A/N: The two MFCs here were originally meant to be part of the Crime and Punishment challenge, but I wasn't really feeling that story. I think they work better in a Halloween-themed story, so I revised this for Halloween instead. It was going to be a contest entry too, but after it kept being rejected for reasons the mods didn't bother telling me directly about, just making this a non-contest/challenge story. This one is another entry in what I hope to be a series of standalone stories with the premise of "what if characters in a horror scenario just walked away". None of these stories are going to have anything to do with previous entries. Hope you enjoy!
The champagne kept flowing, music blaring through the speakers as they continued sailing away on this massive cruise. The rich bastard who'd thrown this Halloween party on his ship was standing on a platform, dancing and getting more drunk as the night went on. Pretty obvious, judging by his askew fox mask and the many women he'd tried to throw himself at by now. Some flirted back, others ran for their lives.
And here she stood in the shadows, smirking at the chaos all around her. She donned a sexy cat costume as she wandered about, her own drink in hand. It was all for show, of course. She couldn't risk getting drunk on the job.
"Kat!" a male voice called and she turned. Jeremy. The idiot with nothing but a white sheet with two holes cut into it so he could see. She smiled and made her way to him.
"Everything all good?" she asked, setting her untouched drink on a nearby table.
"Yep. We're all set. Boat will be here in about an hour, too. Tech guys are already working on that thing."
"Great! I'll see you soon."
As he turned away, he stopped and gave her a sideways glance, his brown eyes narrowing through those slits. "Really, I don't even know why you're here. We could have pulled this off without you."
"But I would have missed all the fun. And the possible chase if they find out what we're up to. Who would want to miss that?"
Jeremy shook his head and left. Kat's smile widened. She had about fifty-seven minutes left to enjoy the rest of the party. She turned in time to see a woman in a cheetah costume, just as sexy as hers, pick up the drink she'd left behind. Quickly, she walked up to her and grabbed the glass.
"Uh uh. That's mine," she purred.
The woman blinked, then burst out laughing.
"Oh! Sorry!" she said. "I'm a little tipsy. This party is way too much fun."
"Sure is," Kat said. "What brings you here?"
"Oh, my friends are friends of the host... whoever he is," the woman laughed.
Kat smiled back. "Rich bitch friends, huh?"
"Yep."
They fell silent as they looked around. Kat's eyes swept the woman, taking in the slender frame. Her breasts were a little flat, but the look suited the costume she wore. She lingered on her full lips. That was always the best part of a woman, along with their eyes. Her eyes were definitely beautiful. Brown and slanted, the black eyeshadow making them stand out. The woman looked back, her own eyes sweeping Kat's body before looking back at her. As they kept staring at each other, the other woman glanced away shyly, a little blush colouring her cheeks. She laughed awkwardly again.
"Wanna dance?" Kat asked, finally throwing that drink away.
The woman froze but Kat laughed.
"Come on, just one dance."
"Um... okay..."
Grinning, Kat took her arm and pulled her to the dance floor. They began dancing, the woman's movements somewhat awkward. But Kat couldn't have that. Gripping the woman's waist, she leaned closer, her hips swaying to the music. The woman grasped her shoulders, gasping in surprise.
"Let loose, girl. You're at a party."
"I've... just never danced like this before," the woman said, laughing nervously and looking away. "Definitely not with another woman..."
"Oh?" Kat said. She leaned in toward her ear, her own ample breasts pressing more against the woman's. "You're telling me you wanted to dance with me but don't really like dancing with other women?"
The woman stilled once again, her grip on Kat's shoulders tightening, but she didn't back away.
"It's okay. Just go with it. Like this," Kat said.
Putting her hands on the woman's waist, she guided her movements around the dance floor. The woman still moved stiffly at first, but then as they kept going, she finally loosened up more.
"There you go," Kat laughed as she twirled her out and back in towards her.
The music finished then and there was a brief pause. They looked at each other, still pressed close and breathing hard. Suddenly, the other woman leaned forward and kissed Kat. Surprised, but not entirely disappointed, Kat kissed back. Her lips were smooth and soft, just as much as the rest of her. Kat's hands slid down the length of the woman's back until she reached her backside. Pressing in more, she squeezed. The woman gasped into her mouth and pulled away sharply.
Woops, Kat thought. Guess I went a bit too far.
"Sorry," the woman said. "I've just never... my family..."
Kat grimaced, realising exactly what was going on. She felt a little sorry for her.
"Well, we're at a party, in a crowd of people who aren't paying any attention. And wearing costumes. No one's gonna notice or care."
The woman looked back longingly. She leaned forward slightly before backing away and shaking her head.
"I have to go," she muttered. "I'm sorry, I don't normally do these kinds of things."
Quickly, she fled, leaving Kat standing there. Well, damn. Kat turned and also began making her way down below, seeing as it was time to meet up with the others. On her way, her phone rang and she looked down. Jeremy.
"Where are you?" his panicked voice said the moment she picked up.
"Near my room. Don't worry, I'm on my way-"
"No, don't come here! We-"
Jeremy's voice suddenly cut out, and Kat jumped at the sound of a high pitched, inhuman screeching in the background. The phone clattered and Jeremy's screaming faded. Then, there was nothing but silence... until a loud crunch had her wrenching her ear away from the phone and glancing down in horror.
What. The fuck. Was that?!
Her mind reeled. Jeremy. Her team. What had happened down there?
Despite Jeremy's warning, she booked it to the security room.
***
The moment she was further below deck, she stopped and stared. The hallway was dark and she turned on her phone flashlight to get a good look at what was happening. But she wished she hadn't.
On the floor, multiple bodies were ripped to shreds and tossed carelessly. Some were her own team, others were security personnel. Blood covered the floors and walls. Even the ceiling, where the lightbulbs had been shattered. Covering her mouth, Kat carefully stepped forward, her heart pounding and hands clammy. What the fuck had happened here?!
Pointing the flashlight everywhere, corners included, Kat slowly walked down the hall and to the security room, covering her nose as she did. The sickening smell was everywhere. Her eyes fell on Tammy. Her body was torn in half, eyes glassy as she stared at nothing.
Bile rose up Kat's throat, and she sunk to her knees.
Fuck, Tammy. What did this to you?
She stared at the woman before turning and looking around more. There had been no sign of Jeremy anywhere. Standing, something caught her eye. The cellular bypass device that they'd used to splice into the main terminal. They'd used it to tunnel past the ship's firewall, spoofing the chief purser's credentials to execute an offshore transfer before all this had happened.
Kat quickly picked it up from the floor and slipped it in between her cleavage, hoping it wouldn't fall out. She looked at the door to the security room, wondering if she should go in and check out-
"Nope. I'm out," she whispered to no one in particular. Then, she turned and practically ran out of there, completely ignoring the door. No way in hell was she going in there after everything. If Jeremy wasn't here, hopefully he'd survived somehow. As she rushed out the door, she smacked right into someone. They both fell to the ground and Kat cried out at the impact.
The next thing she knew, her arm was twisted behind her back and a gun pressed to the back of her head. Whoever it was, they straddled her from behind.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" the female voice demanded.
Kat's breath hitched. "Wait! I just got here and saw all this shit! I don't know what's going on."
"Hmph."
The woman withdrew the gun but then came the clinking of cuffs. Kat struggled but the other woman kept twisting her arm, her knee digging into Kat's neck as she locked her arms behind her back. When she was done, she hauled Kat up with her.
"Move. No funny business," she said and nudged Kat in the back with her gun.
The two of them walked swiftly back towards the lit hallways and Kat's eyes widened when she saw more security there. An older guy looked grimly back.
"Who's this?"
"Someone I found coming out of the security room. She's probably with the other guy," the woman behind her said. She made her way in front, putting her gun away. Kat's eyes widened more. It was Cheetah girl from the party.
"It's a fucking mess in there, Bob," she continued as she wiped her forehead.
"I saw. Whatever did that couldn't be human."
"Then what?!"
"Fuck if I knew."
Kat looked around, her heart racing more. All around her, the few security staff looked pale.
"We should call this in to mainland police and get backup out here," the woman said.
"I don't think they would get here on time if anything else happens, Miyuki. We'll arm ourselves up. First, we gotta see what we're dealing with. Let's get to my office."
They all followed Bob, Miyuki pushing Kat along. As they walked, Kat's mind raced. They'd mentioned a man. Could it be Jeremy? She really hoped it was, and as they kept going, she found herself calming down more. She turned to Miyuki. The woman had lost all her shy, awkward demeanor and had taken on a very authoritative look now. Sexy.
"So, what are you? A cop or something?"
"Sheriff. Keep moving."
Kat smirked. "Yes, ma'am."
Her flirtatious gaze earned her another shove but Kat only grinned as she turned back around.
They all filed into what she assumed to be Bob's office. There, Kat breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of Jeremy, also cuffed as he sat down. His shirt was covered in blood, splashes of it on his pale, drawn face as well.
"Jeremy! Are you okay?!"
His head snapped up at the sound of her voice but as Kat tried to run to him, she was held back by Miyuki.
"He's fine. Just in shock," Miyuki said. She pulled Kat away to another side of the room and made her sit down. She cuffed her arms behind her back to the chair. "And before you ask, yeah, he's admitted to everything he's been doing here and now we know you're with him."
Miyuki left to join Bob as they went through the camera footage on his computer. Kat turned to Jeremy, who looked back at her.
"What happened?" she mouthed to him, but he just shook his head and looked away. He was usually so upbeat but looked like death right now.
"Fuck!" Bob suddenly yelled, slapping his desk. Kat and Jeremy jumped hundreds of feet in the air, along with Miyuki and a few others. Clearly, some were used to Bob's explosive outbursts.
"Did you see that? Here, I'll rewind."
Kat tried peering over Miyuki's shoulder at the screen and managed to catch sight of what Bob had zoomed in on. Her heart raced again.
Some kind of alligator looking thing, standing on its hind legs and mowing down everyone in its path. Completely unfazed by the bullets that bounced off it. Bob rewound the footage a couple more times before they stopped.
Everyone fell into a heavy, shocked silence.
"What... what the fuck to we do against that?!" a skinny guy asked. One of the people that had been there when Kat was escorted up here. "Jesus H Christ, the moron was telling the truth!"
"I fucking told you!" Jeremy hissed. "Why would I make that shit up?!"
No one answered. Miyuki looked deep in thought, though all of them looked disturbed. Kat's mind reeled at what she'd seen. Some creature, completely unaffected by bullets. Never in a million years had she thought this simple heist would take a turn towards this.
She could suddenly feel the hard device she'd hidden in her cleavage, and she looked at Jeremy. Everyone would be distracted dealing with whatever that was now. They should wait until everyone was gone and get the fuck off this boat.
"I wonder if we can trap it," Miyuki said. Everyone looked over at her.
"Trap it with what? Hidden doorways that slam down from the ceiling?" Bob scoffed. He wiped his face.
"Or we could try fire. See if that works on it."
"This ain't a video game, sheriff."
"So, what? We just sit here and wait for it to kill everyone on board?" Miyuki said, turning sharply towards Bob. "We need to do something!"
Bob seemed to find himself, then. He stood and nodded, then addressed the whole room.
"Right. Gather everyone and fill them in. Get their ideas and be quick about it. You two, keep monitoring the cameras and update us about where it could be."
Bob stopped and his eyes narrowed at Kat and Jeremy.
"Keep an eye on them, too."
"Yes, sir!" the ship security said in unison.
They all left, Miyuki glaring at Kat on her way out. Kat just smiled back. The moment the door closed behind them, she turned to Jeremy. He was looking at her again.
"We need to go," she mouthed, gesturing with her head to the door. Jeremy's eyes flickered to the guards, and he shook his head vehemently.
"No!" he mouthed back.
Kat wouldn't have it. She mouthed back, "don't be a pussy-"
"HEY! Stop that this instant!" the fat female security guard said. "Do we have to separate you two?"
"No, ma'am," Kat said and looked away. Jeremy wouldn't go with her, but she would never leave him behind. The two had known each other since they were kids and she would drag him out kicking and screaming if she had to.
His still terrified face looked back at hers. Yep. Definitely had to drag him out. If they stayed on this ship, they were both as good as dead. But first...
"Ma'am, can I please get some water?"
"No," the woman said, glaring back.
"Please, I'm thirsty. My friend, too. We've both been through hell, seeing our friends... the way they..."
Kat's breath hitched. Tears filled her eyes and she swallowed, not entirely pretending. She glanced up in time to see the woman's shoulders fall a little before she sighed.
"Fine," she said curtly and turned away. The other guy was still focused on the cameras.
Kat made her move. Leaping up silently, she dragged the chair with her, catching Jeremy's eyes as she went. He'd frozen, wide-eyed, but he didn't make a peep. Then, she stepped onto the table to get a height advantage. Or rather, she tried to.
This had gone so differently in her mind. She'd imagined herself leaping up, hauling herself silently onto the table and knocking out both of them before they had the chance to do anything.
Instead, as she reached the table, dragging the heavy chair behind her while trying to climb on top, she lost her balance and the chair dragged her back onto the floor with it. Kat groaned as she hit the floor hard.
"What the fuck are you doing?!" the now angry woman said. "Jeez, get up. I'm gonna have to lock you up somewhere else if this keeps happening!"
"Wait!" Kat said in a panic as she was hauled up. "Wait, please! We need to get the fuck out of here. Whatever you all are planning won't work!"
The woman scoffed. "Sit still and shut up."
Slamming her back down at a further corner of the room, she helped Kat drink the water before walking away. Kat glared at her retreating back. The woman gave another cup to Jeremy, who also took a sip. He didn't have the same kind of disadvantage as her, thanks to his arms being cuffed in front. Staring the both of them down for a few more moments, the woman looked back at the screen.
"That was stupid," Jeremy mouthed. Kat grimaced.
A little while later, the radio flared to life and then came the sound of chaos from the other end. Bob's voice came through.
"Everyone, we're evacuating this ship. There's no way we can do anything to whatever this thing is. Sound the alarm now!"
"Fuck's sake!" the woman said. "Come on, Tim. Help me with these two."
The evacuation alarm sounded then. Tim and the woman dragged them up and cuffed their hands behind their backs again, holding them firmly as they pushed them out the door.
"Remember," the woman warned. "No funny-"
"Business. I got it," Kat shot back, earning her another shove. One that, unlike Miyuki, sent her careening forward and losing her balance. Before she could hit the floor, the woman grabbed her and steadied her.
And that's when Jeremy screamed. As did the man behind him.
Kat looked ahead and her heart stopped. The creature stared at them, it's mouth drawing back and sharp teeth dripping with blood. It seemed to be grinning at them. Then, it lunged.
The woman pushed her into the wall and took out her gun, shooting in a panic. The creature of course kept running at full speed and tackled her to the ground. Kat froze as it ripped into her neck, cutting off her screams. Snapping out of it, Kat maneuvered her hands to her front and ran to Jeremy. Tim was still shooting hopelessly at the thing, and she used that opportunity to drag Jeremy up.
"Run!" she yelled. When he didn't move, she slapped him. "Come on, Jeremy!"
He finally snapped out of the comatose state he'd been in and ran with her. Neither looked behind as Tim screamed.
They ran down this hallway and that, up the stairs towards where the evacuation point was supposed to be. At least, Kat had the sense of memorising that while she was here. Luckily, the creature hadn't followed them. Probably had its fill after those two. Hopefully.
Around a corner, she smacked into someone and the both of them fell to the floor. Kat groaned again and looked down at the one she'd fallen on top of.
"We've got to stop meeting like this," she grinned.
"Get off me!" Miyuki sneered and pushed her off. Laughing as she stood, Kat offered a hand, but Miyuki ignored her, getting to her own feet.
"What happened?"
"Your people got eaten," Jeremy said sombrely.
A look of horror crossed Miyuki's face before she pulled herself together.
"Come on. We're getting off this ship," she said. "You two of course, are still under arrest."
"Oh, come on!"
Miyuki drew her gun, expression still hard. "Move. Now."
Sighing, Kat turned and gestured for Jeremy to follow. They made their way to the evacuation point, soon joined by a blood soaked Bob and others. Now that she really looked at Miyuki, the woman had some blood on her, too.
Slowly but surely, they evacuated. Keeping everyone as calm as possible. Their captors hung at the back of the crowd, keeping out of sight as much as they could. The only thing they could do was block the doors so the creature couldn't follow them out. That seemed to be its only weakness. At least, that's what Kat thought until Bob spoke up.
"We've set the gas cannisters off now. The bombs are in place. We're detonating the whole ship and hope it works," he said and looked towards the front, where the main host of all this was being dragged away. "Party boy's not too happy, but we have to do it."
"Wait, why do you have bombs on this ship?!" Kat whispered back.
Bob scoffed. "Let's just say you're not the only criminal around here."
Kat glanced at Miyuki, who looked forward grimly. Interesting.
When they finally got everyone off the ship, they all stared back at it. In the next moment, it blew up, bits and pieces flying everywhere. Kat stared at all the fireworks, shuddering and took hold of Jeremy's hand. They'd escaped with their lives.
It took a long while for them to find another ship that would take them on. By then, the captain along with Bob and the rest had come up with a cover story, saying the ship had been infiltrated, and they'd gotten into a scuffle before the criminals had blown it up. Only a small amount of casualties, some of which were people they hadn't managed to evacuate in time. Party boy remained wisely silent as they all explained.
The partygoers looked hilarious while still donning their Halloween costumes. That was something at least. She turned to Jeremy.
"Do you miss your ghost sheet?"
Jeremy shook his head. "How are you still making jokes about this?"
Kat sighed and leaned against him. "It's just the way I deal with things, Jer."
He said nothing but wrapped a hand around her shoulders as they stared at the locked door of the room they were being held in. They were still under arrest after all that. Kat had thought about threatening to out the crew and Miyuki, but what would be the chances of anyone believing them? She grimaced. Sometime later, Miyuki searched her and found that device where she'd put it. She'd changed out of her costume and looked the part of a sensible sheriff now.
"Kinky," she teased. Miyuki glared back and she laughed. "Come on, you didn't enjoy that one kiss we shared at all?"
"No."
Kat leaned forward. Miyuki didn't move away and she smiled again. Leaning towards her neck, Kat's lips brushed against the soft skin and saw the goosebumps appear.
"Liar," she teased. Miyuki looked at her. Then, she leaned in, pressing her lips against Kat's almost desperately for a moment before pulling away again.
"I shouldn't have done that."
"But you did," Kat grinned.
Miyuki shook her head. "No... but the things I saw on that ship... I'm just glad to be alive."
"And you're still a fucking prude," Kat said, rolling her eyes.
"What would you know?" Miyuki said sharply and turned back. "You were on that ship trying to pull off a heist. Probably have been a criminal for most of your short life. I have a family, with expectations. I can't live the loose life you have, flinging myself at women just because I feel like it."
"Oh... So, you're from that kind of family. The kind who expect you to be a closet case, married to a man and pop out a bunch of kids. Nice life."
Miyuki glared. "I can't just think of myself. They gave their time raising me with good values, unlike you. From what your friend told me, seems like you were just going to run away without trying to save anyone because you're a selfish bitch."
Kat froze as something in her stung.
"And what would you know about my life? My whole life has been nothing but survival. This heist had been about to be a big one before it all got screwed up. I'd been imagining making a good life for myself, instead of the rotten one I'd been stuck with. What would a prude like you know?"
Miyuki said nothing to that, her mouth pursing.
"And some detective you are, protecting a rich party boy who's been doing illegal shit on the side!"
"You don't know anything about that. How much it hurts me to do it. I have no choice."
"And I do?"
The two of them stared each other down, neither wanting to break eye contact. Until Miyuki broke form again. Leaning in, she kissed Kat hard. Kat wanted to back away, but the past few hours finally caught up to her. Her hands still cuffed behind her back, she used her body to push Miyuki backwards until she was pressed against the wall. Pinning her there, Kat's lips trailed from her mouth to her neck. Miyuki moaned. Then, she broke away.
"We should stop," Miyuki said, but her arms wrapped around Kat's shoulders instead.
"Yeah, right."
Taking her earlobe between her teeth, Kat nibbled away as she ground her hips against Miyuki's.
"Stop," Miyuki breathed. Her fingers tangled in Kat's hair, urging her to keep going.
Kat came up to brush her lips against hers.
"Say it like you mean it," she teased.
"Fuck you," Miyuki moaned. Then, she pulled Kat in for another kiss, her lips parting wide enough so Kat could slip her tongue in. In the next moment, Miyuki pulled her face away.
"Don't want any more, princess? You can uncuff me and I'll give you the best orgasm of your life," Kat breathed, kissing her neck once more.
Miyuki's fingers tightened on her shoulders and she glared back.
"Get off me."
Kat grinned and obliged. Straightening her clothes, Miyuki glared again before leaving. Kat smirked at the door. Guess this was something of a victory.
***
The locked door finally opened and Miyuki stepped inside, two guards flanking her. Jeremy was with them.
"Alright. Time to go."
Sighing again, Kat and Jeremy were both made to follow. Outside, they unceremoniously boarded a black ship heading back to shore, along with Miyuki. To jail so they could await their trial. Great. Just great.
***
Beneath the surface of the water, the creature watched the black ship parting. Then, it turned to the white ship where it could see party boy still staring angrily into the distance. The creature grinned, then swam at breakneck speeds towards the reason it had attacked in the first place. It had gotten sidetracked before, but this time there would be no more distractions.
