Ben sat at the kitchen counter, his tall frame hunched over a mug of coffee that had gone lukewarm, his long fingers wrapped around the ceramic with a grip that had turned his knuckles white. He wore yesterday's jeans and a fresh polo shirt, fitted against his lean torso. His eyes were shadowed from a night of fractured sleep.
He heard the shower shut off in the bathroom and the sound of Ana's soft padding back to their room. She emerged down the stairs a short while later, a vision of understated beauty that made his chest ache with a complicated, guilty tenderness.
She wore a fitted navy turtle-neck sweater that followed the athletic taper of her figure, tucked into dark indigo jeans that sat high on her waist, emphasising her long legs. Her dark hair, damp at the ends, fell past her shoulders in loose waves, and her face, scrubbed clean of makeup, glowed naturally.
She gave him a kiss on the lips, her mouth slightly minted from toothpaste. "You're up early for a change."
"Yeah, didn't sleep great. I couldn't really settle last night."
"Still thinking about that work thing. I thought I'd helped you take your mind off of that." She looked at him with a sparkle in her bright blue eyes.
"You did," Ben said. "You were amazing last night. Don't worry about me, I'm fine."
"My complicated husband," she teased. "Even a good shag can't resolve him."
"I'm going to pop out for pastries," she announced, sliding gold hoops into her ears. "Those ones that Rob bought yesterday were delicious. I'm going to see if I can find that shop. May be a while; back in twenty minutes or so."
Ben turned, his mouth opening to say something -- be careful, I love you -- but the words died unformed. He merely nodded, a tight movement of his jaw. "Take your time."
She kissed him again, her hand resting briefly on his chest. Then she was gone, the flat door clicking shut behind her.
Ben stood in the resulting quiet, his heart rate escalating, a rhythmic thud against his ribs. He heard Rob moving about in his bedroom. The confrontation he'd rehearsed in the dark hours of the night now seeming imminent. 'Now', he thought. 'Do it now. Fix this. Draw the line.'
When Rob emerged, dressed in jeans and a faded band t-shirt, his hair damp, he headed straight for the coffee machine. "Morning. Ana off already?"
"Yeah." Ben's own voice came out tighter than he meant it to. He set his mug down harder than necessary against the counter, the clink of ceramic on granite loud in the quiet kitchen. "Rob. We need to talk about yesterday."
Something flickered behind Rob's eyes, not surprise, Ben noted with an odd chill, but readiness. Like he'd been waiting for this exact conversation to happen.
"Yesterday," Rob repeated slowly, testing the word like a man tasting wine before deciding to drink it. "You mean the shop?"
"You know exactly what I mean." Ben's jaw worked, a muscle ticking beneath his skin. He crossed his arms, though the gesture did nothing to steady the churn in his stomach. "You were watching Ana. Through the curtain. While she was changing."
Silence. A long, thick silence, filled only with the tick of the wall clock and the muffled hum of traffic outside.
Rob didn't flinch. He'd expected accusation, maybe even a fist. Instead he found himself searching Ben's face, the flush creeping up his throat, the way his eyes wouldn't quite hold steady, and understanding bloomed slow and delicious.
'He's not angry', Rob realized, with a private thrill. 'He's ashamed. But not at me.'
"I saw," Rob said, moving over to the sofa, sitting down and spreading his arms along the couch back like a man settling in for a long, comfortable conversation. "I also saw you pull that curtain a little wider, mate."
Ben's arms tightened across his chest, nails biting crescents into his own biceps. "That was--" He stopped. Started again. "That shouldn't have happened. Any of it. It was wrong, Rob."
"Wrong." Rob turned the word over, a slow smile beginning to crawl across his mouth. "Or just... new?"
Ben's gaze snapped up, something raw and frightened flickering there before he could smooth it away. "Don't."
"Don't what?" Rob spread his palms, all faux innocence, though his heart was hammering a quick, greedy rhythm beneath his ribs.
"Don't make this into something it's not." Ben's voice cracked, just slightly, on the last word. He turned away, pacing to the window, staring out at the gray afternoon street below.
'This is exactly something', Rob thought, watching the tense line of Ben's shoulders, the way his hands had found their way into his pockets, fists no doubt clenched inside the fabric.
"Look." Rob stood, unfolding his bulk from the couch with a grunt, crossing the room to stand a few feet behind Ben. not touching, just present, a warm heavy weight at his back. "Wanting to show off what's yours isn't some sick thing, Ben. It's human. Every guy who's ever had a woman like Ana on his arm has felt it. That flicker of look what I have and you don't."
Ben's throat bobbed with a hard swallow. "That's not..."
"Isn't it?" Rob's voice dropped, softer now, almost gentle, the practised gentleness of a man who'd talked dozens of women out of their better judgment and knew precisely how patience could unravel resistance faster than force ever could. "You think I didn't see your face yesterday? You weren't ashamed, mate. You were excited."
The word landed like a slap, and Ben's spine went rigid, his reflection in the window glass showing a flush spreading up from his collar to his ears. He said nothing. He couldn't say anything, because Rob wasn't wrong, and the truth of it curdled in his gut like guilt and want tangled into a single ugly knot.
'There it is', Rob thought, savoring the silence, the way Ben's shoulders had dropped a fraction, fight draining out of them. 'There's the crack. Now we widen it.'
"There's nothing wrong with a fantasy, Ben." Rob's hand finally landed on Ben's shoulder, warm and heavy, thumb pressing once, briefly, like a promise. "Everybody's got one. Doesn't mean you act on it. Doesn't mean anything has to change." A pause, calculated, deliberate. "Unless you want it to."
Ben turned then, finally, and the look on his face was something caught between horror and hope; a man standing at the edge of a cliff he hadn't known existed until someone pointed out the view. "Ana would never..."
"I know." Rob cut him off smoothly, hands raised in mock surrender, though his eyes stayed sharp, calculating, drinking in every flicker of Ben's expression. "She's devoted. Faithful. That's not what I'm saying."
He let a beat pass, let the words settle like sediment before continuing. "I'm saying if you ever wanted to... explore that, even just in your head, even just talking about it -- I'm safe. I'm not gonna go blab to the guys down the pub. I'm not gonna look at her different." Liar, some quieter, more honest part of him whispered, but he silenced it easily, the way he always did. "I'm your mate. That's all this is."
Rob's voice dropped, becoming conversational, almost gentle. "It's not about 'wrong'. It's about desire. A complicated one, sure. But yours. You've got a fucking goddess for a wife, mate. A woman every bloke looks at. And you get to take her home. But sometimes... sometimes the thrill isn't just in having. It's in sharing the view. Knowing others want what's yours."
He took a step closer, his voice a low, persuasive murmur. "You think I don't know you, Ben? We've been mates since we were kids. You get off on it. On the glances in the pub. On the way lads' voices change when they talk about her. Yesterday... that was just a more direct version. And you liked it. The sharing is part of the kick, isn't it?"
Ben felt exposed, flayed open. Rob was articulating the secret shape of his own hidden thoughts, giving them a terrifying solidity. He wanted to deny it, to punch his friend in the mouth for the violation. But his body remembered the illicit thrill, and the denial died in his throat.
"It's a dangerous game," Ben managed, his voice hoarse. He stared at Rob for a long moment, something unreadable passing behind his eyes; want, shame, confusion, all braided together too tight to separate. Then he stepped back, putting the safety of the room's width between them, running a hand through his hair with a shaky exhale.
"I need to think," Ben muttered, more to himself than to Rob, before turning and disappearing up the stairs toward the bedroom, the door clicking softly shut behind him.
Rob remained standing in the empty living room, a smile of satisfaction forming on his face.
'That conversation couldn't have gone much better', he thought. He'd been concerned that Ben would get angry. Defensive. Maybe throw a punch, storm off. Instead there'd been that terrible, thrilling honesty in Ben's eyes -- not rejection, not disgust, but something far more dangerous: consideration.
Rob sank back onto the couch, mind racing through possibilities he hadn't quite dared imagine before now.
Ben closed the door of the guest bedroom softly behind him and then fell onto the bed heavily, the mattress groaning under his weight. He lay on his back, staring at the pristine white ceiling. 'What just happened?' he asked the empty room.
His mind replayed the conversation, stripping away his own defensive lines to examine the raw structure Rob had built. Wanting to show off your wife is not unusual. You shouldn't be ashamed. A safe option. A harmless game.
A part of him, the deep, hidden part that throbbed with dark arousal, latched onto the idea. It whispered that Rob was right. This was a way to touch the fantasy without ever making it real. Ana would be none the wiser. Her dignity would remain perfectly intact. It would just be a secret between him and Rob. A visual feast for his own twisted appetite, served to his best friend.
Another part, the part that loved Ana with a protective ferocity, recoiled in nauseated horror. He had already betrayed her yesterday. By opening that curtain, he had made her an unwitting participant in his fantasy. He had handed a piece of her privacy, a glimpse of her intimate self, to Rob like a party favour. And now he was considering doing it again? Systematically? The thought of Rob's hungry, possessive eyes roving over Ana's body with Ben's tacit permission made his skin crawl even as his cock stirred traitorously in his jeans.
Early in their relationship Ben had made a playful remark to Ana about the possibility of a three-some with another girl. Ana had been genuinely hurt and shocked that he would consider another girl. So the topic of adding additional women or men into their relationship had never come up again.
Ana was happy to be sexually adventurous with her boyfriend, now husband, but there was most definitely a line drawn that the adventure remained between the two of them.
But maybe, maybe what Rob had proposed could be a middle ground. Nothing physical could ever happen. She'd made that crystal clear. This could be a celebration of her, privately, that she never had to know about.
Either way he understood with a sickening clarity that a line had not just been crossed; it had been erased. The confusion he felt wasn't about what was right or wrong any more. Rob had masterfully blurred that distinction. The confusion was now about what he, Ben, wanted to do next. And the terrifying, thrilling truth was that he didn't know.
The path back to innocence seemed closed off, receding behind him in the fog. Ahead, there was only the dim, tantalising outline of a new, secret game, and his best friend waiting to play it with him.

Ana always enjoyed walking through new cities, experiencing the sights and smells of a new place. She walked with the unhurried confidence of someone on holiday, savouring the warmth that radiated through the paper bag of pastries tucked into the crook of her arm. She was rounding the corner by a little independent bookshop when a voice called her name.
"Ana? Ana, is that you?"
Ana turned, and recognition bloomed slow and pleasant across her face. Eliska stood at the corner, waiting for the crossing signal, one hand lifted in a wave.
She was shorter than Ana by several inches, her frame more compact but no less striking, dark hair, spilling in loose waves past her shoulders, a stark contrast against the burnt-orange wool coat she wore open over a fitted grey turtle-neck that did nothing to hide the generous curve of her chest. Her face held sharp Slavic cheekbones softened by full lips currently curled into a smile.
The light changed and she crossed toward Ana with quick, purposeful strides. Eliska had always carried herself proudly, the quiet authority of a woman who'd clawed her way to junior partner at one of the city's most prestigious architecture firms by the age of twenty-five.
"Eliska!" Ana's smile was genuine, warm. "God, it's so good to see you! What are you doing in this part of town?"
"Site visit. There's a new residential block going up around the corner--I'm the project architect." Eliska said it with the casual pride of someone who'd earned the right to say it plainly, no false modesty. "You?"
"Visiting Rob, actually. Ben and I are staying at his place for the week."
Something shifted behind Eliska's eyes. It was brief, a flicker, there and gone, like a shadow passing over water, but Ana caught it.
"Right," Eliska said. Her fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around the strap of her portfolio case. "That's. That's nice."
That was not a nice reaction to something nice.
"Everything okay?" Ana asked.
Eliska glanced away, toward the traffic, toward anywhere that wasn't Ana's searching blue eyes. 'How do I say this without sounding like a jealous, jilted ex-girlfriend? How do I explain what he did without admitting what I let happen, what I couldn't even remember clearly the next morning?' Her jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
"Ana, look--I don't know how to say this without sounding..." She exhaled, a short humourless laugh escaping her lips. "Just. Be careful with Rob. He's not always what he seems."
Ana's brow furrowed, more amused than alarmed. "Rob? He's harmless. A bit of a lad, sure, always has been, but..."
"I'm serious." Eliska's hand found Ana's forearm, gripping with unexpected urgency. "Things happened when we were together. Things I don't--" She stopped herself, swallowing whatever confession had risen in her throat. 'I can't say it. I can't tell her what it felt like waking up with no memory of how I had got there.' "Just watch yourself around him. Please."
Ana studied the other girl's face, searching for the anger she expected to find--the telltale bitterness of a breakup gone sour, but found something else instead. Something that looked almost like fear.
Still, Ana had known Rob for six years. He'd been there the night she met Ben, had stood as best man at their wedding, had sent flowers when her mother passed. Her trust in him was absolute.
'She's still hurting from it. That's all this is'. Ana softened her tone, reached out and touched Eliska's forearm lightly, the gesture meant to comfort rather than dismiss. "I hear you. But Rob's known Ben since childhood. He's family, in his own way. I appreciate you looking out for me, I do. But I think I know him well enough."
Eliska's mouth opened, then closed. Something moved across her face, not anger, but a kind of defeated resignation. 'She wouldn't believe me even if I told her everything. And God, the shame of it.'
"Of course," Eliska said instead, her face breaking into a weak smile, the professional mask sliding back into place. "Just. Take care of yourself, yeah? It was good seeing you."
They exchanged numbers, promises of coffee that both women suspected might never materialize, and then parted ways. Ana walked the remaining two blocks back to Rob's flat with the pastry bag, Eliska's warning already fading into the periphery of her thoughts.
The flat smelled of fresh coffee when Ana let herself back in to the flat.
Rob stood by the kitchen counter scrolling through his phone. He looked up as she entered. "There she is. Morning. Get the good ones?"
"Almond croissants and a couple of pain au chocolat." Ana set the bag on the counter, shrugging out of her coat. She didn't mention Eliska. There was nothing to mention, really--just an ex-girlfriend's misplaced bitterness, hardly worth repeating.
Hearing his wife return, Ben came down from the bedroom. He reached out and caught her wrist as she passed, tugged her towards him for a kiss, brief and easy.
"So," Rob said around a mouthful of croissant, dropping onto a stool, "grand plans for today, Mrs. Culture?"
"I want to go back to the Northern Quarter." Ana's eyes lit with genuine enthusiasm. "Actually take time to look through those antique shops this time, not just window-shop. I saw this gorgeous brass mirror in one window, art deco, that I haven't stopped thinking about."
Ben laughed, low and warm. "Of course you have."
"Don't mock me."
"I'm not mocking you. I love that you get like this." He reached across and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, his thumb grazing her cheekbone briefly, a small gesture that carried the whole quiet architecture of their marriage within it. "We'll go. I'll even carry the bags without complaining."
Ana smiled. "You'll complain."
"Okay. I'll complain a little."
*****
The day unfolded the way Ana had wanted it to. A brief tram ride into the Northern Quarter, the three of them standing near the doors as the city flowed past, and then exploring through shop after shop, cobbled streets and painted doors.
Ben walked close to her, his hand occasionally finding the curve of her lower back.
Rob walked ahead, turning to talk, to point, to make some joke she half-heard.
Ana bought a small watercolour of a Spanish courtyard, a little too expensive, but the scene reminded her of her childhood, and she carried it folded in a paper sleeve. Ben bought a vinyl record he did not need.
Lunch came late, in a pub tucked down a side street. They took a table near the window, where the afternoon sun fell in a long beam across the wood. Rob ordered three pints before anyone had spoken; Ben lifted his and drank. Ana sipped hers, the cold foam bitter on her tongue, and let the heat of the room seep into her.
Ana's hand found Ben's knee then, as if summoned, he covered it with his own.
"What next?" she asked.
"Whatever you want," Ben said.
The afternoon stretched before them, and Ana leaned into it, satisfied.
By mid-afternoon, they had drifted into the shopping district near Deansgate. Ana paused before a store-front that specialized in athletic wear. Racks of lycra in electric colors, mannequins posed mid-stride in shorts that left nothing to the imagination, sports bras cut high and tight.
She'd seen the girls at her gym back home wearing exactly this kind of thing; confident, casual, unbothered, and some small itch of curiosity pulled at her now, standing here on holiday where nobody knew her, where nobody would think anything of it.
"I need new gym shorts," she said, turning to Ben with a smile that was almost shy. "I might try something on."
Ben raised an eyebrow, something flickering behind his eyes too quick to name. "Yeah?"
"Why not." She smiled. "We're on holiday."
Ben glanced at the window. He saw gym clothes, tight, revealing gym clothes, and a familiar cascade of thoughts and feelings began in his chest. He looked at Rob. Rob looked back. A look that contained the memory of yesterday, the conversation from this morning.
'This is happening again.' He thought.
Ben swallowed. "Sure," he said. "Go ahead."
Inside the shop, Ana moved with the same focused, sensual pleasure she had displayed yesterday: touching fabrics, checking construction, holding items up against her body in front of the mirror.
The fitting room was similar to yesterday's too, wood-panelled, full-length mirror, heavy curtain. Ana disappeared behind the curtain with a pair of shorts and a cropped top, the fabric barely weighing anything in her hands, more like a second skin than clothing.
She undressed slowly in the small mirrored space, catching her own reflection in fragments, the curve of her waist, the muscle definition in her thighs from years of running and tennis, the small dark birthmark just below her left hip that Ben liked to trace with his thumb in bed.
She unclasped her bra, folding it over the hook, because the top demanded it, the lycra too thin and too tight to allow for anything underneath. She pulled on the charcoal compression shorts first. They were tight, tighter than anything she normally wore, the fabric stretching across her buttocks and her hips and her thighs in a way that felt less like clothing and more like a second skin. She tugged them into place, adjusting the waistband, smoothing the fabric over her stomach and her hips. She looked in the mirror.
The shorts were short. Very short. They ended high on her thighs, well above mid-thigh, the lower curve of her buttocks visible at the back, the fabric stretched tight across her full, rounded arse. In the front, the fabric pressed flat against her body, and she could see, clearly, unmistakably, the outline of her pubic bone, the cleft of her vagina, the precise shape and topography of her body beneath the thin grey material. There was no ambiguity. No room for imagination.
She pulled on the cropped top. It was a tight, elasticated band of the same compression fabric, designed to hold the breasts in place during high-impact activity. She pulled it over her head and settled it into position, and she looked in the mirror, and she inhaled sharply.
She looked naked.
Not literally, the fabric covered her. But it covered her in a way that concealed nothing. Her small breasts were pressed flat against her chest by the compression fabric, their shape clearly defined, the round curve of each breast, her areola visible through the thin material, the distinct point of each nipple pressing against the charcoal fabric like a button beneath a cushion. Her stomach was bare between the top and the shorts, a strip of tanned, toned flesh that showed the faint lines of her abdominal muscles.
She stared at herself. The woman in the mirror was not a woman she recognised, not the conservative, stylish, controlled woman who dressed to impress without revealing. The woman in the mirror was, something else. Athletic. Sexual. Overt.
She looked like a woman who was comfortable with being looked at, who enjoyed being looked at, who chose clothing that invited looking.
'You look like a porn star.'
The thought arrived unbidden, sharp and slightly cruel, and she almost laughed. But there was truth in it, a truth that made her uncomfortable, that made her want to take the clothes off and put her own clothes back on and leave the shop and forget this moment of curiosity had ever happened.
But another part of her, a smaller, quieter part that she didn't fully acknowledge, was looking at the woman in the mirror with something other than discomfort. The fabric felt good against her skin. The compression was supportive, secure, like being held.
Her body looked good. She could see that objectively, aesthetically, the way she assessed her appearance every morning in the bathroom mirror. Her legs looked long and lean. Her stomach looked flat and toned. Her arse looked, well, it was the best her arse had ever looked in clothing.
She stood in front of the mirror, oscillating between discomfort and satisfaction, and she couldn't make a decision. "Ben?" she called through the curtain. "Come tell me if this looks stupid."
Outside, on the two chairs by the fitting rooms, Rob looked at Ben. Ben looked at Rob. And between them, in the space that separated the two chairs, a look passed that was heavy with meaning: Rob's words from earlier. I'm a safe option.
Ben stood. He walked to the curtain.
"Yeah?" he said, his voice slightly unsteady.
"Can you look at this and tell me honestly? I can't decide if it's--just come in."
He pushed through the curtain.
He stopped.
The breath left his body. Not gradually, not in a slow exhale, it left all at once, a single, involuntary evacuation of air that left his lungs empty and his chest hollow.
He stood in the entrance to the fitting room, his hand on the curtain, and he stared at his wife.
Ana stood before the full-length mirror. She was, in the most literal sense, dressed. But she looked, she looked like a porn star.
The thought was identical to the one Ana had had moments before, and it hit Ben with the same force. He had never seen her like this. In six years, in six years of sex, of intimacy, of seeing her in every state of dress and undress, in lingerie and swimwear and nothing at all, he had never seen her present herself this way. She was always controlled, always curated. And now she was standing in front of him in an outfit that revealed everything while technically concealing it, and the effect was devastating.
His mouth went dry. His cock stirred. And the feeling, the feeling in his stomach, the thing that lived in the windowless room, roared into life.
'Rob should see this.'
The thought arrived with the force of a physical blow. It was not a decision; it was a reflex, an involuntary response triggered by the overwhelming, annihilating surge of the feeling in his stomach.
He turned his head, fractionally, and looked at Rob. Rob was sitting in his chair, fifteen feet away, watching. Waiting. His face was neutral, composed.
Ben looked at Ana. She was watching him, her head slightly tilted, waiting for his verdict. She didn't know what was about to happen.
'Don't.'
'Do it.'
The two commands arrived simultaneously, cancelling each other out, leaving him in the void, the same void he had stood in yesterday, the same paralysis, the same inability to act in either direction. He stood there, his hand on the curtain, his wife in front of him, his friend behind him, and the feeling roared, and the shame whispered, and neither won.
And then, with a movement that felt both utterly deliberate and completely outside his control, he whipped the curtain open.
Ana's reaction was instant.
She saw the curtain move, not a nudge, not an accidental displacement, but a deliberate, full sweep of the fabric that opened the fitting room to the shop like a door being pulled wide, and her body responded before her mind could catch up. Her hands flew to her chest, crossing over her breasts, her arms folding tight against her body. She turned away from the opening, presenting her back to the shop, her arse, clad in the compression shorts, the fabric clinging to every curve, suddenly and completely visible to anyone who cared to look.
"Ben!" she hissed. The word was sharp, furious, compressed into a whisper that carried more force than a shout. "Shut the curtain! What are you doing?"
Ben stood beside the open curtain, his hand still on the fabric, and he did not shut it.
"Ben. I mean it. Shut it. Now."
He looked at her. She was glaring at him over her shoulder, blue eyes blazing, her dark hair swinging across her face, her expression a compound of fury and disbelief. Her arms were crossed over her chest, her hands gripping her own shoulders, her body curled into the protective posture of a woman whose privacy had been violated.
He should have shut the curtain. Every instinct, every moral, social, marital instinct, told him to shut the curtain. His wife was standing in front of him in the most revealing clothing she had ever worn, she was asking him, telling him, to close the curtain, and he was her husband, and his job was to protect her, and--
"Rob, come and have a look. We need a second opinion."
The words came out of his mouth before the decision to speak them had fully formed in his mind. They were calm, casual, the tone of a man asking a friend's opinion on a sofa in a furniture shop. They were also, he knew with the part of his brain that still functioned normally, insane.
Ana's face changed. The fury was still there, but it was joined now by something else, confusion, shock, the dawning disbelief of a woman who was trying to reconcile the man standing in front of her with the man she thought she'd married.
"Ben, what the fuck are you..."
Rob appeared at Ben's shoulder.
He had crossed the fifteen feet from the chair to the fitting room in seconds, fast, purposeful, the stride of a man who had been waiting for this invitation and was not going to waste time pretending to hesitate. He stepped up beside Ben, and the two of them stood at the entrance to the fitting room, side by side, shoulder to shoulder, and they looked at Ana.
She was standing with her back to them, her arms crossed over her chest, her body turned at an angle that presented her profile. She was hunched, protective, her shoulders drawn up, her spine curved, the posture of a woman trying to make herself smaller, less visible, less present. But the compression shorts, and the effect of the posture on the compression shorts, undermined every attempt at concealment. The fabric stretched tighter across her arse as she curled forward, the fabric pulling into the cleft between her buttocks, outlining each cheek with agonising precision, the lower curve of each buttock visible beneath the hem.
Rob looked. He looked with the unhurried, methodical attention of a man studying a masterpiece.
"It looks great, Ana," he said. His voice was steady, warm, the voice of a friend offering an honest opinion. Only the slight hoarseness betrayed the state of his body. "Really great."
"Rob, I--" Ana's voice was strangled, caught between anger and embarrassment and a growing, bewildered horror. She couldn't look at him. She couldn't look at Ben. She was standing in the most revealing thing she had ever worn, in a public shop, being looked at by two men, her husband and his friend, and the situation was so far outside the parameters of her experience that she didn't have a response for it. She didn't know how to be in this moment. She didn't know what to do with her hands, her body, her face.
"Ben," she said, and her voice was lower now, quieter, the fury replaced by something more vulnerable. "Please. Close the curtain."
Ben looked at her. He felt the feeling, the enormous, consuming, annihilating feeling, and he made a decision that he would, in later months, identify as the precise moment when the line between fantasy and reality was crossed.
"Drop your hands, Ana."
The words hung in the air between them. Three words, six syllables, spoken in the calm, measured tone of a husband making a request of his wife. But the request was not normal. The request was, for Ana, unthinkable.
She stared at him. Her blue eyes were wide, the pupils dilated, and in them he could see the rapid, frantic processing of a mind trying to understand what was happening. Her lips were parted. Her breathing had quickened, shallow, rapid, the breathing of a woman in a state of physiological stress. Her hands were gripping her shoulders so tightly that her knuckles were white.
"Ben. I'm not--"
"Drop your hands. We can't give an opinion if you are covered up. Let us see."
Let us see. The us was deliberate. Not let me see, that would have been intimate, marital, a private moment between husband and wife. Let us see was something else. It was an invitation, an inclusion, a declaration that the looking was not singular but plural, that Rob's presence was not accidental but desired.
Ana's face did something that Ben had never seen it do. It crumpled. Not into tears, she was too proud, too controlled for tears in a public place, but into an expression of such concentrated disbelief and hurt that it hit him like a fist.
And then, slowly, reluctantly, with the rigid, mechanical movement of a body acting against its own will, she turned her body to face them and she dropped her hands.
Her arms fell to her sides. Her chest was exposed, the charcoal-grey compression top stretched across her small breasts, their shape clearly defined, her nipples pressing against the thin fabric in two rigid points. Her stomach was bare, flat, toned, tanned skin. And below, the compression shorts clung to her hips and her pelvis and the space between her thighs, outlining the shape of her body with clinical precision.
She stood there. In the fitting room, under the warm light, her body on display, being looked at by two men. She stood straight: shoulders back, spine straight, chin up, because she was Ana, and Ana did not slouch, Ana did not cower, Ana did not make herself smaller. If she was going to be looked at, and she was being looked at, she could feel their eyes on her like a physical touch, then she would be looked at with her dignity intact, even if the dignity was a fiction and the looking was a violation.
She glared at Ben. The glare was pure, concentrated fury, the kind of glare that, in the privacy of their home, would have been followed by a door slamming and a silence that lasted for days. But they were not at home. They were in a shop. And Rob was standing right there.
Rob was looking at her. He was looking at every inch of her, and his face was wearing an expression she had never seen on it before. His eyes were wide, his pupils blown, his lips slightly parted.
"Turn around."
The voice was Ben's.
"Turn around. Let us see the back."
She looked at Ben. She looked at him with an expression that contained a question, not are you really asking me to do this? because the answer to that was obviously yes, but something more fundamental: who are you? Who was this man who was asking his wife to model gym clothes for his friend? Who was this man who had whipped open a curtain and exposed her and was now asking her to turn around and show more?
She held his gaze for a long moment. The silence between them was enormous.
And then she turned.
She turned slowly, deliberately, with the controlled precision of a woman who had decided that she would do this, because the alternative was to cause a scene, to shout, to cry, to make everything worse, and she would do it with as much grace as she could muster. She pivoted on the balls of her feet, her body rotating through ninety degrees, then one-eighty, until her back was to them.
The compression shorts from behind were spectacular. The fabric clung to her buttocks so that every curve, every contour, every subtle variation in the topography of her arse was visible. The lower curve of each buttock was bare below the hem, the place where her arse met her thigh, the crease that Ben loved and that she had guarded so carefully from every man who had wanted it. Her thighs were long, toned, compressed by the shorts.
Rob made a sound. It was small, involuntary, barely audible, a short, sharp intake of breath that was almost a gasp. Ana heard it and it landed on her skin like a slap.
"It looks great," Rob said. His voice was slightly unsteady now, the careful composure cracking, just slightly, under the weight of what he was seeing. "Really, Ana. It looks, it looks amazing on you."
"Thank you," she said, and her voice was flat, controlled, stripped of all inflection. She had retreated behind the wall, the wall of composure, of dignity, of the carefully constructed persona that she wore in public. She was Ana. She was proud. She was in control. She was not standing in a fitting room in revealing gym clothes while two men looked at her arse. She was not. She was somewhere else, behind the wall, where no one could touch her.
She turned back to face them. She stood straight. She did not cover herself.
"Are we done?" she said.
Ben nodded. He looked slightly dazed, the expression of a man who has jumped off a cliff and is only now, in mid-air, beginning to process the consequences. "Yeah. Yeah, we're done. I think you should buy it."
"You should definitely buy it," Rob agreed. He was looking at her face now, not her body, and his expression had rearranged itself into the warm, friendly, familiar mask of the Rob she knew. "It looks really good on you. Honestly."
"Fine," she said.
She reached for the curtain and yanked it shut so hard the metal rings screamed against the rail, and stood there a long moment, breathing hard, staring at her own flushed reflection, feeling the sting of humiliation settle cold and heavy in her chest.
'He's never done anything like that before.' She peeled the outfit off with sharp, angry motions. 'Why would he do that to me?'
She didn't know. She didn't understand. Ben had never, not in six years, ever done anything like that. He had never exposed her, never asked her to display herself like that. It was so far outside the parameters of their marriage, of her understanding of who he was, that she couldn't quite comprehend it.
She pulled off the compression top and shorts with rough, angry movements, dressing herself in her own clothes and gathered up the items she was buying, because she had said she would, because refusing now would be an admission that something was wrong, and she was not ready to admit that, not here, not now.
She pulled back the curtain and walked to the counter. She paid. She did not look at Ben or Rob. She carried her bag out of the shop and stood on the pavement in the afternoon sun and waited for them to follow.
'I'll talk to him', she thought. 'When we're alone. Not in front of Rob. I'll talk to him, and he'll explain, and it will make sense, and everything will be fine.'
Before anyone had a chance to speak though, fate intervened. Ben's phone buzzed, the screen lighting up with his manager's name, and he sighed with the particular resignation of a man who already knew what the message would say before he read it.
"Server's down," he said, showing Ana the screen like proof of innocence. "Sorry. I have to deal with this."
Ana's mouth was still set in a thin line and she only nodded, not trusting herself to speak without the conversation turning into the argument she desperately wanted to have, but not here, not in public.
He stepped away, pressing the phone to his ear. "Hi, yeah, I saw. When?"
Ana heard the words, clipped, professional, the voice he used for work calls. A pause. Ben's free hand came up to rub the back of his neck, a gesture Ana knew well. It meant stress. It meant a problem he couldn't ignore.
He hung up. He looked at Ana, and his face was a battlefield: competing emotions fighting for control. Stress from the call. Guilt, already forming.
"Work emergency," he said. "I need to sort this before it becomes a whole thing."
"Now?" Ana's voice was tight. Controlled. The voice of a woman who was filing her own crisis under later because someone else's crisis had taken priority.
"I'm sorry. I know the timing is... yeah. I'm sorry. I need to go back to the flat and use Rob's computer. It'll take maybe a couple of hours."
"Couple of hours," Ana repeated, flatly.
"I'm sorry, honey. I'll make it up to you. I promise."
He looked at her, and she looked at him, and between them, unspoken, the fitting room hung like a ghost, visible, present, impossible to ignore and impossible to address. She opened her mouth. She closed it.
"Fine," she said. "Go."
He kissed her forehead, a brief, guilty press of lips, and turned to Rob. "Mate, I'm really sorry. Can I use your computer? It's an emergency."
"Course. No worries. I'll message you my PC password so you can log in."
Ben grabbed the bag from the sports shop and their earlier purchases and left them there, outside the sports shop, Ana's eyes following him with a mixture of confusion and hurt she hadn't yet found the words for.
*****
Rob and Ana found a small coffee shop and took a table by the window. The events of the sports shop and Ben's abrupt departure had unsettled the atmosphere, but they soon got talking and after the first fifteen minutes it was easy.
Rob told stories about work, about his disaster of a love life, performing self-deprecation with the practiced ease of a man who had always been the funny one in any room. Ana laughed in the right places.
Then she made the mistake.
"I saw Eliska, actually. This morning. In town."
Rob's hand stopped halfway to his cup.
It was only a second; a stutter, a flicker behind those warm eyes that Ana almost didn't catch. His throat worked. When he lifted the coffee to his lips, the motion was deliberate, steady, too steady, and he held it there a beat longer than drinking required.
Fuck. Fuck. What did she say? What did that bitch tell her? Behind the cup, Rob's mind was sprinting, reassembling. Stay calm. She'd have left already if she knew. She wouldn't be sitting here drinking coffee with me.
"Eliska." He set the cup down gently. His face arranged itself into something soft, something wounded. "How... how is she?"
"She seemed well." Ana watched him. "A little strange, honestly. Intense."
Rob exhaled slowly through his nose, a man carrying weight.
"I should tell you something," he said, improvising. "I've not talked to anyone about this yet. Not even Ben." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I ended it with Eliska. It was me. And I did it badly, Ana. It was getting serious, really serious, talking about moving in together and, and I panicked. Just bolted. Ended it out of nowhere. She never understood why. I never gave her a proper explanation."
"Oh," Ana said.
"She was devastated. Confused. I think it..." He shook his head, jaw tightening. "I think it did something to her. She took it very hard."
'That explains it', Ana thought. 'That explains the weirdness. The warning. She's not well. She's still fixated on him; of course she'd warn his friends away. Poor woman.'
"That's sad," Ana said, and meant it. "You two were good together. She seems like a lovely girl."
"She is. She's brilliant." Rob leaned forward, forearms on the table, and his eyes had gone glassy with what looked like genuine regret. "I feel guilty, Ana. I'm not proud of how I acted. Every day. I keep thinking maybe there's still a chance. Maybe if I could just show her I'm sorry."
"Then show her."
"I want to." He hesitated, then let it tumble out, boyish and helpless. "I want to buy her something. A gift. Not a grand gesture, just something to open the door. But I'm hopeless at that stuff. I have no idea what she'd like. Where to even start." His eyes came up to meet hers, and there was something carefully crafted in his expression. "Actually, would you help me? You've got taste. And you've spent time with her; you'd know better than I would what suits her."
"Of course," she said. "I'd be happy to." She genuinely meant it. She longed for the opportunity to have a proper couples friendship, another indicator of her new, married life.
The first jewellery shop they went to was all glass cases. Rob moved through it with the startled look of a man significantly out of his comfort zone. Then he stopped in front of a necklace. Fine silver chain, a small pendant, a single dark stone, blue-grey, almost black at the edges.
"That one," he said. "Eliska loved simple things. Elegant."
"It is elegant," Ana agreed.
The assistant unlocked the case and laid it on the velvet tray. Rob lifted it between two fingers and then paused, frowning, turning it over in the light.
"Problem is, I've never been able to picture it. Jewellery on people. I look at it in the case and it means nothing." He looked up at Ana, and his expression was open, almost sheepish. "Would you mind? Just hold it against your neck? You look like her, same hair. It'd give me an idea."
'That's flattering', Ana thought first, automatically. Then, beneath it, quieter: 'Is it?'
But it was harmless. She took the necklace and held it against her collarbone and Rob stepped back to look at her with the assessing tilt of a painter studying a canvas.
"Turn a little. Into the light."
She turned. The assistant hovered, smiling her professional smile. Ana felt suddenly conspicuous. 'This is fine', she told herself. 'This is what friends do. They help each other out.'
Rob studied her for a long moment. Too long, some part of her noted; a long, unhurried moment in which his gaze moved from her throat to her face and back again, and something in it made her want to look away, though she didn't.
"No," Rob said finally, shaking his head with a rueful little laugh. "Doesn't matter. Beautiful necklace, but." He gestured for the assistant to take it back. "Eliska was always complaining. Too much jewellery, never enough occasions to wear it. She said it sat in boxes. She said," he caught Ana's eye, grinning, "she said a woman would rather have something she could actually wear."
"Clothes, then," Ana said, relieved to hand the necklace back, to step out of the light. "That's easy."
"Clothes." Rob pointed a finger at her, delighted. "You're a genius."
'Good', he thought, trailing her out of the shop, watching her. 'Good girl. That was easy.'
They walked further, passing store-fronts of varying character, until Rob stopped before a lingerie boutique. The window display was a riot of silk and lace, mannequins posed in erotic positions. Ana stiffened, her feminist sensibilities recoiling at the overt objectification of the display.
Rob turned to her, his face questioning.
"Not lingerie," she said, her voice firm.
They found a clothes shop three streets over from the jewellers. Ana browsed with real engagement now; this was territory she understood, the language of cut and drape. She pulled two blouses from the rack and held them up for comparison, talking about which suited Eliska's frame.
"She's shorter than me," Ana was saying. "And fuller in the chest, so this cut would..."
"Hang on." Rob had drifted to another rack. He turned back holding a top, a soft dove-grey knit, fitted, with a wide elegant neckline. "What about this?"
Ana considered it. "It's nice. Very her, actually."
"Yeah? See, I can't tell." He held it up, squinted at it, then at Ana, and the moment replayed itself: the same frown, the same sheepish tilt of the head. "Same problem as the necklace. It looks like nothing on the hanger. You'd be doing me a massive favour if you'd just try it on. Quick. Then I know."
Ana didn't take it.
The silence stretched one second, two. Somewhere behind them a hanger scraped along a rail.
"Rob, I don't think..." She laughed, lightly. "I'm sure it would suit her. You don't need to see it on someone."
"But I do, though." His voice was warm, reasonable, and utterly immovable. He didn't lower the top. "Come on, Ana. Thirty seconds. You've got almost exactly her build. Well, you're taller, but the shape." His eyes moved over her once, top to bottom, unhurried. "It'll hang the same. I just need to see it on a person."
'I don't want to', she thought, clearly, simply.
And yet.
He was Ben's oldest friend. He was standing there holding a top for his ex-girlfriend, asking for help, looking at her with that open, pleading face, and she could feel the shape of how refusal would land: cold, dramatic, accusing him of something he hadn't done, making a scene in a quiet shop over nothing. Her wonky behaviour compass, Ben called it, teasing and fond. Sometimes you misread things, love. Sometimes you're the weird one.
What if this was that?
"Fine," she heard herself say. "Quickly."
In the changing room, with the curtain drawn, Ana stood for a moment in her bra and held the grey knit in her hands and looked at her own face in the mirror. Her cheeks were faintly flushed. Ridiculous, she told her reflection. 'It's a top. You're being absurd.'
She pulled it on. It fit closely, skimming her small breasts, her flat stomach, the fabric soft as water. The wide neckline exposed her collarbones entirely, the tops of her shoulders. She took a breath, drew the curtain back, and stepped out.
Rob was waiting directly in front of the changing area, arms folded, and his eyes came up as she emerged and went over her slowly. Slowly. From her bare collarbones down the line of the knit over her body to her hips, and then back up again to her face, and he did not hurry, and the shop was very quiet, and the wordless music pulsed low under everything.
"Turn around," he said.
Ana turned. She felt his gaze on her back like heat from a lamp, moving down her spine, over the curve of her backside in her jeans, down the long length of her legs. Her skin prickled. Her arms hung stiff at her sides; she didn't know where to put her hands, standing here like a mannequin in a shop while her husband's friend inspected her.
'This is normal', she thought fiercely. 'Women try on clothes. Friends look. This is normal.'
"Good," Rob said at last. His voice had gone lower. "That'll do her nicely. You can take it off."
The relief of the changing room curtain closing behind her was almost dizzying.
She thought it was over. She came out in her own clothes, the grey knit folded over her arm, already composing the sentence that would steer them toward the till and then toward home.
Rob was holding a dress.
It was navy, beautiful, undeniably beautiful: a fitted cut with an open neckline and a hem that would end well above the knee.
"No," she said, before he'd even spoken.
"Ana." His voice was gentle, and it was also not a request. He held the dress out, and there was something new in his manner now, something that had been fed by the last twenty minutes, by the necklace, by the top, by the way she had stood and turned under his eyes and done what she was told. "This is the one. I can feel it. She'd love this. But I need to see it, same as before."
"It's very short," Ana said. Her voice came out tighter than she intended. "Eliska wouldn't wear that." Ana estimated it would finish a good six inches above Eliska's knee. On her, with her legs, it would be shorter. Shorter than anything she had worn in years. Shorter than anything she owned.
"Eliska loves short dresses." He stepped closer. He was inside her space now, and the shop felt suddenly very small, the racks of clothing like walls. "She has legs just like yours and she shows them off every chance she got. Trust me." A pause. Then, softer, with a smile that didn't reach his eyes: "It's for her, Ana. Not for you. What's the harm?"
What's the harm.
The words echoed strangely in her head. Because what was the harm? She could not produce an answer that didn't sound hysterical inside her own skull. 'The harm is that I don't want to'. That was not a reason she could say out loud to a friend asking for help. 'The harm is the way you look at me while I model' it was an accusation she could not prove, that would shatter a six-year friendship, that would make her the woman who made everything about herself, who flattered herself that Ben's old mate fancied her.
Her compass spun. She hated it. She hated the uncertainty more than she hated the dress.
"Fine," she said quietly, and took it from his hands.
'Yes', thought Rob, and had to consciously relax his jaw. 'Yes, yes, yes.'
In the changing room, Ana undressed slowly. Then she put the dress on. The navy fabric slid over her skin cool and smooth, clinging as she pulled it up over her hips, and when she looked in the mirror she barely recognized herself. The dress ended high on her thighs. Her legs went on forever beneath it, bare, toned, and the fabric moulded itself to the curve of her backside, the flat plane of her stomach, the small perfect shapes of her breasts. She looked...
She looked like a woman on display.
'It's for Eliska', she told herself. But her hands were trembling slightly as she pulled the curtain back.
Rob was sitting now, in the armchair the shop provided for waiting partners, one ankle crossed over his knee, and when she stepped out his entire body went still.
The silence was enormous.
He looked at her the way a man looks at a painting he owns. No flicker of the sheepish boyishness now; his eyes moved over her with total, unhurried possession, down her legs, up her legs, lingering on her thighs, her hips, her mouth. The air between them felt thick enough to touch. Ana's skin burned everywhere his gaze landed, a crawling heat that she hated, that she stood in anyway, because leaving now, fleeing to the changing room, would mean admitting how uncomfortable she really was.
"Turn," he said.
She turned. Slowly. The hem whispered against her thighs. She could feel the air conditioning cold on the backs of her legs, could feel exactly where the fabric ended and her bare skin began, and she had never in her life been so conscious of her own body as an object, a thing arranged in a space for someone's viewing.
'I am a married woman', she thought, and the thought came out strange, almost pleading. 'I am a professional. I am intelligent. I am not this.'
"Walk," Rob said. "To the mirror and back. I want to see how it moves."
And Ana, Ana who did not take orders, who had never taken orders from any man, walked. To the mirror and back. Her heels clicked on the pale wood floor. She kept her chin high the whole way, kept her face composed and cool, and that composure was the only thing she had left, the last thin coin of her dignity, and she spent it walking up and down a boutique in a too-short dress while her husband's oldest friend watched her from an armchair with hunger in his eyes.
"Perfect," Rob said, when she stopped in front of him. His voice was rough now, barely smoothed over. He stood, and he was close, and she could smell his aftershave. "We'll take it. She'll love it."
He smiled at her, warm as ever, the funny old friend, and held the curtain open for her like a gentleman as she walked back into the cubicle.
'And she didn't say no', he thought, watching the curtain swing shut, his heart thudding slow and heavy with triumph. 'Not once. Not really.'
The bus trip home was quiet. Ana and Rob sat on opposite seats across the aisle, the boutique bag between them next to Rob. Ana sat with her hands on her lap and stared out the window at the streets sliding past, and her reflection ghosted faintly in the glass, blue-eyed, composed, unreadable.
'What just happened?'
'Nothing happened', she answered herself. 'A friend needed help choosing a gift. She had tried on some clothes. People did that every day.'
'You stood there in a dress up to your thighs while a man stared at you. In a dress that you would never dare wear in public. You walked up and down for him like a girl on a runway, and Ben wasn't there, and you didn't say a word.'
Her fingers tightened against her trousers.
But what was she going to say? "Ben, your friend Rob asked me to model a dress and I felt uncomfortable"? Ben would laugh, gently, lovingly, and ask if her compass was acting up again. And maybe it was. That was the worst of it, the doubt at the centre of everything: maybe this was her. Maybe she was the strange one, the misreader of innocent situations, the proud woman who imagined slights and stares where there was only friendship. She had done it before. Ben could name the occasions, teasing, fond.
And if she told him, and it was nothing, she risked poisoning her friendship with Rob. For nothing. For her own vanity, for her own flattering suspicion that a man couldn't keep his eyes off her.
'I won't tell him', she decided, and the decision settled over her, soft, quiet, and very, very cold. 'There's nothing to tell.'
And then her mind switched back to earlier events in the day, the sports clothes shop. It suddenly felt like an eternity away -- She realised with a shock that she had modelled for Rob twice today. She needed to challenge Ben on what had happened; she needed to understand him, and he needed to understand that the type of behaviour in the shop was completely unacceptable. But what would she say? That getting her to model for a friend was objectifying? What a hypocrite she would be. She had just modelled for the same friend. Without him. Despite the anger she still felt, she suddenly felt like she had lost the moral high ground in any argument. Besides, poor Ben had spent all afternoon working. She knew work was still impacting him; something was on his mind. He wasn't relaxed, wasn't in holiday mode yet. He needed her support right now, not her anger. They would talk about the sports shop sometime, she decided, but not tonight.
In the other seat, Rob glanced over at her profile against the window, her straight back, her crossed legs, her proud, closed face, and smiled to himself in the grey afternoon light.
*****
After leaving Ana and Rob, Ben had jumped on a tram back to Rob's flat. The tram rattled through the streets. Ben sat with his forehead nearly against the window, watching the city streak by the glass, rehearsing.
'I thought you'd want a second opinion. I didn't think. You looked incredible, I got carried away.'
It was thin. It was the kind of thing that might work on Ana if he delivered it with enough remorse, but Ana was no fool. She would want to know why he had pulled the curtain wide. Why he had made her drop her hands. Why he had made her turn.
He pressed his thumb hard against the bridge of his nose and saw her face again, that terrible crumpling, the disbelief in it. She had looked at him as if she had never seen him before.
And beneath the guilt, treacherous and warm, was the other feeling. The slow, sinking, honeyed pull he had felt in his stomach when the curtain went back and Rob's eyes slid down her body.
When Ben got back to the flat, he dropped his jacket over a kitchen chair and went through to Rob's bedroom, his mind already preparing the process and tasks required to restore the drive. He typed the password from the message Rob had sent, opened the remote desktop, and went to work.
For forty minutes it was simple, soothing drudgery. Logs scrolled and services restarted. He found the failing process, killed it, and watched the error counts bleed down.
When he finally sat back and stretched, he felt the silence of the flat embrace him. His eyes drifted over the PC screen. He had minimised the work VPN window, and the screen showed Rob's desktop. The usual folders labelled WORK, PERSONAL, MUSIC and PHOTOS. Then he noticed it: another folder labelled ELISKA.
He stared at it.
He had met Eliska perhaps eight or nine times, at dinner parties and birthday drinks. She was younger than Ana, but she carried herself with a poise that reminded him of his wife. She was beautiful in a way that was similar to Ana too. The same long dark hair, but different: shorter, curvier, her breasts larger and more prominent, her body softer, less athletic. He had stolen more hungry glances at the deep line of her cleavage across candlelit tables than he would ever admit.
'Don't.'
His hand moved the mouse, and he double-clicked.
The photos loaded in a grid. Eliska on a sofa, in a thin white vest with no bra under it, with her bare feet tucked under her, laughing at the camera. Eliska in a clingy dress at what looked like a rooftop bar, the neckline dipping, her breasts pressed high and round. Eliska stepping out of a shower in a towel, caught mid-turn, one shoulder bare and her hair dripping. Nothing explicit. Intimate, though. The kind of pictures a woman allows only a lover to take. Ben clicked slowly through them. His eyes lingered on the swell of her cleavage, the long curve of her neck. The heat gathered low in his belly, and his cock began to thicken against his jeans.
He shifted in the chair and swallowed.
'This is Rob's ex. This is fucking creepy. Close it.'
He didn't close it. Instead his eyes caught a subfolder at the bottom of the window, untitled except for a single character: a dot. His cursor hovered, then clicked.
The first image filled the screen and drove the breath out of him.
Eliska, on Rob's bed, naked, her long dark hair fanned across a rumpled pillow. Her head lolled sideways and her eyes were half-lidded. Her mouth hung slack. Her legs were splayed wide and her pussy was exposed to the lens, pink and glistening.
Ben's heart slammed against his ribs.
He clicked to the next one. Eliska bent over the arm of a sofa, her ass lifted and spread by two hands that gripped her cheeks and pulled them wide, her pink pussy wet and glistening, her face turned sideways against the cushion, cheek squashed, eyes closed, mouth slightly open. A line of drool darkened the fabric beneath her lips.
In the next picture, she lay flat on a bed with her legs hauled apart, her big tits splayed and heavy, her head lolling over the edge of the mattress, a cock resting across her slack lips. In another, she was on her back with her knees pinned to her chest, her pussy stretched around a thick cock, her expression vacant and dreamy, as if she were watching clouds.
In the last, a close-up of her face, mascara smeared in black tracks down her cheeks, strings of cum across her nose and lips, her eyes rolled halfway up in her head. In the corner of the frame, just on the edge, Rob's unshaven face grinned at the camera, flushed and gloating.
Ben sat frozen, his pulse hammering in his throat.
She would never allow these photos to be taken. Ben knew it with total certainty. Eliska was too proud, too sharp, and too sure of her own worth to lie still and let herself be treated like this. Her expression in every frame was vacant and glassy-eyed.
'He drugged her. He fucking drugged her.' He thought.
And his cock was rock hard, straining painfully against the zip of his jeans.
'This is wrong. This is so wrong.'
His hand was already moving though. He tore open his belt with clumsy fingers and dragged his jeans and boxers down his thighs, and his cock sprang free, flushed and leaking. He wrapped his fist around it and a hoarse breath tore out of him. His eyes devoured the screen: Eliska's slack mouth, her open, defenceless pussy, her useless limbs. He stroked fast, rough, the shame feeding the heat instead of smothering it.
'Look at her. Look at that proud bitch, out cold with a cock down her throat.'
He clicked back to the image of her bent over the arm of a sofa, and the picture shifted in his mind as if a slide had been changed.
Dark hair that fell just past the shoulders. Tanned skin. Long, toned legs folded beneath her. Blue eyes gone cloudy and unfocused, that perfect face slack and wet.
Ana.
His breath hitched. His fist sped up, the wet sound of it obscene in the quiet room. He saw her bent over the same sofa, drugged and pliant, her small firm tits bare and her round ass lifted for Rob, that long athletic body bent and used while her glazed eyes stared at nothing. Ana, who held her chin so high, who spoke of female equality. Ana, empty-headed and drooling and helpless.
"Fuck," he groaned, his hips jerking up off the chair. "Fuck, Ana..."
The orgasm ripped through him. His cock pulsed in his fist and hot ropes of cum spattered across his stomach and shirt, his thighs shaking, his teeth clenched on a cry. He rode it out in long, shuddering spasms, eyes squeezed shut, her face burned onto the backs of his eyelids.
Then it was over, and the silence of the bedroom pressed in on him.
Cum cooled on his skin. On the monitor, Eliska stared out of the photograph with her ruined, vacant eyes, and the sickness rose in Ben's throat like a tide. He had just come over a woman who had been violated, and he had put his wife's face on her.
'What the fuck is wrong with me?'
He grabbed tissues from the desk and wiped himself with shaking hands, then closed the subfolder, then the folder. He tugged his clothes straight and sat for a minute with his palms flat on the desk, breathing. The guilt sat in him like a cold weight.
Then he dragged the work VPN window back onto the screen and began to type.
The front door clicked open an hour later. Ben had washed his face twice and changed his shirt. He came down the stairs with his heart knocking, braced for ice, for the interrogation he had rehearsed on the tram.
Ana stood in the hallway, shaking raindrops from her hair. Rob hung behind her, shrugging off his jacket, his round face flushed and pleased.
She looked up as Ben reached the bottom step. For a moment he saw nothing in her eyes at all. Then she crossed the hallway in three smooth strides, rose onto her toes, and kissed him quickly on the lips. Her fingers found his and squeezed them.
"Did you fix it?" she asked, her voice even and calm.
"Yes," he said. "All sorted."
Surprise loosened something in his chest. She wasn't angry. Whatever had gone on between her and Rob while he was away, whatever Rob had said or done to smooth things over, the storm had passed. Behind her, Rob caught his eye and gave him a slow, easy smile.
Ben squeezed his wife's hand back.
*****
Three tall glasses sat lined up on the counter in Rob's kitchen, each with a paper umbrella and a wedge of pineapple on the rim. Rob leaned against the counter, arms crossed over his stomach, watching Ana laugh at something Ben had said in the living room.
He had spent the whole afternoon replaying her face in that changing-room doorway, the tight little smile she'd worn while turning slowly in the dress he'd picked, pulling the hem down over her thighs as if he hadn't already catalogued every inch of her legs.
She had done it. She said no with her eyes and yes with her body. She had stood there and let him look, because he was Ben's friend and saying no would have made it awkward. That was the crack. Ana had proven she could be talked into things if the social pressure was right.
But he'd seen the stiffness in her shoulders afterward, the way she'd gone quiet on the walk back, the careful distance she'd kept from him since they had got back to the flat. That wouldn't do. Not for what he had planned. He needed her comfortable again, warm, disarmed. And he knew exactly how to do it.
"Right," Rob announced, clapping his hands together as he dropped into the armchair opposite the sofa. "I've heard the stories, guys, but I want the real thing. Photos of the honeymoon. All of them."
Ana's face transformed. The guardedness melted from her features, and she sat up straighter, already reaching for her phone on the coffee table.
"Really?" Her blue eyes brightened. "I have so many. Ben got bored after the first two hundred, I think."
"I did not," Ben protested, though the corner of his mouth twitched. "I just closed my eyes during the reef section."
"You fell asleep during that section." Ana swatted his knee, but she was grinning. "Rob, honestly, the resort was unbelievable. The overwater villa, the colour of the water. You cannot imagine. I took some photos that look like postcards."
'That was easy.' Rob thought. 'Talk about the wedding and she lights up like a Christmas tree. Predictable.'
While Ana started to connect her phone to the TV, he poured the first two glasses of pina colada and set them aside. Then he took the third and, with his back to the doorway, he retrieved the small paper envelope from the pocket of his hoodie hanging on the chair and tipped its contents into the glass. A stir with the long spoon, a swirl of the slush, and the glass looked exactly like the others.
The powder was fine, white, bitter if you tasted it straight, but it wouldn't survive the sweetness of a piña colada. He'd sourced it months ago, tested the dosage on a girl from his gym with no effect she could name, only that she'd gone home with him that night when she'd spent the earlier part of the evening saying she wasn't that kind of girl. An aphrodisiac, the supplier had called it. Whatever it was, it made the body betray its owner. Blood rushed to skin, nerve endings sharpened, and the body grew warm and insistent regardless of what the mind wanted.
'This is the first stage', he mused. He needed to gauge her tolerance against drugs.
He stuck the umbrella in at an angle, the way a bartender would, and carried the tray out with a grin already fixed to his face.
"Order up," he called. "Tropical night. Honeymoon vibes!"
The take-out came a short while later. Cartons of sweet and sour pork, black bean beef, and egg fried rice cooled on the coffee table while the big television filled with sunlight and turquoise water.
Ana sat curled into the corner of the sofa with her legs tucked beneath her and Ben's arm draped across her shoulders. She took a sip of her pina colada and tasted coconut and pineapple, and underneath the sweetness a faint, almost medicinal bitterness. Rum, she supposed. She took another sip anyway.
On the screen, the first photograph of the slideshow dissolved into the next: Ana in her white sundress on the beach at Koh Samui, barefoot, hair whipping across her face, laughing at Ben behind the camera.
"God, look at that light," she said, tilting her head. "Do you remember, Ben? The bar and the sunset on the third night? The woman at the bar who kept telling us we were the most beautiful couple she had ever seen?"
"She said that to every couple," Ben said, grinning into her hair.
"She said it with more conviction to us."
Rob laughed from the armchair, his glass resting on the swell of his stomach. "I believe it. Go on, Ana, I'm loving these photos." He watched her over the rim of his glass. She was halfway down the drink already, her cheeks pinking, her blue eyes bright and a little unfocused. He settled deeper into the cushions and waited.
Twelve minutes into the glass, Rob began watching properly. He knew the timeline. The gym girl had taken roughly twenty minutes to start shifting in her seat.
At seventeen minutes, Ana moved.
It was small at first. She uncrossed her legs and crossed them the other way, then tugged at the collar of her sweater. A line of perspiration had gathered at her hairline. The photographs rolled on, Ben pointing out the monkey that had stolen their breakfast, and Ana's laughter came a half-second late each time.
'Why is it so warm in here?' She thought.
Heat had begun to pool low in her belly, slow and thick, spreading outward in a lazy tide. She became aware of the seam of her jeans pressing between her thighs, aware of her nipples tightening against the lace of her bra, aware of the weight of Ben's arm across her shoulders as though it had been transformed into something electric. Every place his skin touched hers prickled.
She pressed her thighs together, and the pressure sent a pulse of pleasure through her so sharp she almost gasped.
'Stop it. What is wrong with you? Rob is right there.'
She sat very straight, smoothed her sweater, and took a long swallow of cold slush to chase the heat from her face. It did not help. She tucked her hair behind one ear, playing with it absent-mindedly.
Across the room, Rob dropped his gaze to his phone to hide his smile. He had seen the flush climb her throat. He had seen her breath catch, and the little swallow she took to cover it. She was so composed, even now, fighting it like a woman fighting a fever with etiquette.
He gave it a few more minutes, noticing Ana subtly repositioning herself several times to cool the heat in her body. "Another round?" he said, rising and collecting glasses. "Ben, you in? Ana?"
"Please," Ben said.
"I think," Ana began, and her voice came out thicker than she wanted. She cleared her throat. "I think I should call it a night. I'm exhausted. It has been a long day."
"Already?" Rob said, with a pout so gentle it sounded like concern. "The photos aren't even done."
"We have all week for the photographs." She gave him a polite smile, but one that left no doubt the conversation was finished. She stood, and for a moment her knees weren't quite hers. She steadied herself on the arm of the sofa. "Thank you for dinner, Rob. And the cocktails. They were delicious."
"Anytime."
"I'll show Rob the surfer pictures," Ben said, squeezing her hand. "Then I'll be right up."
Ana bent to him. Her mouth brushed the shell of his ear, and Rob, standing by the kitchen door with the empty glasses, saw her lips move. Whatever she said was too quiet to catch. Ben's eyebrows lifted, and a slow, startled grin spread across his face. Ana straightened without looking back, and her hips swayed a fraction too much as she climbed the stairs, one hand gripping the banister as if the staircase were a ship.
Rob listened to her footsteps recede, then the soft click of the guest room door.
He turned to the kitchen with the empty glasses and a thick, warm certainty in his gut. The journey had begun.
Ben wasn't sure how he made it through the next set of photos, giving Rob a commentary that was just detailed enough to not appear rude. Meanwhile, he drained the second cocktail faster than he meant to. All the while his mind was upstairs, replaying the words Ana had breathed into his ear.
"Don't be long. I'm going to be naked. I want you."
The heat in her voice had struck him low in the stomach. "Right," he said at last, setting his glass down. "I'm done in. Thanks for tonight, mate."
"Course. Sleep well." Rob raised his glass.
Ben took the stairs two at a time, then forced himself to slow on the landing.
He had been surprised when Ana and Rob had returned to the flat, that Ana's mood toward him had softened. He had expected to immediately be taken up to their bedroom for an argument in hushed tones, for a demand for an explanation of his behaviour earlier. Instead Ana had met him with a warm kiss and had spent the evening close by his side, seemingly savouring the reassurance of touching him. And now this, urgently saying that she wanted him, the last thing he would have expected following the fury in her eyes earlier in the day.
The guest room door was ajar. Inside, a single lamp burned low on the nightstand, throwing amber across the bed. Ana lay on her side facing the wall with the duvet pulled to her shoulder, the line of her body a long soft curve beneath the covers, her dark hair spilled across the pillow.
She was still. Her breathing sounded slow.
Asleep. Disappointment dropped through him like a coin down a well. Of course. She said she was exhausted. I'm an idiot for taking so long.
He undressed quietly, folded his shirt over the chair, and slid in behind her so that he was spooning her, careful not to jostle the mattress. His hopes raised as he saw that Ana was naked as promised. Maybe the night wasn't a total lost cause as he had feared. Ben rubbed his hands gently together to warm them; he had learnt long ago that nothing destroyed a sex drive like the touch of a cold pair of hands.
Hands now warmed, Ben laid a hand on Ana's curvy wide bottom and started to move it between her legs. He found her slit and slowly started playing around it, before gently probing inside her with a single finger. She was soaked. Little did he know that this was due to the powerful aphrodisiac she had ingested. So wet that his fingers glided in without any resistance at all, and a soft, broken sound escaped her throat.
Ana shifted back in the bed towards Ben so her body was pressed firmly against him, and she slowly started grinding her bottom against Ben's cock. This was a long-ago determined non-verbal signal of showing she was in the mood for sex.
His body pressed up against her from behind, his cock, already hard and aching, nudged against the cleft of her ass. Ben reached round and cupped one of her breasts. Ana responded with another moan and grind against his body. Her breasts, particularly her nipples, were very sensitive, and playing with them usually meant only one outcome.
"Fuck me!" she moaned, turning her head briefly to look him in the eye. She arched her back away from him, bending her body at the waist to give him a better angle into her, and felt the blunt head of his cock slide through her wetness and catch at her entrance. Ana grabbed one of her buttocks, pulling it aside to open herself up for Ben.
He gripped her hips and pushed into Ana. "Ahh, oh!" The cry tore out of her as he filled her. He was hard as iron and she could feel every vein, every ridge. "Yes. Yes, that's it, oh God, mmmph." No foreplay tonight, Ben thought; Ana was already soaking wet and he had hardly touched her. He placed a hand on her hip and started pumping into her; Ana soon matching his pace and his thrusts inside her.
"Harder," Ana gasped.
He quickened, the slap of his hips against her ass beginning to sound through the room.
"Spank me."
Ben faltered. "What?"
"Spank my ass, Ben. Please." She reached back, found his wrist, and dragged his hand to her cheek.
He hesitated, then brought his palm down in a tentative pat.
Smack. It barely stung. A tap, a gentleman's tap, the kind of touch he might have given to a nervous horse.
Ana ground her teeth.
'More.' She thought 'Harder. Do it like you mean it.'
"Again," she hissed.
Smack. A little firmer. Still a caress in disguise.
"Play with my tits. Please. Squeeze them."
He slid one arm around her ribs and cupped her breast again, thumb brushing across the stiff peak of her nipple with a reverence that made her want to scream. Soft, careful circles. A tender squeeze.
'He's being so sweet. He is always so sweet.' A sob of frustration rose in her throat. Her skin was on fire and her husband, her gorgeous, gentle husband, was making love to her like she might break. She wanted to be taken. She wanted to be used, pounded, gripped hard enough to bruise. She wanted something raw and animal that Ben, in all their years together, had never once offered.
'He doesn't know. How could he know?'
She could not bear it another second.
"Stop." She twisted out from under his arm and pulled away, and his cock slid from her with a wet, obscene noise. Ben made a startled sound and reached for her. "No. Lie back."
"Ana, are you okay?"
"Lie back, Ben."
He did, propped on the pillows, bewildered and flushed, his cock standing thick and wet against his stomach. Ana flung the duvet to the floor and swung a leg across his hips, kneeling over him with her long tanned thighs bracketing his waist. Lamplight poured over her small, firm breasts, her tight stomach, the glossy dark thatch between her legs. Her hair fell around her face in wild strands.
Ben stared up at her. He had never seen her look like this. She looked like a goddess.
She wrapped her fingers around his cock and aimed it. For a heartbeat she hung there, the head notched against her wet lips, her blue eyes locked with his, hunger and something close to desperation warring across her face.
Then she sank down.
"Ohhh fuck," she moaned, long and low, head tipping back as she took him to the root. Her pussy stretched wide around him, and the fullness was exquisite, a bright, perfect fullness. She sat there trembling, impaled to the hilt, and let the sensation roll through her.
Then she reached behind herself with both hands, gripped her own ass cheeks, and spread them wide. The stretch pulled her open around his cock, tighter, hotter, every nerve ending lit. She felt the cool air on the exposed crease of her ass. She felt how obscene she must look. And she relished it, pride be damned, rolling her hips forward in a slow, grinding rock.
"Ahh. Mmm. Ahh."
Ben's hands went to her thighs, then her waist, as if he couldn't decide where to put them. His wife was riding him. She was taking exactly what she wanted. Not asking. Taking.
The realization hit him like a drug of its own.
"God, you're gorgeous," he said, voice cracked and hoarse. "You're so fucking beautiful."
"Shut up and let me use you," Ana panted, and the rudeness of it made his cock jump inside her.
She rolled her hips in tight, hungry circles, then lifted and dropped in a rhythm that made the bed creak. The slick, wet sound of their bodies filled the room. Her breasts bounced with each downstroke. A sheen of sweat gleamed along her collarbone, and her long legs flexed and tightened against his hips as she rode him.
But it was not enough.
The heat inside her had no ceiling. Every thrust, every grind, left her teetering at the edge without letting her fall. Her thighs shook. Her jaw clenched. She released one ass cheek, licked two fingers, and without a flicker of embarrassment reached down between her legs.
The first brush of her own touch against her clit made her whole body jerk.
She pressed harder, two fingers working in tight, desperate circles over the swollen bud while her hips never stopped their roll. Her eyes screwed shut. Her brow furrowed. The tendons in her neck stood taut as she chased something just out of reach, grinding down onto Ben's cock and her own fingers simultaneously, using both, her whole body a coiled spring wound tighter and tighter.
Almost. Almost. Almost.
Ben lay beneath her, transfixed, hardly daring to breathe. Sweat ran down between her small breasts, catching the lamplight in a thin golden line. Her face, that beautiful, composed face, was twisted now into something raw and unguarded. Lips parted. Nostrils flared. The muscles in her jaw working.
He savoured the intimacy of seeing Ana surrender to her passions and witnessing her perform acts upon herself that she would normally do in private. He loved the trust that it displayed, that she could make herself so vulnerable, displaying her most intimate passions. It made his cock throb inside her even harder.
"Ana," he whispered. "Ana, look at me."
Her eyes opened halfway, glazed and unfocused. Then her orgasm hit.
"Ahhh, ahhh, ohhh God..."
It started deep in her core and radiated outward like a shockwave. Her inner walls clamped down on Ben's cock in violent, rhythmic spasms, gripping him so tight he groaned aloud. Her thighs shook. Her fingers froze on her clit, pressed hard, and her whole body went rigid, back arching, chest thrust forward, a long low keening cry tearing from her throat that seemed to go on forever.
"Oooohhhhh! Mmmm! Ahh!"
She collapsed forward onto her hands, hair curtaining her face, breath coming in ragged heaves. Her pussy kept pulsing around him in slow diminishing waves.
Ben lay still, desperate not to come, his balls drawn up tight and aching.
Ana's breathing slowed.
She did not lift herself off him. She did not roll away and press her face into the pillow the way she usually did, shy and sated and ready to sleep. Instead she stayed exactly where she was, his cock still buried deep inside her, and began to rock her hips again. Slowly. Deliberately.
Ben made a strangled sound. "Ana, I thought you'd..."
"Sshh." She lifted her head. Her hair fell back from her face, damp at the temples, her blue eyes luminous in the half-light. "Are you okay?" she panted. "To keep going? I think... I think I can come again."
She rolled her hips once, a slow full-circle grind that made them both gasp.
Ben laughed, breathless and disbelieving. "Ana. I'm more than okay."
"Good."
She started to move again.
The fire in her belly had barely dimmed. It should have been quenched. She had come, hard, harder than she could remember, but instead the orgasm had been like a match thrown on gasoline, and Ana knew with absolute certainty that she needed more.
'Once more. Just once more and then I will be myself again.' She thought.
She established a rhythm: rising up until only the thick head of Ben's cock remained inside her, then sinking back down with a groan. She gradually increased the pace. The wet sounds of their fucking filled the room again, louder now, more urgent. Her breasts bounced. Her breath came in short sharp gasps.
"Nnnh, ahh, Ben..."
"I know," he panted, hands gripping her waist. "I know, I'm here."
"Faster."
He thrust up to meet her, and the impact drew a sharp cry from them both.
She was getting close again; she could feel it building, the tension winding tight in her belly, but something was missing, some extra fraction of stretch or depth or angle that she couldn't quite find.
An idea seized her.
She rose up higher on her knees, reached behind herself with both hands, and instead of grabbing her ass this time she caught hold of her own ankles.
The position forced her legs wide apart, stretching her thighs until the tendons stood out like cables, spreading her completely open above him. Her weight drove down onto his cock with her chest thrust forward, spine arched, every part of her displayed and vulnerable and obscenely exposed.
"Fuck! Ana!"
The new angle drove him deeper than before. The head of his cock pressed against somewhere new inside, and the stretch was so intense her eyes watered.
"Oh. oh. oh my God. Yes!"
She was impaled. Completely. She couldn't move much in this position, could only rock slightly, grinding herself against him, but the fullness was overwhelming. Every nerve ending in her pussy was pressed tight against the rigid heat of him.
Ben's hands came up and cupped her breasts.
He squeezed, harder this time, less gentle, more instinct than technique, and rolled her stiff nipples between his fingers.
"AHH!"
That was it. That was the missing piece.
Ana's second orgasm crashed through her like a wave breaking. Her whole body shook. Her fingers dug into her own ankles. A cry tore from her throat, loud, uncontrolled, and her pussy clamped down on Ben's cock with such force that he couldn't have held back if he'd wanted to.
"Ana! Fuck! I'm going to..."
"Yes. Yes. Come. Come in me!"
The sight of his wife, his beautiful, proud, brilliant wife, stretched wide open above him with her legs gripping her own ankles, her small breasts squeezed in his hands, her face contorted in raw pleasure, her pussy milking his cock in spasm after desperate spasm; it was too much. Ben's hips bucked up off the mattress and he came with a hoarse shout, pulsing deep inside her, his cock jerking and throbbing as he emptied himself into Ana's trembling body.
They stayed locked together, frozen, trembling, as the last waves rolled through them both. Ana's arms finally gave out and she collapsed forward onto his chest, her legs sliding down to bracket his hips, his softening cock still inside her. Their hearts hammered against each other.
Ben held her.
His arms wrapped around her back, his palms flat against her shoulder blades, and he stared at the ceiling over her damp hair. His mind was reeling.
'What was that?' He thought, stunned.
His wife, his gentle, private, composed wife, had just fucked him with an abandon he had rarely witnessed in their relationship. A small warm feeling spread through his chest. Whatever had come over her, the holiday photos, the cocktails, being away from home, he was grateful for it. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
"That was incredible," he murmured.
Ana didn't answer.
She lay pressed against his chest, her cheek rising and falling with his breath, and waited for the heat to fade.
It didn't.
It was dimmer now, but it was still there, pulsing gently between her thighs, keeping her aware of every point of contact between her body and Ben's. She should have been exhausted. She should have been satisfied.
'What is happening to me?'
She closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep.
*****
The cum ran slowly down the monitor screen as Rob stared at it, overwhelmed by the show that Ana had just unwittingly put on for him. He had exploded uncontrollably at the sight of Ana on the screen in front of him, her legs parted around her husband, her shoulders back as she grabbed her heels, pushing her bare chest forward and fully exposing herself to his camera.
As soon as Ben had made his brief excuses and rushed to his room, Rob had headed straight to his own room for a live feed of the ensuing show, and he had not been disappointed. He sat back and exhaled.
That was the drug.
He smiled to himself in the dark.
That was the drug, working exactly the way it was supposed to.
He had expected Ana to get wet. He had expected her to maybe initiate something with Ben. But he hadn't expected that! The volume, the desperation, the raw animal quality of her voice when she came. Ana, the stylish and sophisticated wife of his best friend, had just been reduced to a screaming, begging mess by a few milligrams of powder in a piña colada.
He tipped his head back against the cushion and closed his eyes. Low tolerance. High sensitivity. Beautiful.
Never had his desire to take Ana been so strong. For the second time in two days, his plans had gone out the window. He could not wait any longer after that show. He had to have Ana tomorrow, regardless of what she or Ben had to say about it.
