"Uh, what was that?"
Kate asked, handing the phone back after Isabelle had slipped her shirt back on.
"Matt's punishment."
Isabelle looked down at the couch.
"We've been doing denial play and I .... well you came home and I... slipped."
"Slipped?" Kate paused for a moment, then the meaning hit her and her blue eyes widened.
"Oh. Slipped."
Isabelle's dark eyes were locked onto the cushions of their couch as she toyed with a bit of lint.
"I'm not sure where to start."
Kate put a hand on her friend's forearm and the tension there nearly had her snatch her hand back in shock.
"Uh, it's ok, I think I have the basics. You have a kinky relationship with Matt and that's why you just licked our floor."
Isabelle bucked a little and her head came up, the shame and worry melting into anger, her dark eyes seeming to ignite.
"Hey." She protested.
Kate held her hands up in mock surrender.
"I'm sorry. That came out judgier than I meant it to!" She backpedalled.
"I just... why? You're one of the strongest people I know. And you just let some guy and his abs do this to you?"
The anger in Isabelle's gaze softened as she listened.
"God, I hate the mass media sometimes."
She sighed. Then she looked her roommate straight in the eyes.
"Yes. I'm strong. I'm a leader in my field, as poorly paid as that is. I'm young, pretty and the world is my oyster, right?"
Kate couldn't stop a little chuckle from escaping.
"Well, when you put it like that... I mean, yes but..."
"Arrogant right?" Isabelle cut in.
After Kate nodded, she continued.
"And that's my point. I'm all those things AND I'm a submissive. I can be both. I can be in charge when I need to and surrender when I need to. Both sides of me make up a whole person, Katie. I'm not one or the other."
"So, but... what about my tone earlier?" Katie challenged.
"I mean, I don't think I'm particularly dominant and I wasn't..."
Isabelle chuckled.
"When someone else has balanced the rock on the cliff, I don't think you get to take credit for knocking it off. I was primed and you hit a nerve... A good one."
Kate nodded slowly.
"I think I see. Kinda."
Isabelle put her hand out and took Kate's hand.
"It's important to me that nothing changes between us. I've been really worried that this would be something that damages our friendship."
Kate smiled and gripped Isabelle's hand.
"I can't promise that we won't change, nothing stays the same forever, and I did just learn a lot of new information about you. But I can promise that I won't end our friendship over things that are none of my business!"
Isabelle let out a relieved bark of laughter and tension seemed to dissolve from her shoulders.
"Oh good. That's a load off my mind."
"I was wondering though..." Kate said and she paused, biting her lip.
"How did you start all ... this?"
Isabelle grinned, a little self-consciously.
"Well, that is a story."
12 Months Earlier
"God dammit!"
Isabelle cursed as the bus pulled away from the curb. She cursed the three inch heels she was wearing because her asshole of a boss liked them.
She cursed her oversized chest the bounced painfully if she ran.
She cursed the fact her research grant didn't pay her enough to afford a cab.
She was so busy cursing that she didn't realise there was a person in front of her till she was bouncing off a blue clad chest.
"Oh, for... I'm sorry."
She said automatically, before she realised that, in trying not to fall over, her hand had grabbed onto a chunk of denim. A very firm piece of denim. Contoured....
Her eyes flashed up to the smiling face of the man who's ass she was squeezing.
"Oh my god!"
She yelped, jerking her hand away and staggering on her ridiculous heels.
The man's hand flashed out and clamped onto her upper arm. There was nothing salacious about it, if anything it hurt slightly.
His gaze was equal parts concerned and amused, no hint of a leer. And yet, deep in her loins, she could feel a clenching, that firm grip arousing some part of her she hadn't acknowledged for far too long. Not since her undergrad days, in fact.
"Isabelle?" The man's smooth voice broke her out of her thoughts.
"Yes, that's..." Recognition struck her and she gasped again.
"Matt? Oh my god. It's been years!"
"Yeah. Not since undergrad."
He smiled easily. She liked that, she'd always liked his smile.
He used his grip on her arm to urge her over to the bench in the bus shelter and she went willingly.
Her heart was beating fast, memories of the things they'd done tumbling through her head.
"I always regretted we lost touch." She said, sighing a little as her weight finally came off those stupid shoes.
"So did I." Matt looked away, a little shamefaced.
The conversation was stilted for a little bit, but by the time the bus arrived, they were chatting away like they used to.
They got on the bus, finding two seats empty, and the easy flow of conversation continued.
It wasn't till Isabelle realised that the bus had passed her stop ten minutes that the bubble popped.
But Matt hadn't let her get off the bus without getting her number and a promise to catch up for dinner.
Fast forward two days later, and she was standing outside a restaurant, wearing a blue dress that emphasized her heavy bust and a different pair of those stupid heels.
"Aren't you a vision." Matt said smoothly as he walked up to her.
He didn't bother with the usual hesitation, sliding an arm around her waist and gently pulling her close.
"Oh, well, you aren't so bad yourself." Her slap to his chest turned into something of a stroke
as she felt the hard planes of his chest.
"Well thank you." His blue eyes twinkled. "Shall we?"
Matt couldn't remember when he'd last had such a good time. Isabelle was witty, pleasant, engaged and her bust jiggled delightfully each time she laughed.
Which was often.
"So." He said, as they finished their main course. "Shall we address the elephant in the room?"
The happy light faded from her eyes as she nodded.
"I suppose we should."
Her dark eyes seemed to bore into him and he could feel his shoulders hunching slightly.
"I.." He began the same moment she said
"We..."
They both stopped and then laughed, a little awkwardly.
"You speak." Isabelle said and her voice had a slight edge to it.
Matt started slightly. He hadn't seen this side of her before.
"My grandfather passed." He said, softly, blue eyes on the butter dish.
"I know. I should have called. I should let you know."
"Why didn't you?" Isabelle demanded, a little of the old hurt bubbling up.
"You flirted with me for weeks. I... the things I did."
Matt's cheeks flushed as her voice dropped.
"I wore a thong bathing suit to the beach for you. I masturbated in a movie theatre. I drank... you know."
She broke off, blushing.
"I know." His hand reached out, covering hers.
"I... got scared. My grandfather, he always encouraged me to... embrace life. After he died, I... I questioned everything. I deferred my degree. I went overseas, I just... I didn't know who I was."
He looked up at her, and his blue eyes were sparkling, with unshed tears this time.
"I know I left you hanging. I know that was weak. I'm sorry. We got deep, and I loved it. I wanted more. I wanted all of it. I just... I fumbled."
Isabelle took a deep breath, and she was about to speak when he cut her off.
"But I can say now, what I should have said then. I'm sorry."
Her lip trembled, and he felt his heart clench.
But he took a breath and squared his shoulders. He could take this.
"It... was very hot." Isabelle said, her voice soft. Gentle.
"I... it was consuming me too. I was scared. It ... it really sucked, the way you ghosted but... I might have done the same thing."
Relief coursed through him, loosening knots he hadn't even known were in his back and shoulders. He straightened up and he could feel his smile coming back.
"It was fun, though, wasn't it?" He still had hold of her hand and she hadn't pulled it away.
"Remember in the library..."
"Yes!" Isabelle cut him off, flushing brightly. "I remember... all of it."
"All of it?" Matt smirked, watching her squirm.
"Even the part..."
"Yes!" She cut him off. "I remember you using my panties as a gag.
I remember they were soaking wet.
I remember worshipping your shoes.
I remember you making me run naked between the stacks.
I can't forget it!"
The barrage of words hit him and rocked him slightly.
Memory crashed back onto him. He'd actually forgotten that she'd worshipped his shoes in the library.
He'd been remembering that in the park. Though now he thought about it.... she'd done both.
"Hot, right?" He smirked and even though she glared at him, it lacked any real heat.
"It was." She admitted, her voice a little wistful.
Then her head came up and those dark eyes speared him. Playfulness and intensity warred in their depths as she met his gaze. Firmly. Her lips curved slightly.
"Think you've still got it?" She challenged.
He felt his own smile take on a vulpine cast.
"Oh, Isabelle. Famous last words."
