The Fifth Road Win

They won by four, on a goal-line stand with nineteen seconds left, in front of seventy-one thousand people who had spent three hours telling Carol Simmons what she was.

She had heard all of it. Widow. Cheerleader. Show us your tits, Coach. She called the blitz on fourth down with a sign in the corner of her eye that had her face on it and a word under it. Marcus Dade came off the edge untouched, and their quarterback was still flat on his back at the two-yard line when the clock ran out.

Then the defense picked her up off the turf and threw her. Three times, high, coat and heels and all, and caught her every time.

Their fifth straight win on the road.

---

The coaches' room in the visitors' locker room was cinderblock painted the home team's colors. A steel desk, a whiteboard with her fourth-down call still on it, a padded training table, a row of lockers, a door that locked. Through the wall she could hear the team in the showers, music thudding off the tile. Coach Reyes was at the podium upstairs. The buses left in fifty minutes.Coach Carol: The Sensation фото

She had told the three of them on Thursday, in the film room, with the lights down. Five on the road. Don't knock.

They didn't.

The door banged open and shut, the lock turned, and the room filled up with them, straight off the field: pads and jerseys gone, nothing on them but game pants filthy at the knees, tape, and eye black run down their cheeks with sweat. The smell came in with them. Turf rubber, wet tape, hot skin, the heavy musk of young men who had been hitting people for three hours. She was sitting on the edge of the desk with her coat off and her ankles crossed, and her cunt clenched at the smell before she had seen their faces.

Marcus Dade, twenty-three, her captain, back for his fifth year because she'd asked him to. Tyler Brandt, twenty-two, the quarterback, a senior now and twice as cocky for it. And Otis Brenner, twenty-three, back for a fifth year because Marcus was, the biggest man on the roster, who ducked coming through the door and was already, she could see from across the room, hard down the leg of his game pants.

"Coach," said Otis, miserably. "I can't help it."

"I know, sweetheart."

They all knew she only had to say stop. She never had.

Tyler reached her first. He didn't say a word. He took the front of her blouse in both fists, ivory silk with a row of tiny pearl buttons she'd had sewn on in Newport Beach, and tore it open.

Buttons hit the floor and rolled. The silk split down to her waist and hung off her shoulders in two pieces, and the three of them stopped and looked at what was underneath.

She had bought it for this. Oxblood silk, the color of old wine, with black French lace laid over the cups in a pattern of tiny vines. A balconette cut for her double D cups, straight across, so the tops of her tanned breasts swelled plump over the edge of it, pushed together by the wire into a deep, soft cleft that rose with every breath, a scatter of freckles at the top of it where three pairs of eyes went in and stayed. The lace was sheer. Through it the dark circles of her nipples showed, already drawn up hard and pushing at the vines. Below, a narrow garter belt in the same silk, low on her hips, with four black straps running down to the tops of seamed stockings. The skirt still covered the rest. She watched them try to see through it. Tyler's eyes had gone into her cleavage and stayed, and she could read the whole play on his face: his cock shoved down that soft cleft, her tits squeezed tight around it, the head popping up under her chin. She arched to give him a better look.

Marcus came around behind her. He put his hands on her hips, and his mouth on the side of her neck, and he breathed in.

"Coach," he said, into her skin. That was all he said.

Tyler put his thumb on her nipple through the lace and rubbed. Not gently. The black vines dragged across the tip of her, back and forth, and she felt it in her clit and let her head fall back on Marcus's shoulder. Tyler watched her face while he did it, grinning, and then slid his hand down over her stomach and shoved it under the waistband of her skirt.

"Jesus," he said. "She's soaked through."

"Then do something about it, Brandt."

Otis took the back slit of her skirt between two enormous fingers and pulled. The seam went with a long ripping purr from her knee to her waist. The charcoal wool fell open off her ass and slid down her long legs, and she stood in the wreck of it, in pumps and seamed stockings and garters and a thong of the same black lace, a sliver of it over her mound and a string up the crack of her ass.

She was bare under it now, waxed smooth all over, and the lace was dark and clinging where she was wet.

Otis turned her around by the hips, and the room went quiet.

It was the ass the whole country had been looking at since September, and up close it was magnificent. It wasn't a girl's ass: twenty years of volleyball were packed under it, a little softer this season, so that it gave under a hand and then pushed back. Two big round cheeks, heavy, pressed close together and sitting up proud, with a deep soft crease under each one where it folded onto the back of her thigh. The garter straps framed it; the black string vanished between the cheeks. Three grown men stood looking at it as if it were the scoreboard. Otis's mouth had come open. He was rock hard and ready to fuck his gorgeous coach in every available hole.

Marcus turned her face up to his and kissed her deep, and two huge hands closed on her bare ass from behind and squeezed. Otis. She felt each finger sink into the soft give of her cheeks and find the muscle underneath, and her flesh bulge up between them.

Marcus slid his hand down between them and cupped her through it. He held still, the heat of his palm over all of her. Then two thick fingers stroked up the soaked lace and found her clit, and pressed, and rubbed it through the cloth in small hard circles until her knees went and he was holding her up by it.

Tyler hooked one finger in the center of the bra, between the cups, and looked at her.

"Do it," said Carol.

He tore it.

The lace gave at the gore with a zipper's rasp. The cups sprang apart, and her bare double D cups dropped out of the wire and swung free.

Her girls had always been more than she'd had any use for on a volleyball court. Full, heavy and lush, a real handful for any of these boys and more than that for most, with two pale triangles on them where her volleyball top had always been, the tan stopping in clean lines across the tops. They sat lower now than they had at twenty, with an honest slope to them and a soft round weight underneath, and the wire had left a red crease pressed into the undersides. Her nipples were wide and a dusky pinkish brown, puckered tight, the tips standing out. They swayed when she breathed, and nobody in the room moved.

"Look at that rack," Tyler said, almost reverent. He bent and sucked one nipple into his mouth, hard, his teeth at the edge of it. Marcus reached around and took the other from underneath, lifting it until the warm weight of it settled into his big hand, and squeezed, hungry for it, until her nipple pushed out swollen between his knuckles. Otis cupped her face, very carefully, as if it were the one breakable thing in the room, and kissed her. He tasted of sports drink and a split lip.

Marcus caught the string of the thong at her hip and snapped it.

It went with one tug. He peeled the lace away from her, and it clung, and came off her swollen cunt with a wet little pull, and he held it up, black and sodden, before he dropped it on the desk.

"On the table," he said.

Marcus and Otis lifted her between them and laid her on the padded table on her back, so that her head hung off one end and her hips were at the other. The vinyl was cold under her shoulders. She saw the room upside down: the whiteboard, her own handwriting, the strip light.

Tyler pushed his game pants down.

His cock came up out of them long and lean and flushed dark at the head, with a cocky upward curve to it like the rest of him, slick at the tip already. It bobbed above her face. His balls hung tight and shaved in the shadow under it. He smelled of sweat and turf and, under it, of himself, sharp and salty, and she opened her mouth before he'd asked.

He fed his cock in. Upside down, the angle ran him straight to the back of her throat on the first push, and she swallowed, and he went on past it. She felt her throat open and take him: the head forcing down into it, the long hard shaft following, her throat stretched around every inch of him so that she could feel the ridge of the head and the vein under it lodged low in her neck. Her nose was pressed against his balls. He held there. She couldn't breathe, and didn't want to, and she moaned around him and felt him jump in her throat at the sound.

"Fuck, Coach," Tyler said. "Fuck. You take it like a pro."

He pulled back to let her breathe, a long wet slide out, spit stringing from her lips to his cock, and drove back in.

At the other end of the table Marcus pushed his pants down and stood between her open knees.

She could only see him upside down, past Tyler's thighs. Marcus was broad and dense and smooth, and his cock stood out from him heavy and straight and very thick, darker than the rest of him, with a broad blunt head and a vein that wrapped around the shaft. It was the cock he had been careful with all last season, in hotel rooms, holding her as if she would spill. She felt the head of it touch her. She felt it rest there, just parting her, wet against wet.

He took her hips in both hands.

Then he went in.

One long push, all the way, and he didn't stop at any of the places he used to stop. The thick head spread her open and forced through, and her tight cunt stretched around him, a hot burning stretch at her entrance, and the shaft followed it in, inch after inch, dragging along her walls, filling her until he was jammed against the very end of her and his hips were flush with her ass. She cried out around Tyler's cock. Marcus held there, buried, and she felt the throb of him deep in her belly. Then he pulled back, slow, all the way to the head, and her cunt made a wet sucking sound letting him go.

He drove back in.

That was the end of slow. He fucked her the way he hit people, long and heavy from the hips. Every stroke slammed her up the table onto Tyler's dick, and Tyler shoved back into her throat to meet it, and she hung between them, filled at both ends. Her heavy tits swung back toward her chin on every thrust and slapped down again, rippling, the pale triangles flashing. Otis had one in his hand, squeezing in time, his other hand shoved down his own pants, and the sounds of the room came to her upside down: the wet smack of Marcus's hips, the squelch of her pussy around him, the thick choking gulp of her own throat, the table creaking, the shower music next door.

This, she thought, with her eyes streaming. This, every Saturday, forever.

Tyler went first. She felt him swell in her throat and pulled her head back off him, and he came across her ample titflesh in long hot ropes, the first one landing in the hollow of her throat and sliding down into her cleavage, then across one nipple, then the other, white and thick on her tan skin and running down into the crease the wire had left.

"Harder," she said, to Marcus, hoarse. "Don't you dare be careful."

He wasn't. He took her by the thighs, strong and tan above the black stocking tops, and lifted her round ass off the table and pounded into her, short and brutal and deep, and her heels came off and hit the floor one after the other, and she came with a shout that the music next door swallowed. She clamped down on him in long pulls. He groaned through it, held himself in her to the root, and came. She felt the heavy kick of him, and the heat flooding into her, and when he finally drew out his cum came after him, running out of her and down between her cheeks onto the vinyl.

Otis was standing there with his pants around his knees.

She had seen it last season, in an equipment room, and it still made her laugh out loud. Otis was six foot eight and three hundred and thirty pounds, wide and soft-looking over muscle, pale and pink across the shoulders, blond, with a chest furred pale gold. His cock was in proportion: the fattest she had ever had, and long with it, pale and pink-veined and dark red at the head, standing up out of a nest of blond hair over a heavy pair of balls. It bobbed with his pulse. A clear drop had run down from the slit to the vein.

"Coach," said Otis. "Can I pick you up?"

"Brenner. Pick me up."

He gathered her off the table as if she were a towel and stood her back against the lockers, then lifted her off her feet entirely, his forearms hooked under her knees, spreading her long stockinged legs wide in the air. She was five foot ten. She had never weighed nothing in her life. The steel was cold on her back. Marcus's cum ran out of her and dripped off the curve of her ass onto the floor.

Otis lowered her onto him.

It was slow because it had to be. The fat head pressed at her and wouldn't go, and he let her weight do it, and she sank, and felt herself stretch around him wider than she'd ever been stretched, a hot aching spread that took her breath, and then the head was in her and she sobbed. He held her there. Then he let her down by the inch, the whole thick shaft forcing up into her, filling her past full, until he was hard against the deepest part of her and there was still more of him outside her and she could feel him under her navel. Her thighs shook over his arms.

"You okay, Coach?"

"You've carried heavier."

He bounced her. He held her by the backs of her thighs and lifted her up his cock and dropped her back down onto it, and the lockers banged behind her on every stroke. Her cum-slick tits bounced and dragged against his chest, smearing Tyler's mess into the pale gold fur, her nipples raked by it on every stroke, and her athlete's ass smacked down against his thighs. Her stockinged feet kicked in the air behind his back, the seams twisting, toes pointed hard in the black silk. Every time he dropped her he hit bottom, a deep blunt jolt she felt in her teeth, and she clung to his neck with her mouth open against his hair and let him throw her up and down like something he had won.

She came again. It took her from the bottom and shook her whole body against him. Otis made a noise like a ship's horn and came in her, so much of it that she felt it fill her and spurt back out around him, and run hot down the crease of her cheeks and the backs of her thighs and soak into the tops of her stockings.

He set her on her feet, slow and careful. Her knees gave, and Marcus caught her by the elbow.

Otis looked down at himself. He was still hard.

"Coach," he said.

"The bus leaves in twelve minutes, Brenner."

---

She rode to the airport in the first seat of the first bus, her coat buttoned to the throat over the wreck of the blouse, no bra, no thong, her stockings gone tacky against the backs of her thighs. Her well-used cunt ached in the way she liked best.

Her phone had four hundred notifications.

It was the photo from the field, caught at the top of the second throw. Her coat flying open like wings, her hair a red flare against the lights, her mouth wide open, laughing. The silk pulled tight, her full breasts heaving up out of it, the lace showing at the top. And plain as day, a big hand spread flat over the curve of her ass, holding on.

It had been up for forty minutes. It was everywhere.

She knew the boys got a bit handsy sometimes. She looked at that hand for a long time, smiling.

Two seats behind her, Luis Reyes said, without looking up from his laptop, "Nice picture, Coach."

How She Got Here

The settlement landed on a Tuesday in March.

The lawyer called at ten in the morning and read her the number twice, because she asked him to. She hung up and stood in the kitchen in her running clothes and said it out loud, once, to the refrigerator.

Then she never said it again.

It was a drunk driver's insurer, and the bar that had served him, and the county that had left a light out on that corner for two years. Nobody on a jury in that county was going to let Coach's widow walk away with less, and for once in its life an insurance company didn't fight. It was more money than Simmons had made in his whole life of coaching other men's sons.

You should be doing things for yourself, Liam had said, in a motel room near a stadium, with his mouth on her hip.

The whole body in a day, Dana had said in California, with a glass of rosé and a twenty-six-year-old surfer named Kai.

She called Dana that afternoon. "I think," Carol said, "I'm coming to see you."

---

Dana had set for her at State, a hundred years ago, and Michelle had played the outside beside her. Now they lived four doors apart on the water in Newport Beach, in houses made of glass, divorced from the men who had paid for them, and they had rebuilt themselves the way you'd redo a kitchen. Dana had a chin she hadn't been born with. Michelle had a body she called "the investment." Kai surfed.

"Your body's fine," Dana said, the first night, the way you'd tell someone their car was fine. "It's everything else. Your hair is a coach's wife. You have a fleece in your suitcase. I saw it."

"It's a nice fleece."

"It's a fleece, Carol."

So she let them. A dermatologist on Pacific Coast Highway took one look at her, said "volleyball," and talked about sun damage like a priest discussing sin. Then he got out a laser. It felt like being snapped with a rubber band a thousand times, and for a week she hid in Dana's guest room with the blinds down. When her face and chest peeled, every spot from twenty summers on the court and the sideline came off with it. A regimen in nine glass bottles, morning and night, that she learned like a new defense.

And when she could face daylight again, a spa in Laguna, and her first full wax.

She remembered it afterward in pieces. The paper sheet crackling under her. A woman named Rae saying knees up, let them fall open, honey, and Carol lying there with her knees open under a lamp, more looked at than she had ever been on any court. Breathe out. The sting, like a flashbulb, again and again. And somewhere around the sixth strip, Rae's eyes flicking down and back up, because Carol was wet and they both knew it, and Rae saying nothing at all, which was worse.

Carol walked out into the sunshine on legs that didn't quite belong to her. Everything was there. She sat in the car and pressed her knees together.

"You're blushing," said Dana, enchanted. "Carol Simmons is blushing."

"Drive the car, Dana."

The clothes came last. Coats in camel and charcoal, pencil skirts that held her ass, silk blouses in ivory and oxblood and black. And from a little shop with no name on the door, lingerie of a kind she had never bought for herself until Liam bought it for her: French lace, silk, garter belts, seamed stockings, a whole drawer of it. She turned around in the fitting room in a black set to see the back, and the woman who owned the shop said, "Ah," the way a horse trainer says it.

She flew home with four new suitcases.

---

The volleyball housewives found out on a Thursday morning in April, at the Y, when a tall auburn woman in a cream cashmere coat and dark glasses came in from the parking lot and walked straight past them to the front desk.

"Can I help you, ma'am?" said Sherry Haldane, who had played beside her twice a week for nine years.

Carol took off her glasses.

Sherry dropped a ball. It rolled all the way across the court. Nobody went after it.

By lunchtime it was all over town. She's had work done. She's got a man in California. She's got two. Carol kept playing twice a week. She served harder than she used to. With sunscreen.

---

Coach Reyes called the week after.

He was the new head coach, hired in February out of Texas: forty-nine, compact, quiet, with gray in his beard. He had watched every snap of last year's playoff run. He asked to come to the house.

He sat in Simmons's chair in the den and asked if she still had the film from the semifinal. She put on the third quarter and stopped the tape on a third-and-eight, and told him what the safety had done wrong, and why the offense had known he'd do it. He watched her do it eleven more times.

"I don't need a special assistant," he said at last. "I need somebody to run that defense. I'll find a title by June."

"I want his," said Carol.

He looked at her. Then he nodded once.

So in May it went up on the athletic department website: Carol Simmons, Defensive Coordinator. The job her husband had held the year he met a cheerleader in a weight room.

---

Spring practice was in the rain, mostly. She stood on the forty in a camel coat and heeled Italian boots, a clipboard against her hip and a whistle around her neck, and never got mud on the coat.

Tyler Brandt walked up to her after the spring game with his helmet under his arm and said, chin up, "Same deal as last year, Coach?" and she said, "Better," and walked off, and heard him laugh behind her.

---

The clip came in week three.

A linebacker named DeShawn Okafor, a junior, twenty-one, who could run like a deer and think like one, blew a coverage on third and long and jogged to the sideline with his hands up, saying my bad, my bad.

Carol met him at the numbers. A camera caught all of it: six foot three of linebacker backing toward the bench, and a woman in four-inch heels and a perfect camel coat, cut short at the waist and hanging open over a fitted sweater, following him step for step with a clipboard. She jabbed the play at him one square at a time, her hair coming loose, her big breasts straining the fitted sweater with every furious word. When he tried to answer she stamped one heel into the turf, hard, and the camera, which had drifted around behind her by then, did not miss what that did to her ass in those tailored slacks. Then she put her palm flat over her face and said, every word lip-readable from the cheap seats, I am going to fucking kill myself. Nineteen seconds. At the end she straightened his face mask with two fingers, gently, patted his helmet, and pointed him at the field.

He made two interceptions in the second half.

By Monday it had eleven million views. By the next Saturday there were women in the stands in camel coats, and girls with signs that said YELL AT ME COACH, and men with signs that said worse.

Every show wanted her. She did one magazine, a long profile called The Coordinator, with a photo spread of her in the den, in silk, the film on the screen behind her and a picture of her and Simmons on the shelf. The writer asked about him for an hour. Carol talked about his football and nothing else.

Then the leggings.

The offer came from Vela, a sportswear brand every woman at the Y already wore. They didn't want her face. They wanted the clip, the part where she walked away from DeShawn Okafor, and the way her ass rolled in those tailored slacks on every step.

Carol laughed for a full minute. Then she signed.

They shot it on her own field at six in the morning. Black leggings, high-waisted and matte, with a seam up the back of each leg that curved under her ass. They shot her from behind for three hours, and the photographer kept saying "don't turn around, Coach," and she didn't.

The billboard went up over the interstate in a week, then over Times Square: her from behind on the yard lines, mid-stride. The black was stretched so tight it hid nothing. The light slid over each plump cheek mid-step, one lifting as the other settled, and beneath each one the leggings followed the soft crease where her ass met the top of her thigh, a single shadowed line the eye went to and stayed on. The seams drew it straight there. One line of white type: HOLD THE LINE.

The first run sold out in four hours. Her followers passed three million in two weeks. Sherry Haldane turned up to volleyball in a pair.

The nickname was the players'. Otis said it into a microphone, Coach Carol said we play angry today, and it was on a T-shirt by the end of the week, under her face, in the coat, mid-shout.

Coaching ate the hours she used to spend in the gym; her arms weren't what they'd been in March, and her stomach had gone a little soft over the muscle, and she didn't care. She missed the reading. Her Kindle sat on the nightstand with a werewolf on the lock screen and a book she hadn't finished since August.

In the middle of October, on the Sunday of the bye week, the magazine that had run The Coordinator threw a party on a rooftop in the city, and her publicist, who she had not had in March, made her go.

The Muse

She was by the bar, being told by a man from a sneaker company what her face was worth, when she saw the woman at the end of it.

Small. Five foot three at most, in flat shoes and a plain black dress, dark hair pinned up in a knot, tortoiseshell glasses, a club soda with lime. Nobody was talking to her. She looked like the town librarian who'd wandered into the wrong party and was enjoying it anyway. Carol knew the face from the back of five books.

She left the sneaker man mid-sentence.

"You're Vivienne Thorne."

"I am."

"Oh my God." Carol put a hand flat on her own chest. "I'm sorry. I'm Carol. I coach football. I've read every one of them. Book three, chapter fourteen... my Kindle opens to it by itself."

She could hear herself. She was forty-three years old and she sounded like a girl at a stage door, and she couldn't stop.

Vivienne looked up at her over the glasses, one long, frank second from Carol's heels to her hair, the way a woman looks at a dress in a window. Her eyes darted up and down Carol's body, as though she were tearing her clothes apart and fitting her into one of the most depraved sex scenes. Carol felt it in her knees.

"Oh, good," she said. "You're tall." She smiled, and it was not a librarian's smile at all. "Nobody ever tells me about chapter fourteen. They tell me about the worldbuilding."

"The worldbuilding's very good," said Carol, and then they were both laughing.

They found two stools at the end of the bar, and the bartender found them two martinis, and then two more. Somewhere in the third, Carol heard herself telling a woman she had met forty minutes ago about the perks of the job.

Not names. She wasn't that drunk. But the hotel rooms on the road. The film room after midnight. The equipment room, and a six-foot-eight defensive end who couldn't keep it down whenever she walked past. A whole suite on the night of the final, four of them, and a garter belt in team colors.

Vivienne didn't laugh. She put her chin on her hand and listened, and behind the tortoiseshell her eyes got brighter and brighter.

"Four," she said.

"Four."

"At once."

Carol drank. "I lost count after that."

Vivienne sat back and looked at her, the way she had looked at her when they met, except that now it was something else entirely. She wanted to watch Carol come apart, every second of it, and miss nothing.

Then she took an eyeliner pencil out of her bag, turned Carol's hand over, and wrote an address on the back of it. "Tomorrow night," she said. "Dinner. I'm an hour away. There's someone I'd like you to meet."

---

She had read all five Moonbound books until the spines would have broken if they'd had spines; the fifth had come out that summer, and she'd read it twice in August by flashlight in the film room. The third one, with the cabin and the snow and the alpha who carried the heroine up the mountain over his shoulder, opened on her Kindle to chapter fourteen by itself.

The next night a car took her into the city and up to a tower on the river, and an elevator with one button took her to the top of it.

The doors opened straight into the apartment. Pale stone floors, white walls hung with very large paintings, a wall of glass with the whole city lit up below it and the river running black through the middle, and a long terrace outside with trees on it, actual trees, forty floors up. A fire burned in a slab of marble.

Vivienne Thorne came across it barefoot, in black silk trousers and a cashmere sweater, her hair still up and the tortoiseshell glasses on.

"Come in," she said.

They ate at one end of a table for twelve, something a cook had left that only needed heating, and drank a bottle of something red, and started another.

"Can I tell you a secret," Vivienne said, later, on a white couch by the fire. She had her feet up under her. She took her glasses off, folded them, and set them on the table, and her whole face changed. "Since you've read them so many times."

"Please."

"Rurik isn't made up." Rurik was the alpha. Carol felt her face go hot. "The size of him. The hair. The way he picks Elsa up and puts her where he wants her. I don't have that much imagination, darling. I live with him."

Carol stared at her.

"He's Norwegian, he builds boats down at the harbor, and he's about seven feet tall. His name's Gunnar. He'll be up any minute." She turned her glass by the stem and looked at Carol over it. "And I'd like you to try him."

"You're serious."

"Entirely. I've been thinking about it since that clip. I want to see what he does with a woman your size." She smiled. "I like to watch him with other women. It's the only thing I like better than writing about him. Do you mind if I watch?"

Carol was a glass past sensible, loose and warm all the way through, and her cunt had been clenching since the word alpha. She knew exactly what she wanted. She thought about it for as long as it took to put her glass down.

"No," she said. "I don't mind."

"Lovely," said Vivienne, and stood up, and kissed her on the forehead, and went out of the room.

---

A few minutes later the elevator opened and the whole frame of it filled up with him, and he had to bow his head and turn his shoulders to come out.

Seven feet. It was not a figure of speech. Work jeans and a gray thermal shirt with the sleeves pushed up, sawdust on it, forearms thicker than her calves and furred in dense red-gold hair. Hands to match. A short full red beard, long hair tied back, very pale blue eyes. He smelled of cedar shavings and varnish and clean sweat and the cold off the river, and he looked at her standing by the fire in her dress and her heels the way a big dog looks at a gate somebody has left open.

"Hello," said Gunnar. His voice came up from somewhere under his ribs, deep and slow and thick with Norway. "Vivi says you like the books."

"I like the books," said Carol, faintly.

He crossed the room. It took him three steps. He stood in front of her, and she put her head back to look up at him, which she had not had to do for any man since she was fourteen, and he put one hand around the back of her neck. It went most of the way around.

"May I?"

"Yes."

He picked her up.

Off the floor, by the waist, straight up, until her face was level with his and her heels dangled at his knees, and he held her there with no effort at all and looked at her. Five foot ten of ex-volleyball player, held up like a cat. Then he kissed her. His beard was soft. His mouth was hot, and tasted of coffee and of cold air, and his tongue filled her mouth.

When he set her down she was shaking.

He didn't touch her again. He sat on the arm of the white couch, which put his eyes just under hers, and held both her hands in one of his.

"Before," he said. "I am very big, and you don't know me. When I play, I throw. I hold down. I don't ask every minute, because then it is not the game." He looked at her steadily. "So we have a word. Not stop. Women say stop and no and too much and mean more, and I won't guess. A word you would never say in a bed. You say it, I put you down, wherever you are, and it is finished. No questions."

"Okay."

"Anchor," said Gunnar. "Say it."

"Anchor."

"And if your mouth is busy, you hit me two times. Here." He put her palm flat on his forearm and tapped it twice with her own fingers. "Say it again."

"Anchor," said Carol. She was smiling so hard her face hurt. "Two taps."

"Good." Something went out of his shoulders. He grinned, and it changed his whole face. "Now I don't have to be careful."

He undid the wrap of her dress himself, one tie, and the silk fell open.

She had not, if she was honest, dressed only for dinner. Under the dark green silk was a set from the shop in Newport she'd never worn: champagne silk and ivory lace, a long-line bra that came down to her ribs in a corset of fine boning and sheer panels, the cups half lace and half nothing, so that the upper curves of her double D cups rose bare above the scalloped edge, lifted and pressed together by the boning, the firelight pooling gold in the deep line between them, and her nipples showed through the ivory as two dark shadows. A matching high-cut panty, ivory lace, cut so high at the hip that it went up over the bone. Nude stockings with a lace top. In the firelight it glowed against her tan.

Gunnar let out a breath through his nose.

He took his time. He turned her around by the shoulders and drew one fingertip down her spine to the edge of the lace, and she arched. Then he stopped, and she heard him breathe out. The ivory lace was cut high, and her whole bare ass sat up out of it, warm from the fire, the shelf of it sitting up under her narrow waist. He filled both hands with it and squeezed, slow and possessive, and held on. Each hand covered one whole cheek, from the crease of her thigh to the top of the curve: the first hands that ever had. For once, a man's hands were big enough for it. She didn't need to see his face; it was in his grip. He wanted to see his whole hand printed red across it. He bent and kissed the side of her neck while he held it, and her knees nearly went. "The billboard," he said into her hair, "is too small." He turned her back. He put his huge thumbs in the cups, over her nipples, and rubbed them through the lace in slow circles until they stood up hard against it and she could feel the pattern of the flowers on them. He cupped her through the high-cut panty, his whole palm, and the heat of him came through the lace. The lace was wet. He could feel it. He pressed in, one thick finger, so that the lace sank between her lips, and drew it up through her to her clit, and held it there.

"Now I take you to bed," he said.

He did not mean that she should walk.

He put her over his shoulder. One arm across the backs of her thighs, her ass up by his ear and her hair hanging down his back, and before he had taken a step he brought his free hand down, hard, one open palm across the whole of one bare cheek. The crack went off the glass. She felt the heat bloom into a handprint the size of a dinner plate, and felt herself gush into the lace. Then he carried her down the long pale hall that way, unhurried, past the paintings, and she hung there with her face against his spine and laughed out loud with sheer delight. Chapter fourteen. Exactly chapter fourteen. At the bedroom door he slapped the other cheek, hard and flat, and she felt the whole round weight of it shake, and she yelped and laughed harder.

---

The bedroom was huge and dim, with a bed built big enough for him and the city laid out beyond the glass. The wall facing the bed was a mirror, floor to ceiling and wall to wall, set flush into the plaster with no frame at all. Carol didn't look at it. She was upside down.

He threw her on the bed. Off his shoulder, through the air, and she landed on her back and bounced, and before she'd stopped he had her by the ankles and flipped her onto her stomach.

She felt it then, for the first time: the prickle at the back of her neck, the skin-awareness of being in a room with someone's eyes on her. She looked around. There was nobody. The door was shut. The window, and forty floors of nothing. The mirror, full of a giant pulling his shirt over his head.

Then she stopped looking, because he had.

He was hairy all over, the way the books said: a thick red-gold pelt across a broad chest, down over a hard belly, up across his shoulders. Under it he was pale and freckled, long heavy bones and slabs of muscle that came from timber, not weights. He undid his belt and pushed the jeans down and kicked them away.

She stopped breathing for a second.

His cock hung heavy between his thighs, half hard. As she watched, his cock rose. It wasn't as big as Otis Brenner's. Nothing was. It should have frightened her less, and it frightened her more. It came up out of a thick red thatch that ran on up the root of it, straight and long, pale on the shaft and roped with blue veins, the foreskin drawing back off a fat dark head as it filled. It didn't curve and it didn't nod. It stood out from him like a spear, so hard it looked carved, and his balls hung under it big and heavy and furred red. It smelled, when he came close, of musk and sweat and cedar.

"Oh my God," said Carol. "Rurik."

He laughed, a big delighted boom of a laugh. Then he took hold of her.

He put her where he wanted her for the next hour and never once asked her where she wanted to be.

He knelt on the bed behind her and pulled her up onto her knees by the hips, and peeled the ivory lace down over the tanned curve of her ass and left it stretched around her thighs, and looked at her. She felt him look. She felt the cool air on her bare slit, the new smoothness of it, and the drip she couldn't help. He put his face there. His beard was soft on the insides of her thighs, on the bare band of skin above her stocking tops, and his tongue was huge and flat and hot, and he dragged it up through the whole of her in one long stroke from her clit to her ass, and she cried out into the sheets. He did it again. Then he settled in and ate her, greedy and unhurried, his whole mouth on her cunt, sucking her lips in, tongue stabbing into her and then up to her clit and around it, around it, his thumbs spreading her wide open, the wet sounds loud in the big room. She ground back on his face. She came in under two minutes, with her face in the pillow and her hands fisted in the sheet, and he didn't stop, and she came again, and he lifted his head with his beard shining.

He flipped her over.

She was on her back, and he had both her ankles in one hand, slim in their nude silk, and lifted her long legs straight up, and then pushed them back over her head until her knees were by her ears and her ass came off the bed, and he held her there folded with one hand. He tore the lace off her legs with the other. It went with a soft rip.

He fitted the head of his cock against her. She looked down the length of herself, past her own knees, past her soft, supple breasts pressed up by the bra, and watched.

He pushed.

It wouldn't go. Even as wet as she was, that cock would not go. He leaned into it, slowly, and she felt herself start to give: her lips spreading around that fat pink head, stretching, wider, a burning ring of stretch that made her gasp, too much, too much, and then the ridge of it popped through and she shouted. He stopped. He held there, with only the head of him in her, and her whole cunt fluttering around it, and looked at her face. He didn't ask. He waited, and she didn't say the word.

"Don't stop," Carol said.

He didn't. He sank into her by the inch, with her folded under him, and his weight did the work. Every inch was a fight and she lost every one of them gladly. She felt him going up into her, the thick shaft forcing her open around it, the big veins dragging along her walls, his straight hard cock pressing on something deep at the front of her that made her eyes roll. He filled her and kept filling her. When he hit the end of her there was still a hand's width of him outside, and he pressed on, gently, and she felt the deep blunt ache of it in her belly, and something in her opened a little further that had never opened, and he sank another inch and stopped, buried, his red-furred hips against the backs of her thighs.

She couldn't breathe around him. She could feel her pulse in him.

Then he fucked her.

Long strokes, the whole of him, out to the head and in to the end, with her folded up under him and his hand holding her ankles over her head, and the bed shoved across the floor an inch each time. Her stuffed cunt made a thick wet sound on every stroke. With his free hand he hooked the boned lace and dragged both cups down, and her tits spilled out swollen over the edge into the cool air, and every stroke rocked them up toward her throat and let them fall back, her nipples aching for a mouth. She could see all of it past her knees: her pussy stretched pale and shining around that thick pink shaft, clinging to it on every outstroke, the lips dragged out after him, her wet coating him to the root. She came around him, helpless, crying out, and he fucked her through it.

He knew how. That was the thing she had not been ready for. Her boys were strong and eager and twenty-two, and every one of them, sooner or later, looked up at her to be told: slower, there, now, like that. She had run every bed she'd been in since the funeral the way she ran a film session. Gunnar didn't look up. He didn't need telling. He changed the angle before she knew she wanted it changed, slowed down just before she would have begged him to, held her down at exactly the moment she'd have tried to take over, and she opened her mouth to give an instruction and found she didn't have one. There was nothing to call.

She wasn't Coach Carol. She was Elsa in the snow, with Rurik over her.

She was prey.

He pulled out. She was so empty she gasped.

He picked her up.

He stood up off the bed with her in his arms and turned her around in the air, her back against his chest, his forearms hooked under her knees and spreading them wide, and he lowered her onto his cock like that, standing, facing the room. She sank down onto him under her own weight and screamed. He bounced her. He lifted her up off him and dropped her down onto him, again and again, all of her weight landing on that cock, and she was facing the mirror.

She saw herself in it.

She saw a woman she didn't know. A tan, wild-haired woman held up in the air, spread open in a giant's arms, her thighs hooked over forearms furred red-gold, the champagne bra shoved down to her ribs and her bare tits jolting and slapping together on every drop, shining with sweat. Her bare and waxed cunt split wide open around that pale veined cock, and the shine of it, and the drip running off his balls. Her mouth open. Her eyes enormous.

The feeling of being watched came back so hard she shivered with it. From everywhere. From nowhere. She didn't know where, and not knowing went through her like current.

"Look at you," Gunnar said in her ear. "Look at you on me."

"Harder," said Carol, to the mirror. "Throw me."

He threw her.

He threw her onto the bed on her face and was on her before she'd landed, and pushed back into her from behind in one stroke, all the way to the end, and she howled into the mattress. He pinned both her wrists over her head in one huge hand and lay his whole weight down on her: three hundred pounds of hairy, sweating Norwegian, his chest fur scraping her back, his breath in her ear, and he fucked her into the mattress with short heavy strokes that drove the breath out of her on every one, his hips smacking into the plush curve of her ass, which bounced back to meet him every time. His balls slapped her clit. The headboard banged the wall. Her free fingers lay flat on his forearm the whole time, where he'd put them, and never tapped.

He pulled out, rolled onto his back, and lifted her astride him by the waist, facing him, and sat her down on his cock to the root. His hands went most of the way around her waist. He bounced her on him. Up every inch of him, and down. Up. Down. Her tits flew. Her hair flew. The air went out of her every time she landed and her thighs gave and she couldn't hold herself up and didn't need to; he held her up, he lifted her and dropped her, and she rode it, out of her head.

He was watching her face. He had been the whole time, she realized.

He pulled her down onto him one last time, all the way, and held her there by the hips, grinding up into the deepest part of her, and roared. She felt his cock swell in her and kick, and the heat of it, so much heat, pulse after pulse flooding into the very end of her, and she came around it with a long thin wail she didn't know she owned, clenching on him, shaking from her scalp down, her toes curling tight in their nude silk.

When he lifted her off him, his cum poured out of her. Thick and hot, down the insides of her thighs, onto his belly, onto the sheet.

He laid her down on her side and pulled the blanket over her, very gently, and kissed her shoulder. "Water," he said, and went out to get it.

She lay there, ruined, with the city glittering behind her, and looked at the mirror.

It was a very big mirror. Wall to wall, with no frame, and no reason for it in a room that already had the whole city for a view. There was a hairline of light down one edge of it where the plaster met the glass. On the other side of it, very faintly, now that the bed had stopped banging, she could hear a low electric hum. It stopped.

Then a soft, satisfied, breathless laugh, a few feet away. And the sound of a woman sighing.

Carol put her face in the pillow and laughed.

---

Later, in a robe of Vivienne's that only came to her knees, she sat on the edge of the enormous bed with the ledger out of her bag and open on her lap, and wrote it down.

Gunnar. Seven feet. Builds boats. Thrown.

Gunnar came back with the water and read it over her shoulder. He looked delighted.

"May I sign?"

Before she could answer he set his hand down flat on the open book.

When he lifted it there was a handprint across both pages, margin to margin, over Gunnar and Liam and Otis Brenner and all the rest of them.

Vivienne, in the doorway in her own robe, looked at it and smiled.

"He signs everything like that," she said.

The Dressing Room

Late Night with Danny Kell taped at five-thirty in a converted theater in New York, and she had watched it in bed for fifteen years. Danny Kell had seen her through a husband who lived at the facility from August to January, and every one of those long dark winters. He was fifty-one, lean, silver at the temples, with a crooked boyish grin and a way of leaning across the desk to his guests as if nobody else in the world were in the room.

By then there was something on every off day. A morning show on Monday, a shoot on Tuesday, a panel, a podcast, a dinner with a brand. She was in the film room less. She had stopped staying late with the linebackers, and she had stopped noticing that she'd stopped. She liked it too much. People still looked at her the way men had always looked at her, but there was something else in it now, a kind of reverence, and she had found she liked that best of all.

She wasn't free the night Danny Kell's people called. It didn't matter. It was Danny Kell. She chartered a jet out of the regional airport straight after practice, and a helicopter from the airfield to the West Side, and walked into the theater with eleven minutes to spare.

He leaned across the desk to her for eleven minutes on a Thursday in late October. She was funny. She hadn't known she would be. She did DeShawn's my bad in a squeak, and the audience screamed. At the end he made her stand up and yell at him, finger in his face, and he fell off his chair.

Afterward his producer said Danny would love it if she stopped by. There was champagne in his dressing room, then more. He told her she was the best guest they'd had all year, and he said it looking at her mouth. He put a hand on her knee, and she let it stay there, and then she put her own over it and moved it up.

She was in a dress the stylist had chosen, cobalt silk jersey, long-sleeved, with a neckline plunging to her sternum, so that the inner swells of her proud breasts showed bare all the way down, pressed close by the silk, and it clung everywhere it touched. Under it, nothing above the waist; the dress held her up by itself and the silk showed every shift of her tits when she laughed. Below the waist, a cobalt lace thong with a little gold ring at each hip, and sheer black hold-ups with a lace band.

He kissed her. He was good at it. He'd had practice. His hands went straight to her famous ass and stayed there, kneading her in big, eager handfuls through the silk jersey, which hid nothing.

"I've been looking at this since you walked out," he said, against her throat. "The whole audience was. God."

He pulled the neckline aside and her tits tumbled heavy out of the silk into his hands, more than he could hold, and he made a sound like a man on a game show. He bent and sucked a nipple into his mouth, and rolled the other between his fingers, and she put her head back against the mirror and enjoyed it. He pushed the dress up over her hips and found the thong and stopped to look. He ran a finger along the lace, over her mound, down into the wet of her, and rubbed her through it until the cobalt went black.

"You're dripping," he said, delighted, and said it again. "You're dripping for me."

She was. She was tipsy and flattered and pleased with herself, and Danny Kell had his hand in her panties, and she wanted him.

She opened his pants herself. His cock was eager and pink, a good handful, circumcised and straight, flushed dark at the head and already wet at the tip. She stroked him twice and he said "wait, wait," and turned her around.

He bent her over the vanity. The counter was cold under her stiff nipples. The bulbs blazed around the mirror like a carnival, and she could see herself in it, flushed, her tits squashed soft against the counter among the pots of powder. He hooked a finger through each gold ring and drew the thong down to the lace bands of her hold-ups, and left it stretched between her thighs, and pushed into her, all the way in one stroke, and she gasped.

It was fast and it was showy. He fucked her the way he did his monologue, all rhythm and pleasure in himself, slapping her tan ass to see it bounce and watching his own face in the mirror. "Yeah," he said, "yeah, Coach, yeah." The vanity rattled. A brush rolled off. She pushed back on him and tightened around him and said, "Is that all, Danny?" and he laughed and gave it to her harder, and she rubbed her clit against the edge of the counter on every stroke and came, quick and bright, with her mouth open against the glass. He lasted another minute. He pulled out and came across her reddened ass and the backs of her thighs, above the lace of her hold-ups, in hot spurts, with a groan he could have done on air.

She stayed bent over the counter, catching her breath, smiling at the bulbs.

That was when she saw the phone.

It was propped against the base of the mirror, behind a jar of setting powder, angled up at the vanity. The screen was dark, dimmed down, the way you'd set it if you didn't want anyone to see it. But the little red dot at the top was glowing.

She straightened up. She pulled the thong up and the dress down. She picked up the phone.

"Hey," said Danny. "Hey, that's..."

It had been running for twenty-three minutes. She pressed stop. She found the file. She turned the screen so he could see it, and she held his eyes, and she deleted it. Then she went into the deleted folder, and deleted it there. Then she opened his cloud settings and checked them, while he stood there with his pants around his knees.

"Carol. Come on. It's just for me. I'd never..."

She put the phone down on the vanity, very gently.

"Pull your pants up, Danny," she said. "I don't do this kind of talk with a man's dick out."

He pulled them up.

She did not raise her voice. She stood a step closer, in her heels, taller than him, and told him exactly what he was. She told him she had a lawyer and eleven million people who would believe every word she said about him by Sunday morning. She told him that if one frame of tonight ever showed up anywhere in the world, she would spend every cent her husband's death had bought her making sure he never sat behind a desk again. She told him he'd been in her bedroom every night for fifteen years and she'd never once guessed he was this small.

"Okay," Danny Kell said. He was gray. "Okay."

"Say thank you, Danny."

"Thank you."

"For what?"

He looked at her. "For deleting it."

"Good boy."

Then she picked his phone up off the vanity, walked into his little bathroom, and dropped it in the toilet. She flushed for good measure.

She washed up at his little sink and fixed her face in his mirror, taking her time. Then she picked up her bag and her coat and walked out past his producer in the corridor, who took one look at her and stood back against the wall.

In the car to the hotel her hands were shaking. Fifteen years of that grin across the desk, and he'd said best guest all year, and she had not looked once at the vanity.

She took out her phone. Her lock screen was the photo from the road win: the coat flying open, the torn silk straining over her glorious breasts, a player's hand spread on her ass. She had set it herself, the night it went up, and smiled at it every time she checked the time.

She looked at it until the screen went dark. Then she changed it to the team photo from August, all hundred and ten of them in rows, and put the phone face down on the seat.

She called her publicist and told her: no more events until the season was over. Then she turned it off and rode the rest of the way in the dark.

Liam

He came to the homecoming game.

He'd texted her in September, the clip with three fire emojis, and she'd sent back thank you and nothing else. His own season was over. He bought a ticket like anybody else, and after the game he came down to the rail at the mouth of the tunnel, where she always stopped to sign things, and waited.

She saw him from forty yards away. He was thirty and exactly the same: tall and loose, a grin that had gotten him out of a lot of trouble and into more, a ball cap on backwards. He waved. She waved back. And then a woman from the network had her by the elbow, and a boy wanted her to sign his cast, and two girls in camel coats were sobbing, and there were cameras, and a sheriff's deputy was moving people back from the rail for her, and by the time she looked up again he was standing a little apart with his hands in his pockets, watching her with an expression she'd never seen on him.

She signed a program and handed it back. She leaned over the rail and said into his ear, "Ten o'clock. The house. Don't be early."

He was early.

---

She opened the door in a robe and walked away from him into the house. He followed her into the living room and stopped.

Under the robe was his set. The one he'd brought to the motel, which she'd never have bought herself: deep cherry-red lace, a plunging bra that held her up from underneath and covered almost nothing, its center gore sunk deep in the shadowed cleft between her double D cups, her nipples pushing dark through the lace, the garter belt that came with it, and sheer black stockings on her long legs. Liam had kept the thong. She'd had a new one made to match in Newport, three strings and a triangle of the same red. And heels. She stood in the middle of her own living room, in the lamplight, and let him look.

He wasn't grinning now. She turned around for him, the red lace losing the fight with her ass, and he looked at it with his mouth a little open.

"Sit down," said Carol.

He sat on the couch. She took his cap off and dropped it on the floor. She knelt on the couch astride his thighs and took his face in her hands and kissed him until he groaned, and when his hands came up to her waist she took them by the wrists and put them on the back of the couch.

"Not yet."

He kept them there. She unbuttoned his shirt and opened it, and ran her palms down his chest, which was smooth and lean and harder than last winter. She sat back on his knees and undid his jeans and took his cock out. She knew it now: long, slimmer than her husband's, and curved up a little, smooth and hot, with a vein along the top and a wide flared head flushed dark, and a drop already shining at the slit. She ran her thumb over it and watched his stomach jump.

"Here's what you get," she said. "You get to watch me. You get to touch me when I say. And you don't come until I've come twice."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Coach."

"Yes, Coach," said Liam, and his voice cracked, and she smiled.

She rubbed herself on him through the lace first. She held his cock flat against his belly with her palm and sat on it, the red lace between them, and slid her cunt up the whole underside of his shaft and down, slowly, so that he could feel how wet she was and see the lace go dark and shining. Then she let him have one hand. He put it where she knew he would, on her perfect tits, and drew one cup of the lace down so the full weight of her settled warm into his palm, and thumbed her nipple until it stiffened and she hissed. She pulled the thong aside by the strings and held him up and fitted the head of him into her, and stopped, and made him look at it.

Then she sank down on him, all the way, her head going back, and felt every inch of him slide up into her and fill her, until she was sitting on his hips with all of him inside her. She rocked there. Then she rode him.

She took exactly what she wanted. She rode him in long slow rolls with her hands on his shoulders, grinding her clit down into the root of him at the bottom of every stroke, and she reached back and unhooked the red lace and dropped it on his chest, and let her tits sway bare in his face, her nipples grazing his lips on the upstroke, and when he reached for them she let him. Then his hands slid down her back and took her ass, both of them, full, spreading her on him as she rode, and she bent and kissed him, open-mouthed and greedy, with his fingers sunk into her and squeezing on every stroke. She loved this more than anything. She came the first time like that, his tongue in her mouth and her firm ass in his hands. She didn't stop. She leaned back with her hands on his knees, her stockinged thighs spread wide over his, which put the head of him dragging along the front wall of her, and rode him harder, the wet slap of her ass on his thighs loud in her own living room, his cock shining with her every time she lifted. She came again, harder, clenching around him in long hard pulls.

"Now," she said.

He grabbed her hips and drove up into her four times and came with his face buried in the damp heat of her cleavage, breathing her in, so hard she felt the heat of it deep inside her.

---

They lay on the rug afterward, in front of the empty fireplace, with the couch throw over them. She had her head on his chest. His cum was drying on her thigh. Somewhere out in the dark a car went by.

"You're different," Liam said.

"I know."

"You had a deputy." He was quiet a moment. Then he said, very carefully, the way you'd step onto ice, "Carol. Can I ask you something. You don't have to answer."

She knew what it was before he said it.

"Will you ever forgive him?"

She lay there with her ear on his heartbeat and thought about it, really thought, for the first time.

She thought about the hotel room in January with four of her players in it. She thought about Tyler's deal, and the equipment room with Otis, and the visitors' locker room, and the wolf in the penthouse, and a phone on a vanity in New York she'd been too pleased with herself to see. His ledger, six years of it at the front. Hers at the back, two seasons in, already ran twice as long.

He had one a season, she thought. I have the whole defense.

She started laughing. Then she was crying, and she didn't know which had come first. Liam held on to her and didn't say anything at all, which was the best thing he had ever done.

"Yes," she said, when she could. She wiped her face on his chest. She was smiling. "Yeah. I think I just did."

He kissed the top of her head.

"Good," he said. "He was a good coach, you know. He was a shit husband, but he was a good coach."

"He was a very good coach," said Carol, and closed her eyes.

The Feature

Two time zones away, in a kitchen that smelled of menthols and microwave popcorn, a woman named Darlene was doing her nails at the table when her phone lit up.

Her sister had sent it as a joke. isnt that ur baby daddys wife?? lol. A link to a magazine. The Coordinator. There was a photo spread: a tall auburn woman in black silk in a den full of film, a big house behind her with a lake view, a closet the size of Darlene's kitchen, a camel coat that probably cost more than her car. A framed picture on the shelf, small and in the background, of a man Darlene had not spoken to in twenty-two years.

She read the whole thing twice. Then she scrolled back up to the paragraph near the end, the one about the drunk driver and the bar and the county and the lawsuit, which said only that the family had reached a settlement and declined to discuss its terms.

Darlene looked at the closet for a long time.

Then she opened a new tab and typed, how much do you get when someone dies drunk driver lawsuit.

She read for twenty minutes, with one nail still wet. Then she called her daughter.

"Holly. Baby. Are you sitting down?"
