified at the prospect of them hearing their parents being intimate.

They arrived at Paloma's, an Italian restaurant booked out for the 'leaving do' of Alison's colleague Rachel. It was a nice place with plenty of space, there looked to be around 60 guests and a good atmosphere.
Mason got the drinks as Alison caught up with a younger group of her colleagues. He joined her and handed over her requested choice of wine. Trying his best to join in was thwarted, as most of the conversation related to their work and he could barely hear anything over the loud music. Mason couldn't help notice the young man who was in close conversation with his wife at the far side of the group.
Alison had to admit she was enjoying the company of Stephen the young man in question, some of his flirty comments were becoming more suggestive.
"What do you think they are saying about us?" Stephen asked cheekily.
"Probably that I'm far too old for you and that you should be very careful as my husband is here."
Stephen smiled easily, "Oh I don't think I have too much to worry about there, and I really like more mature ladies, especially a one as hot as you!"
"Don't you mean a very much married older woman? And I wouldn't underestimate Mason if I were you!"
"Of course, that's even hotter; maybe we should get a drink alone some time?"
Alison laughed, "All right cowboy, just hold your horses that isn't happening!"
"You know I think you'd really enjoy it, you deserve some fun and I'd get to be with my dream woman."
"Oh is that right, it's such a shame I have principles!"
"Oh I have principles all right, like living life to full, taking risks and not settling. You know they say you're as young as the man you feel and you could feel me anytime you liked."
"That's probably true as I feel my husband over there we are exactly the same age."
Alison decided to stop the conversation going any further even though it was giving her a buzz of excitement. She was about to return to Mason, only for Mason to barge into Stephen spilling his drink."
A startled Stephen reacted, "Hey man, watch what you are doing!"
"I could say the same to you, if you've got a problem we can sort it outside!"
Stephen blanched, Alison was mortified, her colleagues were all looking, "Mason I have this under control!"
"Really it doesn't look like it, but suit yourself I am leaving!"
With that Mason walked out.
Stephen recovered looking at a startled Alison, "It looks like our luck just changed."
That broke Alison's stupor, "Shut up Stephen, it's never happening!"
Alison was furious; some innocent flirting was made to look like she was acting inappropriately in front of her colleagues. So annoyed by Mason's actions, she thought about staying but that would probably make things worse. So she collected her bag and went to catch up to her husband.
Once outside she was struggling to make up ground in her heels, "Mason, Mason for fuck's sake slow down!"
He finally turned expecting an apology but that didn't happen.
"What the fuck was that all about, acting like a bloody Neanderthal. You just made a total embarrassment of yourself and me in front of all of my colleagues!"
"I don't think so Alison, you and that little prick managed to do that all by yourselves!"
"Don't be an idiot, I had it all under control, he's like an excitable puppy."
"So he wasn't coming onto you?"
"It was just a flirty conversation that I was about to shut down, until you barged in making a scene."
"Oh that eventually occurred to you did it? After leaving me hanging around like a 'spare prick at a wedding' for ages!"
"You're a big boy, you can handle social situations easily enough and you should have trusted me."
"I gave you plenty of time; but you were liking the attention too much to stop."
"Good grief, just grow up Mason; you are completely over reacting!"
There was little of meaning said after that, they got home and went to bed in silence. Alison had to admit she had enjoyed Stephen's attentions; maybe it was because her life had become a bit bogged down in the monotony of work, mortgages and paying their way. In some ways she also enjoyed her husband's jealous protection. Still the whole thing was embarrassing and could have been avoided if Mason had just trusted her.
They caught up at breakfast, Alison broke the stony silence, "I am sorry about last night, but it was just a flirty conversation, there is nothing going on."
Mason didn't looked convinced, "It seems you might like something to be going on though."
"It's not that, I suppose the attention is new and a few things have been bothering me for a while."
That was news to Mason; he'd thought everything was fine, "Oh like what?"
"I feel as though my life has become a bit well... dull. I miss trying things and having new experiences."
"You mean a new experience like that kid?"
"God no, that's not what I mean at all! I had all of these dreams and ambitions when I was younger and never succeeded in them. Now the kids are growing and don't really need me, I'm not sure of my purpose anymore. Compared to you, I'm a mess."
"You're my mess and I love everything about you."
Alison's smile beamed, "You see, you say the most enchanting things without thinking about it, even when you're angry! You're content with your life, where as I watch TV and pine over the things we can't do. My life feels like a trudge, a monotony of work and bills, there has to be more to life!"
"The money position will get better soon then we can do more with our lives. Look why don't we do the Egypt trip we've been planning for years?"
"Can we afford it?"
"I think so; I can juggle some things around, maybe a short loan. It will be tight but we could just about manage it."
Alison was delighted; she recognised the need to get their relationship back on track and appreciated Mason's efforts to do so. It was in school time which made it cheaper; the boys weren't interested 'in old stuff' and were happy to spend the time with Alison's mum and dad instead.
***
Three months later, they'd dressed up for the hotel party on the first night of their vacation. Alison felt Mason's eyes on her, she checked herself in the mirror, "What is it?"
Mason stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, "Nothing other than I was thinking you look absolutely stunning. The dress really suits you and accentuates your figure."
She smiled in return, "Thank you, I feel a bit self-conscious with so much skin on show, but you've just made me feel good about it. That's a gift you have; making the people around you feel good."
They went happily hand in hand to the function room. It was quite a busy affair; most of the guests looked very affluent. They enjoyed a couple of glasses of champagne; Mason was already trying to establish if he might get a decent pint of beer from anywhere.
The noise in the room tailed off, everyone was looking toward the bar where a new entrant was holding everyone's attention. Mason looked at Alison in ignorance of the newcomer.
"Oh my God it's Cole Blackstock, he's been voted one of the top ten eligible bachelors in the world. You must have heard of him?"
Mason had of course but denied it, "Nope, got no clue."
"You must have heard the story; a self-made millionaire, a couple of years ago he was widowed at only 27 years old. He is having to bring his twin sons up on his own. They were only three when his wife died, it was all so tragic."
"He doesn't seem to be with them now and he looks like he can afford a nanny or three!"
"That's a horrible thing to say, don't be so mean Mason!"
Mason nodded, his comment had been churlish, he was usually better than that! Maybe he was in a poor mood or was it Alison's gushing reaction to Cole Blackstock that made him that way.
A little while later he was still wondering why he'd made the comment. Looking over to Cole, Mason felt as though the man was everything he wasn't. He carried a presence and confidence to the point of arrogance. The man expected to be the centre of attention and was comfortable there. Mason admitted he was good looking, the absolute epitome of tall dark and handsome and was clearly very rich. Mason suspected that what Cole was standing up in equated close to his annual salary, the Rolex alone would be close. He consoled himself that they were horrible gaudy fashion accessories that said a lot about the wearer, not much of it good.
What was worse was that Cole was clearly likeable, he had an easy presence and those in his vicinity were laughing and smiling constantly. People seemed to gravitate to him, and in amongst all of those people right at the centre was Alison.
It had begun after Cole had approached them and asked Mason if he could dance with Alison. The look on his wife's face made him agree all be it reluctantly. At the end of the dance he and Alison had been drawn into the group surrounding Cole.
For the last 45 minutes Cole had monopolised her attention. The only thing which held Mason back was the memory of the works event where his response had caused so many problems. Then things took a turn for the worse when Cole offered Alison his hand again and led her to the dance floor.
Mason was trying to count to ten watching his wife dance in his arms; he couldn't seem to manage past 5 before swearing under his breath. They were holding each other closely and moved sensuously to the music. Of course Cole could dance, he was probably a fucking world champion! Cole was talking to Alison while the thumb of is right hand caressed the skin of her bare lower back. The look of adoration his wife was giving Cole was disturbing. Other people were looking on at the happy couple, that pissed Mason off even more, if that were possible.
Finally he concluded he wasn't going to get past 5 and thought 'enough of this shit', standing to approach the seemingly besotted pair.
He stayed calm this time before tapping Cole firming on the shoulder, "Sorry but I'd like to dance with my wife now."
There was a look of irritation before Cole stepped back and covered it, "Of course, I can't blame you for that, Alison the pleasure was all mine."
Mason took Alison into his arms noticing her own look of disappointment as a swarm of beauties vied for Cole's attention.
"Don't tell me your jealous again Mason!"
"No more pissed off, I didn't expect my wife to spend the night with another man."
Alison re-evaluated in her mind and tried to see it from Mason's viewpoint, that didn't feel good. "I didn't realise it had been so long, thanks for staying calm this time."
"Who says I am calm? Look I get it, he's rich, successful, good looking, can walk on water and do no wrong, but that doesn't mean he gets to have you!"
"Of course not, he is a nice guy and was telling me about his wife. He has a sadness to him under the flash exterior. And he was asking me about our boys, honestly you'll like him, I can introduce you properly."
"No thanks, my stomach has taken as much as it can."
Alison kept her distance from Cole after that, dancing often with Mason. Mason tried his best to enjoy it, but noticed her looking around the room, no doubt for Cole. He wanted to go; actually he wanted to be on another planet if at all possible.
***
Alison wanted to make love that night but Mason couldn't get into it, "I'm sorry my mind is a mess, I can't do this, it doesn't feel right."
"Why of earth not? You've never rejected me before!"
"Yeah well you've never been so obviously entranced by another man before!"
"That was nothing, I was just meeting a new person and being friendly. Yes I liked the attention but I wouldn't take it any further and you can reap all of the benefits."
"But would you be thinking of him? Are you hoping he calls, invites you for dinner, somewhere expensive maybe?"
The fire lit in her eyes, "Just what are you accusing me of exactly?"
"You tell me!"
"I am not even justifying that with a response. What an awful allegation, it's clear just how little you think of me. Maybe you could learn some manners and class from someone like Cole!"
With that, Alison rolled to the other side of the bed, wrapping herself in the quilt.
***
Over the next few days it was if they couldn't avoid Cole Blackstock. He was often in the hotel bar and restaurant. He chatted amiably to both Alison and Mason as if they were old friends. When they mentioned a trip to the 'Valley of the Kings', Cole offered for them to join his own private tour with special site access and no need for tickets or queues. Alison agreed for them both and Cole went to make the arrangements.
Mason turned to her, "I don't want to go with him!"
"Don't be silly, how could we ever afford such a wonderful trip on our own. Anyway I have accepted now and he's putting himself out to include us."
There was no faulting the quality of the trip. Having Cole around was less appealing, at least to Mason. Actually at times he felt like the third wheel, as Cole stole the attention with limitless grand gestures and amusing conversation. It was if he took up all of the oxygen and energy in the room.
***
Cole appeared over breakfast the following day and offered for Mason and Alison to spend the rest of their holiday on his private boat rather than the planned river cruise ship. Alison was delighted; Mason politely refused his offer before she had the chance to say anything, adding that they had to get ready for that day's tour party.
When she caught him up in their room Alison was furious and they argued about it, she couldn't understand why Mason would reject the offer.
"It's supposed to be our holiday not his!"
"But his boat is to die for; we could avoid all the crowds and get out of tourist class."
"That's another thing; he's turned our dream trip into something that you now think is beneath you."
"Nothing is beneath me; it's just an opportunity to do something so much more special and exclusive together."
"Would we be together, or would it be mostly you and Cole."
"Oh my God you're going to allow some petty jealousy to stop us having the trip of our lives. I can't believe you!"
She stomped out of the room, slamming the door in anger.
Mason waited at the pick-up point for the trip but there was no sign of her. He decided to go; it would be the only chance before they moved locations. He was in a place he longed to reach for so many years, Karnak Temple... and he hardly noticed it as he drifted around. His mind was on his marriage and where Alison might be.
Mason has started to think of Cole as a rival for his wife's affections. He was honest enough to know that Cole would come out top in just about every comparison against him. His hope was the love and history they shared, and if she didn't see that, well then they were finished anyway.
Alison was in the room when he returned at tea time. She looked very anxious, neither of them seemed to know what to say, eventually Alison managed to ask how the trip had been.
"Yeah fine I guess, I wasn't paying that much attention. What about your day?"
"I spend the day in the spa. I'm sorry I should've come with you; I know how much that trip meant to you, but I was too upset."
Mason looked her in the eye, "You know this is over if we can't trust each other!"
That works both ways Mason, "I know you're desperate to ask if I saw Cole today."
"Well did you?"
"I bumped into him and told him about us arguing. We talked, he apologised for anything he did that caused you a problem."
"You're sharing our intimate issues with another man Alison."
"He was supportive Mason and listened. I actually think he is quite lonely, he is wary about hangers on and people looking for angles to get his money."
"And you don't think he wants more from you?"
Her anger flared immediately, "I give up, it's you who is failing on the trust issue not me!"
The rest of the trip continued without incident or much enjoyment if they were both honest about it, both were troubled. Mason had his suspicions but he couldn't prove anything one way or another.

Once home things remained frosty over the next few weeks. Alison was falling over herself to be nice but even simple conversations were strained as they tip-toed around each other. Mason was trying his best to put things behind him and move forward but he felt stuck. Their saving grace were the boys asking about the trip and catching up with their time at home.
Alison was acutely aware that the small touches and kisses, comments and flirting were now absent. They were such a part of their relationship she hardly noticed them, until they weren't there any more; the withdrawal left her feeling sad.
She thought Mason needed time, whereas Mason thought he needed certainty. He couldn't help mentioning issues of trust and honesty in the few meaningful conversations they struggled to have.
Their intimacy ground to a halt, doubts festered in Mason's mind and he couldn't shake them. They slipped back into their usual routines and focused on the kids. Conversations were polite, Mason didn't know what else to say and Alison appeared to be in the same position. Ultimately they became something resembling roommates and shared guardians of their children; neither knew what to do about it. Other elements of their lives including work became a slog without the joy of home life to keep them on track.
***
When Alison mentioned a charity gala that her friend Jane was arranging, Mason almost leapt at it. Any excuse to reconnect would do them the world of good.
On the night of the party, they got ready and took a taxi to the gala. It was a fancy affair, the great and the good of their admittedly small part of the world dressed up and made sure they were seen donating to the local children's hospital.
Yet again Mason thought Alison looked stunning in her elegant evening dress, this time though he struggled to provide the compliments. Alison was a little disappointed but told Mason she loved it when he got dressed up and looked all handsome.
The event was going well, Alison was helping Jane to keep things organised and on track. Until... until Mason couldn't believe his eyes!!!
Cole Blackstock walked into the event. Alison shrieked with excitement and found Jane to rush over to greet him. The venue was abuzz, everyone knew him of course, or more accurately knew of him through the media.
The fact he immediately had announced a sizeable donation to the charity and encouraged others to follow suit affirmed his hero status in the room. Alison and Jane were ecstatic; in the 30 minutes since he arrived they'd trebled the previous year's funding total.
Mason felt like he had a 'stick' in the middle of a gun fight! He smiled at the appropriate places and quietly retreated to the bar and didn't leave it. He was certain Alison wouldn't miss him, so he was surprised when she was suddenly standing at his side, she wasn't alone.
He turned to face them, she was clearly nervous, "Mason, you know Cole; he came to help the charity."
"Oh I think everyone knows Cole, some better than others!"
"It's so good to meet you again Mason, you must be so proud of Alison."
"Yeah I have always been proud of her."
"No doubt, she is such a special lady."
Embarrassed Alison tried to change the topic, "Have you heard how much we have raised for the kids, it's totally amazing!"
"Well done, turns out you just needed the right man for the job!"
Mason turned to Cole looking him directly in the eye, "Listen I don't want to talk to you Cole and I don't appreciate your interest in my wife, so if you know what's good for you, you'll piss off before I lose my temper!"
Cole overcame his initial shock recovering his easy smile, "There is no need for that Mason, I am just trying to help out here, children's charities mean a lot to me. However I will accede to your request!"
With that Cole moved away abruptly, Alison was horrified, "Oh my God Mason that was so rude, he has just donated a fortune!"
"No, what is rude is you introducing someone who is clearly interested in you to your husband."
"Don't be ridiculous Mason, this is a great night for Jane and the charity. I can't believe you would try and spoil it for us."
"And how did he happen to arrive here, don't insult me by suggesting it was coincidence."
"Well no, I did message Cole and ask if he could help the charity, but I never expected him to actually turn up in person. All of the sponsors are fighting to be associated with him."
"And you did that despite the fact he ruined our holiday and we have never been the same since! So why do you think he came all this way, to our little back water instead of another night in Monte Carlo or wherever the fuck he normally hangs out?"
"He came because he is a good guy and wanted to help. Don't try to make it into something else."
"Just go and circulate Alison, I'm sure you want to."
"Fine have it your way!"
Alison knew she was on shaky ground; Mason had a right to be upset. She was certain Cole was there because of her, but she really hadn't expected it. She tried to keep her distance from Cole and fulfil her organiser role. During those duties she had lost sight of Mason, maybe he left in another huff. The night continued with both Jane and Alison doing the hosting for the evening, they didn't get a break until later when they went into the gardens to catch some fresh air.
***
As Mason approached, he heard Jane clear her throat trying to voice a warning, "Alison... Alison, it's Mason!"
Mason couldn't believe it; Alison was kissing Cole! She pulled away from the kiss and looked at Jane who was nodding toward Mason with raised eyebrows and in some alarm.
Alison jumped, "Oh Mason, ermmm... sorry it was just a little kiss, maybe we had too much to drink."
Mason moved toward Cole, but Alison stepped between them quickly, panicking at the sight of Mason's anger. They all hesitated, if Alison hadn't stepped in, he would have swung for Cole.
"I'm sorry Mason, it was nothing really. I guess we need to talk."
"No, no we don't!"
It was so surreal; he couldn't comprehend fully what was happening. Mason had to get out before he lost it completely and stormed away with Alison shouting after him.
Alison was distraught, that was not how the evening was supposed to go. She kicked herself for the kiss with Cole, she hadn't meant to do that, but the horrible truth was, it wasn't their first kiss!
She slipped away from the event and used their phone tracker, finally finding Mason hidden in the back of a local dive bar.
"I'm tired of arguing Mason!"
"Yeah me too and tired of your lies, any chance you could try the truth, I know it's a stretch for you!"
Alison was sick of the way Mason kept lecturing her about truth and honesty and the offhand sarcasm he used to put her down. Going on and on, without actually moving on himself. He was the one who was always jealous, made snide remarks, losing his temper or running off as he had again tonight.
Finally she cracked, "I doubt you can handle the truth Mason!"
Mason's eyes shot up but he said nothing.
"OK if you think you can handle it... the truth is I spent that afternoon with Cole on holiday... but we never had sex!"
Did he hear that right, the sudden jump to denying they had sex sounded odd and felt strange, "There is something else you're not saying."
"Cole made it clear he wanted me, and we, well we kissed!"
The silence stretched on, Mason waiting for a continuation of her confession that wasn't forthcoming, "So was it just kissing?"
"We made out and touched but I stopped it going any further."
"So what was tonight about?"
"That was nothing, just a sign of affection for helping us."
"How romantic, I don't know if you lying to me or yourself? You don't even have the decency to apologise."
"It was just a kiss and I chose you, even though he promised me a better life and all the riches in the world. Just look at him and what he has to offer but I turned that down because I love you!"
"You're saying that like you've done me a favour! Are you sure you turned him down, he doesn't seem to think that is the case. How do I know it hasn't all gone further?"
Alison had rejected Cole's proposals but it had been a close run thing. Everything he described sounded so appealing and they got on fantastically well. It was in complete contrast to how she and Mason had been getting on lately. But she felt like she'd done the right thing, not that Mason appreciated it.
"You will just have to trust me Mason; I think I have earned that over our years together. If you can't handle that, then maybe we should seriously think about having some time apart."
Her suggestion didn't get the response Alison expected, "Yeah maybe we should, because I certainly don't trust you and we both know you want new experiences and the money to do them!"
Alison was stunned; it was the last thing she expected Mason to say. She was certain he'd fight for them to stay together. He should have been relieved that she chose him over everything Cole had to offer.
The idea of separation shocked Alison, Mason loved her and would always be there to support her... wouldn't he? He was supposed to be horrified by the idea of them splitting. She definitely loved him and cared for him as she always had. Yes she'd been completely bemused and overwhelmed by Cole's interest in her and made some poor decisions. On one level it wasn't complex, looks, money, and charisma, most women wouldn't have shut the door on the way out. But she and Mason had history and she really did love him and their boys.
On the positive side she could use a separation to demonstrate to Mason everything he would be missing. And if that meant getting to know Cole a bit more, then that wasn't exactly a hardship. Cole had been so supportive and had proven to be a great friend even after accepting her rejection.
***
They told the children about the separation together, glossing over the reasons. Mason moved out to a friend's house accepting it would be less disruptive for the boys?
Alison was pleased that Mason wanted to know how she was doing and what she was up to. She had to admit liking the idea of him pining for her and seeing what he had lost. She mentioned that Cole was still involved in the charity knowing it would get back to Mason and make him jealous.
Several weeks into the separation, Mason was shocked to see Alison and Cole sitting together in a restaurant. He looked at his rival once again, he couldn't compete with tailored suits, good looks and the sickly slick confidence women seemed to adore. He was uber-rich not just wealthy and by all accounts a business genius.
Alison's eyes widened when she saw Mason. She stood and walked over to him, "Don't panic Mason, this is just a dinner between friends."
"Come off it Alison, I may be naïve but even I have my limits, you're out with your boyfriend even though we're still married!"
"You insisted on this separation, it's reasonable that it includes seeing other people!"
"You know our separation was supposed to give us time and space to sort our lives out. It wasn't about you auditioning another man!"
"It's just a date! You left me remember, there were no rules!"
"So you've used the separation to give another man a test run. Why am I even surprised, you seem quite proud of yourself."
"So what if I did, we're separated and you weren't there for me!"
"You really are a self-centred manipulative bitch! You had best get back to your date then!"
Damn it thought Alison, there is a difference between making Mason jealous and rubbing it in his face, she couldn't seem to get anything right these days. She would talk to him again tomorrow, hopefully he would have calmed down by then.
***
"I am sorry you found out about me and Cole like that, but the reality is we are separated and I don't think what I've done is wrong!"
"You're sorry I found out but not sorry you've done it! I shouldn't be surprised; it's what you wanted all along!"
Alison had to make Mason realise what he was going to lose, "No it wasn't, I didn't plan anything like that. But he is offering me a whole new lifestyle, I'm willing to sacrifice that and come back to you!"
"So it would be a sacrifice to come back to me? What's the matter wasn't he any good?"
"Oh don't kid yourself Mason he was perfect in every way."
Shit, she realised that she'd confessed her adultery! Still she wasn't going to play the chastised wife to his moral superiority, as a result she attacked, "You have no idea, honestly he is an amazing lover and rocked my world."
They looked at each other, it was hard to decide who was more shocked. Alison watched his anguish, realising she'd gone too far in her anger and frustration. She'd managed to undermine Mason in the worst possible way. The truth was Mason had always been a wonderful lover.
"I, I didn't mean it like that!"
"You meant every word; it's the first time I've believed you for weeks."
"It's the honesty you wanted; if you don't like the answers, don't ask the questions! I was trying to protect you from all of this, but I am pleased its out in the open and I don't have to lie anymore."
"At least one of us is happy, I don't think you're going to make it as a marriage counsellor though! Are you done hurting me or is there more?"
That comment was a gut blow to Alison but she had to see this through, "You have a choice, divorce me or we put this all behind us and move on together!"
Mason felt like a complete failure, the idea of his wife moving onto someone who was better in every way was utterly shattering, "That isn't much of a choice Alison, it's either 'get shit on' or 'get shit on from a great height!"
"Don't be so melodramatic we have a good life and I will put in everything possible into resolving our problems. We have the kids and a million other good reasons to stay together. Nothing changed between us, don't let your pride get in the way, it was just sex and I've stopped things."
"Stopped them or just delayed them while playing us off against each other? Your reasons to stay together don't sound very appealing Alison?"
"Like I say you have the option of walking away, but you should know I will go to Cole, he has made it clear he wants me. He has money and resources, I would be moving onto a better life, there is an attraction there and maybe more. I don't think a divorce would go as well for you! The worst thing is the kids; I don't want you to end up being a part time parent, you and they deserve better!"
Despite outside appearances Alison felt terrible, she had been selfish and stupid, but felt she needed to be brutal to have a chance of saving her marriage. She was certain a pity party for the wronged husband was only going to end in divorce. Having Cole as an alternative emboldened her. He was desperate to whisk her away and introduce her to his twin boys, saying they would make a perfect family. And he would provide a life style she could only dream of! Maybe it was that option which led to her over confidence when dealing with Mason.
Mason looked at her, "Christ you're utterly shameless! I would hate to be the one holding you back Alison and I'm clearly failing to make you happy, it will be better for everyone if we go for a divorce."
Alison couldn't believe his reply, this wasn't supposed to happen! She had always been the one in control, Mason just needed a way to get over the 'time out' in their marriage.

Alison did try but it always felt like a wasted effort. As a result she moved on quickly, the reality was she had a very attractive alternative. For some reason Cole was waiting eagerly in the wings and she wasn't going to miss that opportunity.
"Mason, you have made it clear you won't get over things and I have feelings for Cole, he can offer me and the kids a better life!"
"Jesus Alison say what it was, you cheated, not me! Not that you have ever apologised for that, you just added up the pro's and con's and moved on!"
Alison hated the idea that she could've been so cold and calculating but couldn't deny Mason's accusation. She blamed the circumstances and promised herself to be better in the future.
"Cole has asked me to be with him, if you remain determined to end our old life then you leave me no choice!"
Mason stared at her; at least she had the decency to look uncomfortable. He wasn't sure If Alison was leaving him due to a lack of love or just making a pragmatic choice in light of events. If she'd put any real effort in, there may have been a remote chance of them staying together, especially once the boys were factored in?"
"Don't push the blame on me, this was all you own doing. Tell me, is it just the money that attracts you to Cole?"
"The life style is attractive, being able to do what you want when you want and the excitement is intoxicating. He is good to me as well, but I don't love him like I do you!"
"You keep repeating that you love me, but you need excitement. How much effort did you put into providing that excitement in our relationship?"
"We didn't have many opportunities or money to do things."
"This isn't about money; if you truly loved me, I would be enough for you! Like you were enough for me. It should be a two way street, but you want me or Cole to provide everything for you on a plate. You are an attractive woman but you're not God's gift and you're taking no accountability for your own happiness!"
Alison was staggered, Mason had never expressed any dissatisfaction before, the idea that she had those failings left her feeling decidedly uncomfortable.
Mason didn't let up, "It's too late for us but before you get settled in your new life think about this: Cole chased a married woman and he doesn't see cheating as a problem. He travels everywhere but rarely sees his own children. You might want to reassess just how good of a catch you think he is. Oh you will have plenty of new shiny things, whether you have any firm foundations is another matter entirely."
Alison felt like she had been dismissed. His parting comments left her with a range of uncomfortable question about both her own contribution to their marriage and Cole's reliability.

Cole asked to talk privately to Mason after he dropped the children off, "You should forget about Alison, she is with me now!"
"That's fine, you're welcome to her!"
"I doubt that, I know you still want her, but you can't match what I can offer. I also know you cast doubts over my character and reliability; she has been asking me all sorts of awkward questions."
"Like I say, she is all yours, our interactions relate to the kids. I may not be quite so noble if what you do impacts them!"
Cole smirked, "Alison is such a sensual woman and so responsive, especially when I'm buried up to the hilt inside her. I love it when she orgasm's all over my cock."
Mason was going to swing for him until he realised that was probably what Cole wanted. An arrest would see him out of the way, "Fuck off you creep, I don't know any real man who would talk about a woman he supposedly cares for in that way, it's disgusting! But I shouldn't expect anything better from you. You might have money but you have no class."
With that Mason strode away feeling satisfied to have not taken the bait. Cole was left feeling like a fool, he couldn't recall the last time he's been so casually ignored. He had to admit a begrudging respect for Mason. It might be better if he didn't try to antagonise him again; there was a second where it looked like Mason was going to attack him. Sure he would have ended up in prison, but he had a suspicion that Mason would have caused a lot of damage before the police got there.

Their divorce progressed, all be it slowly at least it felt that way to Mason. Alison was already seeing Cole and he wanted to get through the proceedings as quickly as possible. Having a first row seat to his wife's burgeoning relationship was soul destroying. For her part, Alison was determined to make a success of her new life, that would justify all her actions in the long run.
Mason braced himself for the worst, he expected Alison to move away with Cole and take the kids. He had virtually no chance of gaining custody and dropped the idea on the advice of his lawyer.
He could only pray her earlier threats about being a part time dad didn't become reality. He'd heard all the horror stories, gradually losing touch, desperately trying to find things to entertain his 'weekend' kids. And her new man had enough money to both bury him legally and to impress the boys.
No doubt their joint friends would flock to Alison, especially now she had money and social status behind her. He envisaged moving into a shitty flat or even back with his parents. Surviving on 'pot noodles' and seeing his children once a fortnight or not at all if Alison took them away. Once Cole's lawyers were done with him, there would be precious little remaining.
Whatever happened he wasn't going to roll over and die! He'd been alone before and could survive. Anyway 'pot noodles' weren't too bad, they had supplied the sustenance to get him through college after all.

Alison's simplistic assessment of the two men in her life was not quite so straight forward as it first seemed; life had a habit of getting in the way. The boys were digging their heels in about not moving or changing schools. Options around private and boarding schools were rejected out of hand by both Chris and Mike. They suggested if Alison wanted to move away with Cole then they'd happily move in with Mason!
They did move into a new bigger house provided by Cole but stayed local. Alison explained she didn't want to affect their schooling with a move. She couldn't argue with Mason moving back into their old home. The boys often called in to see him on the way back from school and stayed for tea. Their time together was far from awkward; despite starting the tricky teenage years they always seemed delighted to see him and had lots of things to talk about.
They were growing rapidly and excelling in sports especially football. With no home life to rush back for and time on his hands Mason volunteered to help coach their junior football teams, so he saw them on practice and match days. The boys' club were delighted that a former academy player wanted to be involved. Actually they were delighted when anyone volunteered. The kids on the team were great, some of the demanding, bias and slightly unhinged parents were another matter entirely!
The divorce proceeded on a simple even split of assets. Mason was able to take out a mortgage covering Alison's share of the value. House prices were booming and he'd have the option to sell later on if needed.
Alison spent a lot of time with Cole, often travelling to exciting foreign locations. He wasn't keen to take the boys and they'd made their feelings about him clear, as a result Alison asked Mason to take them for extra days. He could live with all of her exciting new posts on social media as long as he had the boys. The posts of Alison with Cole's younger sons were far less palatable; it felt as though she was abandoning her own family in favour of Cole's.
When Alison had the boys, Mason rekindled his hobbies. He went on long hikes and rides in the mountains, testing routes he could repeat with the boys. He enjoyed it and began feeling fitter and energised. After contacting some old friends they re-joined the groups they were part of and slipped straight back into friendships with like-minded people.
Both his and Alison's parents rallied around, Alison's kept apologising for their daughter's behaviour and went as far as inviting Mason around when they were looking after the boys. Announcing to Alison that they, "Would be supporting Mason and their grandchildren through the break-up."
Alison changed her tune completely; she wanted Mason involved in their lives and talked about co-parenting. In the end they agreed to have the kids half a week each, Mason got them Wednesday night through to Friday and kept them if it was his weekend. They were in regular contact and managed those interactions well. Mason thought her dad might have something to do with the change of heart. He wasn't sure what was going on with Alison, she certainly seemed more subdued and amenable.
Many of their joint friends followed her parents' lead. Mason asked Jane why she was being so nice to him; after all she was Alison's friend more than his.
She laughed kindly, "The great thing about you Mason is you have no idea how much people like you. Then there are the boys, we all want is best for them and a big part of that is you! Alison is more than aware of that as well!"
Mason really was touched blushing like an embarrassed teenager, "Thanks Jane after these last few months and the comparisons to Cole you have no idea how good it is to hear that. In some ways I can't blame her, he has the looks, money and confidence. No wonder her head was turned, I couldn't compete with all of that.
Jane touched his forearm, "She's wrong you know, you're a far better man than Cole. He has a lot of window dressing but lacks substance, his conduct towards Alison shows that lack of character, while you held true to your principles."
Mason looked back at her with some surprise as she continued, "I think she knows that as well... deep down. You do know she still loves you don't you?"
"I doubt she ever loved me the way I did her."
"Well I'm certain she realising exactly what she's lost or more accurately threw away."

After the initial whirlwind, things calmed in Alison's new life. Cole travelled a lot for his businesses, but she was constrained due to her family and work commitments. He wanted her to give up work but she felt it was too early. She couldn't risk losing the boys, they were already angry with her about the break-up. There was another complication, Cole's twins were now 6 years old and it was clear he hoped Alison would be the mother they'd lost. To be honest their behaviour was poor, not helped by being passed around different carers and nannies.
Their sex life quickly became more routine and lacked the connection she'd had with Mason. She found herself thinking about Mason more and more while she was with Cole. Mason had coped with everything, if anything he dealt with all of it a little too well, he should have felt her absence more. The divorce had strengthened his bond with the boys; it was something Cole didn't have with his own children. She had to admit Mason was a far better parent than Cole.
On paper Cole was better in every way, in reality it didn't feel like that. Mason was solid and dependable but not in a dull way, he always used to make her laugh. And he quietly made people feel better about themselves, she really missed that. He didn't have Cole's money but if anything his life seemed fuller and to her dismay he was thriving without her.
Alison gradually became aware that Mason stopped paying any interest in her life. It was a complete turnaround, now it was her who wanted to know how Mason was doing. Judging from what the boys, her parents and even friends said his life had changed significantly. Alison missed him far more than she expected and was surprised that he recovered from his anger and resentment so quickly. She deserved and expected more rants and accusations. Then it dawned on her what might account for it: could he be moving on already? The feelings of jealousy surprised her. She decided to invite Mason to stay for dinner as he was dropping the kids off.
"Where's Cole?"
"He's out of town."
"And he's OK with me staying over for dinner?"
"Of course, you're always going to be part of my life through the children. And I want us to remain friends Mason, that would be better for all of us."
Mason was confused, was the 'friends' thing genuine, if anything she seemed a bit lonely. He was tempted, if only to keep Alison onside about the kids but decided better of it, "I think not Alison, if will only confuse the boys just as they've accepted we've split up."
That seemed to surprise her, "Oh right, well fine if that's the reason; unless you have some hot date waiting for you?"
Mason tried hiding his smile, Jesus she couldn't be jealous could she? You couldn't make this shit up!
He shrugged his shoulders as he left saying, "Here's hoping, bye Alison."
Alison really missed the small touches and comments the most, how he quietly checked in with her and looked after her without making a big fuss of it. Cole was more for grand gestures and expensive presents. She really should be over Mason by now and enjoying a new life. So why didn't it feel better? She felt off balance in her new situation like something wasn't right. Her dawning conclusion was that Mason was a better life partner. She had to admit jumping the gun too early in both her tryst with Cole and the subsequent relationship.

Their divorce was about to be finalised. Mason was aware of Alison hanging around and talking more every time they were handing over the kids.
Then after they ran inside after the latest drop off, Alison blurted out, "Maybe we shouldn't do this Mason!"
Mason was perplexed, "You are the one who cheated and rushed into another relationship and now you aren't sure? Are you crazy, you got everything you wanted!"
"I don't have you; we split because I thought you would never forgive my actions. I made a mistake and just kept digging a bigger hole."
"Well you did it with a millionaire on your arm. What's the matter, haven't you found the excitement in your life that you were seeking? Aren't things a bed of roses with the new man?"
She ignored the questions, "I miss you Mason more than I thought possible. He's not you; I miss us and our life together. You know I never meant to hurt you and I promise I could make it all up to you."
The idea of a happy life with Alison flashed before Mason's eyes, the boys would be thrilled, "You might not have meant to but you did it anyway; and you did it so easily, like I didn't matter at all!"
Alison continued, "I took you for granted, you met 99% of my needs and I went looking for the other 1% and ended up with nothing."
"Come off it Alison, I couldn't compete with him, I could see that in your eyes. You didn't wait long, you moved straight onto husband 2.0 full steam ahead. Now you want to hedge your bets and keep me dangling on a line."
"It was all pretty surface dressing and not much substance beneath that. You're the better man and you're definitely the better man for me. I know I posted all that idyllic life stuff but it's just not true. Oh there was plenty of money but I've been lonely, Cole travelled constantly. He talked about our boys a lot, I think he wanted me to be a mother to his sons more than anything. "
"You just said wanted, like it's something in the past."
"Cole and I aren't together any more Mason!"
Mason looked at his wife, she seemed like a different person, small and scared, "I'll be decent about things Alison but there is no going back, you aren't the person I thought you were and I deserve better."
Alison began crying, properly sobbing not the usual crocodile tears, "I got what I wanted but lost what I needed, you! I want my marriage back, that chase for excitement was immature and nothing compared to what we had."
"You know I always thought our marriage was exciting! I didn't know anyone who got on as well we did and I desired you utterly, the kids just added to it all. But you checked out of our marriage as soon as he appeared and continued those choices every time since. Just accept things Alison, then we can all move on with our lives!"
She wouldn't let it go, "I will if you can look me in the eye and say you don't love me."
Mason's head rose slowly catching her wide tear filled eyes, she still looked beautiful to him, "I don't love you any more Alison!"
He was lying of course, but it was easier to say otherwise, there was no way he could forget what she had done, "Do you know you still haven't apologised Alison. Oh I am sure you think you got your sums wrong, and made some bad decisions no doubt, but you don't really think you're to blame! But you are, you failed me and I can never trust you again. Just accept you didn't love me enough and let it go."
There was no stopping her tears now.
Yeah he loved her still, but that was fading, he was confident about moving on and enjoying his life. He still had a lot to offer and was excited about what lay ahead. He was determined to grasp that himself, he didn't need anyone else to achieve it. He might not have Cole's money but he was comfortable with any comparisons now, morally he was head and shoulders above the man.
End.
