Who Knew? (Gabby's Story) Ch. 05

I don't usually preface my stories with notes like this; but in the middle of this chapter, Vivian is going to do a dance for some kids at a party. The song is "Houdini" by Dua Lipa and you can find the Official Music Video on YouTube. Do yourself a favor and go watch it... you'll need to do that as a frame of reference. Vivian's dance skills are special!

That night she was getting ready for bed and Alex called. "Hi Gabby! Say, before our fun this morning, you were going to tell me something, and then decided to tell me later. It's later now, wanna tell me?"

"Oh my God, that's right. Let's see... I almost want to tell you face-to-face because then I can see your reaction."

"I can give a decent reaction over the phone, ya' know; I can be VERY dramatic!"

Gabby giggled, "I'm sure you can; uh... okay... let's see. I have a very erotic proposal for you."

"I'm all ears!"

"Alright, what if you select a guy friend of yours and I select a girl friend of mine, and the four of us get together?"

The silence on Alex's end of the phone was deafening! "Uhhh... What's that again?"

"I said we each bring a friend and share."

"Oh my God, Gabby... I..."

She waited and he didn't finish his sentence, so she added, "I think it would be lots of fun!"

"Ya know what?" Alex finally replied, "Let me think about this for a while, okay?"

"Sure, there's no rush."

"It's such a surprise, I'm not even sure what guy I could ask."

Gabby giggled, "I can guarantee I have a friend that would love to do it!"

She slept in on Friday and it wasn't until 11:00am that Gabby checked her phone for messages. One of them was from Jenna and she called her. "Morning Gabs!"

"Hi Jenna, I just got up... what are you up to?"

"Oh, it's just that Carrie and I have been busy putting together a last minute New Year's Eve party on Saturday night at her house. It's last minute because we expected to be in a playoff game and now we're not. Wanna help us?"

"Sure, what do you want me to do?"

"How 'bout you be in charge of ordering pizzas?"

"I can do that, how many kids are coming?"

Jenna said, "Well, that's just it, we're gonna make an announcement on Facebook and also send it out on the school athletic app... we'll just have to see. Maybe charge everyone $5.00 or something."

"What time will it start?"

"7:30, we should be able to have a head count by 8:30."

After telling her mother about the party, she was willing to extend Gabby's curfew to 1:00am with the caveat, "Not one second longer!" Gabby agreed but not without rolling her eyes.

Because of the last second nature of this get-together, it was a crap-shoot as to who might come. Vivian and Darrell said they'd be there, but Alex said his family had plans in place and he'd be out of town. She asked Viv if she thought Charlie Green might attend, but Viv was pretty sure that Charlie had family plans also.

Dressing for this event was problematic. Temperatures outside were hovering around 10 degrees; Gabby would have liked to wear something sexier than jeans and a blouse, but that required planning. She got there at 7:00 and all the senior cheerleaders were there except Holly Simon. Carrie's basement rec-room was still decorated Christmas which wasn't bad; it still had that festive look.

Lena was asking, "So did anyone get some feedback, like who's gonna show up?" Between the four of them, five people said they'd attend. Gabby giggled when Jenna asked if Charlie was coming, and noted the look on their faces when Carrie confirmed that he wasn't.

And yet when 7:30 rolled around, people began trickling in. Gabby knew most of them but there were a few strange faces that she had no clue about. For example Robby Claiborne, a defensive back on the football team, came in with a girlfriend named Aliyah, who she found out was a senior at Southeastern. It went like that for a while; but Lo and and Behold, a little after 8:00... who should walk in but Johnny Simmons and one of his basketball teammates Carson Ford.

"Oh my God," Gabby thought to herself. For about two minutes she went through a kind of tug-of-war. The old Gabby would have shied away from the situation, but the new Gabby had a different approach. What sealed it for her was when Vivian tapped her on the shoulder, "Hey look, Gabs; Johnny Simmons is here!"

"Yes, I see that."

Viv could sense her hesitation, "Know what, Gabs? You were bold with Alex, and how's that working out?" Gabby looked at Viv and she added, "Don't live life taking two steps forward and one step back."

By this time the music was cranking up and it was getting pretty loud in there. Gabby set her face and walked over to where Johnny was talking with two other male friends. "Hey Guys!" she gave them a welcoming smile.

Carson spoke first, "Hi Gabby, we were hoping someone would do something local tonight, then your invite popped up."

"We're glad you came. Hello Johnny, I was at your last game, too bad that last shot didn't go in!"

"Yeah, but we play them again next month."

"Please, do me a favor?"

"What's that?"

"Kick their fucking ass!"

Gabby expected to see the look on their faces when she said that, and she wasn't disappointed. All three mouths dropped open as if on cue; then Johnny replied with a grin, "Yes Ma'am, will do!"

She turned and walked away, smiling to herself. "This evening is off to a great start!" she thought.

At 8:15 there were about thirty people there, so she ordered the food, and just for good measure three more pizzas in case stragglers showed up. Gabby did notice that a few members of the basketball cheerleader squad were there, and the basketball players kinda gravitated toward them. At any rate, the kids were starting to get into it just after 9:00. At that time a third of them were dancing, and no surprise at all... two of them were Vivian and Darrell.

Gabby stood there for a while, but when someone started the song "Good Luck Babe!" by Chappell Roan, she went up to Lena, "Maybe you and I should dance, we need to get things..." She didn't finish, there was another tap on her shoulder, and shock?... it was Johnny!

"Gabby, wanna dance?"

"Sure!"

Viv saw them come over and start dancing and she caught Gabby's eye to give her a knowing look! Johnny was a pretty good dancer (at least as good as her,) and halfway through the song, he got a little closer and said, "You really surprised us, Gabby!"

"I did? How so?"

Johnny laughed, "I've heard girls cuss before, but not in a context like that!"

Gabby spun around while giggling, "Yeah? Well, to kick the other team's ass, you need some 'resolve.' I was trying to give you some!"

He grinned, "You succeeded!" They refocused on the dance and near the end when Chappell was singing, "You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling," Johnny said, "No offense, but it was especially effective coming out of the mouth of a... what are you? Five feet tall?"

Gabby laughed, "I'll have you know I'm ALMOST 5'1"

"I stand corrected!" and they both laughed. The song changed to "APT" by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars; Johnny asked, "One more?"

When Gabby answered, "How 'bout TWO more?" Johnny grinned hugely! This song was one of Gabby's favorites. She tried to shift into ROSÉ's demeanor in the official video, and really let it loose. Glancing over at Viv she saw her friend was flying high as well. Johnny and Darrell were doing a good job keeping up, but when ROSÉ sang, "!'m tryna kiss your lips for real, uh-huh, uh-huh!" Gabby's hands flowed down her body over her breasts, then back up again. She almost laughed when she saw how wide Johnny's eyes got!

When the lyrics said, "Don't you want me like I want you, Baby?" Johnny came in closer, so close they almost touched. Because he was a head taller she had to look up. "Someone said you and Alex Mantilla are a thing; are you?"

The chorus was going to kick in again when she replied, "Not true, Alex is a good friend." Johnny face looked like "Oh, Okay" and Gabby took the plunge and added (rather seductively,) "Do YOU need another friend, Johnny?"

"Always room for another friend."

"Good, let's be friends; we should hang out sometime."

Johnny was grinning as the song was winding down and the next song began. It was "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter. This time he took Gabby's hands and they moved through the song together. When the lyrics said, "Switch it up like Nintendo!" Gabby did two spins and landed against his chest. "I'd like that; let's!" he said.

"Set up your phone, I'll give you my number." He did then handed it to her and Gabby tapped it in. "Here ya go, don't wait too long!"

Johnny laughed, "I won't!" and he was gone.

Viv came over. "Wow, I saw that! Talk about 'fate' huh?"

Gabby smiled, "Maybe, we'll see. But hey, have you been giving Darrell lessons? He was right there with you tonight."

"A little bit, he's a quick study. I was watching YOU too, you never told me that you were a good dancer!"

"I'm a cheerleader, we're like sports super-heroes!"

As the laughs subsided, all of a sudden Gabby had a flash of an idea. "Hey Viv! What if YOU do a dance for all of us like you did at that other Christmas Party a few weeks ago?"

Viv squinched up a grin, "You mean topless?"

"No you silly... just a dance routine, these kids will love it!"

"I don't know, Gabs, I..."

The little superhero put a hand on her arm and interrupted, "Oh C'mon, Viv; what did you just say to me? Look around where you are! We're both breaking new ground in our own way! YOU can do this!"

"Okay," Vivian took a deep breath, "Let's pick a song."

After a quick debate, Viv suggested "Houdini" by Dua Lipa. "Oh my God, girl!" Gabby exclaimed, "That's perfect, and really sexy too!' She leaned in and said in Viv's ear, "Topless? OH MY GOD!" They both cracked up!

The song that was playing right then was winding down as Gabby made her way over to the computer that was their D. J. for the night. She hit the pause button, and the room went abruptly quiet. "Hey Kids!" She just about shouted, "A good friend of ours agreed to do an impromptu dance performance for us. Clear some space in the middle, would you? There was a buzz that waved around the room but everyone did as she asked, and a minute later, the teens had formed a fifteen foot wide circle; Vivian stepped to the edge of it.

"Everyone ready?" Carrie was standing ten feet to her left, and Gabby caught her eye. The cheerleader captain grinned and shrugged at her and made a motion with her hand as if to say, "Go ahead!" So Gabby yelled, "Give it up for my good friend, Vivian Morales!" And she hit the "play" button.

As the drums opening the song echoed through the room, Vivian moved to center using the steps from the official music video. Gabby knew them well, she had probably watched it fifty times or more. And from the way the kids reacted watching Viv begin... they had seen the video as well. The organ music kicked in; Viv's hands and feet responded. She began a slide stride around the circle's perimeter, her hands moving seductively and her strutting in perfect time. Dua Lipa was singing. "I come and I go, tell me all the ways you need me, I'm not here for long, catch me or I go, Houdini!" After she completed one rotation around the circle, Dua was singing, "Time is passing like a solar eclipse, see you watching and you blow me a kiss," Vivian completely shocked the room. In perfect sync with the line, "It's your moment Baby, don't let it slip," Viv whipped off her top and spun. She was wearing a sports bra, so it was no big deal... but the move was searingly HOT! And to make it even sexier, her nipples were brutally hard and clearly visible to everyone in the room!

Gabby was watching, but with each passing bar in the song, she would glance at the faces around the room. To say they were mesmerized was an exponential understatement! Gabby would strut, slide, twist and glide, and everything she did screamed, "I bet you'd love to fuck me!" (Or at least that's how Gabby saw it, and she was very sure that's how most everyone else saw it too!) When Dua Lipa was winding the song down with the words, "If you're good enough, you'll find the way; maybe you could cause a girl to change her ways! Do you think about it night and day?" Viv began twirling like an ice skater might in a final spin. Her hands were held aloft, and in the final line of the song, they slid down her body, over her boobs, around her ass, and straight out to the crowd beckoning them with her fingers. "Catch me or I go, Houdini!"

The entire room of thirty something kids absolutely exploded with excitement! The shouts and cheers were deafening in that small space. Viv's face was down when she finished, but in the middle of the noise, her head lifted and her face was streaked with tears. The circle collapsed and there was a huge commotion! Viv was somewhere in the middle but Gabby just stood there grinning. She was SO proud and happy for her friend; it was SPECTACULAR!

It took at least five minutes for that commotion to die down, but when it finally did, Gabby made her way over to where Viv was standing (with her shirt in her hand,) and gave her the biggest hug ever! "Completely and UTTERLY fantastic, Viv!"

"Thanks Gabby... I love you!"

"I love you too!"

Carrie, Jenna, and Lena came up behind her, Carrie said, "Viv, I would say 'You Rock!' but you're way above that! We want to make you an honorary member of our cheerleading squad!" Everyone laughed and Vivian put her shirt back on.

"Thank you, girls; Gabby talked me into doing that."

"We're so glad she did," Jenna added, "I'm gonna remember THAT for the rest of my life!"

Gabby noticed Darrell standing six feet away and she slid over next to him. "What do you think, Darrell?"

"I'm blown away," he said, "I saw the Christmas party dance. That one was awesome too, but you know what?"

"What?"

"This one was better; do you know why I'm saying that?"

"I think I can guess; was it because being naked from the waist up kinda distracted from the performance?"

"Exactly," he said, "And trust me, I'm not against naked by any means!" They both got a good laugh out of him saying that.

The party returned to food, music, and dancing and the clock moved on to midnight and the start of a new year. The excitement in the room grew (for a different reason.) Gabby had never been to a New Year's party with her high school friends before, and she made a mental note to thank God for the changes in her life that happened when she turned eighteen. She had to admit that her parents had definitely loosened their grip a great deal.

With two minutes to go she turned around and Johnny Simmons was right in front of her. "Oh Wow, Hi again," she said, "Do you need another dance?"

"Nah," he grinned, "These things wear me out more than a basketball practice."

"I know the feeling, cheer practices are tough, but I bet dancers are in better shape than us."

He looked around the room, and someone had set the computer to a verbal countdown until the new year. A video was playing, "Thirty, Twenty-nine, Twenty-eight..." Johnny said, "You have a prediction of how everyone will react when it hits zero?"

Gabby said, "I imagine there will be a lot of cheering, hugging, and maybe kissing?"

"Yeah," he replied, "I don't have a girlfriend, so maybe we can help each other out; what'dya think?"

The whole room was going "ten, nine, eight..." and Gabby quickly said, "I'm up for ALL of it!"

"Three, two, one..." A huge cheer went up which lasted well over thirty seconds! There were indeed a lot of high fives, hugs, whoops, hollers... and yes... several couples in the room were kissing. Gabby gave each person near her a warm hug, but she saved her warmest one for Johnny.

When the hug broke, she said to him, "Happy New Year, my newest friend!"

"Happy New Year, Gabby... wanna start it off with a kiss?"

She wrapped her arms around his waist, "Sure!"

He laid it on her, and it was pretty great! To his credit, Johnny didn't do anything stupid like shove his tongue down her throat, but it was as sensuous a kiss as a kiss could be when the tongue is not involved.

It lasted at least ten seconds and when it broke, Gabby looked at him, "Wow, that was really nice; thank you... my New Year is off to a good start!"

"I agree," he smiled, "You football cheerleaders throw the best parties!"

The Williams family went to grandma's house New Year's Day; family times like these were building memories. Her grandma and grandpa were getting kinda rickety with age, and it was special to be with them as much as they could. On Monday, Gabby's parents were not working so she and her mother went out to shop for some clothes and other items she needed for her last semester. They did lunch together and it went pretty great. There was a lot of time spent talking about Gabby's plans for next year, and she had to admit to her mom that the only reason she could see for going to college would be on a cheerleading scholarship of some sort. The biggest thing they decided together was that Gabby should start researching for a plan of what she might do if she DIDN'T go to college.

They got home around 4:30 and her mom started prepping for dinner. Gabby hadn't even touched her phone all day and in her room she finally opened up her texts. "Oh Wow!" she said out loud. She had at least twenty texts raving about Vivian's performance from the night before. It took twenty minutes to respond to those!

Then there was a text from Alex which was time-stamped at noon, "Hi Gabs, school starting, are you free one night this week?"

"Hi, sorry, I was out with my mom. Maybe Friday?"

Twenty seconds later he replied, "Cool, I'm thinking the movies?"

"Sounds like fun!"

After dinner she was a bit surprised by a text that came in from Rob McIntosh. "Hi Gabby, could I call you?"

"Yes"

Less than a minute later he called, "Hello Rob, how was your vacation?"

"Hi Gabby, it was pretty good actually, I got a lot of gift cards for Christmas. What did you get?"

"I got my very first credit card; I feel like an adult now!"

Rob chuckled, "Yep, there are a few things that'll make you grow up fast like that!"

"You know it! So Rob, what are you thinking tonight?"

"Ah, well... first, I wanna tell you I'm sorry I missed the party on New Year's Eve at Carrie's house; I heard it was amazing!"

"Oh my God, was it ever!" Gabby exclaimed, "One of the best!"

"I had three people tell me that; you're the fourth! Anyway, like we were talking about a while back, would you like to hang out one of these days? School's getting started again, but maybe we can find some time?"

"I would like that; do you have something in mind?"

"Uh-uh, like I said, I got some gift cards; maybe grab some food and get better acquainted? Do you like Italian?"

Gabby giggled, "Is there a person who doesn't?"

"Good point! How about Saturday night?"

"Um, I'm not positive I can make on Saturday, Rob; but, I'll know for sure Thursday night. Can I let you know then?

"Oh sure, no problem... I'll keep it on my calendar until then."

"Thanks, I do hope it can work out. But Rob, do you remember the point that I made to you when we spoke at Meijer's?"

"Yes, I remember, you said you and Alex weren't exclusive; I'm assuming you don't need me making any assumptions either?"

"Right, we just enjoy some time together."

"That's cool, text me your address and if it works out, I'll pick you up at 6:00 on Saturday, okay?"

As soon as she hung up, she gave him her address. If this worked out, it would be the first time she had a date besides dating Alex. For the next ten minutes, there was a back-and-forth going on in her head; "Should I tell Alex... or not?" In the end, she decided to play it by ear. Maybe on her date with him Friday night the subject might come up.

School started the next day and Gabby was pleased to see that her four classes were stacked back-to-back with the last one right after lunch. This meant she'd be finished by 1:10 and could get all her homework done by the time school was over. But... the highlight of the day was that at least ten people came up to her talking about Vivian's dance. Most of them weren't there and they were clamoring about if anyone had taken a video of it so they could see. She found out that Bennett Orsino did have the second half of the dance on his phone; a few others had even less. Gabby giggled to herself knowing that there were no full videos because no one anticipated it being any good. She mentally kicked herself because she didn't record it either!

After school she went to the library to meet Viv. She was standing by the desk and didn't see Gabby coming, but when she looked up, the now famous dancer broke out in the biggest grin Gabby had ever seen on her! "So Viv, how does it feel to be celebrity of the month at Springfield High?"

Vivian laughed, "It's been quite a day, news travels fast, I guess."

"Yeah it does, like light-speed!" Viv gave her a hug. "So now what, are you gonna have time to tutor me?"

"Oh of course! This is all gonna die down soon, and I don't want to give up my compensation either!"

Gabby giggled, "Even celebrity dancers get horny, huh?"

Viv leaned toward her ear, "Fuck yes they do; a lot!"

"Just like cheerleaders, right?" They both cracked up. "Hey guess what, Viv? Keep this secret for me okay, but Rob McIntosh called me last night. He asked if I would go out with him."

Viv's eyebrows went up, "Oh Wow... and so it begins, right?"

"Yeah, I have to find Lena next and fill her in."

"Are you gonna tell this to Alex?"

"Well, I'm going out with him on Friday night. Maybe I'll tell him."

"I have to get back to work," Viv said, "but I'm assuming we'll meet on Thursday and get the tutoring started again."

"I'll figure on that," Gabby replied, "3:30?"

"Yes, my house."

For the next two days Gabrielle's classes focused on introductory stuff. There were a couple reading assignments in English and Civics, but that was it. When she got to Vivian's house on Thursday, Gabby had pretty much decided that if there was going to be any tutoring, it ought to be in Algebra and Civics. Once again Viv had already taken those courses, and yes, in her desk drawer she had folders on both of them. They spent about twenty minutes discussing how to prepare for those two classes.

Viv pushed away from her desk and faced her. "So Gabs, ready to compensate me?"

Gabby giggled, "Sure, did you prepare some questions?"

"Uh, I did prepare something, yeah."

"What was that?"

"Darrell and I had a long discussion on Sunday. Wanna hear the highlights?"

"Is this kinda like MY compensation?" They both laughed.

"No, I'll get to that. I told Darrell I was bi-sexual." Gabby's mouth dropped open so far that it made Viv burst out laughing.

Gabby pulled it together, "You did huh; what was his reaction?"

"I wouldn't say that he was surprised, but his exact words were 'No kidding? Wow!' He WAS smiling though. I asked him if this was a deal-breaker for him, and he said it was not."

"I like that reaction," Gabby replied.

"Me too; then I asked him the BIG question!"

"Oh?"

"Yeah, I kinda said it joking; I said 'Darrell, what kind of a man are you'?" Gabby laughed and Viv continued, "He said, 'What kind of a man am I... Uh, the male kind?' I said, 'Do you think you're man enough to handle two women at the same time?' Gabs, you should have seen the look on his face when I said THAT!"

"Wow, I can only imagine!" said the petite cheerleader with a grin. "Did you tell him that I would be the other girl?"

"No, but I will. So the question is... when and where... Are you free on Saturday morning?"

Gabby stared at her, "Oh my God!"

"What? Too soon?"

She giggled and said, "No, but if we did get together on Saturday morning, it's conceivable that I could go out with Alex Friday night, play with you and Darrell on Saturday morning, then go out with Rob on Saturday night!"

Vivian stared back, her eyes were way WAY more than amused, "Why you little slut! What IS this you're turning into?"

Gabby giggled some more, "How in hell do I know; YOU'RE the tutor!"

As she headed out the door to go home, Viv said, "I'll talk to Darrell and text you; the 'where' might be a problem."

"Oh, and Viv? Please have Darrell bring condoms, okay?"

That night over the dinner table, Gabby and her parents talked for a good while. Her dad started it off by asking, "How's the first week of school going?"

"Okay, it was a little hard getting back into it after the two weeks off; but did I tell you my schedule is very light this semester?"

"Yes, you mentioned that."

Her mom asked, "You said you met with your tutor yesterday, I was wondering if you were going to continue with that, are you?"

"Yes, Vivian and I have become friends and she's gonna help me a little, especially with Civics."

"You know, Gabby, we only met her that one time; you should ask her to join us for dinner some night."

"I just might do that!"

Her father said, "So what are your plans this weekend?"

"We think we might go to the movies tomorrow night; I think Alex will pick me up."

"Now there's another thing," said her mom, "You're seeing a lot of Alex, we don't even know him."

"She's eighteen years old, Dear;" said her father, "I'm glad that she's getting out there more."

"It seems so sudden," her mother said wryly. "She wasn't dating at all and now she's a busy little dating bee!"

Gabrielle wanted so badly to say, "If I wasn't dating, who's fault is that?" but she smiled and bit her tongue, "Well now that I AM eighteen," and she looked at her dad, "You of all people should know," and she sang the line "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!" Her mom and dad cracked up.

Her dad said, "Wow, I think Cyndi Lauper's legacy is safe!"

She rolled her eyes and laughed, "Ohhh Dad!"

At school the next day, Rob McIntosh came up to her after second period. "Hey Gabby!"

"Oh, Hi Rob... I was going to look for you at lunch."

"Cool, got some good news for me?"

"I do, I'm looking forward to some good Italian food tomorrow night!"

Rob grinned, "Awesome, I'll pick you up at 6:00!"

She didn't see Alex all day, but as soon as school was over, she went straight home to get ready for her date. Just before he was due to arrive she had a thought, "Umm... if I'm going to insist on NOT being exclusive, I should pay my way some of the time." Her "stash of cash" only had about $200 in it; but just as she opened the dresser drawer, the doorbell rang. She quickly pulled out $30 and went to answer it.

"Hi Alex!"

"Hi Gabby, Hey dress warmer, I think the temp dropped ten more degrees in the last twenty minutes."

He was right, it was bitterly cold; (even too cold for tobogganing!) As they got in the car, she took his hand and put the $30 in it. "Here Alex, use this for tonight also."

"Gabby, you don't have to do that, I..."

She interrupted him, "I WANT to do it! You've been really great these last weeks and I want to show my appreciation!"

He gave her a look that was easy to read; the look said, "Holy Shit, girl; you gave me your body! THAT was thanks enough!" But he just said, "Thanks, much appreciated!" He put the money in his pocket and stepped on the gas pedal.

At the corner he turned right and said, "Oh Gabs, I meant to tell you, we're meeting Larry and Heidi at Wendy's, I hope you don't mind."

"Alex, I'm easy," and she sang the line from the song again, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!"

He chuckled, "That's cute!"

"It's true though. We had fun together at Boondocks; I like Larry and Heidi."

"Yeah, I get along with them really great!"

Gabby reached over and put her hand on his thigh, "Alex?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you think Larry is fucking Heidi?"

"Ha! I just love the direction your mind runs, Gabs! And yeah, I know for a fact they're having sex. Larry told me."

"Did you tell him WE were having sex too?"

Alex pulled into the Wendy's parking lot. When he found a spot, he said to her. "This is funny, Larry asked me if we were and I said, 'I have no comment.' and he said, 'Oh, Okay, I hear ya'!"

Gabrielle burst out laughing, "Larry is no dummy!"
